  • Joint effect of heat and air pollution on mortality in 620 cities of 36 countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environment International. - : Elsevier. - 0160-4120 .- 1873-6750. ; 181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The epidemiological evidence on the interaction between heat and ambient air pollution on mor-tality is still inconsistent. Objectives: To investigate the interaction between heat and ambient air pollution on daily mortality in a large dataset of 620 cities from 36 countries. Methods: We used daily data on all-cause mortality, air temperature, particulate matter <= 10 mu m (PM10), PM <= 2.5 mu m (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) from 620 cities in 36 countries in the period 1995-2020. We restricted the analysis to the six consecutive warmest months in each city. City-specific data were analysed with over-dispersed Poisson regression models, followed by a multilevel random-effects meta-analysis. The joint association between air temperature and air pollutants was modelled with product terms between non-linear functions for air temperature and linear functions for air pollutants. Results: We analyzed 22,630,598 deaths. An increase in mean temperature from the 75th to the 99th percentile of city-specific distributions was associated with an average 8.9 % (95 % confidence interval: 7.1 %, 10.7 %) mortality increment, ranging between 5.3 % (3.8 %, 6.9 %) and 12.8 % (8.7 %, 17.0 %), when daily PM10 was equal to 10 or 90 mu g/m3, respectively. Corresponding estimates when daily O3 concentrations were 40 or 160 mu g/ m3 were 2.9 % (1.1 %, 4.7 %) and 12.5 % (6.9 %, 18.5 %), respectively. Similarly, a 10 mu g/m3 increment in PM10 was associated with a 0.54 % (0.10 %, 0.98 %) and 1.21 % (0.69 %, 1.72 %) increase in mortality when daily air temperature was set to the 1st and 99th city-specific percentiles, respectively. Corresponding mortality estimate for O3 across these temperature percentiles were 0.00 % (-0.44 %, 0.44 %) and 0.53 % (0.38 %, 0.68 %). Similar effect modification results, although slightly weaker, were found for PM2.5 and NO2. Conclusions: Suggestive evidence of effect modification between air temperature and air pollutants on mortality during the warm period was found in a global dataset of 620 cities.

  • The burden of heat-related mortality attributable to recent human-induced climate change
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Climate Change. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1758-678X .- 1758-6798. ; 11:6, s. 492-500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change affects human health; however, there have been no large-scale, systematic efforts to quantify the heat-related human health impacts that have already occurred due to climate change. Here, we use empirical data from 732 locations in 43 countries to estimate the mortality burdens associated with the additional heat exposure that has resulted from recent human-induced warming, during the period 1991–2018. Across all study countries, we find that 37.0% (range 20.5–76.3%) of warm-season heat-related deaths can be attributed to anthropogenic climate change and that increased mortality is evident on every continent. Burdens varied geographically but were of the order of dozens to hundreds of deaths per year in many locations. Our findings support the urgent need for more ambitious mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize the public health impacts of climate change.

  • Pregnancies, ventricular arrhythmias, and substrate progression in women with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in the Nordic ARVC Registry
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press. - 1099-5129 .- 1532-2092. ; 23:12, s. 1873-1879
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Women with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are at relatively lower risk of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) than men, but the physical burden associated with pregnancy on VA risk remains insufficiently studied. We aimed to assess the risk of VA in relation to pregnancies in women with ARVC.METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 199 females with definite ARVC (n = 121) and mutation-positive family members without ascertained ARVC diagnosis (n = 78), of whom 120 had at least one childbirth. Ventricular arrhythmia-free survival after the latest childbirth was compared between women with one (n = 20), two (n = 67), and three or more (n = 37) childbirths. Cumulative probability of VA for each pregnancy (n = 261) was assessed from conception through 2 years after childbirth and compared between those pregnancies that occurred before (n = 191) or after (n = 19) ARVC diagnosis and in mutation-positive family members (n = 51). The nulliparous women had lower median age at ARVC diagnosis (38 vs. 42 years, P < 0.001) and first VA (22 vs. 41 years, P < 0.001). Ventricular arrhythmia-free survival after the latest childbirth was not related to the number of pregnancies. No pregnancy-related VA was reported among the family members. Women who gave birth after ARVC diagnosis had elevated risk of VA postpartum (hazard ratio 13.74, 95% confidence interval 2.9-63, P = 0.001), though only two events occurred during pregnancies.CONCLUSION: In women with ARVC, pregnancy was uneventful for the overwhelming majority and the number of prior completed pregnancies was not associated with VA risk. Pregnancy-related VA was primarily related to the phenotypical severity rather than pregnancy itself.

