  • Improving energy efficiency in optical cloud networks by exploiting anycast routing
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition, ACP 2011. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819489616 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploiting anycast routing significantly reduces optical network and server energy usage. In this work we present a case study showing that intelligently selecting destinations and routes thereto, while switching off unused (network) elements, cuts power consumption by around 20% and saves network resources by 29%.

  • Cutting the electric bill by routing and wavelength assignment with time-zones and time-of-use prices
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition. - : SPIE. - 9780819489616
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider an energy-aware WDM core network, where the electric prices differ according to time intervals of the day, referred to as time-of-use rates. Since a large backbone network may have nodes scattered over several time zones, we exploit the time-of-use rates to lower the electric bill of the network provider. By using an ILP formulation of the bill minimization problem, we investigate the gain of total electric bill over two approaches where capacity and energy are optimized under different network traffic load conditions.

  • Switchable polarization-sensitive surface plasmon resonance of highly stable gold nanorods-liquid crystals composites
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optoelectronic Materials and Devices VI. - Washington, D.C. : SPIE. - 9780819489616
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we demonstrate the bulk self-alignment of gold nanorods (GNRs) dispersed in lyotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with high optical absorption coefficient at the surface plasmon resonant wavelength. The polymer-coated GNRs which show spontaneous long-range orientational ordering along the director of LC host exhibit long-term stability as well as high concentration. External magnetic field and shearing allow for alignment and realignment of the orientation of gold nanorods by changing the director of the liquid crystal matrix. This results in a switchable polarization-sensitive surface plasmon resonance exhibiting stark differences from that of the same nanorods in isotropic fluids. The devise-scale bulk nanoparticle alignment may enable optical metamaterial mass production and control of surface plasmon resonance of nanoparticles.

  • Transmission characteristics of a novel grating assisted microring
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition, ACP 2011. - Washington, D.C. : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780819489616 ; , s. 83080A-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a new type of grating-assisted microring (GAMR) structure with Bragg gratings placed on microring's arms. Two Fabry-Perot resonances interact with microring resonance, resulting in GAMR's unique amplitude and phase spectra. The structure's characteristics are analytically studied using coupled mode theory and numerically verified by 2D-FDTD. With proper cavity lengths, GAMR exhibits an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like spectrum. The ultra-narrow resonance can be used for sensing, modulation, and other applications.

  • Protection cost evaluation of two WDM-based next generation optical access networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition. - Washington, D.C. : Optical Society of America (OSA). - 9780819489616 ; , s. 83100P-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the capital and operational expenditures for two next generation optical access (NGOA) networks based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology in dense urban areas. It is shown that with a proper fiber layout design, minor extra investment for protection of NGOA networks can make a significant saving on failure related operational cost.

  • Phase noise mitigation in coherent transmission system using a pilot carrier
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Asia Communications and Photonics 2011. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819489616
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the phase noise elimination employing an optical pilot carrier in the high speed coherent transmission system considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). The numerical simulations are performed in a 28-Gsymbol/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent system with a polarization multiplexed pilot carrier. The carrier phase estimation is implemented by the one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) filter and the differential phase detection, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the application of the optical pilot carrier is very effective for the intrinsic laser phase noise cancellation, while is less efficient for the EEPN mitigation.
