  • MOPED : A Mobile Open Platform for Experimental Design of Cyber-Physical Systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The 40th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications SEAA 2014. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 423-430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the increasing importance of cyber-physical and embedded systems in industry, there is a strong demand for engineers with an updated knowledge on contemporary technology and methods in the area. This is a challenge for educators, in particular when it comes to creating hands-on experiences of real systems, due to their complexity and the fact that they are usually proprietary. Therefore, a laboratory environment that is representative of the industrial solutions is needed, with a focus on software and systems engineering issues. This paper describes such an environment, called the Mobile Open Platform for Experimental Design (MOPED). It consists of a model car chassis, equipped with a network of three control units based on standard hardware, and running the automotive software standard AUTOSAR, which consists of operating system, middleware, and application software structures. It is equipped with various sensors and actuators, and is open to extensions both in hardware and software. It also contains elements of future systems, since it allows connectivity to cloud services, development of federated embedded systems, and continuous deployment of new functionality. In this way, the platform provides a very relevant learning environment for cyber-physical systems, today and in the future.

  • Component Allocation Optimization for Heterogeneous CPU-GPU Embedded Systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The 40th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications SEAA 2014, Verona, 27-29 Aug. 2014. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 229-236
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a quest to improve system performance, embedded systems are today increasingly relying on heterogeneous platforms that combine different types of processing units such as CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. However, having better hardware capability alone does not guarantee higher performance; how functionality is allocated onto the appropriate processing units strongly impacts the system performance as well. Yet, with this increase in hardware complexity, finding suitable allocation schemes is becoming a challenge as many new constraints and requirements must now be taken into consideration. In this paper, we present a formal model for allocation optimization of embedded systems which contains a mix of CPU and GPU processing nodes. The allocation takes into consideration the software and hardware architectures, the system requirements and criteria upon which the allocation should be optimized. In its current version, optimized allocation schemes are generated through an integer programming technique to balance the system resource utilization and to optimize the system performance using the GPU resources.

  • Evolution of long-term industrial meta-models-an automotive case study of AUTOSAR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 40th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, SEAA 2014. - 1089-6503. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 141-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meta-models in software engineering are used to define properties of models. Therefore the evolution of the meta-models influences the evolution of the models and the software instantiated from them. The evolution of the meta-models is particularly problematic if the software has to instantiate two versions of the same meta-model- A situation common for long-term software development projects such as car development projects. In this paper, we present a case study of the evolution of the standardized meta-model used in the development of the automotive software systems-the AUTOSAR meta-model-at Volvo Car Corporation. The objective of this study is to assist automotive software designers in planning long term development projects based on multiple AUTOSAR meta-model versions. We achieve this by performing quantitative analysis of the AUTOSAR meta-model evolution in order to visualize the size and the complexity change between different meta-model versions and calculate the number of changes which need to be implemented to adopt a newer version. The analysis is done for each major role in the automotive development process affected by the changes.

  • From opinions to data-driven software R&D: A multi-case study on how to close the 'open loop' problem
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 40th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, SEAA 2014, Verona, Italy, 27-29 August 2014. - 1089-6503. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 9-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most software development companies the road mapping and requirements prioritization process is a complex process in which product management experiences difficulties in getting timely and accurate customer feedback. The feedback loop from customers is slow and often there is a lack of mechanisms that allow for efficient customer data collection and analysis. As a result, there is the risk that requirements prioritization becomes opinion-based rather than data-driven, and that R&D investments are made without an accurate way of continuously validating whether they correspond to customer needs. We call this phenomenon the 'open loop' problem, referring to the challenges for product management to get accurate and timely feedback from customers. To address this problem, we develop the HYPEX model (Hypothesis Experiment Data-Driven Development) that supports companies in running feature experiments to shorten customer feedback loops. We evaluate the model in three software development companies and observe how feature experiments increase the opportunity for data-driven software development.

  • Synthesis of adaptation plans for cloud infrastructure with hybrid cost models
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings : 40th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications. - : IEEE. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 443-450
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a method and a tool for devising adaptation plans for the deployment of software applications on cloud computing infrastructure comprising a combination of reserved and "pay-as-you-go" resources. Starting from a trace log that represents the expected workload pattern of the application, we exploit queuing theory results to synthesize an adaptation plan that manages the cloud elasticity in a cost-effective way. To this end, the amount of resources to be reserved for a long period is quantified in a first activity of the method. Then, as a second activity, the number and types of pay-as-you-go resources is assessed. The adaptation plan produced for a real web server is shown to be cost effective even when the actual workload differs from that in the trace log by as much as 5 -- 20%.

  • Scheduling and simulating wireless HART systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 318-319
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Control processes and the communication between them must be scheduled appropriately, such that the I/O data is correlated. Here, we illustrate the design and realization of a Wireless HART system development tool, meant to support design decisions in communication and processing scheduling.
