  • ErgoVSM: A Tool for Integrating Value Stream Mapping and Ergonomics in Manufacturing
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 26:2, s. 191-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean tool aiming at waste reduction. Previous research suggests that the use of VSM may result in work intensification and thus an increased risk for the workers of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). In the current study, VSM was developed to also consider physical exposure in the analyzed production system (ErgoVSM). As the VSM, ErgoVSM is based on a participatory approach. ErgoVSM was tested in a Swedish manufacturing company. The results suggest that ErgoVSM catalyzes change processes to include intervention proposals emphasizing ergonomics in addition to waste reduction. Thus, ErgoVSM appeared useful for the investigated target group of production engineers and experienced operators. The performance improvements suggested when using the ordinary VSM seemed not to be hampered by adding the ergonomics complement. However, the use of ErgoVSM was somewhat more time-consuming than the use of VSM. In conclusion, ErgoVSM is suggested as a feasible tool to be used by production engineers and experienced operators for including ergonomics considerations in the rationalization process.

  • Influences of process location on materials handling: cases from the automotive industry
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 3:1, s. 25-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last few years there has been a change in the physical location of activity in the automotive industry. The main trend has been towards increased outsourcing, and larger modules and more complex components are being delivered to the final-assembly plants, often in sequence. Sequencing, kitting and subassembly are frequently done at the supplier location or at an additional, intermediate facility. The need for materials handling is related to the design of materials flow systems in relation to process localisation. Five cases, having different numbers of process localisations and types of activities, are compared based on actual efficiency and potential of the system design. The results indicate that there is a large difference in the efficiency of the materials handling function depending on the existence of an intermediate facility, primarily connected to the handling of transport packages. No clear difference can be detected in relation to what types of sub-processes are located at an existing intermediate facility.

  • Materials handling analysis in supply chain reengineering
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Logistics ∼ Enhancing Competitiveness through Logistics Capabilities. (Eds. M. Muffatto and Pawar, K.S.), Padua.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • eengineering capability and tools are important in relation to the demands on the supply chains of today and require an understanding of the current structure and activities, including their function in relation to the overall objective of the system. The physical flow is an essential part of the supply chain, including all materials handling activities taking place at different locations in the system. A principal result of the engineering effort is an efficient physical flow. A physical flow that creates conditions for short throughput times, low resource consumption and low risk of goods damage is necessary in order to have an efficient supply chain. These conditions are to a large extent determined by the organization and operation of the materials handling activities. In this paper, a stepwise analysis is outlined considering causes of materials handling activities and the restrictions in eliminating or avoiding them. A detailed description of a case study where the introduced analysis is applied is presented. The results indicate that the analysis is effective not only in identifying and structuring the causes of materials handling but also in identifying alternative designs of the supply chain that improve the effectiveness of the materials handling.

  • Materials Handling from a Value-Adding Perspective
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The keen competition in industry puts a great deal of pressure upon all parts involved, and in addition to demands on the physical product, there are demands on the service aspects, such as an increased demand on the configuration of the delivered materials and their packaging, on throughput time, timeliness, and increased cost efficiency. The performance of the materials flow systems, in which materials handling constitutes an important part, therefore plays a crucial part in the strive for competitive advantage. The materials handling function contributes to the adding of value when, for example, mixing articles, packaging them as demanded by the customer, or orienting and positioning them for a later process step, as well as influences cost efficiency and throughput time. This thesis deals with the relation between the resources required for the materials handling function and the design of materials flow systems and is directed towards the development of a method for evaluation and improvement of materials flow systems regarding the performance of the materials handling function. The development of a conceptual framework for the perspective of materials handling as contributing to the value added in materials flow systems is included as an important basis. An improved understanding of the purpose of the materials handling function, as well as principles and procedures for how to utilise this knowledge to evaluate and improve the performance in terms of efficiency, is provided. The research was directed towards theory building, and a primarily inductive approach has been adopted, where the empirical data was gathered in ten case studies mainly within the manufacturing industry and warehousing. A method was developed which makes it possible to estimate, in an early design stage, the efficiency of the materials handling function, and to identify where along materials flows that changes in the materials flow system design would give prerequisites for improvements. Further, the efficiency measurement has been utilised in a study aiming at relating the efficiency of the materials handling function to the process localisation in the context of the automotive industry and outsourcing. Additionally, the thesis includes a method for simultaneous evaluation of the materials handling efficiency and the physical work load generated in a materials flow system, the Work-Load Dose method.

  • Packaging as a Carrier of Materials Flow Effectiveness.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Selected proceedings of the 7th World Conference on Transport Research, Vol. 4. (Eds. D. Hensher, King, J. Oum, T.), pp. 57-71. Oxford: Pergamon..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a methodology for evaluation and improvement of materials flow systems. The aim is to integrate subprocesses, for instance through packaging design, in order to eliminate materials handling activities not adding product value from the logistic point of view, and thereby increase the effectiveness of the system.
