  • The Double-sided 4-port Bow-tie Antenna: A New Compact Wideband MIMO Antenna
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013, Gothenburg, Sweden, 8-12 April 2013. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 3731-3735
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new compact ultra-wideband 4-port antenna for use in MIMO systems, such as in reverberation chambers for OTA measurements. The new antenna is based on the self-grounded bow-tie antenna with a very compact size. The design was done through an optimization by employing the genetic algorithm in order to obtain low reflection coefficient and mutual coupling between ports. The designed antenna has an embedded radiation efficiency higher than -0.35 dB, reflection coefficient below -7 dB, mutual coupling between ports below - 12.5 dB (in most frequencies below -20 dB), over a frequency range of 0.4–15 GHz.

  • LTE MIMO performance measurements on trains
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). - New York : IEEE. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 2327-2330
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Providing passenger internet on board trains with continuous connectivity at high speeds and over large rural distances is a challenging issue. A frequently used solution to the problem is to use an on board WiFi network connected to the 3G or 4G networks deployed outside the train. In order to be able to provide the capacity and the data rates that tomorrow's business travelers are expecting it has been suggested to use a combination of MIMO and carrier aggregation in the LTE-Advance standard. In this study, we practically investigate the plausibility of using MIMO functionality in an 900 LTE system when the receive antennas are mounted at a train roof about 4m above ground and the base stations antennas are on average placed 2.3km away from the track in towers with an average height of 45m and, hence, most of the time in line of site. It is found that along our test route MIMO is in practice supported by the radio channel at around 70% of the time when the train is travelling with an average speed of 185km/h and the MIMO antennas are mounted 10.5m apart.

  • The story of Allgon : HF, VHF, cellular and microwave antennas during allmost 60 years
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). - : IEEE. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 3171-3173
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Allgon, 'The Antenna Specialist', was a leading international design house and manufacturer of antennas for almost 60 years. The company was started in Stockholm in 1947 under the name of 'Antennspecialisten', by the Swedish engineer Torbjörn Cramner and his wife Veronica. In 1951 the company moved to Åkersberga north of Stockholm where its main facilities where located until the late 90's. During its life time the company designed and produced antennas for HF, VHF, Cellular and Microwave frequency bands, and for military, emergency, private and cellular radio systems. The company was in 2004 acquired by the US based company Powerwave but still today many of its original antenna designs are in production and many thousands of its base station antennas for mobile networks are still deployed all around the World.

  • A Simple Method for Optimal Antenna Array Thinning Using a Broadside MaxGain Beamformer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013, Gothenburg, Sweden, 8-12 April 2013. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 1799-1802
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A simple and effective method for optimal antenna array thinning employing a broadside-scanned maximum gain beamformer is presented. Starting from a fully populated λ/2-spaced regular lattice, the array is thinned by progressively 'turning off' the element(s) with the lowest weight(s) of the weight vector realizing maximum gain. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method is validated against a rigorous combinatorial search method that can be used to find the optimal irregular array configuration solution in small to moderate-sized arrays. Furthermore, to evaluate the robustness of the proposed approach, the effects of beam steering have been investigated for linear arrays consisting of 10-40 antenna elements as well. Good results can be obtained for close to broadside scanned arrays, which is of importance for the directly radiating arrays that are currently being considered as modern satellite systems.

  • Wide Band On-Chip Slot Antenna with Back-Side Etched Trench for W-band Sensing Applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). - 9788890701832 ; , s. 1576-1579
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the design and characterization of a highly integrated, wideband on-chip radiometer, composed of a slot antenna, RF-MEMS Dicke Switch, LNA and a wideband power detector. The highly integrated single-chip RF front-end is dedicated for broadband sensing up to 110 GHz. Both antenna and radiometer are fabricated in a 0.25 mu m SiGe BiCMOS process. The antenna design takes benefit of the back-side etched trench, offered by the technology. This is used to reduce losses due to the presence of the low resistivity silicon substrate. Additionally, the trench is specially shaped, as to improve the wideband matching of the antenna. The on-chip slot antenna design covers a wide bandwidth (70-110 GHz) with 0 dBi gain and 64% efficiency, both simulated at 94 GHz. The measured bandwidth spans 85 to 105 GHz. The W-band SiGe detector circuit has close to 20 GHz of operational bandwidth (S-11 <=-10 dB at 75-92 GHz) and presents a responsivity of 3-5kV/W (NEP=10-16 pW/Hz(1/2)) at 83-94 GHz.

