    • Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcome for different indications for PCI in an unselected, nationwide PCI population at short- and long-term follow-up.Methods and results: We evaluated clinical outcome up to six years after PCI in all patients undergoing a PCI procedure for different indications in Sweden between 2006 and 2010. A total of 70,479 patients were treated for stable coronary artery disease (CAD) (21.0%), unstable angina (11.0%), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) (36.6%) and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (31.4%). Mortality was higher in STEMI patients at one year after PCI (9.6%) compared to NSTEMI (4.7%), unstable angina (2.2%) and stable CAD (2.0%). At one year after PCI until the end of follow-up, the adjusted mortality risk (one to six years after PCI) and the risk of myocardial infarction were comparable between NSTEMI and STEMI patients and lower in patients with unstable angina and stable CAD. The adjusted risk of stent thrombosis and heart failure was highest in STEMI patients.Conclusions: The risk of short-term mortality, heart failure and stent thrombosis is highest for STEMI patients after PCI. Therapies to reduce stent thrombosis and heart failure appear to be most important in decreasing mortality in patients with STEMI or NSTEMI undergoing PCI.

  • Effect of Low Oxygen Partial Pressure on the Chromium Partition in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3-Al2O3 Synthetic Slag at Elevated Temperatures

    • The objective of the present work is to get an understanding of the impact of Al2O3 addition on the phase relationships in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Cr2O3 slags at low oxygen partial pressures (P-O2 = 10(-4) Pa), with a view to control the precipitation of Cr-spinel in the slag. The equilibrium phases in CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Cr2O3 slag system in the range on 1673-1873 K have been investigated. The compositions close to the industrial slag systems were chosen. The Cr2O3 content was fixed at 6 wt% and MgO at 8 wt%. Al2O3 contents in the slag were varied in the range of 3-12 wt%. The basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag was set to 1.6. Gas/slag equilibrium technique was adopted. The samples were heated to 1873 K and soaked at this temperature for 24 h. The samples were then slow cooled to 1673 K and equilibrated for an additional 24 h. The oxygen partial pressure was kept at 10(-4) Pa. A gas mixture of CO/CO2 was used to control the oxygen partial pressure. After the equilibration, the samples were quenched in water. The chromium distribution and phase compositions in the quenched slags were studied using SEM-WDS and XRD techniques. The results were compared with the phase equilibrium calculations obtained from FACTSAGE software and the samples equilibrated in air. The size of spinel crystals increased drastically after slow cooling followed by annealing compared to samples being quenched after soaking at 1873 K. It was also found that low oxygen partial pressure had a strong impact on chromium partition. The amount of spinel phase increases with increased Al2O3 content.

  • Machine Learning in High-Energy Physics: Displaced Event Detection and Developments in ROOT/TMVA

    • Many proposed extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics predict long-lived particles, which can decay at a significant distance from the primary interaction point. Such events produce displaced vertices with distinct detector signatures when compared to standard model processes. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) operates at a collision rate where it is not feasible to record all generated data—a problem that will be exac-erbated in the coming high-luminosity upgrade—necessitating an online trigger system to decide which events to keep based on partial information. However, the trigger is not directly sensitive to signatures with displaced vertices from Long-lived particles (LLPs). Current LLP detection approaches require a computationally expensive reconstruction step, or rely on auxiliary signatures such as energetic particles or missing energy. An improved trigger sensitivity increases the reach of searches for extensions to the standard model.This thesis explores the possibility to apply machine learning methods directly on low-level tracking features, such as detector hits and hit-pairs to identify displaced high-mass decays while avoiding a full vertex and track reconstruction step.A dataset is developed where modelled displaced signatures from novel and known physics processes are mixed in a custom simulation environment, which models the in-ner detector of a general purpose particle detector. Two machine learning models are evaluated using the dataset: a multi-layer dense Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and a Graph Neural Network (GNN). Two case studies suggest that dense ANNs have difficulty capturing relational information in low-level data, while GNNs can feasibily discriminate heavy displaced decay signatures from a Standard Model background. Furthermore it was found that GNNs can perform at a background rejection factor of 103 and a signal efficiency of 20% in collision environments with moderate levels of pile-up interactions, i.e. low-energy particle collisions simultaneous with the primary hard scatter. Further work is required to integrate the approach into a trigger environment. In particular, detector material and measurement resolution effects should be included in the simulation, which should be scaled to model the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) with its more complicated geometry and its high levels of pile-up.In parallel, the machine learning landscape is quickly evolving and concentrating into large software frameworks with expanding scope, while the High-Energy Physics (HEP) community maintains its own set of tools and frameworks, one example being the Toolkit for Multivariate Analysis (TMVA) which is part of the ROOT framework. This thesis discusses the long- and short-term evolution of these tools, both current trends and some relations to parallel developments in Industry 4.0.

