  • A Bad Apple Went Away: Exploring Resilience among Bitcoin Entrepreneurs
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The emerging digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin has made waves in mainstream media  across the globe, as have the numerous extreme events that have rocked it. One such event,  the bankruptcy of a prominent Bitcoin exchange called Mt. Gox, particularly shocked the  emerging sociotechnical field. However, it is not clear how the numerous entrepreneurial  firms operating in this field survived this shock.

  • A Longitudinal Investigation Of Business Angel Relationship Risk Mitigation Strategies Within Investments - A Three-dimensional Approach
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business angel (BA) investing is associated with various types of risks, where relationship risk often is highlighted as being especially critical (Fiet, 1995). Three investor strategies for mitigating relationship risks associated with BA investing in young private firms can be traced in the literature: (i) indirect control through monitoring and rewarding/punishing entrepreneur behavior and output, (ii) direct control through active involvement, and (iii) relying on mutual trust (Van Osnabrugge and Robinson, 2000; Maxwell and Lévesque, 2011). While early research in the field adopted a rather static view on BA categorization (Coveney and Moore, 1998; Sørheim and Landström, 2001), more contemporary research shows that BAs change investment roles across investments (Avdeitchikova, 2008; Lahti, 2011). However, whether BAs behave differently regarding risk mitigation within investments is less explored. This explorative study contributes to the opening of the black box of how BAs may shift risk mitigation strategies over time within single investments.

  • Income Inequality and Income Mobility in the Scandinavian Countries Compared to the United States
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: The Review of Income and Wealth. - : Blackwell Publishers Ltd. - 1475-4991 .- 0034-6586. ; 48:4, s. 443-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper compares income inequality and income mobility in the Scandinavian countries and the United States during 1980-90. The results suggest that inequality is greater in the United States than in the Scandinavian countries and that this inequality ranking of countries remains unchanged when the accounting period of income is extended from one to eleven years. The pattern of mobility turns out to be remarkably similar, in the sense that the proportionate reduction in inequality from extending the accounting period of income is much the same. But we do find evidence of greater dispersion of first differences of relative earnings and income in the United States. Relative income changes are associated with changes in labor market and marital status in all four countries, but the magnitude of such changes are largest in the United States.

  • 2023. - 1
  • Ingår i: Handbook of the Economics of Education. - : Elsevier. - 1574-0692. - 9780323992404 - 0323992404 ; 6, s. 135-185
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • School districts in the United States and around the world are increasingly moving away from traditional neighborhood school assignment, in which pupils attend closest schools to their homes. Instead, they allow families to choose from schools within district boundaries. This creates a market with parental demand over publicly-supplied school seats. More frequently than ever, this market for school seats is cleared via market design solutions grounded in recent advances in matching and mechanism design theory. The literature on school choice is reviewed with emphasis placed on the trade-offs among policy objectives and best practices in the design of admissions processes. It is concluded with a brief discussion about how data generated by assignment algorithms can be used to answer contemporary empirical questions about school effectiveness and policy interventions.

  • Think tanks: a new organizational animal in Swedish civil society
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Policy institutes, or “think tanks”, are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in our societies. Few if any studies have, however, analysed think tanks explicitly as a civil society phenomenon, or linked the proliferation of this relatively new type of actor to the transformation of civil society structures and to the transformations of the function(s) of civil society actors in society. This article begins to address this gap by focusing on the evolving field of Swedish think tanks. Our study, based on qualitative interviews with 25 Swedish think tank directors, indicates that these executives perceive the traditional corporatist channels for institutionalized civil society access to policymaking as decreasing in importance. The reduced influence of the classical Swedish popular movements is interpreted by the respondents as having created a space for their own organizations in civil society and in the Swedish policy-making arena.

