  • On Enhancement of Inter-Activity for Knowledge Sharing in eHealth
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (COMM 2016). - : IEEE. - 9781467381970 ; , s. 247-250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, knowledge sharing raises as an important issue that challenges for the eHealth management system. It becomes one of the most demanding applications with references to the dynamic inter-activities among different health actors and the complex data structures involved in this application. In this paper, we suggest an activity theory based ontology model to scientifically represent various health actors in the eHealth system. The goal of the suggest model is to enhance the inter activities among these health actors for the efficient knowledge sharing purposes. We also develop a prototype software system based on the suggested ontology model. The survey results collected from the system users show the feasibility of the developed software system.

  • On Designing a Cost-Aware Virtual CDN for the Federated Cloud
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (COMM 2016). - : IEEE. - 9781467381970 ; , s. 255-260
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a prototype for a cost-aware, cloud-based content delivery network (CDN) suitable for a federated cloud scenario. The virtual CDN controller spawns and releases virtual caching proxies according to variations in user demand. A cost-based heuristic algorithm is used for selecting data centers where proxies are spawned. The functionality and performance of our virtual CDN prototype were evaluated in the XIFI federated OpenStack cloud. Initial results indicate that the virtual CDN can offer reliable and prompt service. Multimedia providers can use this virtual CDN solution to regulate expenses and have greater freedom in choosing the placement of virtual proxies as well as more flexibility in configuring the hardware resources available to the proxy (e.g., CPU cores, memory and storage).

  • Dealing with QoE and Power Consumption in Video Distribution Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (COMM 2016). - 9781467381970 ; , s. 3-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper is about the problem of reducing the power consumption in Video Distribution Networks (VDNs) under the condition of best performance provision in terms of Quality of Experience (QuE) measured at the end user. Related to this, it has been observed that, given an end-to-end video distribution network, it is the last networking segment ending to terminal that has the dominant role in the provision of end-user performance. On the other hand, the rest of the video distribution chain can be optimized such to reduce the power consumption under the requirements of provision of specific Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. The paper first provides an overview of VDNs, which is followed by a short presentation of the CONVINcE project. The second part is focused on the problems of performance provision in VDN in terms of best possible Quality of Experience and minimum end-to-end power consumption.

  • On Energy Consumption in Mobile Multimedia Networks with OpenFlow Switch
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (COMM 2016). - : IEEE. - 9781467381970 ; , s. 309-312
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In mobile multimedia networks, the video flow usually operates in an end-to-end manner from Head-End to mobile terminals. However, measuring the energy consumption associated with a video flow is a sophisticated process due to the complexity related to this. In the paper, a theoretical measurement approach is suggested to estimate the energy consumption of a video flow through mobile multimedia networks enhanced with the support of OpenFlow switch. Two different power models are built up to compute the traffic related energy consumption at the network element side. The numerical derivation of these two theoretical models is presented.
