  • With a little help from my friends : relational work in leisure-related enterprising
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Sociological Review. - 1467-954X. ; 64:4, s. 748-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article analyses the indistinct boundaries between formal and informal economic exchanges, with a focus on friendship and work relations. To illustrate these intersections, we present a study of Swedish lifestyle entrepreneurs who run small-scale horse-related enterprises. The specific characteristics of this form of business—in which the horse farm owners/operators, customers, employees, and voluntary workers share a leisure interest in horses and participate in the everyday work on the farm—provide the foundation for a work environment where personal favour exchanges and a gift economy are intertwined with a monetary economy. Drawing on Viviana Zelizer’s notion of ‘relational work,’ the present analysis focuses on how relationships, transactions, and forms of repayments are constantly negotiated along a continuum between work-oriented friendship and friendly work relations. The empirical illustrations demonstrate the limitations of the notion of boundary work often employed in studies of relational work—which emphasizes boundary definition. In contrast, it seems that relational work may also involve practices that intentionally maintain indistinct boundaries between different types of relationships, thus sustaining tension between a formal and informal economy.

    • In an evaluation of a juvenile-care project sponsored by the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care, ethnicity was identified as an important factor in treatment, staff practices, and relationships between juveniles. This study examined ethnic monitoring and social control in 15 Swedish juvenile institutions. I analysed notes from interviews and field observations. Discriminatory behaviours and practices were described or made evident by juveniles with non-Swedish ethnicities. In specific examples, a juvenile’s ethnicity was highlighted by drawing attention to the staff’s monitoring and control practices. These examples elucidated the victimhood that non-Swedish juveniles experienced in relation to the staff and/or Swedish juveniles. Thomas Hylland Eriksen (1993) described ethnicity as an ongoing relationship-building process between participants. The present study showed that the ’establishment’ of ethnicity was intimately associated with juvenile descriptions of discrimination and their moral criticism of juvenile care practices. When juveniles of non-Swedish ethnicity described institutional ethnic monitoring and social control, they generally distanced themselves from staff behaviour and portrayed a victim identity. In constructing their identity, juveniles sometimes used their ethnic background rhetorically when describing everyday situations in the institution. The juveniles portrayed a humiliated self through dissociation from the staff and through the perception that they were treated differently than Swedish juveniles.

  • Ingår i: Vårdkedja för ungdomar eller professionella?. - Stockholm : Statens Institutionsstyrelse. ; Forskningsrapport 2009:5, s. 119-153
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to analyze how mothers with children placed in Swedish juvenile homes interpret, define and perceive, on the one hand, the project “Motverka Våld och Gäng” meaning “Counteract Violence and Gangs”, and on the other hand the role of the Coordinators employed in this project. The mothers who were interviewed spoke about some Coordinators that they appreciated. They then paint different pictures of appreciated Coordinators. These includes Coordinators who possess the power to, for example, “check out the Social Service” and Coordinators without power who never-the-less are appreciated. The Coordinators who are described in a positive way are also seen as actors that are dedicated. They often call the mothers, they fight for their children and succeed in making absent fathers more committed. The mothers whose stories contain criticism towards the Coordinators often criticize the other involved actors. The criticism itself isn’t only focused on the Coordinator but rather on the context in which the Coordinator is a part. When the Coordinator is criticized explicitly, the description partly projects the picture of the Coordinator as absent from the care-giving chain.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Vårdkedja för ungdomar eller professionella?. - Stockholm : Statens Institutionsstyrelse. ; Forskningsrapport 2009:5, s. 155-191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to map out and describe the way employees in Swedish juvenile homes interpret, define and perceive, on the one hand, the project “Motverka Våld och Gäng” meaning “Counteract Violence and Gangs”, and on the other hand the role of the Coordinators employed in this project. The role of the Coordinator is formally clear and unproblematic. The project management directives state what the Coordinators should (and should not) do. In the interviews for this survey the starting point is in fact the ambiguousness. The staff at the juvenile homes do not know or feel unsure about the role of the Coordinator and the purpose of the project. For example, they contested the projects name and meant that it did not include the type of problems that many of the projects youths suffered from. When describing the Coordinator and his role he or she is portrayed as discoursively unclear (when it’s percieved as vaguely stated) and organizationally unclear (when they wonder who does what in the care-giving chain). The staff formulate (“draw”) a clearer role for the Coordinators when talking about their own “ordinary” pressing problems, for example the inertia of the Social Service.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Vårdkedja för ungdomar eller professionella?. - Stockholm : Statens Institutionsstyrelse. ; Forskningsrapport 2009:5, s. 193-223
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to analyze how the Social Services personnel interpret, define and perceive, on the one hand, the project “Motverka Våld och Gäng” meaning “Counteract Violence and Gangs”, and on the other hand the role of the Coordinators employed in this project. Heads of units and Social Secretarys were interviewed, as well as observed and recorded at meetings. The personnel of the Social Service often state that the project came “from above”, from the state, and they construct the project as pointing out the Social Service as incompetent of handling juvenile care. Both appreciative as well as criticizing voices were heard about the Coordinators and their role. The criticism deals with the Coordinator portrayed as a controller and competitor when representing the young ones. Positive comments deal with the mediating role of the Coordinator, in contacts with the young one and the parents, as well as their administrative contributions.