    • Sparse signal models with learned dictionaries of morphological features provide efficient codes in a variety of applications. Such models can be useful to reduce sensor data rates and simplify the communication, processing and analysis of information, provided that the algorithm can be realized in an efficient way and that the signal allows for sparse coding. In this paper we outline an FPGA prototype of a general purpose "analog-to-feature converter", which learns an overcomplete dictionary of features from the input signal using matching pursuit and a form of Hebbian learning. The resulting code is sparse, event-based and suitable for analysis with parallel and neuromorphic processors. We present results of two case studies. The first case is a blind source separation problem where features are learned from an artificial signal with known features. We demonstrate that the learned features are qualitatively consistent with the true features. In the second case, features are learned from ball-bearing vibration data. We find that vibration signals from bearings with faults have characteristic features and codes, and that the event-based code enable a reduction of the data rate by at least one order of magnitude.

    • Objectives The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics and outcome of all consecutive patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in an unselected nationwide cohort over the past 2 decades. Background Over the last 20 years, treatment with PCI has evolved dramatically, but the change in patient characteristics has not been well described. Methods We included all patients undergoing a PCI procedure for the first time between January 1990 and December 2010 from the SCAAR (Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry). Patients were divided into different cohorts on the basis of the year of the first PCI procedure. Results A total of 144,039 patients was included. The mean age increased from 60.1 +/- 9.9 years in 1990 to 1995 to 67.1 +/- 11.2 years in 2009 to 2010. The proportion of patients presenting with unstable coronary artery disease and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction increased from 27.4% and 6.2% to 47.7% and 32.5%, respectively. Diabetes mellitus and multivessel disease were more often present in the later-year cohorts. The 1-year mortality increased from 2.2% in 1990 to 1995 to 5.9% in 2009 to 2010, but after adjustment for age and indication, a modest decrease was shown, mainly in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients. Conclusions Characteristics of PCI patients have changed substantially over time, reflecting the establishment of new evidence. The increasing age and proportion of patients undergoing PCI for acute coronary syndromes greatly influence outcome. Understanding the changing patient characteristics is important for the translation of evidence to real-world clinical practice.   • Effects of acute temperature changes on gut physiology in two species of sculpin from the west coast of Greenland

    • For a fish to thrive, the gut must function efficiently. This is achieved through a range of processes, including controlled patterns of gut motility and modifications in gut blood flow. The knowledge of how gut functions in fish are affected by environmental temperature is sparse, and in order to understand how changes in climate may affect fish populations, we need to understand how gut blood flow and gut motility are affected by changes in temperature. By simultaneous recording of gut blood flow, gut motility, cardiac output, heart rate and cardiac stroke volume, in vivo at 4, 9 and 14 °C, the acute thermal sensitivity of a thermal generalist (shorthorn sculpin Myoxocephalu scorpius) was compared to the more strictly Arctic species (Arctic sculpin M. scorpioides). Temperature effects on gut motility were further explored in vitro, using isolated smooth muscles. Elevated water temperatures increased gut blood flow and contractile activity. Contraction frequency increased nearly threefold and gut blood flow almost doubled with the 10 °C increase. Both cardiac output and heart rate increased with temperature, while cardiac stroke volume decreased. The cholinergic agonist carbachol was most potent on smooth muscles at 9 °C. There were no differences between the two species, suggesting that the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems of Arctic sculpin, although a more pronounced Arctic species, have similar abilities to cope with acute fluctuations in water temperature as shorthorn sculpin. The impact of increased gut activity at higher temperatures needs further investigation before the effects of climate change can be predicted.

    • Enteric electrical activity, cardiac output and gut blood flow were measured in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) acclimated to either 10 degrees C or 16 degrees C. Enteric electrical activity showed, in both the fasted and postprandial state, a distinct pattern with clusters of burst-like events interspersed by silent periods. The frequency of electrical events increased postprandially for both acclimation groups. Event frequency increased from 3.0+/-0.5 to 9.6+/-1.4 events min(-1) and from 5.9+/-0.9 to 11.8+/-2.0 events min(-1) in the 10 degrees C and 16 degrees C groups, respectively. Similarly, the number of events per cluster increased postprandially for both acclimation groups. Gut blood flow, cardiac output and heart rate increased after feeding. The gut blood flow significantly increased in both groups and peaked at 257+/-19% and 236+/-22% in the 10 degrees C and 16 degrees C groups, respectively. There was a strong correlation between the number of events and gut blood flow at both temperatures. Comparison between the two groups showed that fish acclimated to 16 degrees C may have an increased cost of sustaining the basal activity of the gut compared with the group acclimated to 10 degrees C. In conclusion, we have for the first time measured enteric electrical activity in vivo in a fish species and we have also demonstrated a strong correlation between gut blood flow and enteric electrical activity in fasted and postprandial fish.