  • Topology optimization of UWB monopole antennas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP2013). - New York : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9788890701832 - 9781467321877 ; , s. 1488-1492
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Topology optimization technique is used for complete layout optimization of the radiating element of a planar monopole antenna. The design objective is to find a conductivity distribution that maximizes the energy received by the planar monopole over the frequency band 1-10 GHz. The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) is used for the numerical calculations, and an adjoint problem is derived to calculate the corresponding sensitivities. Numerical results show a promising use of topology optimization techniques for the systematic design of ultrawideband monopoles.

  • Diversity gains of multiport mobile terminals in multipath for talk positions on both sides of the head
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 863-866
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper studies the over-the-air (OTA) performance of a mobile terminal. A practical two-port mobile terminal model on the left side and the right side of the head for both standard cheek position and standard tilt position is used to study the diversity gains. The diversity gain has been determined by measurements in a reverberation chamber as well as by simulations using the far field patterns from CST Microwave Studio, and then exposing these patterns to rich isotropic multipath (RIMP) environment in a ray-based simulation tool.

  • Analysis of Antenna Pattern Overlap Matrix in Correlated Nonuniform Multipath Environments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 2113-2117
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the covariance matrix of received voltage signals across ports of a multiport antenna in correlated multipath environments is formulated. This eventually leads to some expressions for mean effective gain and directivity in these environments, which to our best knowledge has not been addressed before. The notion of pattern overlap matrix is utilized to coin correlated pattern overlap matrix. We show the crucial role of the latter parameter in general correlated multipath environments.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). - 9788890701832 ; , s. 439-442
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance of a conformal dual patch antenna design for wireless sensor networks were measured and evaluated in a real world multi-scattering environment. Both simulated and measured radiation patterns when using the antenna as a two element phased array were measured and corresponded well. The environment was measured and show strong fading characteristics. The measured data shows that the proposed structure gives a distinct advantage to the nodes communication compared to single element antennas while keeping the form factor suitable for integration of embedded hardware.

  • Investigation of compensating the ground plane effect through array's inter-element coupling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP). - New York : IEEE. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 1264-1267
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bandwidth and directivity are coupled and an increase in directivity provided by a ground plane tends to reduce bandwidth. Over the last decade it has been indicated that highly coupled antenna elements have the ability to provide wide band properties. Such structures often suffer from a bandwidth reduction when they are placed over a ground plane. This study focuses on the interaction between the ground plane and the inter-element coupling. The coupling can partially be modified and hence it can be seen as an extra degree of freedom, a mean to widen bandwidth for strongly coupled arrays in the presence of a ground plane.

  • Calculating signal correlation in lossy dipole arrays using scattering parameters and efficiencies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013. - : EurAAP. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 - 9781467321877 ; , s. 519-523
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Correlation coefficient, as a critical performance metric of multiple antenna systems, can be calculated from the 3D radiation patterns of the antennas for multipath environments with uniform 3D angular power spectrum. A simpler, faster and lower cost approach uses the antennas' scattering parameters to determine correlation coefficient. However, the method assumes lossless antennas, and hence only achieves good accuracy for antennas with high radiation efficiencies. In this work, a method for calculating correlation coefficients in lossy dipole arrays is proposed, using only the scattering parameters and radiation efficiencies. The method is based on the equivalent circuit of antennas, and it gives a significantly better estimate of the correlation coefficient than the existing methods. The proposed method is also applied to two folded monopole antennas in a compact terminal to demonstrate its effectiveness.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 1342-1346, s. 1342-1346
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Test and evaluation of wireless communication performance with cars can be done in many ways. One approach, for both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) tests, is to use a multipath propagation simulator to achieve realistic signal environments for the different communication systems under test. Multipath propagation simulators have previously been shown to be useful for testing mobile handsets. Specific issues related to tests with cars are the large size of the test object and the disturbances it can cause. In this paper we experimentally study how different design parameters of the multipath propagation simulator affect the received signals. The analysis of the setup as well as the data is performed using the so-called 'Design of Experiments' method.

