  • Supporting embodied exploration of physical concepts in mixed digital and physical interactive settings
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: TEI'11. - Funchal, Portugal : ACM Press. - 1450304788 ; , s. 109-116
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper findings are presented from a study on how sensor equipped computer game technologies can be used to create tools for educational settings to learn about for example concepts in physics. In a workshop focusing on the concept of gravity, a group of children interacted with an environment consisting of both physical and digital interactive components. We discuss how the mixed digital and physical setting affects the children's coordination and collaboration and their strategies to solve the given assignment. Findings suggest that the embodied nature of the technology create new opportunities for collaboration and that the alignment of the physical and digital parts of the interactive setting is important in order to create a seamless experience that takes advantage of the properties of the respective media.

  • QR code awareness in Stockholm, Sweden
  • 2011. - 10
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This tech report describes the findings of a street survey on awareness of QR codes (2D barcodes) of the general public in Stockholm, Sweden. 108 passers-by were surveyed. Of these participants, a large majority (77%) did not recognize a QR code, and 8% reported seeing such a code before, but did not know it could be scanned using a mobile phone app. Only 15% knew what the shown QR code was, and that it could be read using a QR code reader on a mobile phone. The awareness of QR codes by the general public could be considered rather low, and their utility in Swedish public settings is currently debatable.

  • Prevalence of sleep disorders in the Turkish adult population epidemiology of sleep study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sleep and Biological Rhythms. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1446-9235 .- 1479-8425. ; 13, s. 298-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2015 Japanese Society of Sleep Research. Sleep disorders constitute an important public health problem. Prevalence of sleep disorders in Turkish adult population was investigated in a nationwide representative sample of 5021 Turkish adults (2598 women and 2423 men, response rate: 91%) by an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Insomnia was defined by the DSM-IV criteria, habitual snoring and risk for sleep-related breathing disorders (SDB) by the Berlin questionnaire, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) by the Epworth sleepiness scale score, and restless legs syndrome (RLS) by the complaints according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria. Mean age of the participants was 40.7 ± 15.1 (range 18 to 90) years. Prevalence rates (men/women) were insomnia 15.3% (10.5%/20.2%; P < 0.001), high probability of SDB 13.7% (11.1%/20.2%; P < 0.001), EDS 5.4% (5.0%/5.7%; P: 0.09), RLS 5.2% (3.0%/7.3%; P < 0.001). Aging and female gender were associated with higher prevalence of sleep disorders except for habitual snoring. Prevalence rates of the sleep disorders among Turkish adults based on the widely used questionnaires were close to the lower end of the previous estimates reported from different parts of the world. These findings would help for the assessment of the health burden of sleep disorders and addressing the risk groups for planning and implementation of health care. Sleep and Biological Rhythms

  • Therapeutic options for CTLA-4 insufficiency
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : MOSBY-ELSEVIER. - 0091-6749 .- 1097-6825. ; 149:2, s. 736-746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Heterozygous germline mutations in cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA4) impair the immunomodulatory function of regulatory T cells. Affected individuals are prone to life-threatening autoimmune and lymphoproliferative complications. A number of therapeutic options are currently being used with variable effectiveness. Objective: Our aim was to characterize the responsiveness of patients with CTLA-4 insufficiency to specific therapies and provide recommendations for the diagnostic workup and therapy at an organ-specific level. Methods: Clinical features, laboratory findings, and response to treatment were reviewed retrospectively in an international cohort of 173 carriers of CTLA4 mutation. Patients were followed between 2014 and 2020 for a total of 2624 months from diagnosis. Clinical manifestations were grouped on the basis of organ-specific involvement. Medication use and response were recorded and evaluated. Results: Among the 173 CTLA4 mutation carriers, 123 (71%) had been treated for immune complications. Abatacept, rituximab, sirolimus, and corticosteroids ameliorated disease severity, especially in cases of cytopenias and lymphocytic organ infiltration of the gut, lungs, and central nervous system. Immunoglobulin replacement was effective in prevention of infection. Only 4 of 16 patients (25%) with cytopenia who underwent splenectomy had a sustained clinical response. Cure was achieved with stem cell transplantation in 13 of 18 patients (72%). As a result of the aforementioned methods, organ-specific treatment pathways were developed. Conclusion: Systemic immunosuppressants and abatacept may provide partial control but require ongoing administration. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation offers a possible cure for patients with CTLA-4 insufficiency.

