  • A survivability-based testbed for comparing threat evaluation algorithms

    • Threat evaluation is the process in which threat values are assigned to detected targets, based upon the inferred capabilities and intents of the targets to inflict damage to blue force defended assets. This is a high-level information fusion process of high importance, since the calculated threat values are used as input when blue force weapon systems are allocated to the incoming targets, a process often referred to as weapon allocation. Threat values can be calculated from a number of different parameters, such as the position of the closest point of approach (CPA) with respect to blue force defended assets, time required to reach the CPA, the target’s velocity, and its type. A number of algorithms for calculating threat values have been suggested throughout literature, however, criteria to evaluate the performance of such algorithms seem to be lacking. In this paper, we discuss different ways to assess the performance of threat evaluation algorithms. In specific, we describe how threat evaluation algorithms can be compared to each other, using a survivability criterion. Survivability is measured by running the threat evaluation algorithms on simulated scenarios and using the resulting threat values as input to a weapon allocation module. Depending on how well the threat evaluation is performed, the ability of the blue force weapon systems to eliminate the incoming targets will vary (and thereby also the survivability of the defended assets).

  • Exploring a Multi-Tiered Whiteboard Infrastructure for Information Fusion in Wireless Sensor Networks
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the second Skövde Workshop on Information Fusion Topics. - Skövde : University of Skövde. - 9789163336874 - 9789163336973 ; , s. 63-66
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is important for the life time of a wireless sensornetwork (WSN) to reduce the amount of data transferred throughthe network. As a typical approach, sensor data is filtered beforepropagating updates, to a node at the edge of a network, whereit can be fused. Information Fusion inside the network canreduce the amount of data propagated, by fusing data beforeand in propagation, without losing the information value in it. Weexplore infrastructures for distributed fusion, with fusion nodeslocated at strategic nodes inside the network, as an approachof structured distributed fusion for WSNs. We propose aninfrastructure for a white-board approach that uses a distributedreal-time database with virtual full replication. With such anapproach, both raw and fused data are logically available at allnodes and physically available where used, such that only useddata will be propagated and use resources. The actual resourceusage will be relative to the actual demand for data, rather thanto the amount of data published at the white-board. We presentan exploration of such an infrastructure, and points out futurekey research questions for such a white-board approach.

  • Formalising Distributed Cognition into a Tool to Capture Information Fusion Processes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the second Skövde Workshop on Information Fusion Topics (SWIFT 2008). - Skövde : University of Skövde. - 9789163336973 ; , s. 34-38
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presented research is motivated by the limited ability of current methods to capture the nature of information fusion processes. Fusion processes typically include both humans and technology, hence, there is a need for a new way to analyse such processes. With the aid of distributed cognition, the interaction between decision makers and IF technology can be captured more clearly, and thereby critical bottlenecks can be identified which may require further automation. Application of the tool may advance the research area of information fusion.

  • Reflections on fusion systems requirements analysis for maintenance planning
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2nd Skövde Workshop on Information Fusion planning. - Skövde, Sweden. - 9789163336973 ; , s. 5-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-defense related industry and public organizations are becoming more and more interested to utilize the power of information fusion applications. The journey from “we have a lot of data from different sources and we would like it to be fused” to well-defined requirements for information fusion applications may however be long and the steps to be taken far from clear. This research in progress paper reflects on the initial steps of a systems requirements analysis in a case study at a maintenance service organization. What questions need to be answered according to existing requirements analysis methods? Where and how can answers be obtained? What problems can arise and how can one handle these? The experiences gathered and discussed can be a basis of the improvement of requirements analysis methods and give a richer understanding of the application of such methods.