    • Mg-spinel phase is known to be important for control of Cr leaching from Cr-containing slags. The objective of the present study is to get an understanding of the phase relationships in the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3 system with a view to control the precipitation of Cr-spinel in the slag phase. The equilibrium phases in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3 slag system in the range of 1673 K to 1873 K (1400 A degrees C to 1600 A degrees C) have been investigated experimentally and compared with the results from thermodynamic calculations. The slag compositions close to the industrial slag systems were chosen. The Cr2O3 and MgO contents in the slag were fixed to be 6 and 8 wt pct, respectively. The basicity (CaO/SiO2) of the slag was varied in the range of 1.0 to 2.0. The slags were synthesized at a pre-determined oxygen partial pressure (10(-4)) or air (2.13 x 10(4) Pa) at a temperature above the liquidus temperature. The samples were then soaked at targeted temperatures for 24 hours in controlled atmosphere in order to achieve the equilibrium state before quenching in water. Four different heat-treatment regimes (defined as Ia, Ib, II.a and II.b) in Section II-D) were used in the present experiments. The lower oxygen partial pressure was maintained by a suitable mixture of CO and CO2 gases. Phases present and their compositions in the quenched slags were studied using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The chromium content in the phases present was analyzed using wavelength-dispersive spectrometer. The experimental results obtained are compared with the calculation results from Factsage software. The size of spinel crystals increased drastically after slow-cooling from 1873 K (1600 A degrees C) followed by annealing at 1673 K (1400 A degrees C) for 24 hours (heating regimes II) compared to samples being quenched directly after soaking at 1873 K (1600 A degrees C) (heating regime I.a). It was found that the amount of foreign elements in the spinel phase, and other phases decreased after soaking at oxygen partial pressure of 10(-4) Pa resulting in phases with less defects and foreign oxide contents compared to those treated in air. The size of spinel crystals was found to be larger in samples with lower basicity.

    • In the present work, the effects of the slag composition and heat-treatment conditions on the phase relationships in a number of Cr-containing industrial and synthetic slags were investigated with a view to control the precipitation of Cr-spinel in the slag phase. Gas/slag equilibrium technique was used for the chromium partition and the phase relationship study. The phase relationships in synthetic slags and industrial EAF slags supplied by Swedish steelmaking plants have been investigated experimentally in the temperature range of 1473-1873 K. The slags were re-melted, slow-cooled to, and soaked at targeted temperatures in controlled atmosphere. Two different heat-treatment sequences were used in the present experiments. The oxygen partial pressure (p(O2) = 10(-3) Pa) was maintained by a suitable mixture of CO and CO2 gases. Phases present and their compositions in the quenched slags were studied using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The chromium content in the phases present was analyzed using wavelength-dispersive spectrometer (WDS). Chromium partition was found to depend on the heat-treatment temperature.

  • Nationwide Assessment of Patient Trajectories in Mantle Cell Lymphoma : The Swedish MCLcomplete Project

    • Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell malignancy currently considered incurable. Although some patients obtain prolonged remission after first-line chemoimmunotherapy, many will need several treatment lines. Here, we present a nationwide assessment of treatment strategies, time to progression and survival in MCL. All patients diagnosed with MCL 2006-2018 were identified in the Swedish Lymphoma Register. Information on all lines of therapy was extracted from the medical records. Overall and progression-free survival (OS and PFS) were assessed through August 2021. In total, 1367 patients were included (median age, 71 years) and median follow-up was 6.8 years. Two hundred and one (15%) were managed initially with watch-and-wait, but 1235 (90%) eventually received treatment. The most frequently used first-line regimens were rituximab-bendamustine (BR) (n = 368; 30%) and Nordic MCL2 (n = 342; 28%). During follow-up, 630 patients (46%) experienced relapse/progression and 546 (40%) received second-line treatment. The most frequently used second-line regimen was BR (n = 185; 34%) but otherwise a wide variety of second-line treatments were used. Further, 382 and 228 patients experienced a second or third relapse/progression, respectively. Median PFS after first (PFS-1), second (PFS-2), third (PFS-3), and fourth (PFS-4) treatment lines was 29.4, 8.9, 4.3, and 2.7 months. Patients with early progression, defined as a PFS-1 <24 months, had an inferior median OS of 13 versus 37 months in patients with later relapse. For patients treated with frontline BR, however, time to relapse had no impact on later outcome. By use of nationwide population-based data, we provide important benchmarks for future studies of all treatment lines in MCL.