  • Towards a cancer mission in Horizon Europe: recommendations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Molecular Oncology. - : Wiley Open Access. - 1878-0261 .- 1574-7891. ; 14:8, s. 1589-1615
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comprehensive translational cancer research approach focused on personalized and precision medicine, and covering the entire cancer research–care–prevention continuum has the potential to achieve in 2030 a 10-year cancer-specific survival for 75% of patients diagnosed in European Union (EU) member states with a well-developed healthcare system. Concerted actions across this continuum that spans from basic and preclinical research through clinical and prevention research to outcomes research, along with the establishment of interconnected high-quality infrastructures for translational research, clinical and prevention trials and outcomes research, will ensure that science-driven and social innovations benefit patients and individuals at risk across the EU. European infrastructures involving comprehensive cancer centres (CCCs) and CCC-like entities will provide researchers with access to the required critical mass of patients, biological materials and technological resources and can bridge research with healthcare systems. Here, we prioritize research areas to ensure a balanced research portfolio and provide recommendations for achieving key targets. Meeting these targets will require harmonization of EU and national priorities and policies, improved research coordination at the national, regional and EU level and increasingly efficient and flexible funding mechanisms. Long-term support by the EU and commitment of Member States to specialized schemes are also needed for the establishment and sustainability of trans-border infrastructures and networks. In addition to effectively engaging policymakers, all relevant stakeholders within the entire continuum should consensually inform policy through evidence-based advice.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SSRN Electronic Journal. - : SSRN. - 1556-5068 .- 1556-5068.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The optimization of fines to deter and detect cartel behavior is one of the main goals of competition policy. Although it is generally argued that fines should be high to be deterrent, the debate on what constitutes an optimal fine is unsettled and some authors suggest using profits (rather than turnover) to calculate "optimal" fines. We exploit data on cartel convictions by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) between 2009 and 2021, which is particularly useful to study this issue as it allows for fines to be calculated using profits or turnover. We examine how much cartel members can “save” in monetary sanctions relative to its legal maximum. In doing so, we also examine the determinants of fines and leniency program reductions for firms, associations and individuals. We find that: (i) using a profit metric leads to larger relative fines; (ii) multiple offenders can save a larger proportion of the fine; and (iii) firms in larger cartels receive lower relative fines. We also show how the cartel type affects the relative savings from fines (RSF); and that fines are far from the legal maximum (thus decreasing the incentive to apply for leniency)

  • Accounting in networks
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Accounting in Networks is the first book that in a comprehensive way covers the emerging issue of accounting and control in horizontal relations across legally independent organizations. During the last 20 years, organisations have shown an increased interest in collaborations that cross company boundaries. New organisational forms, such as alliances, partnerships, joint ventures, outsourcing and networks have received increased attention. This development has pushed management accounting researchers into examining the lateral effects of accounting. This book examines these lateral effects on accounting, and creates a comprehensive summary of what has been achieved so far and what interesting developments will occur in the coming ten years. The book covers a variety of inter-organizational settings – dyads, networks, joint ventures, public sector – and the roles of accounting therein. It also deals with specific inter-organizational accounting techniques – customer accounting, target costing and open book accounting – which companies use to manage in a world of inter-organizational relationships and networks. The book also covers different theoretical perspectives – transactional cost economics, the industrial-network approach, actor-network theory, institutional theory – on accounting in networks. Each chapter focus on a specific angle of accounting in networks, assess theoretical and empirical evidence, summarize the current position/debate and discuss promising avenues for future research.

