  • Value of Information and Timing-aware Scheduling for Federated Learning
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE CONFERENCE ON STANDARDS FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING, CSCN. - : IEEE. - 9798350395389 - 9798350395396 ; , s. 94-99
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data possesses significant value as it fuels advancements in AI. However, protecting the privacy of the data generated by end-user devices has become crucial. Federated Learning (FL) offers a solution by preserving data privacy during training. FL brings the model directly to User Equipments (UEs) for local training by an access point (AP). The AP periodically aggregates trained parameters from UEs, enhancing the model and sending it back to them. However, due to communication constraints, only a subset of UEs can update parameters during each global aggregation. Consequently, developing innovative scheduling algorithms is vital to enable complete FL implementation and enhance FL convergence. In this paper, we present a scheduling policy combining Age of Update (AoU) concepts and data Shapley metrics. This policy considers the freshness and value of received parameter updates from individual data sources and real-time channel conditions to enhance FL's operational efficiency. The proposed algorithm is simple, and its effectiveness is demonstrated through simulations.

  • Standardized and Interoperable Digital Twins
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE Conference on Standards for Communications and Networking (CSCN). - : IEEE. - 9798350395389 - 9798350395396 ; , s. 382-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Originally developed for enabling smart manufacturing, applications of digital twins now extend to ports, smart cities and supply chains. However, the wide range of applications results in a lack of uniform understanding of what constitutes a digital twin and how to implement it. Recent research therefore underlines the importance of standardization and interoperability as key prerequisites for building effective DT systems for complex applications. This poster thus provides an overview of the efforts of standardization bodies that foster the interoperability of digital twins.

  • Load Balancing Traffic Among Kubernetes Replicas by Utilizing Workload Estimation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE CONFERENCE ON STANDARDS FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING, CSCN. - : IEEE. - 9798350395389 - 9798350395396 ; , s. 353-356
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As global mobile network usage increases rapidly and users demand lower latency, the importance of stable 5G networks is more critical than ever. Orchestrating mobile network backend by using Kubernetes is an up and coming way to ensure reliability and stability. This paper aims to identify ways to use load balancing inside a Kubernetes cluster to increase throughput and reduce latency in a mobile network system. We modeled a simplified mobile network system in a Kubernetes cluster and implemented a load balancer at the Service level. By running simulations on this model, we compared three existing Kubernetes algorithms and a dynamic algorithm using estimated workloads in terms of latency and throughput. The existing algorithms that are compared include Round Robin, Least Connections, and Random. The results show a potential to reduce latency by up to 31% compared to the native Random algorithm when utilizing a dynamic load balancer at the Service level.

  • SafeSmart : A VANET-LTE-based solution for faster and safer response in critical situations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Conference on Standards for Communications and Networking. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE. - 9798350395389 ; , s. 47-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the use of Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) for traffic light preemption in emergency scenarios. The proposed system, called SafeSmart, utilizes VANET-based vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to exchange data between traffic lights and emergency vehicles, improving safety and saving time. SafeSmart attempts to predict the arrival time of emergency vehicles at intersections using historical data and requests signal preemption for the selected route. This paper describes and evaluates the proposed approach through simulations using state-of-the-art simulators SUMO and OMNeT++ and real-world traffic data (Luxembourg SUMO Traffic (LuST) Scenario). The results demonstrate improved trip times and increased safety for emergency vehicles and general public on the road. © 2023 IEEE.