  • Performance Characteristics of qPCR Assays Targeting Human- and Ruminant-Associated Bacteroidetes for Microbial Source Tracking across Sixteen Countries on Six Continents
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science & Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 47:15, s. 8548-8556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerous quantitative PCR assays for microbial fecal source tracking (MST) have been developed and evaluated in recent years. Widespread application has been hindered by a lack of knowledge regarding the geographical stability and hence applicability of such methods beyond the regional level. This study assessed the performance of five previously reported quantitative PCR assays targeting human-, cattle-, or ruminant-associated Bacteroidetes populations on 280 human and animal fecal samples from 16 countries across six continents. The tested cattle-associated markers were shown to be ruminant-associated. The quantitative distributions of marker concentrations in target and nontarget samples proved to be essential for the assessment of assay performance and were used to establish a new metric for quantitative source-specificity. In general, this study demonstrates that stable target populations required for marker-based MST occur around the globe. Ruminant-associated marker concentrations were strongly correlated with total intestinal Bacteroidetes populations and with each other, indicating that the detected ruminant-associated populations seem to be part of the intestinal core microbiome of ruminants worldwide. Consequently tested ruminant-targeted assays appear to be suitable quantitative MST tools beyond the regional level while the targeted human-associated populations seem to be less prevalent and stable, suggesting potential for improvements in human-targeted methods.

  • Temperature-related mortality impacts under and beyond Paris Agreement climate change scenarios
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - : Springer. - 0165-0009 .- 1573-1480. ; 150:3-4, s. 391-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Paris Agreement binds all nations to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change, with the commitment to “hold warming well below 2 °C in global mean temperature (GMT), relative to pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5 °C”. The 1.5 °C limit constitutes an ambitious goal for which greater evidence on its benefits for health would help guide policy and potentially increase the motivation for action. Here we contribute to this gap with an assessment on the potential health benefits, in terms of reductions in temperature-related mortality, derived from the compliance to the agreed temperature targets, compared to more extreme warming scenarios. We performed a multi-region analysis in 451 locations in 23 countries with different climate zones, and evaluated changes in heat and cold-related mortality under scenarios consistent with the Paris Agreement targets (1.5 and 2 °C) and more extreme GMT increases (3 and 4 °C), and under the assumption of no changes in demographic distribution and vulnerability. Our results suggest that limiting warming below 2 °C could prevent large increases in temperature-related mortality in most regions worldwide. The comparison between 1.5 and 2 °C is more complex and characterized by higher uncertainty, with geographical differences that indicate potential benefits limited to areas located in warmer climates, where direct climate change impacts will be more discernible.

  • Genetic profiling of a chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma/malignant phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor of bone reveals a homozygous deletion of CDKN2A, intragenic deletion of DMD, and a targetable FN1-FGFR1 gene fusion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Genes, Chromosomes and Cancer. - : Wiley. - 1045-2257 .- 1098-2264. ; 58:10, s. 731-736
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conventional osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of bone. This group of neoplasms is subclassified according to specific histological features, but hitherto there has been no correlation between subtype, treatment, and prognosis. By in-depth genetic analyses of a chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma, we detect a genetic profile that is distinct from those previously reported in benign and malignant bone tumors. The overall genomic copy number profile was less complex than that typically associated with conventional osteosarcoma, and there was no activating point mutation in any of H3F3A, H3F3B, IDH1, IDH2, BRAF, or GNAS. Instead, we found a homozygous CDKN2A deletion, a DMD microdeletion and an FN1-FGFR1 gene fusion. The latter alteration has been described in phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor. This tumor type shares some morphological features with chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma and we cannot rule out that the present case actually represents an FN1-FGFR1 positive malignant phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor of bone without osteomalacia.

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. - 1939-3539. ; 24:9, s. 1215-1225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factorization algorithms for recovering structure and motion from an image stream have many advantages, but they usually require a set of well-tracked features. Such a set is in generally not available in practical applications. There is thus a need for making factorization algorithms deal effectively with errors in the tracked features. We propose a new and computationally efficient algorithm for applying an arbitrary errorfunction in the factorization scheme. This algorithm enables the use of robust statistical techniques and arbitrary noise models for the individual features. These techniques and models enable the factorization scheme to deal effectively with mismatched features, missing features, and noise on the individual features. The proposed approach further includes a new method for Euclidean reconstruction that significantly improves convergence of the factorization algorithms. The proposed algorithm has been implemented as a modification of the Christy-Horaud factorization scheme, which yields a perspective reconstruction. Based on this implementation, a considerable increase in error tolerance is demonstrated on real and synthetic data. The proposed scheme can, however, be applied to most other factorization algorithms.