  • Mobile 2.0 - The Future of Mobile Apps : Mashing It Up and Getting It Out There!
  • 2011
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • What makes for a successful mobile app? What are the business models for the emerging mobile eco-system? How do companies and researchers develop, launch and evaluate services for large numbers of users, potentially in the millions? And what is it that people actually *do* when they use the new crop of context-aware and location-based services? At the Mobile Life Centre in Sweden, academia and industry are working side by side to explore these issues. This panel will report on techniques to create, distribute and evaluate mobile services based on developing mobile web standards, such as HTML 5, and how to combine and "mash up" existing services with the new capabilities of modern smartphones. We will give an insight into methods for grounding new service concepts in real-world practices, and illustrate with examples of studies of commercial services such as Foursquare and Gowalla. We also report from inquiries into current industry practices, such as an analysis of the actors in the ecosystem; understanding how users are appropriating new services; studies of the strategies employed by mobile start-ups to reach critical mass; and experience of performing "research in the large" with big user groups. The presenters come from universities and research institutes as well as industry labs, and have extensive experience in working on practical and real-world issues in cutting-edge mobile domains. Finally, in a concluding panel discussion, we invite the audience to share and discuss their experiences to paint a picture of the future of the mobile app world - Mobile 2.0.

  • Weather Gods and Fruit Kids - Embodying abstract concepts using tactile feedback and whole body interaction
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Connecting computer-supported collaborative learning to policy and practice. - : International Society of the Learning Sciences. - 9780578091525 ; , s. 160-167
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present findings based on the design and study of a game like activity that allows for physical and bodily interaction around abstract concepts like energy and energy consumption in a collaborative learning setting. The game, called Weather Gods and Fruit Kids, uses motion sensing technologies in combination with tactile and audio feedback to create an embodied interactive setting without computer screens. We analyze and discuss the properties of the interactive setting as well as the interactions with and around the system using characteristics such as multiple modalities of response, large space interaction and aspects of focus and attention. The work suggests that alternative pedagogical activities can be created providing new entries to theoretical concepts using an embodied interaction approach. In particular it may support kinesthetic learners in their preference to learn by being physically engaged.

  • Identification of susceptibility loci for Takayasu arteritis through a large multi-ancestral genome-wide association study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - CAMBRIDGE, MA USA : Cell Press. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 108:1, s. 84-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Takayasu arteritis is a rare inflammatory disease of large arteries. We performed a genetic study in Takayasu arteritis comprising 6,670 individuals (1,226 affected individuals) from five different populations. We discovered HLA risk factors and four non-HLA susceptibility loci in VPS8, SVEP1, CFL2, and chr13q21 and reinforced IL12B, PTK2B, and chr21q22 as robust susceptibility loci shared across ancestries. Functional analysis proposed plausible underlying disease mechanisms and pinpointed ETS2 as a potential causal gene for chr21q22 association. We also identified >60 candidate loci with suggestive association (p < 5 x 10(-s)) and devised a genetic risk score for Takayasu arteritis. Takayasu arteritis was compared to hundreds of other traits, revealing the closest genetic relatedness to inflammatory bowel disease. Epigenetic patterns within risk loci suggest roles for monocytes and B cells in Takayasu arteritis. This work enhances understanding of the genetic basis and pathophysiology of Takayasu arteritis and provides clues for potential new therapeutic targets.

  • Teens Using Portrait Catalog : An Evaluation Of a Mobile Photo Sharing System
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction. - 1942-390X .- 1942-3918.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we describe a mobile photo sharing system and a mass scale evaluation at a local youth festival. The system prevents pictures received from being forwarded and aims at adding meaning to photos shared through such a system making them collectable. The study setup was at a large youth festival where 400 teenagers had their photo taken and given the opportunity to have the application installed on their own phones. Although we achieved a large user base, the actual use was never triggered to reach critical mass. We report on the experience of the users, and also report on how teenagers in our study mostly share photos by looking at each other’s phone screens.

  • Face to face makes a difference : Recommendation Practices of Users of Mobile Services
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: UbiComp2011. - Beijing, China : ACM Press.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The mobile app stores and markets provide companies, independent developers and researchers alike with possibilities to distribute innovative designs for mobile devices on a global scale. However, reaching a large numbers of users does not in itself ensure a large number of users adopting the mobile application or service. Large-scale adoption depends on additional factors such as novelty in service design, ease of use, enjoyable interaction, built-in mechanisms for further distribution of the mobile service as well as the practice of word-of-mouth recommendations. In this position paper we present the background and preliminary findings from a study aimed at investigating the motivations and practices by which users recommend mobile apps and services among their acquaintances. We discuss our perspective on distribution of mobile applications and services on a large scale and end this paper by suggesting questions for discussion and future research.

  • Gamification and location-sharing : Some emerging social conflicts
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: CHI2011. - Vancouver, Canada : ACM Press.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Location-sharing services such as foursquare are a prominent example of commercial apps that use gamification to increase user engagement. These gamification elements however have to coexist with a plethora of usage motivations. We here present selected observations on emerging conflicts between gamification elements and other usage motivations for location-sharing. We argue gamification needs to take into account the social context in which services operate and that conflicts within this context can both be detrimental and add to playfulness.
