- A growing trend within the literature on value creation is the introduction of private-collective knowledge communities, which create opportunities for organizations to leverage knowledge. In these communities, participants privately invest in a project’s success by freely revealing and contributing their personal resources such as expertise and time to a public good. Firms then use these public goods as the basis for their own product offering. In this paper, we focus on describing the nature of the relationships that exist within private-collective knowledge communities and subsequently develop a framework for how researchers and practitioners can understand the organization-user dynamics found within these communities. As such, our research questions are as follows: What factors impact the organization-user dynamics in private-collective knowledge communities and how do these factors affect the nature of the relationships within these communities? We conclude with initial results supporting our model and discuss future steps, limitations, and contributions.

- The strategy by which a platform owner manages the future trajectory of its platform involves many unknowns. In particular, the ambition to simultaneously control the platform and distribute design capability to users is challenging. While there is an emerging literature on strategy in platform ecosystems, little empirical evidence exists about the series of strategic actions that platform owners conduct to create value in an ecosystem context. Drawing on a strategy-as-process perspective, this paper augments existing platform perspectives by seeking to understand the micro-strategizing of a platform owner. To this end, we report a multiple case study of Apple’s use of application programming interfaces for generating value from the iPhone platform. Our comparative analysis identifies and explores five different micro-strategies that can be enacted proactively or reactively: counteracting, monetizing, resourcing, securing, and sustaining. The paper concludes with a number of theoretical and practical implications of these micro-strategies and their interaction.

- Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have originally been developed for large enterprises (LEs). However, market saturation, integration of supply chains and technology improvements have led to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have started adopting ERP systems. Though there is a focus shift from LEs to SMEs in the ERP market, most academic literature on ERP systems is based on findings from LEs. In addition, while the ERP system adoption life cycle consists of three stages: procurement, implementation and post-implementation, academic discourse has mostly focused on implementation or post-implementation phases, indicating a knowledge gap on ERP system procurement stage, especially regarding procurement of ERP system in SMEs. In this study it is investigated how ERP system procurement is carried out in SMEs. Based on academic literature a theoretical framework on ERP system procurement in SMEs was built, which then was used as a foundation for the empirical investigation. Based on empirical findings we have identified two contrasting ways for how SMEs carry out ERP system procurement. The main contribution is the identification and the explanation of how SMEs specificities affect an ERP system procurement process in SMEs. One implication from this contribution is that it shows that SMEs are a too broad class of organization to do research on.

Taking industry seriously in ICT research : The case of building and construction industry

- Industry has received little attention in Information systems research as a factor explaining information and communication technology (ICT) related activities in organizations. By drawing on a case study in the building and construction industry in Sweden, the aim of this paper is to contribute to an enhanced knowledge of how industry specific features shape the adoption and use of ICT. It is concluded that the adoption and deployment of ICT is shaped by the interplay among three main dimensions of the industry. These dimensions are the market and production environment (shaped by specific interaction patterns among its features), the socio-cognitive environment, and institutional actors. The outcomes of this interplay will “fit” material features of ICT, implying certain ICT applications are preferred in a specific industry. However, the interaction patterns among which features to be included in the framework will vary among industries. The suggested framework can be used as a point of departure when ICTrelated activities in an industry are analysed.

- The Delphi method is recommended for exploratory research in emerging research areas. Despite earlier suggestions for using the Delphi method for theory creation, few analytical tools are provided for this purpose. However, Grounded Theory is especially devoted to creating theories from qualitative data. This paper describes an enhanced Delphi method which integrates data analysis techniques from Grounded Theory. The resulting Grounded Delphi Method (GDM) improves Delphi studies by bringing in a data collection technique that focuses explicitly on the identification of the reasons and consequences for issues, ranked by experts. Moreover, the techniques of open and axial coding support the discovery of theoretical concepts from the initial Delphi issues. In turn, the ranking process of the Delphi method provides a rigorous means for selecting core categories for theory development, which decreases researcher interference on this issue.

The Practices of Unpaid Third-Party Developers : Implications for API Design

- To draw on the innovation capabilities of third-party developers many organizations are currently deploying open application programming interfaces (API’s). While third-party services may offer commercial opportunities for independent software firms, a large portion of existing third-party software are undertaken without any financial compensation. Although unpaid developers offers a potential source for innovation of end-user services, the current literature has largely overlooked how these unpaid actors use and appropriate the technology provided by organizations. To this end, this research pays specific attention to the specific practices of unpaid developers. The data used for analysis were collected through a programming contest – a hackathon – where unpaid developers gather to craft end-user services. Through an ethnographic lens we present a number of recurrent activities and patterns of action employed by developers and from this analysis we present implications for API designers seeking to attract unpaid developers.