  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this dissertation a collaboration project in Swedish youth care is analysed. The aim of the project was to enhance coordination between the Social Services and the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care in order to make the efforts more efficient. The project also employed a number of coordinators. The overall purpose of this dissertation is to analyse conflicts, alliances and comparisons identifiable in interviews and observations. The analytic findings are put into an overall “collaboration context” represented by earlier research on the social phenomenon of “collaboration”. In this way the dissertation tries to contribute to a sociological understanding of a contemporary widespread phenomenon. The empirical materials of the study consist of recorded conversational interviews with 147 project participants (youngsters, parents and various professional categories) as well as observations of meetings, informal get-togethers and visits to institutions, Social Services offices, the head office of the National Board of Institutional Care and coordinators. The material was analysed using the analytic perspectives of Georg Simmel (1950/1964), Theodore Caplow (1968) and Erving Goffman (1959/2004). The analysis shows that the project manifested and led to struggles between organizations involving representatives from the Social Services, the National Board of Institutional Care and the project, as well as to several interpersonal conflicts between representatives from various categories of involved professionals, and the youngsters and their parents. The study also shows that the client, in such human service organizations, faces a significant risk of being marginalized. Professionals who appreciated the collaboration often drew their conclusions based on their interaction with other professionals, but the collaboration did not guarantee a successful treatment of the client. Conflicts concerning the roles of the coordinators and their written documents (“the agreements”) emerged and were actualized through the creation of the project. The coordinators and their “agreements” can be seen as the project’s most visible representatives and symbols, which during the project become both themes for conflict and actualize already established conflict patterns. The youngsters and their parents appreciated the projects’ coordinators who appeared as personally involved and able to make concrete changes. However, many of youngsters and their parents criticized the coordinators and even portrayed a victim identity in relation to the project. The coordinator’s relationship with the youngsters and their parents was mostly characterized by passivity. This is clearly apparent in the analysis of the administrative and/or passive coordinator. Different alliance constellations became visible in these presentations. When the coordinator roles were altered in the description, the alliance constellations change. It is a common strategy for clients in human service organizations to try to enter into alliances with professionals involved in their cases and, in so doing, try to alter the situation to their own advantage. The fact that these alliances are often sought by the client indicates, among other things, the client’s will to fight against the situation in which he/she finds him/herself. I believe that this can be seen as something productive rather than problematic.

  • Ingår i: Vårdkedja för ungdomar eller professionella?. - Stockholm : Statens Institutionsstyrelse. ; Forskningsrapport 2009:5, s. 49-118
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to analyse the way young people who were institutionalised in so called special youth-homes experienced, defined and iterpreted on the one hand the project “Motverka Våld och Gäng” (meaning: “Counteract Violence and Gangs”), and on the other hand the Coordinators employed in this project. There is a big variation in the perception of the coordinators. One common denominator is that the commission of Coordinator and the context in wich the Coordinator acts seems to be flexible enough for one individual to play the role in many different ways. It is only when the specific Coordinator selects an activ, prompt, independent, personal and relatively strong characterization of the role that he or she obtain a chance to have an impact. The personal aspect of the relationship between the young and the Coordinator is depicted as important and it seems as if it plays an important role in the care-giving chain.

