  • Conclusion : new forest owners under globalised, rural-urban relations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 303-314
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter summarises the trends and changes affecting rural development, in general, and forest ownership as a phenomenon, in particular, as they have been outlined in this volume. The chapter, and the book at large, illustrates that the extensive variations in forest owner characteristics may best be comprehended through complex conceptions, of not only rural but also urban populations and the intersections existing between them. The cases highlighted in this book thus in particular show upon the large but also changing role of forest ownership in Europe.

  • Introduction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 1-15
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter describes the multiple trends that have impacted European small-scale/private forest owners, and outlines the necessity to pay regard to forest within the context of rural literature. The chapter also outlines the European, and particularly the Swedish, case focus of the book: while comparatively little focus has so far been placed on forest in rural studies, it constitutes a case with relatively well-developed data that enable us to say something about the role of forest in relation to broader rural development. However, this also makes it crucial to contextualise this case in comparison with other examples throughout Europe, to illustrate the great variation in what forest ownership, forest use and the new forest owner may mean in different cases.

  • Is there a new European forest owner? : The institutional context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 17-55
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter describes how the forest owner can be seen as differently constructed in different European countries depending on, amongst other things, whether it has been necessary to re-create the forest owner and forest ownership tradition following restitution, forest or agricultural traditions, and the historical role of the small-scale forest owner. Patterns of international and national policy change, the role of supporting infrastructure such as forest owner organisations, and patterns of inheritance have also been important in constructing the forest owner. In that, the chapter contextualises and clarifies much of the case focus in other chapters—it also clarifies how different forest systems, forest owner structures, and thereby potentially also the role of forest in rural development and rural studies may vary in different countries.

  • Rural-urban policies : changing conceptions of the human-environment relationship
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 183-224
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter describes how understandings of the "rural" have progressed from a focus on either decline or amenity, whereby these more simplified understandings can be seen to have had an impact on rural policy development. The chapter argues that rural areas, including forests, need to be understood in relation to both production and integration with urban landscapes. It thus illustrates the role of both historical processes and policy in creating current understandings of the rural: drawing upon an example from the Swedish case, it amongst others shows that a redistributive tax system has played a larger and more crucial role than rural policy in retaining active rural areas in Sweden.

  • Forests in common and their contribution to local development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571168 - 9781137571151 ; , s. 261-302
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we look at the role that a forest held in common can play in supporting local development and promoting the livelihood of the local community. Four dissimilar cases in Italy, Slovenia, Sweden and UK are described and analysed by applying the Sustainable Livelihood Framework. Despite very different pre-requisites and local conditions, our results show that all cases contain rules to maintain the extent and function of natural assets, and they contributed to the mobilisation of different types of capital. In each case there is evidence of interaction with higher governance levels, which protects the group’s room for action. The provision of access to natural and physical resources for rural people in a broader sense illustrates the cases’ orientation towards public good.

  • Interactions between forest owners and their forests
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 97-137
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More than half of the forest land in Europe is privately owned, and ownership structure is known to have implications for management, production of timber and other forest products and services that support the transformation towards a green economy. This chapter provides examples of how we can gain knowledge about the forest and forest owner/user relationship from a structural point of view. Sweden is taken as an example because of the accessibility of continuous data on forest conditions, ownership and demographic data. It is concluded that the pace of change in ownership structure and forest management behaviour is slow. Further, neither the ongoing migration, urbanisation, ageing population nor the increased proportion of women seems to reduce the willingness to manage and harvest.

  • Is there an end to the concentration of businesses and people?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 139-181
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is extensive literature describing the mechanisms of economic growth, which has tended to occur in big cities. The emergence of knowledge economies has enhanced the importance of human capital - the success of companies is increasingly dependent on employees' ability to transform their knowledge and skills into new products that can satisfy rapidly changing demand from all over the world. This transformation of the economy creates major challenges for regions that do not have large, well-educated populations. Will rural areas stand a chance against the centripetal forces of agglomeration economies? This issue is addressed by focusing attention on a number of successful, forest-related companies running their operations far from metropolitan Sweden. This presentation is accompanied by a theoretical discussion that challenges the urban assumption.

  • Multi-level planning and conflicting interests in the forest landscape
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571168 - 9781137571151 ; , s. 225-259
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter describes and analyses overlapping planning structures and multi-level planning issues and how they affect current land use and management in the forest landscape. Forest land use in Sweden is based on a large proportion of privately owned forests with the primary purpose of producing timber for the forest industries. Nevertheless, the forests are also characterised by multiple uses and many stakeholders (economic as well as ecological and social) who express themselves and relate to forest management. In this chapter, we present a number of methods, both traditional and more recent, for managing multiple use of the forest landscape. These range from physical planning and the Swedish Right of Public Access to Natura 2000, forest certification, reindeer-husbandry plans, and scenario techniques.

  • Individual forest owners in context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Globalisation and change in forest ownership and forest use. - Ume : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137571151 - 9781137571168 ; , s. 57-95
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, changes that have taken place on an overarching level in society, such as globalisation, supranational agencies, privatisation and restitution, are discussed from the forest owners' perspective. The forces influencing forest owners and forest ownership as described in Chap. 2 in this volume are scrutinised and interpreted here on a micro level. Urbanisation, economic restructuring, demographic change and new ownership constellations are both drivers and consequences of changes in lifestyles, forest owner identity, place attachment and attitudes to the forest resource.
