  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an area of excellence in research and innovation, EffectiveInnovation & Organization (EIO) at Luleå University ofTechnology (LTU) represents an important initiative aimedat addressing societal challenges by combining engineeringand social science research. EIO enables the pooling of resourcesfrom various scientific disciplines to address manyof the societal challenges Sweden is currently facing. Thisbook is one result from such pooling of disciplines, resourcesand cross-disciplinary discussions. Here, some leading EIOresearchers have jointly analysed and reflected upon fivekey societal challenges to identify some of their implicationsand future pathways for research at LTU. All of these challengesspan multiple scientific domains, and competence ininnovation and organisation will be critical if they are to beaddressed effectively.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Addressing Societal Challenges. - Luleå : Luleå University of Technology. - 9789177900610 - 9789177900733 ; , s. 39-52
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Work is a central part of our lives in many aspects. Half ofour awake time is for most of us performed as paid work. Atwork, we create the values we need to live the life we desire. At work, we are socialized and shaped into the human beingswe are. We are all concerned about how our work willbe in the future; will we be able to handle the new technologyor will we be replaced by a robot? These are important questionsbut at the same time we must be aware that the futurework is shaped here and now. LTU should be an active partwhen we create the work of the future. This means that weneed to get a picture of what is happening and then relateto that development but we also need a vision of where wewant to go

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Addressing Societal Challenges. - Luleå : Luleå University of Technology. - 9789177900610 - 9789177900733 ; , s. 53-70
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lack lustre performance of Swedish compulsory schoolsover the past few decades does not need to define its future. As this report will show, the main challenges facing the Swedisheducation system do not stem from a lack of resources. The effective implementation of research based innovationsand improvements in organization could tackle many of thesystemic weaknesses in the education system, thereby ensuringa brighter future. By addressing existing difficulties in theteaching and delivery of the curriculum and ensuring pupilswho are at risk are able to flourish, learning outcomes will beimproved. This, in turn, will reduce inequality, thereby improvingthe life-opportunities of young people and maintaining thehigh standard of living enjoyed in Sweden.

  • Ingår i: Addressing Societal Challenges. - Luleå : Luleå University of Technology. - 9789177900610 - 9789177900733 ; , s. 71-85
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Good health has always been crucial to people’s life situation.Throughout the history of health care, cures for diseaseshave been discovered, and great strides have been made toallow humans to live longer and healthier lives. However, newchallenges arise, for example, mental ill-health in childrenand young adults, coping with an older population, and servicingsparsely populated areas, such as the Arctic regions. Moreover, increased migration brings unique challenges andliving in a digital world increase health risks. However, inevery challenge, there is an opportunity. At LTU, health is aprioritized area, with a focus on innovative interdisciplinaryresearch, for example, including the perspective of health inArctic living, widening educational research to include healthpromotion, and exploring technology within the e-health field. One possible approach is to support people to increase controlover and improve their health at individual and organizationallevels, as well as using social innovations to promotehealth with a “cool” northern perspective.

  • Digitalization
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Addressing Societal Challenges. - Luleå : Luleå University of Technology. - 9789177900610 - 9789177900733 ; , s. 23-38
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Digitalization is a fundamental disruptive force triggered by FourthIndustrial Revolution and Internet of Things, which has changed theway we approach and think about business processes and activities. In this increasingly digital age, relationships between organizations(i.e. companies, governmental agencies, and others) and customersare being reshaped and new business models are being invented. Today, companies across industries need agility, speed, flexibility, andthe ability to pivot rapidly to pursue new business opportunities andkeep up with a fast-changing global business environment. Digitalizationemphasizes the importance of placing advanced technology atthe heart of all processes, products, and services. However, much ofthe promised value of digitalization for business and society has notyet been fully realized. Academia will play a vital role in developingthe required knowledge and skills at the individual, company, andsocial levels. LTU can contribute to digital transformation by upgradingteaching and research so that students and researchers learn, understand, and apply digitalization for business development, innovationmanagement, and social value creation.

  • Climate and the Environment : Managing the Transition
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Addressing Societal Challenges. - Luleå : Luleå University of Technology. - 9789177900610 - 9789177900733 ; , s. 7-22
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The transition to a green economy likely requires a re-assessmentof the roles of the private industry and the state, respectively. Theadvent of so-called green capitalism and sustainability entrepreneurshipcan be catalysts to this process. Still, the extent of the contributionof green capitalism is uncertain; there is likely to be key roles forthe state. Policy instrument mixes, including direct support to greentechnology, will be required to address the challenges associatedwith diffuse emissions and green innovation. This is, though, in itselfa challenge to policy-making at different levels, e.g., understandinghow various policies interact and how the institutional contexts canaffect the effectiveness of various instruments. For LTU the abovesuggests that efforts aimed at green technical innovation must acknowledgethe subsequent need for new and complementing organizationaland societal innovations.
