  • A SOA-based framework for integration of intelligent rock bolts with internet of things
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467345699 - 9781467345682 ; , s. 1962-1967

    • The mining industry is seeing a bright future with a high demand for minerals and relatively high material prices. Much of this is driven by the rapid industrial expansion in countries such as China and others. However, even though the mining business seems promising, there are some important issues that must be addressed in order to maintain a cost-effective and competitive edge. Worker and environment safety, working conditions, are very important issues. Another issue is attracting skilled personal to work in the deep mines of the future.Today, the mining industry has problems hiring personnel, due to hazardous working environments and re-locating to the distant regions. If the workers’ safety could be increased, attracting skilled personnel would become one less problem. Rock bolts and shot-crete are in use today to reinforce tunnel walls, and expensive measurement devices are used in order to monitor seismic activity and rock stress. However, by not having real-time monitoring of rock bolts makes it difficult to monitor them. A better approach would be to make rock bolts intelligent and have them measure stress and seismic activity. Furthermore, by connecting the rock bolts to a network, real-time monitoring of them is made feasible. In this paper, we propose the merger of the Internet of Things (IoT) approach with traditional rock bolts, thereby allowing online monitoring of rock bolt status. This enables an increased possibility to enhance work safety by being able to detect anomalies on the rock earlier, thereby giving workers and machinery an earlier alarm to evacuate hazardous locations in the mine.

  • Design and simulation of a SOA-based system of systems for automation in the residential sector
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1976-1981
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today’s process industries typically utilise a verylarge set of multi-disciplinary, connected, heterogeneous systemscomposed of a large number of components, from individualsensors to whole control, monitoring and supervisory controlsystems. The use of such process control systems spans a widerange of application domains from traditional process industriesto power distribution and residential applications. Regardless ofthe application, the design, implementation, optimised operation, maintenance and monitoring of such complex systems is oftendifficult to effectively achieve. Therefore, there is a need for themigration of such systems to scalable and modular plug and playplatforms supported by effective engineering tools. This paper outlines a distributed modular service-basedapproach to the implementation of a real-time residentialautomation system application composed of heating, homeautomation and vehicle parking systems. The main focus of thispaper is on the design and simulation of this System of Systems(SoS) focusing on the home parking, heating and vehiclemonitoring application components and their interactions. Theuse of a component-based engineering approach is reported onproviding 3D modelling and simulation capabilities prior to thephysical implementation of the system, and from which theorchestration logic can be automatically generated. A potentialtoolkit for SOA-based application design and deployment issuggested.

  • Real-time complex event processing using concurrent reactive objects
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1994-1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) and Complex Event Processing (CEP) are established technologies in the area of business automation. In combination, SOA and CEP allow for event centric management and processing of information in complex distributed systems. Whereas systems for process monitoring and control traditionally have been deployed using dedicated buses and proprietary (often scan-based) protocols, a recent trend in process automation is towards adopting open Internet-based technologies. This trend is driven by the increasing number and capabilities of devices used for monitoring and control

  • A formal engineering approach for industrial SoA-based systems of systems
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1956-1961
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current implemented manufacturing and continuous production process systems are strongly being influenced by the fusion of mechatronics, communication, control and information technologies [2][3][4][5]. The miniaturization of control and automation devices with embedded intelligence is transforming the production systems into a very large infrastructure, where different systems interact in a structural and behavioral manner for pursuing common goals [17][16]. The result is a very large complex system-of systems (SoS) [19][24]. The application of the service-oriented architecture paradigm is appearing as a promising approach to develop and implement the control and management of those SoS [26].This paper describes an approach to support the engineering of service-oriented based Industrial System-of-Systems and presents the first results of application of the approach to a real heterogeneous system composed of a district-heating, transportation and an electrical power distribution system.

  • An RTOS-based Architecture for Industrial Wireless Sensor Network Stacks with Multi-Processor Support
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings ICIT 2013 - 2013 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT). - 9781467345675 - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1216-1221
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN) stacks requires the adoption of real time operation system (RTOS). Challenges exist especially in timing integrity and multi-processor support. As a solution, we propose an RTOS-based architecture for IWSN stacks with multi-processor support. It offers benefits in terms of platform independency, product life cycle, safety and security, system integration complexity, and performance scalability. An implemented WirelessHART stack has proven the feasibility of the proposed architecture in practical product design. And future challenges as well as suggestions to standard improvement are discussed.

  • A new decentralized voltage control scheme of an autonomous microgrid under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - : IEEE. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1812-1817
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an effective voltage control strategy for the autonomous operation of a medium voltage (MV) microgrid under nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions. The main objectives of this strategy are to effectively compensate the harmonic and negative-sequence currents of nonlinear and unbalanced loads using distributed generation (DG) units. The proposed control strategy consists of a multi-proportional resonant controller (MPRC) whose parameters are assigned with particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The optimization function is defined to minimize the tracking error at the specific harmonics considering the stability limitations. In this paper the performance of the proposed controller is investigated for a single DG unit. Due to the fact that DG units can be decentralized, this strategy generalizes for multi-DG unit networks. The performance of the proposed control scheme is verified by using digital time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment.

  • A wind turbine emulator for generator control algorithm development
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781467345699 ; , s. 228-233
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes an emulator for wind turbines which aims to be a base for the development of control algorithms for wind turbine generators. The emulator is physically composed by two servomotors in a back-to-back configuration, each of them controlled by a 4-kW power electronics converter. A FPGA-based control board is employed to model the effects of the wind, both in terms of turbulence and harmonics, and to emulate the mechanical characteristics of a wind turbine drive train. The models generate torque reference signals for the torque control of one of the two machines, which acts as a wind turbine. The second machine is used as a generator, controlled by the same FPGA-based board. The specific tasks of a wind turbine emulator are presented, describing in detail how they could be replicated on a small-scale test bench. The features of the actual emulator shown in the paper are discussed. Experimental results are presented, showing the benefits of a small-scale system for algorithm development.

  • An embedded stereo vision module for industrial vehicles automation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - : IEEE. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 52-57
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an embedded vision system based on reconfigurable hardware (FPGA) to perform stereo image processing and 3D mapping of sparse features for autonomous navigation and obstacle detection in industrial settings. We propose an EKF based visual SLAM to achieve a 6D localization of the vehicle even in non flat scenarios. The system uses vision as the only source of information. As a consequence, it operates regardless of the odometry from the vehicle since visual odometry is used. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Reliable flooding-based downlink transmissions for Industrial Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology. - 9781467345699 ; , s. 1377-1384
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable downlink transmissions from the sink to actuators for control data in Industrial Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (IWSANs) are extremely important for industrial control applications. However, on the network layer, existing routing protocols fail to fully support downlink transmissions for actuators, due to the insufficiency of reliability, robustness and real-time performance. In this paper, we propose a reliable flooding-based routing scheme focusing on downlink transmissions. Packets are forwarded to actuators according to weight values and the related node lists in intermediate nodes. Performance evaluations via simulations show that our protocol significantly outperforms traditional routing protocols in terms of reliability, transmission latency, network recovery time and network resource usage. © 2013 IEEE.
