    • An OPO-based NICE-OHMS instrument for trace gas detection addressing fundamental vibration transitions in the mid-IR (3.2-3.9 µm) range has been developed. It shows a detection sensitivity for CH4 of 2.4×10−10cm−1Hz−1∕2 (corresponding to low ppt concentrations).

    • Structured illumination is an imaging method most commonly employed within the field of microscopy. However, recently the technique has spread into other scientific fields, such as for combustion research, where it has revealed new measurement opportunities. This paper describes how structured illumination can be employed for spray- and combustion research and highlights some of the recent progresses made towards temperature imaging, rapid data acquisition as well as detection of 'Dark species'.

    • A novel hybrid picosecond-nanosecond rotational CARS system is demonstrated for measurements of Raman linewidths of N2 and O2 at ambient conditions. Averaged data agree very well with previous results. The single-shot linewidth measurements are consistent with the linewidths extracted from averaged data. The potential for simultaneous thermometry and linewidth measurements on a single-shot basis is discussed.

    • In heterogeneous catalysis the reactions occur on the surface of a catalyst. To understand the reaction pathways, a detailed understanding on an atomic level is critical. However, the gas atmosphere surrounding the surface dictates the interaction between the surface and the gas. At low pressures this is often neglected, but as the community turns to higher pressures it becomes important to consider gas related effects. We have used laser diagnostics to characterize the gas distributions during catalysis and thereby been able to deduce information that would otherwise lay hidden. Several of our recent results are summarized and highlighted and simultaneous measurements of the surface structure using synchrotron based methods and the gas phase using laser diagnostics is discussed.
