  • Research Collaboration between Stockholm University and other Swedish Academic Institutions : A Bibliometric Study to Support Decisions on Library Collaboration
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries. - 2241-1925. ; :SI, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic libraries collaborate in several ways. For instance, collaboration can concern standards for indexing and statistics, technical solutions or collection development. A question that a given academic library might ask is with which other academic libraries the library should principally collaborate. In this study, we show how bibliometric methods can be used to generate information that can support decision making with regard to the question at stake. We evaluate the amount of research collaboration between Stockholm University and other Swedish academic institutions across five publishing years, and for the whole considered time period, where research collaboration is operationalized as co-publishing. A dataset of publications obtained from Web of Science, where each publication has at least one Stockholm University address, is used in the study. Co-publishing rates, non-fractionalized and fractionalized, across the publishing years and for the whole for period, for Stockholm University and other Swedish academic institutions, are reported. Further, parts of the outcome of the study are visualized in terms of co-publishing networks.

  • Phase evolution of radio frequency magnetron sputtered Cr-rich (Cr,Zr)(2)O-3 coatings studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during annealing in air or vacuum
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0884-2914 .- 2044-5326. ; 34:22, s. 3735-3746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase evolution of reactive radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered Cr0.28Zr0.10O0.61 coatings has been studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during annealing under air atmosphere and vacuum. The annealing in vacuum shows t-ZrO2 formation starting at similar to 750-800 degrees C, followed by decomposition of the alpha-Cr2O3 structure in conjunction with bcc-Cr formation, starting at similar to 950 degrees C. The resulting coating after annealing to 1140 degrees C is a mixture of t-ZrO2, m-ZrO2, and bcc-Cr. The air-annealed sample shows t-ZrO2 formation starting at similar to 750 degrees C. The resulting coating after annealing to 975 degrees C is a mixture of t-ZrO2 and alpha-Cr2O3 (with dissolved Zr). The microstructure coarsened slightly during annealing, but the mechanical properties are maintained, with no detectable bcc-Cr formation. A larger t-ZrO2 fraction compared with alpha-Cr2O3 is observed in the vacuum-annealed coating compared with the air-annealed coating at 975 degrees C. The results indicate that the studied pseudo-binary oxide is more stable in air atmosphere than in vacuum.

  • A bibliometric analysis of battery research with the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap as point of departure
  • 2022
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this bibliometric study, we analyze the six battery research subfields identified in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap: Battery Interface Genome, Materials Acceleration Platform, Recyclability, Smart functionalities: Self-healing, Smart functionalities: Sensing, and Manufacturability. In addition, we analyze the entire research field related to BATTERY 2030+ as a whole, using two operationalizations. We (a) evaluate the European standing in the subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field in comparison to the rest of the world, and (b) identify strongholds of the subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field across Europe. For each subfield and the field as a whole, we used seed articles, i.e. articles listed in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap or cited by such articles, in order to generate additional, similar articles located in an algorithmically obtained classification system. The output of the analysis is publication volumes, field normalized citation impact values with comparisons between country/country aggregates and between organizations, co-publishing networks between countries and organizations, and keyword co-occurrence networks. For the results related to (a), the performance of EU & associated (countries) is similar to China and the aggregate Japan-South Korea-Singapore and well below North America regarding citation impact and with respect to the field as a whole. Exceptions are, however, the subfields Battery Interface Genome and Recyclability. For the results related to (b), there is a large variability in the EU & associated organizations regarding volume in the different subfields. For citation impact, examples of high-performing EU & associated organizations are ETH Zurich and Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science.

  • Document-document similarity approaches and science mapping: experimental comparison of five approaches
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Informetrics. - Netherlands : Elsevier BV. - 1751-1577 .- 1875-5879. ; 3:1, s. 49-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper treats document–document similarity approaches in the context of science mapping. Five approaches, involving nine methods, are compared experimentally. We compare text-based approaches, the citation-based bibliographic coupling approach, and approaches that combine text-based approaches and bibliographic coupling. Forty-three articles, published in the journal Information Retrieval, are used as test documents. We investigate how well the approaches agree with a ground truth subject classification of the test documents, when the complete linkage method is used, and under two types of similarities, first-order and second-order. The results show that it is possible to achieve a very good approximation of the classification by means of automatic grouping of articles. One text-only method and one combination method, under second-order similarities in both cases, give rise to cluster solutions that to a large extent agree with the classification.

  • The link between ethnic diversity and scientific impact : the mediating effect of novelty and audience diversity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Nature. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 126:9, s. 7759-7810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the nature and value of scientific collaboration is essential for sound management and proactive research policies. One component of collaboration is the composition and diversity of contributing authors. This study explores how ethnic diversity in scientific collaboration affects scientific impact, by presenting a conceptual model to connect ethnic diversity, based on author names, with scientific impact, assuming novelty and audience diversity as mediators. The model also controls for affiliated country diversity and affiliated country size. Using path modeling, we apply the model to the Web of Science subject categories Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Ecology and Information Science & Library. For all three subject categories, and regardless of if control variables are considered or not, we find a weak positive relationship between ethnic diversity and scientific impact. The relationship is weaker, however, when control variables are included. For all three fields, the mediated effect through audience diversity is substantially stronger than the mediated effect through novelty in the relationship, and the former effect is much stronger than the direct effect between the ethnic diversity and scientific impact. Our findings further suggest that ethnic diversity is more associated with short-term scientific impact compared to long-term scientific impact.

