  • Critically ill neonates displayed stable vital parameters and reduced metabolic acidosis during neonatal emergency airborne transport in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : WILEY. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 107:8, s. 1357-1361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study evaluated the medical quality of acute airborne transports carried out by a neonatal emergency transport service in a Swedish healthcare region from 2012 to 2015. Methods: The transport charts and patient records of all infants transported to the regional centre were reviewed for transport indications and vital parameters and outcomes. Results: We identified 187 acute airborne transports and the main indications for referral were therapeutic hypothermia after perinatal asphyxia, extremely preterm birth and respiratory failure. There were 37 deaths, but none of these occurred during transport and none of the deaths that occurred within 24 hours after transport were found to be related to the transport per se. No differences were found in vital parameters or ventilator settings before and after transport, except for an improvement in blood pH (7.22 +/- 0.13 versus 7.27 +/- 0.13, mean +/- SD, p < 0.01), due to a decrease in base deficit (-8.0 +/- 6.8 versus -5.4 +/- 6.3 mmol, p < 0.001), while the partial pressure of carbon dioxide remained unchanged. Conclusion: During air transport, critically ill neonates displayed stable vital parameters and reduced metabolic acidosis. No transport-related mortality was found, but the high number of extremely preterm infants transported indicates the potential for improving in-utero transport.

  • Digital micromirror devices in Raman trace detection of explosives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Detection and Sensing of Mines, Explosive Objects, and Obscured Targets XXI. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9781510600645
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Imaging Raman spectroscopy based on tunable filters is an established technique for detecting single explosives particles at stand-off distances. However, large light losses are inherent in the design due to sequential imaging at different wavelengths, leading to effective transmission often well below 1 %. The use of digital micromirror devices (DMD) and compressive sensing (CS) in imaging Raman explosives trace detection can improve light throughput and add significant flexibility compared to existing systems. DMDs are based on mature microelectronics technology, and are compact, scalable, and can be customized for specific tasks, including new functions not available with current technologies. This paper has been focusing on investigating how a DMD can be used when applying CS-based imaging Raman spectroscopy on stand-off explosives trace detection, and evaluating the performance in terms of light throughput, image reconstruction ability and potential detection limits. This type of setup also gives the possibility to combine imaging Raman with non-spatially resolved fluorescence suppression techniques, such as Kerr gating. The system used consists of a 2nd harmonics Nd:YAG laser for sample excitation, collection optics, DMD, CMOS-camera and a spectrometer with ICCD camera for signal gating and detection. Initial results for compressive sensing imaging Raman shows a stable reconstruction procedure even at low signals and in presence of interfering background signal. It is also shown to give increased effective light transmission without sacrificing molecular specificity or area coverage compared to filter based imaging Raman. At the same time it adds flexibility so the setup can be customized for new functionality.

  • Analysis of WC grain growth during sintering using electron backscatter diffraction and image analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International journal of refractory metals & hard materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-4368. ; 26:5, s. 449-455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The WC carbide grain size is important for the technological properties of cemented carbide cutting tools. in the present work the WC carbide grain size distribution is determined after milling and sintering for 0.25, 1 and 8 h at 1430 degrees C. The WC grain size distribution, both for the powder after milling and the sintered specimens, is determined by two different methods, i.e. image analysis on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It should be noted that in this work the 2D grain size distribution is considered. The EBSD analysis clearly shows that the special 12 boundaries are present in the powder and that their fraction decreases during sintering and particularly during the early stages. When the 12 boundaries are omitted in the EBSD analysis the results of the grain size measurements for the two methods agree quite well.

  • Body size mediates latitudinal population differences in response to Bd infection in two amphibian species
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is a generalist pathogen which has caused amphibian population declines worldwide. In many species Bd infection causes the disease chytridiomycosis, leading to high mortality. However, infection may cause sub-lethal fitness effects even in species that are resistant or tolerant to Bd. Moreover, populations of the same species may differ in their sensitivity to Bd, but the factors behind this variation are poorly understood. Here we exposed two common North European amphibians (moor frog Rana arvalis, common toad Bufo bufo) from two latitudinally divergent regions to two different BdGPL strains in a laboratory experiment. We found that Bd exposure lowered survival in both species, but this effect was much stronger in B. bufo.  Moreover, survival was lower in the northern region in both species, this difference again being much stronger in B. bufo. Northern individuals were smaller in both species and the survival difference between regions was size mediated with smaller individuals being more sensitive to Bd. We discuss potential additional factors contributing to this result. Bd exposure also led to sub-lethal effects in terms of reduced growth in both species suggesting that even individuals surviving the infection may have reduced fitness mediated by reduction if body size. However, we did not detect any differences in amphibian responses to the two Bd strains.

