  • Combined emulsion and solvent evaporation (ESE) synthesis route to well-ordered mesoporous materials
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 23:3, s. 1459-1464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Control over morphology and internal mesostructure of surfactant templated silicas remains a challenge, especially when considering scaling laboratory syntheses up to industrial volumes. Herewereport a method combining emulsification with the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method for preparing spherical, mesoporous silica particles. This emulsion and solvent evaporation (ESE) method has several potential advantages over classic precipitation routes: it is easily scaled while providing superior control over stoichiometric homogeneity of templating surfactants and inorganic precursors, and particle sizes and distributions are determined by principles developed for manipulating droplet sizes within water-in-oil emulsions. To demonstrate the method, triblock copolymer P104 is used as a templating amphiphile, generating unusually well-ordered 2D hexagonal (P6mm) mesoporous silica, while particle sizes and morphologies were controlled by varying the type of emulsifier and the method for emulsification

  • Photochromic mesostructured silica pigments dispersed in latex films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 15:0149-2136, s. 3507-3513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have incorporated the photochromic dyes spiropyran and spirooxazine in surfactant templated mesostructured silica particles. Spherical inorganic–organic hybrid pigments with varying dye content were produced by a one-pot synthesis in an aerosol reactor where the internal mesostructure could be controlled. The mesostructured inorganic–organic hybrid pigments provide a mechanically and chemically rigid framework that protects the dyes and facilitate handling. We show that an organic latex binder can be used to prepare transparent photochromic films of varying thickness. Changing the dye loading in the pigments and the pigment content in the films provides a versatile route for tuning the photochromic response. The pigmented films show both fast and direct photochromism, where the decay time for thermal bleaching is very fast in the case of spirooxazine doped pigments (kSO= 0.094 s–1), being in the range of the best reported values for solid state composites.

  • Association between development of lower lip cancer and tobacco habits
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal of oral and maxillofacial surgery (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0278-2391 .- 1531-5053. ; 49:10, s. 1044-1047; discussion 1048

    • Tobacco use is considered to increase the risk of tumor induction. The purpose of this case-controlled investigation was to assess the association of tobacco habits and development of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip. Sixty-one patients treated for lower lip cancer, aged between 42 and 90 years, were studied. Age- and sex-matched healthy controls showed a similar exposure to tobacco in years and a comparable distribution of tobacco habits. Although the mean exposure factor (duration times exposure) was greater in the tumor group, no intimate correlation between lip cancer and tobacco was demonstrated. However, an increased, although small, occurrence of herpes labialis lesions was found in cancer patients. The hypothesis is presented that smokers experiencing recurrent herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infections are more liable to tumor initiation, which issue will be subjected to a future study.

  • Saliva induces expression of antimicrobial peptides and promotes intracellular killing of bacteria in keratinocytes by epidermal growth factor receptor transactivation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Dermatology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-0963 .- 1365-2133. ; 176:2, s. 403-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Wounds in the oral cavity, constantly exposed to both saliva and bacteria, heal quickly without infection. Furthermore, during licking of skin wounds, saliva promotes wound healing and plays a role in keeping the wound free of infection. Objectives: To investigate whether saliva induces expression of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in human epidermal keratinocytes and whether saliva promotes clearance of intracellular bacteria in these cells. Methods: Expression of AMPs was investigated in the oral mucosa and ex vivo injured skin by immunohistochemistry. Human beta-defensin-3 expression was investigated in epidermal keratinocytes after saliva stimulation, using real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence. Results: We found higher expression of AMPs in the oral mucosa than in the epidermis. Saliva accelerated the injury-induced expression of AMPs in human skin ex vivo and was a potent inducer of the expression of AMPs in epidermal keratinocytes. The expression of AMPs was induced by metalloproteinase-dependent epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) transactivation mediated by a salivary lipid. Saliva increased the intracellular clearance of Staphylococcus aureus in keratinocytes through EGFR activation. Conclusions: These findings suggest a previously unreported role of saliva in innate immunity and demonstrate for the first time that saliva induces gene expression in epidermal keratinocytes.

  • Control of internal (2D and 3D hexagonal) mesostructure and particle morphology of spherical mesoporous silica particles using the emulsion and solvent evaporation (ESE) method
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Microporous and Mesoporous Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1387-1811 .- 1873-3093. ; 120:3, s. 359-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we demonstrate the opportunities controlling internal structure as well as exterior morphology of surfactant templated mesostructured materials through the newly developed emulsion and solvent evaporation (ESE) method. In particular, we consider the control of synthesis temperature and map the influence upon both internal structure and surface morphology of particles templated by the temperature sensitive Pluronic block copolymer F127. Furthermore, we vary compositions, by adding poly(propylene glycol) acting as a swelling agent, as well as by controlling the moisture content. Both of these are having an impact on the internal mesostructure as well as the pore size. Apart from probing internal structure by scattering techniques, the accessibility of the mesoscopic pores of these materials are investigated by measuring the adsorption of a cationic dye, Janus Green B, into the materials. This method shows that accessibility varies dramatically with internal structure. Further, by carefully controlling the moisture content when using the cationic surfactant C16TAB as template, a well ordered 3D hexagonal closed packed (P63/mmc) material with large surface area as well as pore volume was prepared. This further indicates the versatility of the new preparation technique.

  • Surfactant-templated mesoporous silica as a pigment in inkjet paper coatings
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pulp and Paper Science (JPPS). - 0826-6220. ; 32, s. 32-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The feasibility of a novel type of surfactant-templated mesoporous silica particles as pigments in inkjet paper has been evaluated. The surfactant-templated mesoporous silica pigments with small pores and narrow pore size distribution were investigated, and compared to a typical silica gel with larger pores and broader size distribution. The surfactant-templated pigments required significantly lower amounts of binder and gave improvements in colour richness and sharpness, relative to the silica gel pigment.