  • Evolution of P-wave indices during long-term follow-up as markers of atrial substrate progression in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press. - 1099-5129 .- 1532-2092. ; 23:Supplement_1, s. i29-i37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) have increased prevalence of atrial arrhythmias indicating atrial involvement in the disease. We aimed to assess the long-term evolution of P-wave indices as electrocardiographic (ECG) markers of atrial substrate during ARVC progression.METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 100 patients with a definite ARVC diagnosis according to 2010 Task Force criteria [34% females, median age 41 (inter-quartile range 30-55) years]. All available sinus rhythm ECGs (n = 1504) were extracted from the regional electronic ECG databases and automatically processed using Glasgow algorithm. P-wave duration, P-wave area, P-wave frontal axis, and prevalence of abnormal P terminal force in lead V1 (aPTF-V1) were assessed and compared at ARVC diagnosis, 10 years before and up to 15 years after diagnosis.Prior to ARVC diagnosis, none of the P-wave indices differed significantly from the data at ARVC diagnosis. After ascertainment of ARVC diagnosis, P-wave area in lead V1 decreased from -1 to -30 µV ms at 5 years (P = 0.002). P-wave area in lead V2 decreased from 82 µV ms at ARVC diagnosis to 42 µV ms 10 years after ARVC diagnosis (P = 0.006). The prevalence of aPTF-V1 increased from 5% at ARVC diagnosis to 18% by the 15th year of follow-up (P = 0.004). P-wave duration and frontal axis did not change during disease progression.CONCLUSION: Initial ARVC progression was associated with P-wave flattening in right precordial leads and in later disease stages an increased prevalence of aPTF-V1 was seen.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Second Conference on High Performance Yacht Design. - 9781622761852
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A comparison in total life cycle costs and energy consumption for one high speed ship design with three different structural materials have been performed. The investigation considers a high speed ferry with a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, an all aluminium concept and a ship built in sandwich material with carbon fibre faces. The different materials will affect several cost elements during the design, the production and the operation of the ship until and including its disposal. Furthermore, the material selection has an impact on the energy consumption within all stages of the ships life cycle. The assessment is made in a comparative manner. Hence, identical out fitting components, e.g. interior, instrumentation, and ventilation are left out. It is shown that the steel version causes the highest costs and energy consumption. The sandwich construction has the lowest life cycle costs while the aluminium version has the lowest energy consumption. The break-even point between the steel and the composite versions appears after 4 years (only 2 years of operation!), the break-even point between the aluminium and the composite ferry is after 12 years (10 years of operation). A sensitivity analysis with different possible scenarios, e.g. change in interest, petrol cost, maintenance cost, has been performed. All of the investigated scenarios identify the composite version to have the lowest life cycle costs. This paper summarises an original work carried out as a master of science work as given in [1-2].

  • Quantifying shedding of synthetic fibers from textiles; a source of microplastics released into the environment
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Pollution Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0944-1344 .- 1614-7499. ; 25:2, s. 1191-1199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microplastics in the environment are a subject of intense research as they pose a potential threat to marine organisms. Plastic fibers from textiles have been indicated as a major source of this type of contaminant, entering the oceans via wastewater and diverse non-point sources. Their presence is also documented in terrestrial samples. In this study, the amount of microfibers shedding from synthetic textiles was measured for three materials (acrylic, nylon, polyester), knit using different gauges and techniques. All textiles were found to shed, but polyester fleece fabrics shed the greatest amounts, averaging 7360 fibers/m(-2)/L-1 in one wash, compared with polyester fabrics which shed 87 fibers/m(-2)/L-1. We found that loose textile constructions shed more, as did worn fabrics, and high twist yarns are to be preferred for shed reduction. Since fiber from clothing is a potentially important source of microplastics, we suggest that smarter textile construction, prewashing and vacuum exhaustion at production sites, and use of more efficient filters in household washing machines could help mitigate this problem.