  • Body size mediates latitudinal population differences in the response to chytrid fungus infection in two amphibians
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Oecologia. - 0029-8549 .- 1432-1939. ; 204:1, s. 71-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factors behind intraspecific variation in sensitivity to pathogens remain poorly understood. We investigated how geographical origin in two North European amphibians affects tolerance to infection by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a generalist pathogen which has caused amphibian population declines worldwide. We exposed newly metamorphosed individuals of moor frog Rana arvalis and common toad Bufo bufo from two latitudinal regions to two different BdGPL strains. We measured survival and growth as infections may cause sub-lethal effects in fitness components even in the absence of mortality. Infection loads were higher in B. bufo than in R. arvalis, and smaller individuals had generally higher infection loads. B. bufo had high mortality in response to Bd infection, whereas there was little mortality in R. arvalis. Bd-mediated mortality was size-dependent and high-latitude individuals were smaller leading to high mortality in the northern B. bufo. Bd exposure led to sub-lethal effects in terms of reduced growth suggesting that individuals surviving the infection may have reduced fitness mediated by smaller body size. In both host species, the Swedish Bd strain caused stronger sublethal effects than the British strain. We suggest that high-latitude populations can be more vulnerable to chytrids than those from lower latitudes and discuss the possible mechanisms how body size and host geographical origin contribute to the present results.

  • 3D analysis of phase separation in ferritic stainless steels
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on 3D Materials Science. - Cham : John Wiley & Sons. - 9781118470398 ; , s. 221-226
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The embrittlement of ferritic stainless steels during low temperature aging is attributed to the phase separation with Fe and Cr demixing. The small scale of the decomposed structure with only minor compositional fluctuations and short distances between the enriched and depleted regions has been a challenge for quite some time. A wide selection of experimental and modeling tools have been used to quantify these types of structures. These analyses often focus on rather late stages of decomposition where the mechanical properties are already seriously affected. The recent advance in 3D tools like phase-field and atom probe tomography have created a need for good quantitative procedures of evaluating the structure and also to link results from the continuum approach to the individual atom measurements. This work aims at addressing this need.

  • Soil organic carbon stock changes in Swedish forest soils—A comparison of uncertainties and their sources through a national inventory and two simulation models
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ecological Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3800 .- 1872-7026. ; 251, s. 221-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish Forest Soil Inventory (SFSI) estimates of SOC stocks and SOC changes for forest on mineral soils under Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)/lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) or Norway spruce (Picea abies) were compared with estimates, including uncertainties due to parameter, input and climate variability, from two process-based models (Yasso07 and Q) for the period 1994-2000. We found that the stocks, changes, inter-annual variations and uncertainties were of the same magnitude among the different methods. The mean Swedish national stocks in 2000 were estimated to be 73 (+/- 10) (95% CL) ton ha(-1) C (SFSI); 69 (+/- 9) (95% CL) ton ha(-1) C (Yasso07); and, 67 (+10; -9) (5th and 95th percentiles) ton ha(-1) C (Q). Between 1994 and 2000, the mean estimated SOC change were 6.6 (+/- 7)Tg Cyr(-1) (SFSI), 1.7 (+/- 8.8)Tg Cyr(-1) (Yasso07), and -3.2 (+10.5; -16.9)Tg Cyr(-1) (Q). Spatial variability was the main source of uncertainty for the SOC stocks and changes estimated with the SFSI. The uncertainties in the stock estimates originated from litter input for Yasso07 and from the model parameters for the Q model. In both models, litter input uncertainty was the major source of uncertainty for the estimated SOC changes, followed by climate variability and parameters. We concluded that the level of uncertainty for both methods was similar but the sources of uncertainties varied between models and measurements. Thus, comparing uncertainty between methods is difficult and further studies on SOC change estimates with related uncertainties are warranted. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Förvaltning av signalkräfta i sjöar : en litteraturstudie
  • 2013

