  • Bridging the logistics divide with service inclusion for socially sustainable urban logistics services
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research. - 1567-7141. ; 24:1, s. 30-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rise of e-commerce over the last decade has increased the pressure on urban logistics and highlighted important sustainability challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this trend and underscored the need to address social sustainability challenges with e-commerce. In particular, the pandemic drew attention to the uneven access to home deliveries and the importance of having a logistic system that is aligned with the principles underlying society and sustainable development goals. The purpose of this paper is to identify urban logistics services that emerged in response to access limitations linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to analyse how these services can enhance inclusivity and fair access to goods. We adopt an exploratory and qualitative research design based on a deductive content analysis approach. This method aims to systematize, objectively analyse, and draw assumptions from secondary evidence and semi-structured interviews with key actors. We identified several urban logistics innovations that spanned organizational, transportation modal shift, informational and technological approaches to face existing restrictions. The findings indicate a deficiency in inclusivity and equitable access to logistics innovations, prompting ad-hoc organization by citizens and private initiatives in response to the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic. We introduced the concept of logistics divide to analyse the inequalities on who benefits from logistics innovations. This divide is a consequence of the uneven ability of different consumer segments to get access to those services either due to digital mastery, geographical barriers, legal barriers, or to economic reasons. The findings also showed that urban logistics actors have started to innovate to increase access to goods after the pandemic disclosed this logistics divide. In essence, this paper shows the importance of integrating transport and logistics research with transformative service research to decrease the logistics divide and achieve more equitable urban logistics.

  • Can digitalization mitigate barriers to intermodal transport? An exploratory study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although it offers both economic and environmental advantages particularly for long-distances, intermodal transport is still not utilized effectively, and it is challenged by many barriers to its utilization. On the other hand, the transport sector is influenced by recent trends, such as digitalization, Industry 4.0 and many technological innovations are introduced, aiming to transform the way of doing business. Therefore, understanding digitalization's potential to solve the transport sector's struggle for a higher degree of integration between different modes in intermodal transport is important. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential of different digital tools in mitigating barriers for increased utilization of intermodal transport. Semi-structured interviews and a policy Delphi study combined with a brainstorming session are conducted to classify various barriers for intermodal transport under certain categories and to understand if and how selected digital tools could help to mitigate these barriers. Findings indicate that the multi-actor nature of intermodal transport networks results in varying perceptions related with digital tools and technologies. This variance acts as a hindrance for digitalization within the conservative context of transportation industry and its cost-based competition structure. Adoption by market leaders, demand from intermodal transport buyers, vertical integration in intermodal transport chains are potential mitigation factors for elimination of barriers to digitalization in intermodal transportation.

  • Exploring value-in-use of logistics services: The role of operant resources
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores how operant resources are turned into benefits by the final beneficiaries in maritime logistics networks, specifically maritime service triad composed of the shipper, carrier and logistics service provider (LSP). By doing so, the paper elaborates on the value-inuse concept at the interface between supply- and logistics networks from a transport service perspective. Results identify several operant resources that are configured by either one or all triad members for the facilitation of value-in-use. In addition, they call for extended research on the larger network and resource constellations within these networks for value co-creation and value-in-use.

  • Green Marketing: A Conceptual Framework and Suggestions for Industrial Services Marketing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Research on Developing Sustainable Value in Economics, Finance, and Marketing. - : IGI Global. - 9781466666368 ; , s. 63-85
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Due to the negative impact of globalized production and consumption on the natural environment, businesses keep facing increased pressure to eliminate their harmful processes and transform into environmentally conscious organizations. Marketing as a business function having a high interaction rate with customers and other stakeholders receives its share from this wave. Every day, more organizations become engaged in green marketing practices either by complying with laws and regulations or seizing proactive environmental marketing strategies. This chapter aims to propose a conceptual framework for green marketing by reviewing the existing green marketing and sustainable marketing literature. In addition to that, considering the less developed literature in Business-to-Business (B2B) green marketing, the chapter uses previous strategic frameworks for suggesting green marketing activities for industrial services. Logistics is selected as a specific field for the proposition of the examples. The chapter concludes with implications and further research directions.