  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This report concerns a large evaluation of a project concerning Swedish juvenile care. We analyse how professionals, youngsters and parents perceived and interpreted the three-year project which involved different authorities whose representatives should form a care-giving chain. The project also employed a number of coordinators. Beyond accounting for the results from just over one houndred interviews and an intense field work our ambition was also to place our findings in a greater social and cultural context. The origin of our analysis is based upon the empirical material, not from a before hand constructed perspective; the example of the coordinators’ focus on administrative issues was therefore discovered through interviews and observations and not something that we were looking for or even expecting to find. At the same time no analysis can arise solely from an empirical material. When we, for example, use terms like ‘dispute props’, when talking about the involved actors discussions on different documents, it origins from reading the work of the classic sociologist Georg Simmel and modern social psychologist Ervin Goffman, both using dramaturgy as a metaphor for social interaction. The lasting impression from this project is the administrative position of the involved officials. They were strongly committed to meetings and documents, they reviewed and assessed each other using a bureaucratic language rather than discussing the individual youth with commitment. In fact the youths rather fell into a discursive shaddow when reading the interviews and field observations. In projects like this one, where officials should cooperate, the danger is that the meeting with its attached bureaucracy becomes the goal instead of the means. A more pragmatic stance regarding the meeting would rather see them being means through which distinct decisions and results carried the youth forth in a direction which the group, the parents and the youth had agreed on (the latter categories should, according to directives, be integrated). The meetings we attended rather displayed a startling inertia, issues that could have been resolved between meetings were not. The shortcomings in the measures were not followed up with attribution of responsibility.

  • Ambivalent and Consistent Relationships : The Role of Personal Networks in Cases of Domestic Violence
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-2803. ; 9:4, s. 211-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social networks are usually considered as positive sources of social support, a role which has been extensively studied in the context of domestic violence. To victims of abuse, social networks often provide initial emotional and practical help as well useful information ahead of formal institutions. Recently, however, attention has been paid to the negative responses of social networks. In this article, we advance the theoretical debate on social networks as a source of social support by moving beyond the distinction between positive and negative ties. We do so by proposing the concepts of relational ambivalence and consistency, which describe the interactive processes by which people, intentionally or inadvertently, disregard—or align with—each other’s role‐relational expectations, therefore undermining—or reinforcing—individual’s choices of action. We analyse the qualitative accounts of 19 female victims of domestic violence in Sweden, who described the responses of their personal networks during and after the abuse. We observe how the relationships embedded in these networks were described in ambivalent and consistent terms, and how they played a role in supporting or undermining women in reframing their loving relationships as abusive; in accounting or dismissing perpetrators’ responsibilities for the abuse; in relieving women from role‐expectations and obligations or in burdening them with further responsibilities; and in supporting or challenging their pathways out of domestic abuse. Our analysis suggests that social isolation cannot be considered a simple result of a lack of support but of the complex dynamics in which support is offered and accepted or withdrawn and refused.