  • Estimates of Temporal Edge Detection Filters in Human Vision
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Applied Perception. - 1544-3558. ; 21:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Edge detection is an important process in human visual processing. However, as far as we know, few attempts have been made to map the temporal edge detection filters in human vision. To that end, we devised a user study and collected data from which we derived estimates of human temporal edge detection filters based on three different models, including the derivative of the infinite symmetric exponential function and temporal contrast sensitivity function. We analyze our findings using several different methods, including extending the filter to higher frequencies than were shown during the experiment. In addition, we show a proof of concept that our filter may be used in spatiotemporal image quality metrics by incorporating it into a flicker detection pipeline.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 13th Scandinavian Conference, SCIA 2003 Halmstad, Sweden, June 29 – July 2, 2003 Proceedings/Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783540406013 ; 2749, s. 415-421
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to develop a new completely automated method for the interpretation of ventilation-perfusion (V-P) lung scintigrams for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. A new way of extracting features, characteristic for pulmonary embolism is presented. These features are then used as input to a Support Vector Machine, which discriminates between pulmonary embolism or no embolism. Using a material of 509 training cases and 104 test cases, the performance of the system, measured as the area under the ROC curve, was 0.86 in the test group. It is concluded that a completely automatic method can be used for interpretation of V-P scintigrams. It is faster and more robust than a previously presented method [4,5] and the accuracy is at the same level as the the previous method. It also handles abnormalities in the lungs.

  • Ingår i: Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-1699 .- 1872-7107. ; 127, s. 506-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A well-planned waiting area is crucial for automatic milking systems. In an enclosed waiting area, cows of different rank compete for entering the milking station and they are exposed for a variety of social interactions. Such interactions could increase standing time and delay milking, which may result in stress, lameness, impaired welfare and reduced performance. The aim was to monitor the waiting area in a free stall dairy by the use of three video cameras to detect occurrence of social interactions by using improved image segmentation and tracking methods. The surveillance system observed 252 cows having free access to any of four milking stations during 24 h over a period of two weeks. A two-step pattern recognition approach was used. In the first step geometric features (distances) were extracted from every pair of cows in every frame. These features form the input of the second step. It consists of a classifier of the behaviour of the cows. A support vector machine was used to realise this classifier. The social interactions were identified based on collision of geometrical shapes segmented from the image and positively identified as cows by experienced observers. The results showed that the proposed system was capable of a fairly accurate detection of social interactions.

  • Black carbon — Possibilities to reduce emissions and potential effects
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present report emerge from the Swedish EPA project ?Black carbon — possibilities to reduce emissions and potential effects? to obtain an overall assessment of the opportunities and costs for reducing emissions of "soot" (black carbon - BC) in Sweden and its effects on health, ecosystems and climate. The basic analytical methods and techniques are described and reviewed. Existing and upcoming standards are described. The national BC emission inventory has been evaluated through a thorough basic review of the underlying data and processes as well as comparison with other inventories. The report identifies scientific and technological needs (such as methods for emission estimates and emission measurement) needed to implement mitigation measures and assess its impact. The following major conclusions emerge from this report concerning BC and Organic Carbon (OC);Standardized sampling, measurement and analytic methods for BC and OC are underway. Some major networks have already developed standardized methods giving high quality data. A more general standardization will ensure comparability between networks. So future measurements will have less uncertainty and data should be comparable. However this also means that historic data always shall be used with caution. The total BC and OC emissions reported by different inventories agree fairly well, e.g. results from the GAINS scenario estimates and national inventory agree within 30 — 40 % but estimates of major source types can differ with more than a factor 2. This must be investigated as such errors can affect the mitigation policy. Investigations have been started. There is a great need for national projections for 2020 and 2030 for BC but also the other related climate forcing air pollutants.Other climate forcing air pollutants are besides BC and other particle components and ozone. Besides that they affect climate they have a short life time in the atmosphere, thus called Short Lived Climate Forcing compounds (SLCF). Included in the SLCFs are also methane as it affects ozone chemistry even though it has an intermediate atmospheric life time. Inventories and projections on national policy implementation plans have to be developed keeping in mind that climate and health effects depend not on one component only, e.g. soot but rather a mix of different components. The climate effects can be best reduced by a decrease of CO2 and SLCF, while health effects can be reduced by reduced emissions of particles and ozone precursors. The inventories thus have to include the emissions of all these components for all available reduction technologies to facilitate the development of the best abatement strategy. The analysis shows that all techniques involving combustion should be reviewed concerning emissions of all mentioned components. It is clearly shown that regulation of SLCF can give co-beneficial effects on climate, health and ecosystem. However it cannot replace the abatement of long-lived climate forcers but rather increase the climate response to the abatements. The reductions needed for 2050 and beyond have to be large. Combustion is the basic process in the major common sources 6 for CO2, O3-precursors and particles including BC. Combustion has to be questioned as a part of future sustainable transport systems, energy and heat production. The Swedish abatement costs for different SLCF abatement options varied strongly, in the hypothetical scenarios. However the same abatement options show up as the most cost effective in all scenarios. The three most cost effective options covered about 30% of the present emissions. The most cost effective measures found, e.g. decreasing BC emissions from power production and renewing of domestic fuel wood boilers, are found to be in the same range as CO2 ETS price projected for Sweden in 2020. The cost estimates were in line with other studies. Still, the measures studied represent only a very small fraction of all options available to reduce BC emissions. The cost effectiveness of more alternatives in both the mobile and stationary sectors should be assessed. Fuel efficiency improvements, fuel shifts, as well as scrapping schemes are all potentially interesting options. In conclusion, the options analyzed in this study are found to be effective complements, both from health and climate point of view.