  • Greening Logistics Centers: The Evolution of Industrial Buying Criteria Towards Green
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Asian Journal of Shipping and Logistics. - : Elsevier BV. - 2092-5212. ; 29:1, s. 59-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapidly globalizing world trade requires longer supply chains with higher attention on the environmental effects of logistics activities. Latest international conventions related with environmental regulations reinforce governments and corporations to adhere to environmental protection precautions. An effort to decrease the negative environmental effects of logistics activity is the geographical concentration of logistics companies which are called logistics centers. This study aims to provide a green industrial service buying approach for the industrial customers of logistics centers. The study combines green purchasing literature with previousely developed environmental performance indicators (EPIs) and develops a green industrial buying model for logistics centers. The model provides a framework for potential residents of a logistics center and supports their industrial buying processes. The model also serves as an input for green industrial service design in a logistics center.

  • Innovation in container shipping organisations: Impact of intra- And inter-organisational connectedness
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 8:2, s. 123-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the impacts of customer involvement, supplier involvement, employee involvement and multi-functional collaboration on the innovativeness of container shipping companies. It also considers the relationship between innovativeness and its impacts on business performance. The results of the structural equation modelling analysis used to explain these relationships indicate that container shipping companies rely on internal resources for business service innovation, while neither customer nor supplier involvement have any influence on their innovativeness. This suggests further analysis is needed concerning stakeholder inputs and innovation types with respect to different business-to-business services considering that it has positive impacts on both the financial and customer service performance of container shipping companies. With reference to these findings, managers might want to consider interdependencies between different stakeholders in collaborative innovation. Involving customers by using sales or marketing professionals as mediums might yield to better results in terms of effective customer involvement.

  • International container shipping through the Covid-19 pandemic - Disruptions from a Swedish perspective
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the onset of the pandemic in spring 2020, the Swedish shipping sector was first affected by border closures preventing passengers to use RoPax shipping and cruise ferries. There were some blank sailings but in general they kept operating to foster intra-European trade by trucks despite the missing revenues from passengers. Shipping in general was affected by port disruptions and complicated crew changes. Eventually, however, it was clear that the most dramatic disruptions on a global scale where experienced in the container segment. General media reported on delayed goods, high freight rates and, however not related to the pandemic, the Ever Given blocking the Suez Canal for a week in March 2021. Currently, there are few reports of supply chains and shipping suffering from disruptions and capacity constraints related to the pandemic. The peak in freight rates was rather replaced by depressed rates and there is a certain risk that some logisticians and supply chain managers regard the pandemic as a once-in-a-lifetime event and just want to get back to a previous behaviour seeing container shipping as a commodity with indefinite capacity at a reasonable price. Nevertheless, the war in Ukraine, the drought in the Panama Canal and the attacks by the Houthi rebels in the Red Sea create other problems for container shipping. Freight rates increase significantly, but from very low levels. The purpose of the report is to describe and analyse how international container shipping was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and other disruptions. The analysis takes a Swedish perspective on disruptions and tries to go beyond the anecdotal reporting and capture what happened and why. Container shipping is put into a context of economy, consumption, world trade, supply chains and logistics. The pandemic and more current events affecting container shipping market are described together with how shipping lines responded. A series of interviews with Swedish actors revealed how they perceived the disruptions and what countermeasures the actors have applied to mitigate the effects, their organisational learning and how they prepare for future disruptions.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Production Planning and Control. - 0953-7287 .- 1366-5871. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the increasing interest in second-life of electric vehicle batteries, the characteristics of supply chains to support such products are yet to be developed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the key supply chain characteristics required to effectively accommodate circular models for second-life electric vehicle batteries. Through a longitudinal case study, we map possible application areas and customer segments, necessary key activities, and potential actors that might emerge in future supply chains for these products. The findings are discussed in relation to product-oriented, use-oriented, and result-oriented circular models. The suggested circular models and their comparisons provide insights into how different supply chain dimensions are configured for different circular business models, and the advantages, disadvantages, and prerequisites associated by each model.

  • Sustainability Issues in Asian Fashion Supply Chains: Retailers Versus Suppliers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Fashion Supply Chain Management in Asia: Concepts, Models, and Cases. - Singapore : Springer Singapore. - 9789811322945 ; , s. 43-61
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A large part of the empirical research on sustainable supply chains takes place in fashion and apparel industry. Such a practice is not a surprise due to many scandals that society witnessed in the industry and the sense of urgency raised regarding especially the social dimension of sustainability in fashion supply chains. Although from an aggregate perspective, Asia is the fashion supplier market and Europe and USA are the fashion retail markets, with the impact of globalization one can no longer separate these two worlds. Both segments of fashion supply chains are prevalent in all markets, and they have different sustainability considerations. Despite the interest in scholarly literature on sustainability in fashion and textiles, a specific focus on the differentiated sustainability demands of the industry is lacking. This chapter makes an attempt to address this void by exploring sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) practices in fashion retailers and fashion suppliers. The chapter utilizes the triple bottom line (3BL)-based framework in order to analyze secondary data from Turkish fashion suppliers and retailers. The findings are discussed from a supply chain segmentation perspective.