  • Accounting, Innovation and Inter-Organisational Relationships
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Successful innovation is a true challenge and especially when today's companies are intertwined in close inter-organisational relationships and networks with e.g. customers and suppliers. Research has indicated that accounting can play important roles in such innovation processes, but there is little in-depth systematic knowledge about this issue. ã Accounting, Innovation and Inter-Organisational Relationships gathers leading researchers from all around the world to argue for the importance of more systematic knowledge about accounting, innovation and inter-organisational relationships. ã Accounting, Innovation and Inter-Organisational Relationships thus becomes an important source for researchers and practitioners interested in accounting and inter-organisational relationships as well as the related disciplines of management, marketing, innovation and strategy.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Law and Economics. - : University of Chicago. - 1537-5285 .- 0022-2186. ; 56:4, s. 997-1037
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When contracts are incomplete, dismissal laws prevent employers from arbitrarily discharging employees and thereby limit employers' ability to hold up innovating employees after an innovation is successful. Therefore, dismissal laws can enhance employees' innovative efforts and encourage firms to invest in risky but potentially groundbreaking projects. Other forms of labor laws that do not affect dismissal of employees do not have this bright side. We find support for these predictions in empirical tests that exploit country-level changes in dismissal laws in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany: more stringent dismissal laws foster innovation, particularly in innovation-intensive industries, but other labor laws do not.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Any large dataset can be analyzed in a number of ways, and it is possible that the use of different analysis strategies will lead to different results and conclusions. One way to assess whether the results obtained depend on the analysis strategy chosen is to employ multiple analysts and leave each of them free to follow their own approach. Here, we present consensus-based guidance for conducting and reporting such multi-analyst studies, and we discuss how broader adoption of the multi-analyst approach has the potential to strengthen the robustness of results and conclusions obtained from analyses of datasets in basic and applied research.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Finance. - : Blackwell Publishing Inc. - 1540-6261 .- 0022-1082. ; 62:1, s. 217-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the consequences of the board's dual role as advisor as well as monitor of management. Given this dual role, the CEO faces a trade-off in disclosing information to the board: If he reveals his information, he receives better advice; however, an informed board will also monitor him more intensively. Since an independent board is a tougher monitor, the CEO may be reluctant to share information with it. Thus, management-friendly boards can be optimal. Using the insights from the model, we analyze the differences between sole and dual board systems. We highlight several policy implications of our analysis.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Review of Finance. - : Wiley. - 1369-412X. ; 12:2, s. 133-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public outrage over executive compensation reached an all-time high during the financial crisis. Around the world, many argued that CEOs and boards were immoral in setting their pay and pressured governments to impose restrictions on executive pay. Using a unique sample of data on human values for CEOs, we show that CEOs and directors have different values than general members of the population. CEOs and directors place more emphasis on power and achievement values than members of the population, and they emphasize self-direction values more. However, values appear to have little explanatory power for pay, in contrast to economic variables. While some CEOs may be unethical in setting their pay, our results suggest that pay is not a matter of values on average.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier: 24 months. - 0014-2921. ; 64, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the interdependency of political institutions from the voter's perspective. Specifically, we are interested in: (1) Does the partisan identity of the mayor influence the voter's decision in the subsequent town council election?; (2) Does this partisan identity influence the vote in ensuing higher level elections?; and (3) Do voters condition their vote for the mayor on the result of the last council election? We rely on a regression discontinuity design focusing on close election outcomes based on municipal level data for Germany. We find (1) that the party of the mayor can receive a bonus of 4-6 percentage points in vote share in the next town council election (depending on the timing of the local elections). (2) The mayor partisan identity does not affect federal or European election outcomes within the same municipality. And (3), we show that voters punish mayor candidates of parties that performed strongly in earlier council elections. Throughout the paper, we explore how the findigs can be related to an incumbency externality effect and to the theory of voter preferences for divided government.

  • When can we trust population thresholds in regression discontinuity designs? : a comment on Egger and Koethenbuerger
  • 2010
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A recent literature has used variation just around deterministic legislative population thresholds to identify the causal effects of institutional changes. This paper reviews the use of regression discontinuity designs using such population thresholds. Our concern involves three arguments: (1) simultaneous exogenous (co-)treatment, (2) simultaneous endogenous choices and (3) manipulation and precise control over population measures. Revisiting the study by Egger and Koethenbuerger (2010), who analyse the relationship between council size and government spending, we present new evidence that these three concerns do matter for causal analysis. Our results suggest that empirical designs using population thresholds are only to be used with utmost care and confidence in the precise institutional setting.

  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We show that trade credit in production networks is important for the transmission of unconventional monetary policy. We find that firms with bonds eligible for purchase under the European Central Bank’s Corporate Sector Purchase Program act as financial intermediaries and extend more trade credit to their customers. The increase in trade credit flows is more pronounced from core countries to periphery countries and towards financially constrained customers. Customers increase investment and employment in response to the additional financing, while suppliers with eligible bonds increase their customer base, potentially favoring upstream industry concentration. Our findings suggest that the trade credit channel of monetary policy produces heterogeneous effects on regions, industries, and firms.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 2:1, s. 88-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the challenges of introducing new approaches to the care of deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems. The specific study of early intervention programs within the area of psychosocial disturbances will be used to explore the interplay between emerging research results and the introduction of new approaches in different functionally specialized welfare carrying organizations. This paper is based on a collaborative research effort between researchers from education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics and business administration and key actors from schools, police, criminal care, social security administrations, municipal health care and municipal politicians and administrative managers. The paper demonstrates that successful introduction of new coping strategies necessitates significant efforts to support the bridging of boundaries, the challenging of legacies and the learning from evidence to change established structures.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Management science, founded by reflexive practicing managers, is defined today by a discourse dominated and driven by academics’ ideals on theoretical and methodological rigor. However, various stakeholders call for a renewal by the introduction of different collaborative research approaches. Besides questions on ontology, epistemology, and rigor, two fundamental questions still lack a convincing answer: 1. Can management research contribute to management practice? If so, can practicing managers be convinced of the added value of management research? 2. Can management research gain from true collaboration with organizations? If so, can academic researchers be convinced of the added value of the true collaboration in management research? These questions need to be answered not only through academic debates and stakeholder statements but also through real experimentation and reflection based on the results of the collaborations. This chapter uses a series of experiments with collaborative and interdisciplinary management research that have been performed since 1988 at a group of Swedish universities involving Swedish companies and organizations. By using illustrations from the experiments and their formation, the chapter discusses and analyzes how the strategic discourse and intent expressed by stakeholders are put into action from the perspective of a research organization pursuing a collaborative approach.

