- Este trabalho é uma análise da alternância entre /l/, /r/ e/d/ na linguagem de comunidades latino-americanas de forte presença africana ouafrodescendente. Os dados examinados provêm de uma série de estudos linguísticosanteriores e fontes literárias em espanhol e em português que incluemrepresentações da fala de africanos e seus descendentes. Duas perguntasnorteiam o presente estudo: Quais são os fonemas que se “confundem” e em queposições? Até que ponto a “confusão” é frequente nas variedades em questão? Apartir destas perguntas discutem-se explicações para esta mudança baseadas emdados que apontam seja para a deriva ou evolução natural das variedadesibéricas, seja para o contato entre línguas ibéricas e africanas. A análise dosdados revela que alguns destes fonemas são trocados de forma sistemática emposições específicas unicamente em variedades de espanhol e português queevoluíram em contato com línguas africanas.

- The present thesis addresses the relationship between the structure and social functions of language through the study of an Afro-Brazilian Portuguese speech community. The adopted methodological, analytical, and theoretical standpoints have their origin in linguistic anthropology, social psychology of language and discourse analysis. A set of data was collected during extensive fieldwork in Salvador (Brazil), and consists of recordings of informal conversations with and between followers of Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion.Focusing on the communicative process in a specific communicative setting, the linguistic analyses illustrate the relationship between language and identity by examining theway in which expressions of African origin function as identity markers. In order to connect such Africanisms used by Candomblé followers in their everyday speech with the linguistic attitudes and ideologies found in Brazilian society throughout history, an interdisciplinary approach was called for and factors that affect the speech community’s ethnolinguistic vitality were explored. Linguistic attitudes and ideologies that have influenced group vitality were analyzed in the socio-political context (or macro-context). At the same time, the purpose was to understand communication within the sacred space of Candomblé by examining issues such as changes in linguistic forms and functions in the communicative situation (or microcontext).Apart from revealing patterns of communication in Candomblé communities, the results of the analyses show how linguistic changes such as re-Africanization are triggered by changes of attitudes in society. These changes affect speakers’ identities and language use within speech communities.

- The present article presents and compares speech varieties associated with two elements of Afro-Brazilian traditions: pretos velhos, i.e. spirits of Black slaves in Umbanda, an Afro-Latin American religion; and Pai João, i.e. Father John, a character from a cycle of traditional stories gathered by various folklorists. While Pai João has been compared to Uncle Tom, the pretos-velhos that we meet in Umbanda communities, are understood as old African slaves that sometimes possess adepts during the state of trance. Both reveal a linguistic behaviour that is distinct from local norms: a language variety marked by a set of features associated with the speech used by Africans during slavery. The presence of the same linguistic characteristics in contemporary oral representations complements the older written sources that have been analyzed until present.

- Divided into two sections, this chapter presents Lusophone Africa as a multilingual region and offers an overview centered on recent sociolinguistic studies with a focus on Portuguese, including the widely spoken Portuguese-lexified creoles of Africa. The first section includes a brief literature review consisting primarily of studies about language contact, variation and bi-/multilingualism from a sociohistorical perspective with an emphasis on Portuguese-lexified creoles and African varieties of Portuguese. The second section focuses on recurring topics in Applied African Sociolinguistics during the last decade, mainly related to language and power and frequently applied to language-in-education and general language policies. The final remarks point out selected topics that merit further study.

Prohibición de su uso dentro de la Administración Pública e Instituciones de Enseñanza públicas y privadas”. Monzillo quiere prohibir o censurar el lenguaje inclusivo, y plantea una visión extremadamente reducida del debate sobre el tema en las lenguas románicas.

- During the 1800s until the First World War, the migration to Brazil by Swedish citizens reached several thousands. The majority of these migrants were poor laborers or peasants traveling in the hope of finding a prosperous life in the new country. The Swedish migrants migrated to the new country with minimal economic resources at their disposal and with limited opportunities to decide on their own situation. This article is concerned with the migrants’ representation of their routes in different Swedish newspapers or booklets at the time of their migration. These texts provide insights into the conditions the migrants experienced while traveling to the new country and establishing themselves there, as well as the confinements they experienced when encountering a powerful migration regime linked to the Brazilian government and the migration industry that consisted of agents that organized and administered the travel as well as ex-migrants of Swedish or other Scandinavian origin that offered different kinds of services. The article discusses how the Swedish migrants accounted for their attempts to improve their life-situation while dependent on the migration industry for their survival. However, their strategies also included networking with their friends and neighbors for both community and instrumental reasons. In this perspective, the migrants’ interest in publishing their experiences on the routes fits into their attempts to reclaim social agency and expand their social networks to include the broader Swedish society. One conclusion of the study is that the transatlantic migration of the 1800s seemingly had a resemblance to the current migration from the Global South toward the Global North; the migrants are struggling against exploitation and a powerful migration regime by investing their engagement in a larger social network.
