  • Preventive maintenance is an enabler for operation excellence in support processes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 17th QMOD-ICQSS Conference, Prague, Czech Republic. - Lund : Lund University Library Press. - 9789176230862
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to analyse and determine how Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) can be applied within the support process as well as to identify possible effects from an employee and business perspective.Design/method/approach – A qualitative research approach was selected. Empirical data was gathered using semi-structured interviews at one case company, but from several teams, that had applied preventive maintenance. The result was then used to extrapolate how TPM can be applied in a support process as well as to identify business and employee effects.Findings – TPM in a Lean office environment can create values both in a business and anemployee dimension. In the employee dimension TPM reduces the risk of missing/forgetting areas of responsibility and creates more involvement. In the business dimension objectivessuch as cost, quality and supporting the reduction of waste improved.Preventive maintenance meetings can be included and performed once a month in the ordinary departmental “stand-up meetings”. Methods like 5S, which need to be updated on a continuous basis, and standardized maintenance should also be connected to the TPM work. But first all employees should be trained in order to have the same direction/behavior.Originality/value – The paper gives practitioners a perspective on how TPM can be applied within the administrative processes in a production company.

  • Quality and equality? : A gender perspective on quality management research
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd QMOD-ICQSS Conference 2019: Leadership Strategies for Quality, Sustainability and Innovation in the 4th Industrial Revolution. - 9789176230862
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this paper is twofold, to investigate the representatio n of female researchers in QMOD publications and to describe in what way a gender perspective has beenapplied within QMOD publications.Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper is based on a literature review an d analysis ofthe papers in the QMOD proceedings for ever y other year from 2012 to 2018. After excluding papers where gender could not be identified for the first or second author, the final sampleincluded 555 papers. The papers were analysed with respect to gender in authorship, nationality, type of paper, QM research area, domain and gender perspective. Analysis of quantitative data was made with SPSS and Chi square testing. The papers with a gender perspective were further categorized through qualitativ e content analysis.Findings: The quantitative analysis showed that gender representation of first authors were 43.2% female and 56.8% male. Males accounted for most of the single authored papers (61%). The most common research areas and domains differed between genders. Female studied lean and research on employee and student related areas and the domains education and health care to a greater extent than males. Males, to a greater extent studied quality management in general and reliability and safety related topics and the domain manufacturing. Eighteen papers with a gender perspective were identified. These originated from 13 different countries and there were equal number of female and male first authors . A major topic was customer or user focus in pr oduct or service development with a dominance of papers focusing on the service sector.Practical implications: For researchers the results of the study demonstrate that there is stilla general need to increase the awareness of gender issues in QM research, both in terms of ensuring that ge nder issues are integrated in research projects and that any gender is not underrepresented in specific research roles. In product development there may also be a nuntapped potential in further quality development of products and services by focusing more on gender.Originality/Value of paper: There are no similar studies within the QM field. Gender is an area receiving increased interest within academia in terms of reques ts from research funding and increased awareness in higher education. The study shows that t here is a need for increased attention on gender issues within QM research.

  • Capturing Value-based leadership in Practice: : Insights from developing and applying an AI-interview guide
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Challenges and Opportunities of Quality in the 4th Industrial Revolution. - 9789176230862
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractOne of the most critical aspects for building quality and innovation in organizations is the role of values. Performance suffers when organizations fail to prioritize values. A challenge for many leaders is to understand deep-rooted values together with what they are and how they are developed. These deep-rooted values are reflected in the behaviors, language and signs occurring in the organization and can be seen as the organizations culture. When a culture is shaped, leadership is central and the managers in the organization are vital. Managers in an organization affect the predominating culture through their behaviors and approach to their co-workers. This make it interesting to try to find out underlying values held by managers striving for good leadership and performance. Underlying values can be unconscious and taken for granted, and thereby hard to ask about.  By using an interview guide inspired by Appreciative Inquiry (AI) (an approach based on generativity and positivity), underlying values and the leadership used by top managers can be discovered. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results from the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) inspired interviews to explore the underlying values held by top manager and to identify soft aspects of leadership. Methodology/approach – Top managers were interviewed as a part of a research project with the aim to support the development of value-based leadership that integrates company values, organizational culture, customer needs and sustainable development. A structured interview guide, inspired by AI, was developed and used to pinpoint their motivation and vision of a good organization in order to understand the values the leaders had and to identify soft aspects of leadership.  The interviews were analyzed in workshops with the whole research group and structured and visualized through affinity chart. Findings – The results show underlying values held by top managers and identified soft aspects of leadership. Practical implications – The presented interview guide can be used to identify the top managers underlying values and the presented results from the interviews can be used to inspire other leaders to develop their leadership in their striving of good leadership and effective organizations.