  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite its strategic importance most firms managing complex product development fail to meet their pre-set or emerging targets. This thesis argues that this is due to a number of limitations in the fundamental assumptions behind the dominant approach based on planning. Two alternative approaches are introduced and elaborated based on extensive empirical investigation of five organizational settings at Ericsson applying the dominant approach and two organizational settings also at Ericsson that repeatedly succeed to meet pre-set and emerging targets. The two alternative approaches; integrationdriven developmentand dynamic synchronization are based on integration, building dependencies, allocating resources to the boundaries and building a capacity for real-time handling of both emerging problems and opportunities rather than minimizing deviations from the pre-set plan.

    • This paper investigates the performance of various monetary policy rules in an open economy with incomplete exchange rate pass-through. Implementing monetary policy through an exchange rate augmented policy rule does not improve social welfare compared to using an optimized Taylor rule, irrespective of the degree of pass-through. A direct exchange rate response improves welfare only if the other reaction coefficients, on inflation and output, are sub-optimal. However, an indirect exchange rate response, through a policy reaction to Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rather than to domestic inflation, is welfare enhancing. This result is independent of whether society values domestic or CPI inflation stabilization.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the trade-offs between stabilizing CPI inflation and alternative measures of the output gap in Ramses, the Riksbank's estimated dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model of a small open economy. Our main finding is that the trade-off between stabilizing CPI inflation and the output gap strongly depends on which concept of potential output in the output gap between output and potential output is used in the loss function. If potential output is defined as a smooth trend this trade-off is much more pronounced compared to the case when potential output is defined as the output level that would prevail if prices and wages were flexible.

  • 2001
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The central bank's optimal reaction to foreign and domestic shocks is analyzed in an inflation targeting model allowing for incomplete exchange rate pass-through. Limited pass-through is incorporated through nominal rigidities in an aggregate supply-aggregate demand model derived from some microfoundations. Three main results are obtained. First, the results suggest that the interest rate response to foreign shocks is smaller when pass-through is low. Second, the inflation-output variability trade-off becomes more favourable as pass-through decreases. Third, lower pass-through, that is larger nominal rigidity, leads to higher exchange rate volatility. With exogenous nominal price stickiness, part of the required relative price adjustment is provided through larger movements in the endogenously determined exchange rate.

  • Optimal monetary policy delegation under incomplete exchange rate pass-through
  • 2001
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The central bank’s optimal objective function is analyzed in a small open economy model allowing for incomplete exchange rate pass-through. The results indicate that social welfare can only be marginally improved by including an explicit exchange-rate term in the delegated objective function, irrespective of the degree of pass-through. An implicit response to the exchange rate, through Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation targeting is, however, beneficial. Welfare can, moreover, be enhanced by appointing a central banker with a greater preference for interest rate smoothing than that of the society, as a result of surpassing some of the stabilization bias arising under a discretionary policy. Consequently, there are welfare gains from monetary policy inertia. The optimal degree of interest rate smoothing is increasing in the degree of pass-through.

    • The often-noted positive increase in women’s participation in the workforce has not been observed equally across sectors, countries, or continents. Current literature on women’s careers, work opportunities, and experiences has examined diverse individual and contextual factors that enable or hinder their respective career progression and access to leadership positions. Building on and extending those themes, this presenter symposium adopts a multi-layered approach/lens to examine women’s career opportunities and leadership experiences in diverse organizational, professional, national and regional settings. Incorporating theoretical, ontological and epistemological diversity and drawing on systematic reviews and empirical evidence, the collection of papers showcase innovative insights into women’s career opportunities and experiences over time, including their access to and experience of leadership roles. In line with this year’s AOM theme “Creating A Better World Together”, the symposium will generate critical reflection for gender-inclusive careers, HRM and leadership scholarship, discourse, policy, and practice in various contexts such as USA, Canada, UK, Belgium, Sweden, India, Bangladesh, Mexico.