  • Ingår i: People, Technology, and Social Organization: Interactionist Studies of Everyday Life. - 9781003277750 - 9781032230689 ; , s. 25-41
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In research on intimate partner violence, most studies focus on those who are abused. In this chapter, we focus on how families, friends, relatives, and employers of abuse victims interact through the use of smartphones, social media platforms, apps, and other internet-connected devices. We discuss how digital technology is integrated into the lives of domestic abuse victims and their social networks: friends, relatives, family, and coworkers. Digital technology has increased the reach of abuse in close relationships, extending the troubles beyond the borders of the couple immediately involved and providing new ways and opportunities for perpetrators to be present even when physically absent.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Criminology. - 2578-983X. ; 21:2, s. 186-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the initial disclosure process when victims of domestic abuse break their silence and tell family, friends, neighbours or colleagues. This study draws on interviews with 21 Swedish women and analyses the interactional and emotional processes of the first disclosure. Shame, perpetrator threats, child custody issues, fear over increased/expanded violence, and how disclosure will affect social interactions were mentioned as reasons for hesitating to reveal the abuse to their social network. Women who had a planned disclosure had decided to tell someone regardless of concerns about potential negative outcomes, referring to the need for emotional and practical support. These women told a person of their choice in a situation they themselves chose. Women also revealed their hidden realities as an unplanned response to a specific situation described as turning points. Unplanned disclosures were also a result of someone in the woman’s network noticing the abuse, more or less forcing the woman to tell. This study reveals the dynamics resulting in the interviewed women’s first disclosure of being abused. We also discuss the nuances in disclosure decisions and offer insight into what is crucial for making domestic abuse visible to others.

  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-2664 .- 1369-1457.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology has become a vital part of people’s lives. Mobile phones, smart phones, social media platforms, apps and other internet-connected devices and software have changed our way of interacting with each other, as well as managing everyday tasks. In this article, the use of such technology is discussed in relation to its integration in the lives of women who are victims of domestic violence. The study is based on interviews with 21 Swedish women, all abused by their former husband or boyfriend. The empirical data demonstrates how technology is used by the perpetrators as a means of coercive control. The analysis shows that the accessibility of digital media enables the abuser to be constantly present in the woman’s life, even after she has left him. However, the same technology is also important to the women, enabling them to manage victimisation, monitor the perpetrators, store evidence, obtain information, gain support and keep in touch with family and friends. This article reveals the use of technology in IPV as a ‘double-edged sword’; providing the capacity to protect and even to use as a ‘counter-strike’ by victims, as well as enhancing perpetrators’ capacity to harm.

  • Ingår i: Sociological perspectives. - Berkeley : University of California Press. - 0731-1214 .- 1533-8673. ; 54:1, s. 103-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern sociological identity analysis argues that people perform a preferred identity, rather than revealing an essential self. But what if a given situation necessitates performance of apparently incompatible identities? Earlier research seems to suggest that people will resist one identity and foreground another. Here, the authors present another strategy of delicately balancing the performance of conflicting identities. Their interviews of Swedish young men who were victims of violence reveal that this identity balance occurs through emphasizing and defending the threatened but seemingly preferred identity, with reference to the other identity in more subtle terms. As they elaborated on their experiences, these men did not reject a victim identity altogether but subtly or implicitly modified it. They discursively positioned themselves as both "masculine men" and "victims," combining seemingly mismatched identities. They achieve the identity work by describing initiative and defense, accounting for non-resistance, and describing injuries, fear, and sympathy from others. © 2011 by Pacific Sociological Association. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on an interview study of how 10 young male crime victims talk about violent events and actors involved. It focuses on how the young men present their identities as ‘young men’ who have been victims of violent crimes. In their narrations the men struggle with a cultural understanding that ‘masculinity’ is associated with strength and power, while ‘victim’ is associated with weakness and impotence. During the interviews the young men actualize several balancing acts in their presentation of themselves as men and victims in a delicate manner by use of specific word choice, manner of speaking, laughter, etc. The young men are negotiating a victim identity; they portray themselves by careful positioning as both victims and strong and active young men. By this discursive balancing of identities the young men can ‘be manly’ at the same time as they present themselves as victims. In collaboration with the interviewer the participants negotiate how they want to be known; as ‘victim worthy’ young men, with associations to a ‘hegemonic manliness’.