  • Comparative Study on the Duration and Efficacy of Various Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections for Reducing Masseteric Muscle Bite Force and Treating Facial Wrinkles
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Dermatology and Therapy. - : Adis. - 2193-8210 .- 2190-9172. ; 14, s. 1315-1325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Botulinum toxin serotype A (BoNT/A) is widely used for minimal invasive aesthetic treatments. Different brands of BoNT/A exhibit structural variations. The aim of this study was to compare the duration and efficacy of various BoNT/A brands available in Thailand for reducing bite force and treating wrinkles. Methods: Fifty participants were randomly assigned to one of five groups, with each group receiving a different BoNT/A brand, namely, incobotulinumtoxinA (IncoA), onabotulinumtoxinA (OnaA), abobotulinumtoxinA (AboA), letibotulinumtoxinA (LetiA), and prabotulinumtoxinA (PraboA). BoNT/A was administered to the masseter muscle and the upper face. Bite force was measured before injection and at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 weeks post-injection. Evaluation scores for wrinkle improvement were assessed after the treatment. Results: The most significant reduction in bite force occurred between 2 and 4 weeks post-injection. PraboA demonstrated the most substantial reduction in bite force, while IncoA had the least effect. However, the percentage of bite force reduction did not exhibit statistical significance between BoNT/A types. Additionally, the reduction in bite force for all BoNT/A types was reversed at 4 months post-injection. More than half of the participants experienced improvement beyond 16 weeks. Conclusions: The structural differences among BoNT/A brands did not significantly affect the longevity and efficacy of bite force reduction and wrinkle treatment.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: TCTR20211205001 (registered 4 Dec 2021).

  • Health-related quality of life measured with EQ-5D in patients treated for depression in primary care.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Value in health : the journal of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1098-3015. ; 10:2, s. 153-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to assess the impact of depression on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQL) with the EQ-5D instrument over 6 months while on antidepressant treatment. METHODS: A total of 447 patients were recruited at 56 primary care centers to this naturalistic longitudinal observational study. Patients older than 18 years with depressive symptoms, and who initiated an antidepressant therapy because of depression were included in the study. Data on patients' sociodemographics, daily activity, and quality of life (EQ-5D) were collected using questionnaires completed during outpatient general practitioner visits for a follow-up period of 6 months. RESULTS: The mean EQ-5D utility score at baseline was 0.47 (0.44-0.49). Milder cases of depression reported a health utility of 0.60, whereas moderately and severely depressed patients reported utility values of 0.46 and 0.27, respectively (P < 0.01). At end of follow up the average utility was 0.69 (0.67-0.72), corresponding to an increase of 0.23 over 6 months (P < 0.01). Regression analyses showed that, all else equal, patients who were on sick leave were associated with 10% lower utility. CONCLUSIONS: Depression has a substantial impact on HRQL. Our results indicate that treatments for depression are associated with significant improvement in EQ-5D index score over a course of 6 months. Self-reported patient valuations are important outcomes for cost-utility analysis of new treatments for depression and the present study provides important evidence for future economic evaluations.

  • Model to assess the cost-effectiveness of new treatments for depression.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International journal of technology assessment in health care. - 0266-4623 .- 1471-6348. ; 22:4, s. 469-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop a model to assess the cost-effectiveness of a new treatment for patients with depression. METHODS: A Markov simulation model was constructed to evaluate standard care for depression as performed in clinical practice compared with a new treatment for depression. Costs and effects were estimated for time horizons of 6 months to 5 years. A naturalistic longitudinal observational study provided data on costs, quality of life, and transition probabilities. Data on long-term consequences of depression and mortality risks were collected from the literature. Cost-effectiveness was quantified as quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained from the new treatment compared with standard care, and the societal perspective was taken. Probabilistic analyses were conducted to present the uncertainty in the results, and sensitivity analyses were conducted on key parameters used in the model. RESULTS: Compared with standard care, the new hypothetical therapy was predicted to substantially decrease costs and was also associated with gains in QALYs. With an improved treatment effect of 50 percent on achieving full remission, the net cost savings were 20,000 Swedish kronor over a 5-year follow-up time, given equal costs of treatments. Patients gained .073 QALYs over 5 years. The results are sensitive to changes in assigned treatment effects. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides a new model for assessing the cost-effectiveness of treatments for depression by incorporating full remission as the treatment goal and QALYs as the primary outcome measure. Moreover, we show the usefulness of naturalistic real-life data on costs and quality of life and transition probabilities when modeling the disease over time.