  • Influence of Si doping and O-2 flow on arc-deposited (Al,Cr)(2)O-3 coatings
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology. A. Vacuum, Surfaces, and Films. - : A V S AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0734-2101 .- 1520-8559. ; 37:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (Al,Cr)(2)O-3 coatings with Al/( Al + Cr) = 0.5 or Al = 70 at. %, doped with 0, 5, or 10 at. % Si, were deposited on hard metal and Si(100) substrates to elucidate the influence of Si on the resulting coatings. The chemical analysis of the coatings showed between 3.3 and 7.4 at. % metal fraction Si incorporated into all studied coatings depending on cathode Si composition. The incorporated Si content does not change significantly with different oxygen flows covering a wide range of deposition conditions from low to high O-2 flow during growth. The addition of Si promotes the metastable B1-like cubic structure over the thermodynamically stable corundum structure. The hardness determined by nanoindentation of the as-deposited coatings is slightly reduced upon Si incorporation as well as upon increased Al content. Si is found enriched in droplets but can also be found at a lower content, evenly spread, without visible segregation at the similar to 5 nm scale, in the actual oxide coating. The positive effect of improved cathode erosion upon Si incorporation has to be balanced against the promotion of the metastable B1-like structure, having lower room temperature hardness and inferior thermal stability compared to the corundum structure. • Phase composition and transformations in magnetron-sputtered (Al,V)2O3 coatings
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coatings of (Al1-xVx)2O3, with x ranging from 0 to 1, were deposited by pulsed DC reactive sputter deposition on Si(100) at a temperature of 550 °C. XRD showed three different crystal structures depending on V-metal fraction in the coating: α-V2O3 rhombohedral structure for 100 at.% V, a defect spinel structure for the intermediate region, 63–42 at.% V. At lower V-content, 18 and 7 at.%, a gamma-alumina-like solid solution was observed, shifted to larger d-spacing compared to pure γ-Al2O3. The microstructure changes from large columnar faceted grains for α-V2O3 to smaller equiaxed grains when lowering the vanadium content towards pure γ-Al2O3. Annealing in air resulted in formation of V2O5 crystals on the surface of the coating after annealing to 500 °C for 42 at.% V and 700 °C for 18 at.% V metal fraction respectively. The highest thermal stability was shown for pure γ-Al2O3-coating, which transformed to α-Al2O3 after annealing to 1100 °C. Highest hardness was observed for the Al-rich oxides, ~24 GPa. The latter decreased with increasing V-content, larger than 7 at.% V metal fraction. The measured hardness after annealing in air decreased in conjunction with the onset of further oxidation of the coatings.

  • Structural evolution in reactive RF magnetron sputtered (Cr,Zr)2O3 coatings during annealing
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 131, s. 543-552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reactive RF-magnetron sputtering is used to grow Cr0.28Zr0.10O0.61 coatings at 500 degrees C. Coatings are annealed at 750 degrees C, 810 degrees C, and 870 degrees C. The microstructure evolution of the pseudobinary oxide compound is characterized through high resolution state of the art HRSTEM and HREDX-maps, revealing the segregation of Cr and Zr on the nm scale. The as-deposited coating comprises cc-(Cr,Zr)(2)O-3 solid solution with a Zr-rich (Zr,Cr)O-x. amorphous phase. After annealing to 750 degrees C tetragonal ZrO2 nucleates and grows from the amorphous phase. The ZrO2 phase is stabilized in its tetragonal structure at these fairly low annealing temperatures, possibly due to the small grain size (below 30 nm). Correlated with the nucleation and growth of the tetragonal-ZrO2 phase is an increase in hardness, with a maximum hardness after annealing to 750 degrees C, followed by a decrease in hardness upon coarsening, bcc metallic Cr phase formation and loss of oxygen, during annealing to 870 degrees C. The observed phase segregation opens up future design routes for pseudobinary oxides with tunable microstructural and mechanical properties. (C) 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. • Normalization of direct citations for clustering in publication-level networks : evaluation of six approaches
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 129:3, s. 1949-1968
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clustering of publication networks is an efficient way to obtain classifications of large collections of research publications. Such classifications can be used to, e.g., detect research topics, normalize citation relations, or explore the publication output of a unit. Citation networks can be created using a variety of approaches. Best practices to obtain classifications using clustering have been investigated, in particular the performance of different publication-publication relatedness measures. However, evaluation of different approaches to normalization of citation relations have not been explored to the same extent. In this paper, we evaluate five approaches to normalization of direct citation relations with respect to clustering solution quality in four data sets. A sixth approach is evaluated using no normalization. To assess the quality of clustering solutions, we use three measures. (1) We compare the clustering solution to the reference lists of a set of publications using the Adjusted Rand Index. (2) Using the Silhouette width measure, we quantity to which extent the publications have relations to other clusters than the one they have been assigned to. (3) We propose a measure that captures publications that have probably been inaccurately assigned. The results clearly show that normalization is preferred over unnormalized direct citation relations. Furthermore, the results indicate that the fractional normalization approach, which can be considered the standard approach, causes specific inaccurate assignments, which we intend to address in this paper. The geometric normalization approach has a similar performance as the fractional approach regarding Adjusted Rand Index and Silhouette width but leads to fewer inaccurate assignments at moderate to high granularity levels. We therefore believe that the geometric approach may be preferred over the fractional approach.
