  • Analyzing Barriers to Digital Transformation in the German Engineering Industry : A Comparison of Digitalized and Non-Digitalized Enterprises
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proeccedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 4849-4858
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The German engineering sector is one of the most prominent industries in Germany in terms of revenues, the number of employees, and reputation for the “Made in Germany” brand. In this industry, digital transformation (DT) has become a significant trend. DT is more than optimizing internal processes by digital means. It entails the offer of digital services and products and the enhancement of customer experience. Complex barriers need to be overcome to drive this transformation forward. Therefore, our study analysis the organizational barriers to DT within the German engineering industry. We follow a quantitative approach to gain insight on organizational barriers by a comparison of digitalized and less digitalized enterprises and their DTs. Our research demonstrates that digitalized enterprises perceive lower degrees of certain barriers in leadership, culture, employees, and skills, which are essential parts in a socio-technical view. However, there are still barriers that digitalized enterprises are struggling with.

  • How startups utilize organizational adaptability in digital innovation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Manoa, Hawaii : University of Hawai'i Press. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 5285-5294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a global digital market, startups must have the capability to handle apprehension of knowledge and utilization of knowledge efficiently to quickly adapt to new realities as these emerge, given their limited resources—this regardless of whether it is customer needs or other events that affect the market. However, we do not know how startups quickly change course and adapt to stay competitive in the market. Therefore, we conducted a qualitative study based on 23 interviews with nine globally active automotive startups to understand startups' fast adaptability and how it impacts their digital innovation capability. The results show that startups with an organizational agility capability efficiently handle the transition between all four stages of innovative thinking. We conclude that dealing simultaneously with a problem from several different perspectives accelerates the apprehension of knowledge through concrete experience and abstract thinking; experimenting with new solutions develops new insights and knowledge.

  • The Role of Digitalization in New Practice Creation : The institutionalization of UX at AutoInc
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Washington, DC : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 6442-6451
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although information systems research has brought the role of new practice creation in innovation processes to the fore, few studies focus on initial activities of digital innovation and how they eventually lead to institutional transformation. Using a framework of institutional enablers of digital innovation, this study analyses the role of new practice creation in digital innovation. The study is based on a 20-yearlong case study in the automotive industry and follows the emergence of User Experience (UX) practices in an automotive manufacturer. We do this study to understand how UX could develop from a marginal position scattered over the organization to the institutional core as the main logic of innovation. The study theorizes the role of organizational forms, digital institutional infrastructures, and digital institutional building blocks in the legitimization of new practices for organizational transformation. © 2022 IEEE Computer Society. • Applying Framing Theory in Digital Transformation Research: Suggestions for Future Research
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133157
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meaning-making processes are essential to guide new action pathways in organizations. How organizations engage in meaning making of digital technologies should therefore be of particular interest in digital transformation (DT) research. This study explores how an existing theory of meaning making in organizations, namely, framing theory, can be applied in DT research. It contributes to the literature by offering a synthesis of framing theory, with an emphasis on framing of digital and information technologies in organizational contexts and proposing research questions inspired by framing theory for future DT research.

  • Barriers to a Well-Functioning Digital Market : Exploring Dark Patterns and How to Overcome Them
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Human-centricity in a Sustainable Digital Economy. - : University of Hawai'i at Manoa. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 4697-4706
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a well-functioning digital economy, consumers should be able to make autonomous and informed choices, and companies compete fairly. One of the barriers preventing such well-functioning is dark patterns—designs that mislead users into making specific purchase-related choices. In this research, through a qualitative inquiry (expert interviews), we classify dark patterns based on the harmful ways such designs affect the digital market. Moreover, we analyze data using the behavior change framework and illustrate ways to prevent dark patterns and grant consumers greater protection and autonomy. Our exploratory results outline potential solutions policymakers might apply to improve digital market well-functioning.

  • Digital servitization : How data-driven services drive transformation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Honolulu : University of Hawaii at Mānoa. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 1258-1267
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The infusion of data-driven services in manufacturing provides new opportunities for long-term competitive advantage; however, it also poses new challenges and entails tradeoffs among strategic options. Digital servitization changes intra-firm processes and customer relationships as well as overall ecosystem dynamics. Drawing on an extensive study of ABB Marine & Ports, a market-leading systems integrator, the concept of digital servitization is examined by analyzing its key characteristics, including opportunities and challenges for manufacturers. The resource integration patterns that connect actors and the dual role of technology in both increasing resource integration complexity and in facilitating the coordination of complexity are discussed. Advancing digital servitization requires fostering service-centricity and executing strategic change initiatives for both the internal organization and the broader ecosystem. Firms must undertake three interlinked changes: (1) digital, (2) organizational, and (3) ecosystem transformations. In addition to contributing to the service literature, these findings provide actionable insights for managers.

