  • Deepening and broadening the field: Introduction to Research Handbook on Nonprofit Governance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Research Handbook on Nonprofit Governance. - : Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd. - 9781788114905 ; , s. 1-25
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this chapter is to deepen and broaden the reader’s understanding of nonprofit governance. The objective is pursued in three ways. First, the chapter offers a primer on the history and principles of nonprofit governance scholarship, for students and established researchers. This is achieved through attention to governance definitions; governance practices - boards, accountability and transparency, governance codes and collaborative governance - as they occur within organization type, stakeholder relationship and nonprofit regime contexts; and theoretical perspectives. Second, the work of contributors to the Research Handbook on Nonprofit Governance is contextualized within this governance ‘story’. The interplay means the chapter both serves as a standalone guide to the nonprofit governance concept and points to the scholars whose contributions are contemporary and authoritative. Third, the chapter critiques the limitations of the nonprofit governance literature and points to some of the lacunae - the gaps, the missing parts in the narrative. © Editors and Contributors Severally 2021.

  • Democratic governance in membership-based organizations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Research Handbook on Nonprofit Governance. - : Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd. - 9781788114905 ; , s. 258-278
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Previous research has often focused on the board of directors as the primary actor in the governance of membership-based organizations (MBOs). This chapter aims at a broader approach to MBOs’ internal democratic governance systems by casting the rank-and-file members as the main actors. Drawing on two models, one dealing with member influence and the other portraying single- and multilevel MBOs, the chapter discusses key elements in these organizations’ governance systems, including statutes, the board of directors, nomination committees, lay auditors, modes of member influence, appointment of elected representatives, annual meetings and general assemblies. The intent of the chapter is to raise awareness regarding the scope and complexity of governance in MBOs and to suggest some directions for future research. © Editors and Contributors Severally 2021.

  • Gate-keeping nonprofit governance : evaluative criteria and their rankings in nomination committee selection processes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Research handbook on nonprofit governance. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781788114905 - 9781788114912 ; , s. 279-293
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores Swedish national sport federation nomination committees’ use of evaluative criteria in board composition processes. As such, the chapter responds to more general calls for a broadened consideration of relevant governance actors and to appeals for attention to governance processes in member-based federations. We demonstrate the breadth of criteria at play in the processes of nomination of board members and the ways in which these are traded-off against each other to form value-based hierarchies. Based on the empirical analysis reported in the chapter, we discuss key characteristics of nomination committees’ work and propose a research agenda for this crucial but neglected governance function in nonprofit organizations.