  • Ambient Particulate Air Pollution and Daily Mortality in 652 Cities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - Waltham : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 381:8, s. 705-715
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The systematic evaluation of the results of time-series studies of air pollution is challenged by differences in model specification and publication bias.METHODS: We evaluated the associations of inhalable particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 μm or less (PM10) and fine PM with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) with daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality across multiple countries or regions. Daily data on mortality and air pollution were collected from 652 cities in 24 countries or regions. We used overdispersed generalized additive models with random-effects meta-analysis to investigate the associations. Two-pollutant models were fitted to test the robustness of the associations. Concentration-response curves from each city were pooled to allow global estimates to be derived.RESULTS: On average, an increase of 10 μg per cubic meter in the 2-day moving average of PM10 concentration, which represents the average over the current and previous day, was associated with increases of 0.44% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.39 to 0.50) in daily all-cause mortality, 0.36% (95% CI, 0.30 to 0.43) in daily cardiovascular mortality, and 0.47% (95% CI, 0.35 to 0.58) in daily respiratory mortality. The corresponding increases in daily mortality for the same change in PM2.5 concentration were 0.68% (95% CI, 0.59 to 0.77), 0.55% (95% CI, 0.45 to 0.66), and 0.74% (95% CI, 0.53 to 0.95). These associations remained significant after adjustment for gaseous pollutants. Associations were stronger in locations with lower annual mean PM concentrations and higher annual mean temperatures. The pooled concentration-response curves showed a consistent increase in daily mortality with increasing PM concentration, with steeper slopes at lower PM concentrations.CONCLUSIONS: Our data show independent associations between short-term exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 and daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality in more than 600 cities across the globe. These data reinforce the evidence of a link between mortality and PM concentration established in regional and local studies. (Funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and others.).

    • Experimental investigations have been made using an apparatus specially built to study lubrication combined squeezing and sliding. In this investigation nine different lubricating greases and two base oils have been tested. The results are presented as a critical sliding velocity above which asperity contact occurs. The squeeze (normal) velocity was 0.2 m/s and the critical sliding velocity was between 1 and 6 m/s depending on the lubrican Although the greases have the same NLGI grade (2), they show quite different lubricating ability. The experiment showed that the lithium and lithium complex thickeners increased the lubrication ability of the base oil.