  • Can Lean values contribute to Sustainable Development
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 17th Qmod-ICQSS. - 9789176230862
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of this paper was to study interactions between Sustainable Development and Lean values by comparing two organizations, one with Technical Communication in-house and one with Technical Communication partly outsourced.Methodology/approach – A literature study with focus on Lean and Sustainable Development values was carried out. Interviews with companies that provide Technical Communication have been conducted to identify Lean categories. The identified categories have been compared to the findings in Lean and Sustainable Development values.Findings – The literature study and our results indicate that presence of Lean values support Sustainable Development, but it requires that organizations focus on the culture and values. The result indicates that if Technical Communication has a low status the company put low value on Sustainable Development. If Technical Communication is produced in-house customer involvement might be easier to achieve.Practical implications – The identification of Lean values can be a starting point for organizations to work with Sustainable Development as it helps the organizations to focus on significant areas.Paper type – Case study

  • ISO26000 and Beyond : Driving force for CSR and Quality Management towards co-creating value
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Int. QMOD-ICQSS conference proceedings. - Seoul. - 9789176230862
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Purpose – The aim of this paper is to provide a deeper understanding of ISO26000 towards reporting on corporate social responsibility and the drive to go beyond for values based governance thinking. The objective of this paper is to examine whether the process of organizational change in implementing the environmental and quality standards can act as a driving force for sustainable development (SD) and value creation and role of ISO26000 as “facilitator” for reporting it. Understanding how social responsibility as a business practice is institutionalized in organizations and the continuous improvement thinking of quality improvements  is deemed essential in securing sustainable service business in which social and environmental perspectives and governance issues are embedded. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a qualitative research approach, using multiple case studies to undertake an analysis of the role of ISO26000 and the drive to go beyond for sustainable service business in different contexts of globally integrated retail business, manufacturing organization and public transit service. Three case studies, one each of global retail business (IKEA), manufacturing organization (Löfbergs) and regional public transit (SL/Nobina), are selected. Findings – The paper demonstrates that “Beyond ISO26000”, as driving force for CSR and Quality Management towards co-creating value, contributes to securing sustainable service business embedded on social and environmental perspectives and governance issues. It has been shown this based on “why and how” - by understanding how “facilitating and unpredictability” are shaping business models to secure sustainable service business. The study has also shown “shared responsibility” is essential for understanding that environment quality standards and reporting CSR are not merely systems of command and control, but are essential for resource integration to secure sustainable service business development. Research limitations/implications – The study provides useful insights into the need to go beyond successful adoption of ISO26000 as an active tool for SD and value creation. Future research in this area should focus on generalizing the present findings to securing sustainable service business embedded on social and environmental perspectives and governance issues in other empirical settings and conceptualization. Originality/value – The paper makes an original contribution to the on-going discussions on quality and environment management standards and service research. In service research, the main theoretical challenges of understanding and integrating value co-creation and sustainable development as a transformative service research thinking. Keyword(s): ISO26000; corporate social responsibility; environmental and quality standards; facilitating; and shared responsibilityArticle Type: research paper