    • Business & Management (B&M) schools and the wider academic context have been characterized as based on a traditional, linear male model according to which academics focus on their career only, work full- time, and have no family responsibilities In line with the current AOM theme “Putting the Worker Front and Center”, this symposium brings together four papers that showcase theoretical and practical insights to achieve gender equality in higher education institutions. The symposium starts by providing a scoping review of gender bias in academia and goes beyond shedding light on barriers, to focus on showcasing effective actions taken to reach gender equality in academic institutions in Lebanon, and across a variety of European countries including Greece, Sweden, the UK, Netherlands, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, France, and Belgium. The takeaways of this symposium provide culturally diversified insights into the progress made towards achieving gender equality in academia, with reflections on both theoretical and practical implications on gender equality in academia.

    • Recent evidence points towards significant belief formation frictions and forecast sluggishness. In this paper, we build a bounded rationality New Keynesian model, estimated to match the degree of forecast sluggishness present in the data. We find that bounded rationality induces enough myopia and intrinsic persistence, diminishing the influence of consumption habits and price indexation. Additionally, the bounded rationality model generates impulse response dynamics to monetary policy shocks that resemble those observed in empirical estimations. This study highlights the significance of bounded rationality in capturing real-world dynamics and provides valuable insights into the role of belief formation frictions in macroeconomic modeling.

    • In recent years many parliaments have become fragmented and polarized, with difficulties to form government. Traditional party alliances have changed, new parties have been established, and some of these are shunned by the traditional parties. Fragile minority governments are formed and break up. We propose a game-theoretic framework for analysis of political power in parliaments for situations when party affilations change and new coalitions are formed. More speciffically, we use and modify tools from cooperative game theory, in particular Myerson (1977) and Alonso-Meijide and Carreras (2011). The analytical framework is applied to the current Swedish parliament

  • Rationality in the consumer credit market
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Handbook of US Consumer Economics. - : Academic Press. - 9780128135242 ; , s. 121-139
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A significant share of the population continues to rely on alternative financial services (AFS) outside the mainstream banking system to satisfy their credit needs. For instance, the most recent FDIC national survey (2017) shows that one-quarter of US households have used AFS in the last year. Skiba and Tobacman (2009) document that payday lenders have more storefronts in the United States than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined and pawnbrokers continue to serve the financial needs of low-income families as they have done for centuries (Bos et al. (2012). Academics and policymakers are concerned about the use of AFS products, as they charge very high fees, have very high interest rates, and are susceptible to deceptive and predatory lending practices (Bhutta et al. (2015); Campbell et al. (2011); Morse (2011); Melzer (2011); Bhutta et al. (2015)). In this chapter we study the choice between uncollateralized mainstream credit (credit cards, credit lines, and installment loans) and alternative credit (pawn loans). Our objective is to test the conjecture that alternative credit markets are exploiting creditworthy borrowers by charging them high fees and interest rates. We have a very simple thought experiment in mind that will allow us to test the above conjecture. If we can back out the true underwriting model for a bank that issues uncollateralized mainstream credit and then test whether a borrower who generally takes out alternative credit can be approved for mainstream credit using this underwriting model, it would provide empirical proof for the statements made by academics and policymakers that consumers are making irrational decisions by taking out expensive loans. Alternatively, if borrowers using alternative credit cannot be approved for these mainstream loans, then it would appear that they are making a rational choice to access alternative credit despite the higher cost.

  • Incentives and redistribution in the welfare state: The Swedish tax reform
  • 1998. - Subsequent edition
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book reviews the lessons from the Swedish 1991 tax reform, the most far-reaching tax  reform in any Western industrialized country in the post-war period. The authors discuss a range of behavioural responses (including tax planning, savings, labour supply, investment, etc), and assess the overall effects on efficiency and equity. They also draw lessons for tax reform more generally. The book should be of interest to anyone with an interest in tax policy and tax reform evaluation.