    • The local concentration of atoms in an Fe-46.5 at.% Cr alloy, solution treated at four different temperatures above the miscibility gap, has been investigated using atom probe tomography. It is experimentally found that Cr atoms cluster in the solid solution and that the clustering tendency decreases with increasing temperature above the miscibility gap. These findings are corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations of the atomic short-range order, which show that clustering markedly decrease with increasing temperature from 800 to 1200 degrees C.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 52:1, s. 326-335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spinodal decomposition is a key phase transition in advanced materials and a significant effort is paid to the quantitative modeling of the phenomenon. The initial materials condition is often assumed to be random during modeling, but this may be an oversimplification. In this work, the effect of solution treatment above the miscibility gap, on spinodal decomposition during subsequent aging, has been investigated for an Fe-46.5 at.% Cr alloy. By atom probe tomography (APT), it is found that different extents of quenched-in Cr clustering exist after solution treatments at different temperatures. The clustering is pronounced at 800 °C but decreases significantly with increasing temperature to 900 °C. Thermodynamic Monte Carlo simulations show that there is a difference in atomic short range order between the different solution treatment temperatures. By APT, it is, furthermore, found that the kinetics of spinodal decomposition at 500 °C, i.e., within the miscibility gap, is enhanced in the initial alloy condition, where Cr was less randomly distributed. These observations are supported by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, predicting a similar but less pronounced qualitative effect on spinodal decomposition kinetics. Other possible reasons for the enhanced kinetics could be related to clustering of interstitial elements and/or sigma phase, but neither was found in the experiments. Nonetheless, the observations in this work suggest that it is necessary to implement a modeling strategy, where the initial structure is properly accounted for when simulating spinodal decomposition.

  • Transepidermal water loss in developing rats : Role of aquaporins in the immature skin
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Research. - 0031-3998 .- 1530-0447. ; 53:4, s. 558-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the extremely preterm infant, high transepidermal water loss (TEWL) can result in severe dehydration. TEWL has been attributed to the structural properties of the epidermis but might also be influenced by mechanisms that facilitate water transport. To investigate whether aquaporins (AQP) may be involved in the extreme losses of water through immature skin, we examined the presence and cellular distributions of AQP-1 and AQP-3 in embryonic and adult rat skin by immunohistochemistry. The expression of AQP mRNA in skin was analyzed with the use of semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR. In rat pups of different embryonic (E) and postnatal (P) ages (days), TEWL and skin hydration were measured. AQP-1 was detected in dermal capillaries, and AQP-3 was abundant in basal epidermal layers. Both AQP displayed several times higher expression in embryonic than in adult skin. TEWL was highest at embryonic day 18 (E18) (133 +/- 18 g/m2h) and lower at E20 (25 +/- 1 g/m2h) and P4 (9 +/- 2 g/m2h). Skin hydration measured as skin electrical capacitance paralleled TEWL, being highest in fetal skin (794 +/- 15 pF at E18) and decreasing to 109 +/- 11 pF at E20 and to 0 +/- 0 pF at P4. We conclude that, as in infants, water loss through the skin of rats decreases markedly with maturation during the perinatal period. The expression and cellular localization of the AQP are such that they might influence skin hydration and water transport and contribute to the high losses of water through the immature skin.

