• Governance of an Enterprise Social Intranet Implementation : The Statkraft Case
• 2015
• In: 23rd European Conference on Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Recent studies demonstrate that the implementation of enterprise social systems (ESSs) will transfer organizations into new paradigm of social business which results in enormous economic returns and competitive advantage. Social business creates a completely new way of working and organizing characterised by social collaboration, intrinsic knowledge sharing, voluntarily mass participation, just name a few. Thus, implementation of ESSs should tackle the uniqueness of the new way of working and organizing. However, there is a shortage of knowledge about implementation of these large enterprise systems. The purpose of this paper is to study governance model of ESSs implementation. A case study is conducted to investigate the implementation of the social intranet called the ‘Stream’ at Statkraft, which is a world-leading energy company in Norway. The governance model of ‘Stream’ emphasizes the close cooperation and accountability between corporate communication, human resources and IT, which implies paradigm shift in governance of implementing ESSs. Benefits and challenges in the implementation are also identified. Based on the knowledge and insights gained in the study, recommendations are proposed to assist the company in improving governance of ESSs implementation. The study contributes knowledge/know-how on governance of ESSs implementation.

• From contest to market entry : A longitudinal survey of innovation barriers constraining open data service development
• 2015
• In: ECIS 2015 Completed Research Papers. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• Open data services have emerged as a research field. One important area of investigation within this field is exploration into how sustainable open data markets are created. Contests have become a popular method to propel and catalyse open data service development providing services to such markets. Recent research has identified numerous innovation barriers hampering development adjacent to the contest in developers' effort to transform contest contributions to viable digital services based on open data. Little is however known about what innovation barriers over time constrain the post-contest process to transform initial innovations to finalized open data services ready for market entry. This paper presents a longitudinal survey of innovation barriers constraining teams performing open data service development after an innovation contest. The survey provides insights into 1) 24 innovation barriers constraining development, 2) a comparison of barrier importance based on team progress, and 3) a conceptualisation of phases structuring the process from contests to market entry, stipulating different innovation barriers impact open data service development. The results contribute to the understanding of how sustainable open data markets emerge and serve as a starting point for investigating how different stakeholders can manage innovation barriers constraining open data service development.

• User participation at a discount : Exploring the use and reuse of personas in public service development
• 2015
• In: ECIS 2015 PROCEEDINGS. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842 ; , s. paper 30-
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• In recent years, we have seen an ever increasing push for new public e-services. Such e-services must be useful and beneficial for governments but also for citizens. In order to develop e-services that are effective, efficient and satisfactory for the citizens, the citizens have to be kept in focus and be involved in the development process. However, municipalities face pressure to develop a wide range of e-services, but at the same time battle palpable scarce resources. In this paper, a concept that addresses this problem within an ongoing research project is presented. We express this concept as ‘figurative user participation through the use and reuse of empirically grounded personas with help of persona repository including usage guidance that is shared among several municipalities’. The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore municipalities’ perceptions and attitudes towards this concept. The result shows that the municipalities are positive to the concept and consider it having great potentials. However, some challenges and pitfalls have also been brought out that need to be taken into account and addressed.

• The Illusion of Structure : About Harmonization and Variation in Competence Management System Practices in a Public Healthcare Organization
• 2015
• In: ECIS 2015 Completed Research Papers. - Münster : ECIS. - 9783000502842 ; , s. 1-14
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• This paper reports on a study of the use of a competence management system in a public healthcare organization. Even though systems for documenting and managing competence information have been implemented widely in most sectors, there is a lack of research focusing the adoption and use of such systems in general, and in particular within the public sector. The use of the system was studied through interviews, observations as well as document studies. In our analysis, we focus on local adap- tation practices, and variations in use, as well as how this functionality is carried by social or materi- al parts of the system. By so doing, we show how contradictory perspectives of the system's purpose and use is present in the organization, and surprisingly unproblematic. We argue that our in-depth case analysis illustrates how efforts of standardization in a system benignly can co-exist with local adaptation and variation.

• Digital platform development : a service-oriented perspective
• 2015
• In: ECIS 2015 completed research papers. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• The traditional view of value is largely rooted in the material properties of physical goods. However, service-dominant logic tells us that value is not imbued in goods, but derived in its judicious application. A contextually bounded nature of value is highly relevant for the study of digital platforms given the reprogrammable nature of digital technology coupled with a necessity to serve several different stake-holders and applications. This paper applies servitization as a theoretical framework for illustrating the subjective and transitory value propositions that influence platform development. Based on a case study of a firm that has transitioned from product supplier to provider of a platform for digital services, it is evident that value propositions are ambivalent, yet vital components in the evolution of platforms. Fur-thermore, we may discern that platform providers are faced with value propositions that are multidi-rectional, multidimensional, and offered from a variety of sources.

• Towards Theorising Information Systems from a Neurobiological Perspective
• 2015
• In: ECIS Proceedings 2015 Completed Research Papers. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842 ; , s. 179-
• Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
• In spite of more than 25 years of research, the nature of Information Systems (ISs) remains elusive. To this end, a new conceptualization of ISs from a neurobiological perspective is proposed. ISs are seen as instruments for action, which in turn requires coordination. We posit that the phylogenetic evolution has endowed humans with a neurobiological substrate enabling coordination. The construct of activity modalities – objectivation, contextualization, spatialization, temporalization, stabilization, and transition – is introduced as inherent factors in this substrate. These modalities provide an analytical link for integrating the neural and social realms; thus enabling IS conceptualization as a dialectical relationship between coordinative, individual brain structures and the IT artefact. Consequently, the IS is seen as intrinsically related to the individual. We exemplify implications for the IS discipline by discussing how the concept of sociomateriality can be articulated from the neurobiological perspective. As a result, the “individual” is to put on equal theoretical footing as the “social” and “material”, thus providing a way to disentangle the problematic conflation of the “social” and the “human” in sociomaterial contributions. In conclusion, we claim that the neurobiological approach opens up for hitherto untrodden paths to advance the IS discipline.