  • Burnout among midwives—the factorial structure of the burnout assessment tool and an assessment of burnout levels in a Swedish national sample
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6963. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Many workplaces, within the healthcare sector, experience high rates of mental health problems such as burnout, anxiety, and depression, due to poor psychosocial working conditions and midwives are not an exception. To develop preventive interventions, epidemiologic surveillance of burnout levels, and their relation to professional specific working conditions is needed. Aims of this study is to assess the construct validity of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) in the context of Swedish midwives, to evaluate whether the item responses can be combined into a single score and differential item functioning regarding age. Another aim was to assess the burnout levels of Swedish midwives. Methods: Data come from a national cohort of Swedish midwives (n = 1664). The construct validity was evaluated using Rasch analysis. Burnout levels were presented by median and first (Q1) and third (Q3) quartiles for the BAT total score and the four subscales (exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive and emotional impairment). Results: In the analysis including all 23 items the fit to the Rasch model was not obtained. Items within each subscale clustered together in a residual correlation matrix in a pattern consistent with the underlying conceptualization of the BAT, indicating multidimensionality. The Rasch analysis was re-run using the four testlets as input variables which resulted in a good fit. The median burnout level was 2.0 (Q1 = 1.6, Q3 = 2.4). The four subscales differentiated the picture (elevated levels on exhaustion and low levels on the other three subscales). Conclusions: The construct validity of the BAT for use in the context of Swedish midwives was confirmed. The results indicated a strong general factor, meaning that the responses can be combined into a single burnout score. The scale works invariantly for different age groups. The results of this study secure access to a validated instrument to be used for accurate assessment of the burnout levels among midwives in Sweden.

  • Why Meetings Matter : Everyday Arenas for Making, Performing and Maintaining Organisations
  • 2024
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This innovative book argues that meetings are a crucial feature of modern organisations, demonstrating that, contrary to popular belief, meetings are what define, represent and maintain organisations. Through an in-depth analysis of ethnographic case studies, Patrik Hall, Malin Åkerström and Erika Andersson Cederholm illustrate the inner workings of meetings, exploring phenomena such as meeting chains, meeting escapes, the digitalisation of meetings, subtle meeting diplomacy, and seductive business events. This book emphasises how negotiations, collaborations and power dynamics are performed during meetings, making meetings the most fundamental working map of organisational hierarchies. Ultimately, Why Meetings Matter highlights the crucial importance of meetings in an increasingly collaborative professional working landscape. Offering a cutting-edge approach to a longstanding social phenomenon, this book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers in the fields of sociology, political science and organisation studies. Including ethnographic studies with practical case-based applications, it will appeal in particular to office-based professionals as it provides new insights into a taken-for-granted workplace activity.

  • Interviewees with an agenda – Learning from a 'failed' interview
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1741-3109 .- 1468-7941. ; 13:6, s. 717-734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social constructionists consider interviews as mutually co-constructing meaning. But what if the interlocutors do not seem to agree on what they construct? What if the interviewee has a particularly strong agenda, far from the intended research topic? Are these ‘failed’ interviews? We address this issue using a ‘deviant’ interview in a study of ‘being a neighbour’. First, we add to the discussion of interviewees’ category representativeness by acknowledging a situation when the interviewee insists on representing a category not intended by the researcher. Second, we address the notion of asymmetries of power, where it is often assumed that the interviewer has the upper hand. Through this case, we argue that the opposite may well be true. Finally, we argue that cases where the interviewee pursues a strong agenda may suggest new research areas. After all, strong efforts of resistance may indicate deeper cultural concerns.