  • Sustainable brand positioning by container shipping firms: Evidence from social media communications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1361-9209. ; 97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study contributes to shipping research by profiling container shipping lines with respect to their sustainability related brand positioning strategies through their social media communications. Longitudinal content analysis is combined with multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) to map branding strategies of selected lines in relation to the triple bottom line (TBL) dimensions and functional versus emotional sustainability benefits. Results indicate that shipping lines position their brands closer to either economic or environmental sustainability where a win-win focus in the messages is highly prevalent. Social sustainability constitutes a market gap and an opportunity for the sustainability positioning of these brands. Furthermore, despite a few that recognize the potential in emotional benefits, majority of the lines use functional sustainability benefits in brand positioning. Emotional sustainability benefits provide wider opportunities with respect to brand differentiation and effective customer engagement in shipping lines’ sustainability initiatives.

  • The effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the Swedish shipping industry and its resilience capabilities - Part 1 – the acute phase March 2020 – May 2021
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This prestudy aims to investigate how the Swedish shipping industry has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and how it is likely to affect shipping in the mid-term and longterm future. This report covers the effects and actions taken during the acute phase from March 2020 to May 2021 with a certain focus on the Swedish shipping companies’ resilience capabilities. In order to evaluate the role of the Swedish shipping industry in promoting strategies to mitigate coronavirus effects, the study carried out a review of Swedish newspaper articles and briefly reviewed publications in international scientific outlets. The rendering is structured along a framework of resilience capabilities. The main results suggest that different shipping segments were affected differently from the pandemic. The impact on RoRo and RoPax segment has been more severe in comparison to tanker and container segments. The frequently changing rules at international borders created a lot new responsibilities for shipping companies to manage the operations in a complying way. Existing risk mitigation capabilities in standard shipping operations have been mobilized successfully to respond to the pandemic’s acute effects. In addition, collaboration between shipping companies and government’s financial support are the most regular resilience capability factors. Furthermore, this study suggest that the shipping industry has enhanced the use of digitalization and new technologies to mitigate negative effects associated with the coronavirus pandemic situation.

  • Value co-creation in maritime logistics networks: A service triad perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Transport Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-070X .- 1879-310X. ; 84, s. 27-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Maritime logistics networks face several challenges in the supply chains they serve. Tackling those challenges requires a perspective of treating value as a co-creation through interactions amongst the key actors in the maritime logistics sector. By adopting a triadic approach, this paper explores how maritime logistics value is co-created in the service triad composed of the shipper, the logistics service provider (LSP), and the carrier (that is, the shipping line). Based on the service-dominant logic, this study identifies a number of operant resources and investigates various configurations of operant resources amongst these three players in the maritime logistics service triad. The results provide guidance for policymakers as well as firm-level decision-makers who must take an integrative approach to capture the multi-actor nature of the phenomenon. The findings may help managers understand how operationalization of their policies and decisions may affect both the type of operant resources used for value creation as well as their interdependence. Finally, studying maritime logistics value with a network approach offers opportunities for research on value and interaction between supply and transport service networks.

  • Why do some sustainable urban logistics innovations fail? The case of collection and delivery points
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combined with current trends in e-commerce, demand for urban logistic services are putting significant pressure on the environment. While some European examples show that collection-and-delivery points (CDPs) offer a sustainable solution, this is not always the case. This paper explores the mechanisms that support CDPs as sustainable urban logistics innovations while providing viable market offerings. To do so, it analyses a failure case using multiple data sources, such as a consumer survey, interviews and secondary data. Using diffusion of innovations (DoI) theory, the study explains how CDP failed in a developing market setting. Sustainable logistics innovations fail due to both supply chain-related and market-related factors. Significant factors on the supply chain side include network structures, IT integration and diverse value propositions while the market side includes consumer market characteristics, regulations, security issues and convenience of existing alternatives. Important factors for success include looking for horizontal collaboration opportunities, building strong network partnerships with customers and distribution channel actors. CDPs should be positioned as sustainable solutions and complemented with other urban logistics services to diversify the value proposition.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 12:4, s. 367-397
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of this study is to reveal the role and contribution of Industry 4.0 in the value chain of seaports. It first reviews the literature to identify value chain activities in the port industry. It then explores the Industry 4.0 applications utilised by ports through content analysis of the websites of ten major innovative seaports. Seven main technological characteristics of Industry 4.0, namely digitalisation, autonomisation, transparency, mobility, modularisation, network-collaboration and socialising, are used as the main research main categories. The findings show that ports engage with Industry 4.0 in four different modules namely port community systems, cyber-physical systems, internet of things and big data. These four modules enable ports to achieve cost leadership advantages in their quest for competitiveness. To achieve differentiation, on the other hand, they need to increase connectivity with customers and stakeholders through communication channels such as social media.