  • Ingår i: 2013 7th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2013. - 9788890701832 ; , s. 3152-3155
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish radio astronomy and its development are synonymous with the formation and development of the Onsala Space Observatory at Chalmers University of Technology. The observatory grew out of the ionospheric research activities of prof. Olof Rydbeck, and his subsequent interest in radio astronomy that was stimulated during his years in the US. The increasing problems with radio interference in the Gothenburg area, eventually led to a donation of land on the Onsala peninsula, which made it possible to create a radio astronomical observatory in the late 1940:ies. This was a time when funding for research infrastructure was not easily obtained, and the first significant step came when the observatory bought five German second-world-war radar antennas (7.5 m Würzburg Riese) from Norway and brought them to the Onsala site. This made it possible to start mapping cosmic hydrogen, through the 21 cm line, in our galaxy, the Milky Way, and also to perform solar observations. The observatory was officially inaugurated in 1955, and Fig. 1 shows the installations in the late 1950:ies.

    • The radio astronomy community is engaged in the development of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA will have 10-100 times improved sensitivity and 105 times improved survey speed compared to existing radio telescopes. Besides dishes, Aperture Arrays (AA) are a promising concept: they potentially offer a very large field of view in theory only limited by the computing power and they hold promise for multioctave frequency coverage. Provided that e.g. polarimetric and calibration issues can be solved, this approach is the preferred solution for low frequency astronomy, with the SKA AA-low system, specified to run from 70 to 450MHz, and the AA-mid system designed for 400-1420MHz. This contribution will address some key issues to be solved using input from demonstrators.

  • Adaptive impedance matching performance of MIMO terminals with different bandwidth and isolation properties in realistic user scenarios
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP), 2013. - 2164-3342. - 9788890701832 - 9781467321877 ; , s. 2590-2594
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the metric of channel capacity, three dual-antenna multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terminals with adaptive impedance matching were evaluated at LTE Band 13 in four different user scenarios using simulation. Each of the three terminals is equipped with a slot-monopole antenna and a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA). The slot monopole is fixed at one edge of the chassis, whereas the location of the PIFA differs among the terminals to provide different bandwidth and isolation characteristics in free space (FS). The results show that adaptive matching leads to an average capacity gain of up to 24% at the center frequency, favoring the terminal with the smallest antenna bandwidth and the largest isolation. However, the maximum capacity gain from adaptive matching decreases to 15.7% when averaged over the entire system bandwidth. Moreover, the terminal with moderate antenna bandwidth and isolation offers the best overall absolute capacity performance under different user scenarios, indicating a design tradeoff. These results highlight important design considerations for MIMO terminals with adaptive impedance matching.

    • In the previous measurement uncertainty work by Kildal, et al. (2012), the random line-of-sight (LOS) component in a reverberation chamber (RC) was assumed to be Gaussian distributed without quantitative justification. In the present paper, we apply goodness-of-fit (GOF) test to the measured LOS component samples to check its Gaussianity. It is shown that the Gaussianity hypothesis of the distribution of the random LOS component is accepted at most of the frequencies, which justifies the Gaussian LOS component assumption.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a high-gain microstrip (MS) grid array antenna (GAA) on low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC). The high-gain MS GAA includes four sub-antennas. Dimensions of the sub-antenna are 15 × 15 × 0.5 mm3, which is composed of four sub-arrays. Preliminarily tested results show that the sub-antenna features fractional impedance bandwidth (BW) 58-60 GHz and 62-63.5 GHz, 3-dB gain BW 59.8-65 GHz with the maximum gain 17.3 at 64.3 GHz, and vertical beams in the broadside direction from 57-64 GHz. The highgain MS GAA has dimensions of 30 × 30 × 0.5 mm3. Simulated results show that it has impedance BW 55-64.6 GHz, 3-dB gain BW 57.5-64.8 GHz with the maximum gain of 22.8 dBi at 60.8 GHz, and vertical beams in the broadside direction from 57-64 GHz. It is a capable candidate for 60-GHz applications, and even higher frequency band like the 140 and 220 GHz.

    • In this paper, MIMO reference antennas with different correlation coefficients are proposed for Over-The-Air (OTA) applications. The correlation can be simply controlled through a slot etched on a dual-feed PIFA with the similar total efficiency. Three kinds of situations are investigated with the proposed method: high correlation (HC), mid correlation (MC), and low correlation (LC). In order to verify the introduced idea, the measurements of correlations and efficiencies are carried out in a reverberation chamber. The simulation and measurement agree well with each other.