  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to give a contribution to the knowledge of why people use violence against each other in public places. In more specific terms the thesis examines mechanisms that generates violent actions by reference to what happens in the situated transaction between the offender and the victim, and to the ways in which the urban environment create opportunities for violent actions. In the thesis I address some overall questions to mark of different dimensions of the studied phenomenon. The questions pay attention to: 1) the relation between the physical and social dimensions of the urban environment and the ways in which the urban environment creates opportunities for violent crimes; 2) why the offenders seek themselves to certain places and the symbolic meaning those places has, and; 3) what happens in the situated transactions between the offender and the victim. My methodological approach is multistrategic. The main components of the approach are qualitative interviews, studies of court orders, statistics and geographical studies. I interviewed respondents that have been punished for different crimes of violence committed in public places in the city centre of Örebro. The interviews were complemented with a case study of court orders over street related crimes of violence committed in the same area, and with a statistic and a geographical analyses over where, when and by whom the crimes were committed. The analyses of the ways in which the urban environment creates opportunities for violent crimes reveals some necessary conditions of physical, social and cultural character, i.e. properties of the urban environment that creates good opportunities for street related violence to occur. I started with a statistical examination of where, when and by whom different crimes of violence were committed. With the empirical regularities as a starting-point I began to analyse the urban environment with the help of Bill Hillier’s (1996) concept of virtual community. The analysis reveals that the city centre context of Örebro offer good opportunities for encounters and movements as it contains of several squares and main passages with an open character and good opportunities for orientation. Thus, the physical design of the city centre form a potential for violence to occur. After that I focused on border controls and the potential for violence they include. The importance of border controls were examined in several ways and it was concluded that the border controls contain different dimensions that contribute to the production of violent actions in different ways. This was followed by an examination of the use of the public spaces from the perspective of territoriality and the potential for violence that territories include. It was concluded that the city centre contains of several territories belonging to different categories, and that a distinction could be made between territories established on spontaneous grounds as well as territories established as a result of the activities that exists in a certain area. The analyses of the situated transactions reveal several mechanisms that contribute to the production of violent actions. The analyses started with a statistical examination of the offenders, the victims and the situations that results in violence. With this as a starting-point I began to examine the situated transactions with reference to what happens in the transactions. I found that different kinds of disturbances constitute the initial cause of the process in which an interaction exceeds to violence. Other important aspects that were revealed were the importance of respect and honour for the production of violence and that a distinction could be made between different kinds of violence depending on how the disturbances are interpreted and what it is directed towards. Furthermore, I examined the importance of emotions and social bonds for the production of violence as well as the ways in which different kinds of strategies of action find expression in the situated transactions in public places. Finally the situated transaction were examined from a ritualistic perspective were I found that different kinds of violations of the ritual objects as well as different dimensions of power and status are important for the understanding of the street related violence.

  • Neglect of elderly women in feminist studies of violence-a case of ageism?
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect. - 0894-6566 .- 1540-4129. ; 16:1, s. 47-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using Sweden as an example, this article describes and analyzes the late and reluctant appearance of a feminist perspective on elder abuse. The lack of interest in elderly women is related both to a youth and mid-life centrist tendency of feminism and to the need for clarity within the feminist perspective. We argue that the appearance of male victims and female offenders in cases of elder abuse threatens feminist models that relate violence to a general subordination of women in society. The feminist perspective that has recently emerged may therefore not only provide new and important understanding about elder abuse. Due to possible anomalies there is a risk that a feminist perspec tive on elder abuse creates a theoretical blindness, where male victims and female abusers are regarded as irrelevant exceptions to the problem. © 2004 by The Haworth Press, Inc. • 2004
  • Ingår i: Sociala problem och socialpolitik i media. - Lund : Studentlitteratur. - 9144032269 ; , s. 93-125

  • Introduction to the Special Issue “Policing Ethnicity: Between the Rhetoric of Inclusion and the Policies and Practices of Exclusion”
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - 2183-2803. ; 2:3, s. 1-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • On the one hand European countries talk the humanitarian and cosmopolitan politics of inclusion of ethnic minorities with a battery of integration policies, on the other hand these same societies practice the policies and practices of exclusion. In this special issue we address this disjuncture and what we refer to as the European moral dilemma, in much the same way that Gunnar Myrdahl, in his influential study from 1944—The American Dilemma—pointed out that the oppression of Black people living in the US was at odds with the country’s moral grounds, its founding creed that all men are created equal and are endowed “with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration of Independence). This special issue does not only include articles from European contexts, however the majority are analyses of European ethnic minority policies and practices. Nonetheless, all of the articles address in different ways how the rhetoric of inclusion is all too often at odds with the practices and policies of exclusion and control. In focus is what we call the policing of ethnicity, that is, the governance of inclusion and exclusion along ethnic lines.

  • Ambivalenta offernarrativ : Unga män, etnicitet och maskulinitet
  • 2021

  • 2006