    • Sveriges natursköna kust med vidsträckta skärgårdar erbjuder fantastiska förhållanden för fritidsbåtliv. Idag finns uppskattningsvis mer än 700 000 fritidsbåtar i Sverige, vilket är en av de högsta siffrorna i världen sett till befolkningsmängden. Kustens vågskyddade skärgård ger också goda förutsättningar att förvara fritidsbåtar vid bryggor, och idag täcks stora områden av bryggor och småbåtshamnar. Det stora antalet båtar och bryggor kan ge betydande effekter på miljön, men kunskapen om fritidsbåtlivets sammanlagda påverkan på Sveriges kustmiljöer har hittills varit bristfällig. Havsmiljöinstitutets mål med denna rapport har varit att sammanställa kunskapsläget kring hur fritidsbåtar påverkar grunda kustekosystem i Sverige, samt bedöma omfattningen av denna påverkan och om utveckling är hållbar. Syftet med rapporten är att bidra till utvecklingen av en mer hållbar förvaltning av fritidsbåtlivet genom att sammanställa vetenskaplig kunskap inom detta område på ett lättillgängligt sätt. Sammanställningen visar att det finns ett starkt stöd i den vetenskapliga litteraturen för att fritidsbåtar ger upphov till många negativa effekter på kustmiljön. Med fritidsbåtslivet följer en rad olika fysiska strukturer och aktiviteter som var och en ger upphov till flera olika typer av miljöpåverkan. En ökad utbredning av småbåtshamnar, bryggor och muddrade områden medför förluster av viktiga bottenmiljöer och leder ofta till en långvarig försämring av miljöförhållanden lokalt. Muddrings- och dumpningsaktiviteter leder till ökad uppgrumling och spridning av sediment, näringsämnen och miljögifter över stora områden, vilket bland annat påverkar bottenvegetation, fiskar och musslor negativt. Båttrafik och ankring leder till uppgrumling och erosion av sediment samt till skador på bottenmiljön. Undervattensbuller från båtarnas motorer stör också fiskar och däggdjur. Vidare medför användning av fritidsbåtar betydande utsläpp av giftiga ämnen och föroreningar från båtbottenfärger och förbränningsmotorer. Drygt 60 % av alla bryggor och småbåtshamnar återfinns i grunda (<3 m), vågskyddade områden med mjukbottnar, trots att de endast utgör en fjärdedel av kustens totala grundområden. Dessa områden lämpar sig väl för båtförvaring, men är också en av kustens mest produktiva och värdefulla miljöer. Grunda mjukbottnar är en viktig miljö för olika kärlväxter och kransalger, som i sin tur utgör viktiga uppväxthabitat för många olika fiskarter och kräftdjur. Rapporten visar att dessa miljöer är extra känsliga för en majoritet av de störningar som fritidsbåtlivet ger upphov till. Sammantaget medför detta att fritidsbåtslivet i förhållande till sin omfattning genererar stora skador på miljöer med höga naturvärden.