  • Experiencing Electric Vehicles : The Car as a Digital Platform
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Washington, DC : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 511-520
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transition towards electric vehicles (EV)s is rapidly increasing, and the automotive industry has been busy exchanging to electric engines. However, electrification of cars is not only about hardware, but it also implies a digitalisation of cars. Charging and maintenance of EVs is enabled through digital platforms. Little is known of how this digitalisation of cars affect people's everyday lives. What happens when the car moves from being simply a machine that provides means for transport, but also becomes a power source and a sensor platform with computing capacity powered with AI driven technologies that is controlled via digital platforms? In this article, we present findings on how people experience and learn to live with EVs in their everyday life. We argue that ethnographic understandings of EVs as evolving digi-physical phenomena provide opportunities to foresight how to implement EVs from a people-centric perspective. © 2022 IEEE Computer Society. • Using Mobile Data for Understanding Population Movement and Disease Transmission during Covid-19 Outbreak in the Nordics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Honolulu, HI : University of Hawai'i Press. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 7151-7160
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the use of mobile data to understand patterns of population movements and disease transmission during the Covid-19 outbreak. It also focuses on understanding the implications of using this data for individual privacy. Using a mixed-methods approach, we present 10 rich qualitative interviews and 412 surevey responses from participants across the Nordics. Our novel results show that the use of mobile data can be characterized by two main categories: validation data and complementary data. We also identify five implications for practice: sharing resources and expertise between health agencies and telecom companies; extended collaboration with multiple network operators;cross-disciplinary collaboration among multiple parties; developing data and privacy guidelines; and developing novel methods and tools to address the trade-off between maintaining individual privacy and obtaining detailed information from mobile data. These implications may inform immediate and future actions to prepare for, mitigate, and control the spread of infectious diseases using mobile data. They also show privacy-driven limitations of mobile data in terms of data accuracy, richness, and scope.

  • The Political Turn of Twitch – Understanding Live Chat as an Emergent Political Space
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - Hawaii, United States : Proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 1530-1605 .- 2572-6862. - 9780998133157
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research and media have all emphasized the importance of digital platforms such as Twitter and Facebook in contemporary political activism. Yet, little is known of the politicization of other digital platforms, such as Reddit, Twitch, and Discord, and how such politicization is manifested. By politicization, we refer to the emergence of political messages in a “decidedly a-political” space. In this paper, we explore a case of politicization on Twitch, a live streaming platform associated with the gaming community. We focus on the live chat, a central feature of Twitch. Our analysis illustrates rapidly emergent actor roles and their respective use of different features in posting (and objecting to) political messaging. We develop a model that illustrates the dynamic between actors and conclude with implications for research and practice.

  • The Intersection Between Information Systems and Workplace Learning : A Systematic Review and Research Agenda
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Washington, DC : IEEE Communications Society. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 5396-5405
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information Systems (IS) research has extensively studied change in relation to digitalization. However, less attention has been paid to both individual and organizational change from a learning perspective. There is a need for a deeper understanding of how changes are fostered and how and why learning in the circumstances of digital practices occurs. This interdisciplinary systematic review shows how workplace learning has been addressed within IS, bringing together workplace learning theories and the field of IS. The results show that research on the role of knowledge in IS tends to rely on established and conventional theories without explicitly articulating the learning aspects. We call for more IS research that explicitly addresses digital change as learning. This paper provides a research agenda via three research directions for IS researchers interested in work and learning, aiming for a theoretical discussion to advance our field. © 2022 IEEE Computer Society. • Online communities as a source of innovation : A netnographic study on Crusader Kings 3
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 3141-3150
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Video Game development is driven more and more by the input from player communities – both prior to release and post-release. This study focuses on a particular game community using a netnographic approach and applies the theoretical lens of free innovation. Data stems from analyzing 1,798 forum threads based on players’ ideas and suggestions, 9 interviews with active forum contributors and 2 community managers. NVivo software was used to code the suggestion threads into themes. Subsequently, the themes were analyzed based on the extent to which they were implemented into the game within the timeframe of the first four months post-release. This study thus sheds light on community management in the video games industry and players spending their free time on idea generation. Moreover, through thematic coding, the article offers a potential method on how to converge the vast amount of qualitative data stemming from player communities’ suggestions.

  • Towards Zoomocracy : an Explorative Study on Virtual Democratic Decision Making in Swedish City Council Meetings in the Wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences 2022. - Honolulu : University of Hawaii at Mānoa. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 2563-2572
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Governmental decision making is essential to maintain democracy. The decision making formats and processes are institutionalized and follow strict formats for participation, debate and decisions. The constraints and lock-downs due to the covid-19 pandemic led to an extensive increase in the use of digital meeting tools to maintain democratic decision making through virtual meetings. Our main approach in this paper is to inductively explore the changes that occur when democratic meetings take place on-line through a quantitative text analysis and interviews. We delimit our focus to speech duration in recorded meetings. We find that the virtual meeting format changed meeting characteristics compared to on-site meetings. There were some changes in speech duration among councilors which has to be further investigated in a larger sample. The main contribution of this paper is the method to measure actual speech duration and compare how virtual meetings may influence the organization of democratic meetings.