    • Clinical burnout has been associated with impaired cognitive functioning; however, inconsistent findings have been reported regarding the pattern and magnitude of cognitive deficits. The aim of this systematic review and multivariate meta-analysis was to assess cognitive function in clinical burnout as compared to healthy controls and identify the pattern and severity of cognitive dysfunction across cognitive domains. We identified 17 studies encompassing 730 patients with clinical burnout and 649 healthy controls. Clinical burnout was associated with impaired performance in episodic memory (g = −0.36, 95% CI −0.57 to −0.15), short-term and working memory (g = −0.36, 95% CI −0.52 to −0.20), executive function (g = −0.39, 95% CI −0.55 to −0.23), attention and processing speed (g = −0.43, 95% CI −0.57 to −0.29) and fluency (g = −0.53, 95% CI −1.04 to −0.03). There were no differences between patients and controls in crystallized (k = 6 studies) and visuospatial abilities (k = 4). Our findings suggest that clinical burnout is associated with cognitive impairment across multiple cognitive domains. Cognitive dysfunction needs to be considered in the clinical and occupational health management of burnout to optimise rehabilitation and support return-to-work.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increased use of synthetic chemicals in society poses possible harmful risks for the environment and human health. There are difficulties in predicting and evaluating consequences and effects of long-time exposure of different chemicals. Biomonitoring is one way to observe the level of exposure in the human population.Agricultural pesticides are a widely used group of chemicals to which we are mainly exposed by occupation or by diet. Long-term exposure to pesticides might have a negative impact on human health, especially in children and foetuses, due to genotoxic, neurotoxic and endocrine disrupting characteristics of many pesticides. This study focuses on the exposure assessment of 14 different metabolites from about 20 pesticides in urinary samples. The pesticides and their biomarkers of exposure included in the analysis were the fungicides thiabendazole (OH-T), pyrimetanil (OH-P), tebuconazole (TEB-OH), mancozeb and several ethylenebisdithiocarbamates (ETU), propineb (PTU), the insecticides chlorpyrifos (TCP), some pyrethroid insecticides, which have the same corresponding biomarkers (3-PBA, DCCA), and some specific pyrethroid biomarkers (4F-3-PBA, CFCA), the herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) and the growth regulators chlormequat (CCC) and mepiquat (MQ). The samples were collected years 2000, 2004, 2009 and 2013 from young men in the enrolment for military service in the south of Sweden. The last year of measurement (2013) both young men and women in upper secondary school were included. All samples were analysed in 2016 with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The emphasis of the statistical analysis was temporal trends between the years 2000 and 2013.The highest concentrations were found for TCP and CCC in all samples from all four years. In general, the concentrations were below the levels seen in previous studies of other Swedish populations. The only increasing trend near significance was that for TCP, although the increasing gradient was fairly low ( = 0,28). The concentrations of CCC decreased over the years, but not statistically significantly so. The biomarkers 3-PBA, 2,4-D, DCCA and MQ were detected above the limit of detection (LOD), but in fairly low concentrations in the majority of samples and without significant trends. The remaining residues were mainly below the LOD and could not be further statistically analysed.

  • Impact of national holidays and weekends on incidence of acute type A aortic dissection repair
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have demonstrated that environmental and temporal factors may affect the incidence of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Here, we aimed to investigate the hypothesis that national holidays and weekends influence the incidence of surgery for ATAAD. For the period 1st of January 2005 until 31st of December 2019, we investigated a hypothesised effect of (country-specific) national holidays and weekends on the frequency of 2995 surgical repairs for ATAAD at 10 Nordic cities included in the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD) collaboration. Compared to other days, the number of ATAAD repairs were 29% (RR 0.71; 95% CI 0.54–0.94) lower on national holidays and 26% (RR 0.74; 95% CI 0.68–0.82) lower on weekends. As day of week patterns of symptom duration were assessed and the primary analyses were adjusted for period of year, our findings suggest that the reduced surgical incidence on national holidays and weekends does not seem to correspond to seasonal effects or surgery being delayed and performed on regular working days.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to investigate a hypothesised association between daily mean temperature and the risk of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). For the period of 1 January 2005 until 31 December 2019, we collected daily data on mean temperatures and date of 2995 operations for ATAAD at 10 Nordic cities included in the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD) collaboration. Using a two-stage time-series approach, we investigated the association between hot and cold temperatures relative to the optimal temperature and the rate of ATAAD repair in the selected cities. The relative risks (RRs) of cold temperatures (<=-5 degrees C) and hot temperatures (>= 21 degrees C) compared to optimal temperature were 1.47 (95% CI: 0.72-2.99) and 1.43 (95% CI: 0.67-3.08), respectively. In line with previous studies, we observed increased risk at cold and hot temperatures. However, the observed associations were not statistically significant, thus only providing weak evidence of an association.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Standard TDOA (time-difference of arrival) estimation techniques are modified and applied to locate networked enemy radars using a cooperative team of unmanned electronic combat air vehicles (ECAVs). The team is engaged in deceiving the radars, which limits where the ECAVs can fly and requires accurate radar positions to be known. Two TDOA measurements of radar pulses taken by two ECAV pairs are used to estimate the position of the middle radar. A nonlinear system model for estimation is formulated and used to perform simulations with "noisy" TDOAs; a linearized time-varying model for straight nominal ECAV trajectories is derived from the nonlinear model. The choice of optimal ECAV trajectories and an observer to minimize the variance of the middle radar position - using the linearized model is addressed. Application of a time-varying Kalman filter to the linearized system shows drastic improvement in reducing the variance of position estimates when compared to the original nonlinear system via simulations.