  • Duration of bite force reduction following a single injection of botulinum toxin in the masseter muscle bilaterally : a one-year non-randomized trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1365-2842 .- 0305-182X. ; 50:5, s. 343-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous studies concerning the effect of botulinum toxin in masseter muscle have mainly reported effects observed through inspection of facial features or differences in pain levels. One systematic review of studies utilizing objective measurements reported that long-term muscular effect of botulinum neurotoxin injections into masseter muscle was inconclusive. Objective: To evaluate the duration of reduced maximal voluntary bite force (MVBF) after botulinum toxin intervention. Methods: The intervention group was comprised of individuals seeking aesthetic treatment for masseter reduction (n = 20), the reference group (n = 12) comprised of individuals with no intervention. Intervention through 25 units of Xeomin® (Merz Pharma GmbH & Co KGaA, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) botulinum neurotoxin type A injected into the masseter muscles bilaterally (totalling 50 units). A reference group did not receive any intervention. MVBF was measured in Newtons using a strain gauge meter at the incisors and first molars. MVBF was measured at baseline, at 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and after 1 year. Results: Both groups were similar in terms of bite force, sex and age at baseline. MVBF remained similar compared to baseline in the reference group. At 3 months, a significant reduction at all measurement points was observed in the intervention group; at 6 months, this reduction was no longer significant. Conclusion: A single intervention of 50 units of botulinum neurotoxin results in a reversible MVBF reduction of at least 3 months, although a visually discernable reduction may be more long-lasting.

  • In Pursuit of Neo : The Matrix in Contemporary Russian Novels
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Canadian Slavonic Papers. - Edmonton : University of Alberta. - 0008-5006. ; 52:3-4, s. 249-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arguably, few popular films during the last decade have caused so much debate, and been morefrequently quoted as filmThe Matrix (1999), written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski. Thispaper analyzes allusions to the film in four works of contemporary Russian prose fiction. These worksexploit, to various degrees,The Matrix in order to evoke visual representations from the film, and to drawon structural concepts and similarities. Further, I argue that references toThe Matrix are made in order tobenefit from the film’s eclectic mythological concepts and transpose them to the literary realm. This kind ofcross-fertilization could be seen as a growing trend where the borders between different media arebecoming more fluid, and where they benefit from each other, be they novels, films, or computer games.

  • Phantoms of a Future Past : A Study of Contemporary Russian Anti-Utopian Novels
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study the evolution of the Russian anti-utopian literary genre in the new post-Soviet environment in the wake of the defunct Soviet socialist utopia. The genre has gained a renewed importance during the 2000s, and has been used variously as a means of dealing satirically with the Soviet past, of understanding the present, and of pondering possible courses into the future for the Russian Federation. A guiding question in this study is: What makes us recognize a novel as anti-utopian at a time when the idea of utopia may appear obsolete, when the hegemony of nation states has been challenged for several decades, and when art has been drawn towards the aesthetics of hybridity? The main part of the dissertation is comprised of detailed analyses of three novels: The Slynx (Kys', 2001) by Tatyana Tolstaya; Homo Zapiens/Babylon (Generation ‘P’, 1999) by Viktor Pelevin; and Ice Trilogy (Ledianaia Trilogiia, 2002−2005) by Vladimir Sorokin. The further development of the genre is subsequently discussed on the basis of seven novels published in the past decade.A main argument in the dissertation is that the genre has been modified in ways which can be seen as a response to social and political changes on a global scale. The waning power of the nation state, in particular, and its broken monopoly as the bearer of social projects marks a new context, which is not shared by the classic works of the genre. Analysis of this evolution in post-Soviet anti-utopian novels draws on sociological as well as literary studies. The dissertation shows how the analysed novels use the possibilities of the genre to problematize various forms of societal discourse, and how these discourses work as mutations of utopia. Prominent among these are historical discourses, which reflect the increasing importance of historical narratives in public political debates in the Russian Federation.

  • The effect of botulinum toxin injections on bruxism : A systematic review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1365-2842 .- 0305-182X. ; 47:3, s. 395-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Botulinum neurotoxins are produced by the gram-positive anaerobic bacteria Clostridium botulinum, of which several different serotypes have been identified 1,2 . Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BTA) is clinically used the most due to the longer duration of its effect 3,4 and is the focus of this article. One of the first to investigate BTA was Brooks, as he in 1953, showed that when injecting BTA in muscle tissue it inhibited the release of Acetylcholine (ACh) at the neuromuscular junction and rendered motor nerve filaments unexcitable 3 . It has since been shown that BTA inhibits synaptosomal nerve-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), a protein involved in the release of ACh filled vesicles into the synaptic cleft through the assembly of the soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors (SNARE) complex, which is necessary for docking and fusing neurotransmitter vesicles with neuronal membranes.