    • Sweden has a long and beautiful coastline with extensive archipelagos that offer exceptional conditions for recreational boating. There are more than 700 000 recreational boats in Sweden, which is one of the highest numbers in the world in relation to the population size. Small tidal differences and many sheltered bays also provide good conditions for storing boats at docks and piers and jetties. As a result, large areas of the Swedish coast are today covered with docks and marinas for recreational boats. The large number of boats and docks could have substantial negative effects on the environment. However, the understanding of the cumulative impact of recreational boating on Swedish coastal ecosystem has so far been incomplete. The goal with this report from the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment has been to compile and summarize the present state of knowledge regarding how recreational boating affect shallow coastal ecosystems in Sweden, to determine the extent of the impact and if the development is sustainable. The aim has been to present scientific knowledge on these topics in an accessible way in order to facilitate the development of a more sustainable management of recreational boating in Sweden.The scientific literature strongly support that recreational boating generates many negative effects on the marine environment. Recreational boating requires a number of physical structures and generate a number activities that each results in several different pressures on the environment. An increased number of marinas, docks and dredged canals results in losses of important habitats, as well as long-term deterioration of the environmental conditions locally. Dredging and dumping of dredge material results in increased turbidity and dispersal of sediment, nutrients and pollutants over large areas with negative effects on many aquatic organisms, e.g. vegetation, fishes and mussels. Traffic from recreational boats and anchoring result in increased turbidity and sediment erosion as well as damage to habitats. Motor boats also create underwater noise that can disturb e.g. fishes, seals and porpoises. In addition, recreational boating result in substantial emissions of toxic substances and pollution from e.g. antifouling paint and combustion engines.More than 60% of all docks and marinas are found in wave sheltered, shallow (<3 m) areas with soft bottoms, despite that this environment only constitute 25% of shallow coastal areas in Sweden. These sheltered areas are well suited for storing boats, but also constitute one of the most productive and valuable environments along the coast. They are important environments for vegetation such as seagrass, pondweed and stoneworts, which in turn constitute important spawning and nursery areas for a large number of fish and invertebrates. The report shows that these shallow soft bottom environments are very sensitive to a majority of the stressors that recreational boating generate. Boating therefore create a disproportionally large impact on environments with high values.Although the impact from a single recreational boat or dock is limited, the cumulative effect is substantial because of the sheer number. According to recent inventories, there are today almost 110 000 docks along the Swedish coast covering almost 2 000 km of bottom. In comparison with the 1960s, the amount of docks has increased with almost 160%, which today constitutes an increase of 1 700 new docks per year. Recent studies show that vegetation is degraded as the number of docks and boats increase within shallow, wave sheltered areas. It is estimated that almost 20% of this important environment is negatively affected by recreational boating today; in the County of Stockholm and Västra Götaland around 30% of shallow, wave sheltered areas are estimated to be impacted. Despite several management measures in the last decades to decrease coastal exploitation, there are no signs that the rate of exploitation is decreasing.The large number of recreational boats with combustion engines, the trend of increasing engine size, and the fact that engines lack all forms of emission control result in substantial emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. Recent estimates suggest that the emissions from recreational boats are very high and comparable with other types of transport in Sweden. Emission of toxic copper from antifouling paint on recreational boats is also substantial and contributes to the high levels of copper in coastal waters, which is above the limit for good ecological status in 85% of the assessed coastal water bodies.Although most boat owners likely spend time at sea because they enjoy and care about the environment, the results presented in this report show that recreational boating have a substantial negative impact on the coastal environment, particularly in shallow, wave protected areas. In these areas, today’s use and development of recreational boating cannot be considered sustainable. However, the report also shows that there are ways to decrease the environmental impact from recreational boating. By changing the way we use and store recreational boats, and by improving management we can still allow coming generations to enjoy unexploited coastal environments with clear water and a rich plant and animal life.The report ends by discussing new, possible measures and solutions for a more sustainable use of recreational boats in Sweden, which could be a starting point for continuing such work. These include e.g. to identify vulnerable coastal environments in order to steer away exploitation and recreational boat traffic from these areas. By storing boats on land, the need for docks, dredging and toxic antifouling paint could decrease. Reduced speed limits and access limitations for recreational motorboats in certain areas could decrease negative impact on the most vulnerable habitats. Finally, new, environmentally friendly technology, and new financial instruments could be used to decrease negative impacts and create a more sustainable development of recreational boating.

    • Interoperability is a central problem in digitization and sos engineering, which concerns the capacity of systems to exchange information and cooperate. The task to dynamically establish interoperability between heterogeneous cps at run-time is a challenging problem. Different aspects of the interoperability problem have been studied in fields such as sos, neural translation, and agent-based systems, but there are no unifying solutions beyond domain-specific standardization efforts. The problem is complicated by the uncertain and variable relations between physical processes and human-centric symbols, which result from, e.g., latent physical degrees of freedom, maintenance, re-configurations, and software updates. Therefore, we surveyed the literature for concepts and methods needed to automatically establish sos with purposeful cps communication, focusing on machine learning and connecting approaches that are not integrated in the present literature. Here, we summarize recent developments relevant to the dynamic interoperability problem, such as representation learning for ontology alignment and inference on heterogeneous linked data; neural networks for transcoding of text and code; concept learning-based reasoning; and emergent communication. We find that there has been a recent interest in deep learning approaches to establishing communication under different assumptions about the environment, language, and nature of the communicating entities. Furthermore, we present examples of architectures and discuss open problems associated with ai-enabled solutions in relation to sos interoperability requirements. Although these developments open new avenues for research, there are still no examples that bridge the concepts necessary to establish dynamic interoperability in complex sos, and realistic testbeds are needed.