  • Ankyrin-B dysfunction predisposes to arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy and is amenable to therapy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Investigation. - : AMER SOC CLINICAL INVESTIGATION INC. - 0021-9738 .- 1558-8238. ; 129:8, s. 3171-3184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited arrhythmia syndrome characterized by severe structural and electrical cardiac phenotypes, including myocardial fibrofatty replacement and sudden cardiac death. Clinical management of ACM is largely palliative, owing to an absence of therapies that target its underlying pathophysiology, which stems partially from our limited insight into the condition. Following identification of deceased ACM probands possessing ANK2 rare variants and evidence of ankyrin-B loss of function on cardiac tissue analysis, an ANK2 mouse model was found to develop dramatic structural abnormalities reflective of human ACM, including biventricular dilation, reduced ejection fraction, cardiac fibrosis, and premature death. Desmosomal structure and function appeared preserved in diseased human and murine specimens in the presence of markedly abnormal beta-catenin expression and patterning, leading to identification of a previously unknown interaction between ankyrin-B and beta-catenin. A pharmacological activator of the WNT/beta-catenin pathway, SB-216763, successfully prevented and partially reversed the murine ACM phenotypes. Our findings introduce what we believe to be a new pathway for ACM, a role of ankyrin-B in cardiac structure and signaling, a molecular link between ankyrin-B and beta-catenin, and evidence for targeted activation of the WNT/beta-catenin pathway as a potential treatment for this disease.

  • Absence of ECG task force criteria does not rule out structural changes in genotype positive ARVC patients
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - : Elsevier. - 0167-5273 .- 1874-1754. ; 317, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: In Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), electrophysiological pathology has been claimed to precede morphological and functional pathology. Accordingly, an ECG without ARVC markers should be rare in ARVC patients with pathology identified by cardiac imaging. We quantified the prevalence of ARVC patients with evidence of structural disease, yet without ECG Task Force Criteria (TFC).METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 182 probands and family members with ARVC-associated mutations (40 ± 17 years, 50% women, 73% PKP2 mutations) from the Nordic ARVC Registry in a cross-sectional analysis. For echocardiography and cardiac MR (CMR), we differentiated between "abnormalities" and TFC. "Abnormalities" were defined as RV functional or structural measures outside TFC reference values, without combinations required to fulfill TFC. ECG TFC were used as defined, as these are not composite parameters. We found that only 4% of patients with ARVC fulfilled echocardiographic TFC without any ECG TFC. However, importantly, 38% of patients had imaging abnormalities without any ECG TFC. These results were supported by CMR data from a subset of 51 patients: 16% fulfilled CMR TFC without fulfilling ECG TFC, while 24% had CMR abnormalities without any ECG TFC. In a multivariate analysis, echocardiographic TFC were associated with arrhythmic events.CONCLUSION: More than one third of ARVC genotype positive patients had subtle imaging abnormalities without fulfilling ECG TFC. Although most patients will have both imaging and ECG abnormalities, structural abnormalities in ARVC genotype positive patients cannot be ruled out by the absence of ECG TFC.

  • The effect of interparticle contact area on the strength of cold-pressed aluminium powder compacts
  • 1973
  • Ingår i: Powder Metallurgy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0032-5899 .- 1743-2901. ; 16:32, s. 155-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of the tensile strength of spherical cold-pressed aluminium powder, pressed to various densities up to the theoretical maximum, have shown that compaction is a two-stage process. At some high, intermediate pressure, interparticle sliding occurs in a way that does not itself increase densification but makes it easier for further deformation to occur. It is likely that the pressure at which this sliding takes place is dependent on the work-hardening rate of the powder as well as the powder size and morphology. In any case, it is shown to be important to the densification and strength reached by the compact. It is concluded that the strength of a green compact is dependent upon the interparticle metallic contacts made during compaction. However, the green strength is well below that of wrought aluminium, probably due to the presence of broken-up oxides, which act as stress-concentrators at the interparticle boundaries.

  • A Nonlinear PID Autotuning Algorithm
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1986 American Control Conference : Seattle Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Seattle, WA, June 18-20, 1986 - Seattle Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Seattle, WA, June 18-20, 1986. ; , s. 2118-2123
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A nonlinear autotuning regulator algorithm is obtained via a direct combination of the Åström-Hägglund algorithm for the linear case [1] with the sinusoidal-input describing function (SIDEF) approach to nonlinear compensator synthesis of Taylor and Strobel [2]. The basic approach for linear autotuning proceeds as follows: a. install a relay with hysteresis in series with the unknown plant to be controlled; close a unitygain feedback loop around this combination; b. choose several values of hysteresis so that this system exhibits limit cycles; the frequencies and amplitudes of the oscillation at the output of the plant determine points on the plant Nyquist plot; and c. given points on the plant Nyquist plot, set the PID controller gains using an appropriate tuning algorithm (e.g., Ziegler-Nichols). This approach produces good results if the plant is liner or nearly so; however, if the plant behavior is strongly amplitude-dependent, there are likely to be problems with implementing this algorithm. The nonlinear autotuning regulator algorithm which extends the above approach to handle situations where the plant behavior is strongly amplitude-dependent is based on the SIDF approach. In essence, SIDF input/output (I/O) models of the compensated nonlinear system are exploited to directly synthesize a compensator nonlinearity that eliminates or reduces the amplitude dependence of the open-loop I/O relation. The nonlinear synthesis portion of this algorithm is reasonably simple to implement, has been shown to be effective [2], and should be of practical utility. An example application to a precision position control system is provided as an illustration.

  • A re-assessment of metal pollution in the Dexing mining area in Jiangxi province, China : current status, hydro-geochemical controls, and effectiveness of remediation practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology. - : Springer Nature. - 1735-1472 .- 1735-2630. ; 19, s. 10707-10722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study re-assess the environmental impacts of the Dexing copper mine (the largest open-pit copper mine in Asia) on the Lean river and its two tributaries (the Dawu river and Jishui river) in the Jiangxi province, China, with particular focus on metal pollution as well as the effectiveness and side-effects of remediation activities. Results show that the Dawu river and its mixing zone with the Lean river were still heavily influenced by acid mine drainage (AMD) and loaded with elevated levels of metals, in particular Mn, Ni, and Al whose concentrations were frequently above the health-based guideline values. Manganese and Ni in the AMD-impacted waters were predicted to occur as free ions or sulfate and carbonate complexes, and thus highly-toxic to living organisms. Although Al in the AMD-impacted waters was predicted to exist largely as colloidal hydroxides with low bioavailability, abundant formation of such nano-sized particles could impair the respiratory and circulatory systems of aquatic macro-invertebrates. The integration and comparison of the results from the current and previous studies show that the concentrations of several metals (Cu, Zn, and Cd) in the Dawu river decreased significantly after 2011-2012, during which several remediation practices were implemented (e.g., AMD neutralization, excavation of contaminated sediments in impounded rivers, and rehabilitation of mine tailings and open-pit slopes). This provides evidence that these remediation practices have effectively limited the dispersion of metals from the mining area. However, AMD neutralization greatly enhanced the release of sulfate, making the mining area an even more important sulfate source.

  • Hot cracking and micro-segregation in 18-1 0 stainless steel welds
  • 1976
  • Ingår i: Metal Science. - : Maney Publishing. - 0306-3453. ; 10:7, s. 225-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advanced quantitative chemical and image analysis techniques based on scanning and scanning-transmission electron miCroscopy have been used to study hot cracking and micro-segregation in an 18%Cr-10%Ni weld metal. It is found that the main cause of hot cracking is sulphur segregation. In fully austenitic welds, manganese remains in solution and when the last of the S-rich 'melt solidifies Mn is simply not available to break up the sulphide films. The present practice of substantially increasing the amount of Mn in austenitic welds, or adding cerium, would thus seem to be justified. Phosphorus also aggravates the problem of hot cracking, but fortunately it does not appear to segregate so markedly as sulphur, being much more soluble in austenite. If the weld metal is so alloyed that solidification to the two-phase austenite plus ferrite occurs, hot cracking does not occur. The two main reasons are concluded to be: (1) manganese is less soluble in ferrite than austenite and a sufficient quantity of Mn is evidently released to combine with S and form inclusions; (2) the structural refinement of two-phase structures, compared to the single-phase austenite, results in a more even distribution of Sand P throughout the weld metal, and marked segregation is thus avoided.