  • Assessing the eco-efficiency benefits of empty container repositioning strategies via dry ports
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part D. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1361-9209 .- 1879-2340. ; 120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trade imbalances and global disturbances generate mismatches in the supply and demand of empty containers (ECs) that elevate the need for empty container repositioning (ECR). This research investigated dry ports as a potential means to minimize EC movements, and thus reduce costs and emissions. We assessed the environmental and economic effects of two ECR strategies via dry ports—street turns and extended free temporary storage—considering different scenarios of collaboration between shipping lines with different levels of container substitution. A multi-paradigm simulation combined agent-based and discrete-event modelling to represent flows and estimate kilometers travelled, CO2 emissions, and costs resulting from combinations of ECR strategies and scenarios. Full ownership container substitution combined with extended free temporary storage at the dry port (FTDP) most improved ECR metrics, despite implementation challenges. Our results may be instrumental in increasing shipping lines’ collaboration while reducing environmental impacts in up to 32 % of the inland ECR emissions. © 2023 The Author(s)

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - 0885-8624. ; 38:13, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to explore how a start-up entering maritime logistics networks (MLNs) in the container shipping industry integrates resources underlying value cocreation patterns in these networks. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a single case study of a technological start-up, providing tracking, tracing and other information services to MLN members using internet-based software. An interorganizational theory perspective informs the case study to unveil the resource integration for value cocreation in the network. Findings: The start-up holds multiple resource interaction roles and the start-up’s involvement enables the creation of new knowledge resources, which facilitate new revenue streams and manage resource dependencies. Hence, the findings indicate that the start-up changes value cocreation patterns in the network by reconfiguring and integrating existing resources so that the service is customized for various customers, including shippers and freight forwarders. Practical implications: The results provide insights about how technological start-ups can unlock resources within MLNs. Originality/value: The study extends previous studies on resource roles in business networks and shows how start-ups can perform multiple roles simultaneously within these networks. In addition, the study contributes to the literature by studying information and knowledge as resources configured in different ways in a unique network setting.

  • Drivers of and Barriers against Market Orientation: A Study on Turkish Container Ports
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Maritime Economics and Logistics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1479-2931 .- 1479-294X. ; 21:2, s. 278-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Privatization transforms the operations-focused and stakeholder-independent approach of container port management into a competition and market-oriented perspective. This integrates a marketing philosophy with the management of the overall port organization. In this way, ports become more responsive to market demand and create profitable and sustainable customer value, so as to achieve competitive advantage. This change is caused both by the evolving port governance systems, as well as by changing market demand, requiring ports to respond to the needs of the supply chains they serve. An increasingly prevalent logistics perspective in maritime transport is accelerating pressure on ports—and other members of service supply chains—encouraging them to adopt market-oriented strategies. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to discover both the drivers and the barriers that container ports face while adopting market-oriented strategies. Taking Turkish container ports as the main unit of analysis, this article combines the Delphi method with fuzzy analytic hierarchy processing to identify the prioritized opinions of industry stakeholders. The results indicate that customer relations are perceived to be very important for container ports, in terms of communicating value-added services, and even more important than economic concerns or possessing market knowledge. Often, however, ports define their customers within a limited scope, and fail to adopt a supply chain perspective. Therefore, new strategies, such as market resegmentation including support service providers, or evaluating end-customer demands by analyzing supply chains that include port services, should be developed to eliminate the prioritized barriers. Drivers, such as collecting market information, or building market-oriented teams, can be used more effectively to make market orientation a new competition tool for all ports. Finally, our results provide new variables to scholars studying port marketing and put forward recommendations for testing the relationships between these variables.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Management. - 0957-4093 .- 1758-6550. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Sustainability continues to be put forth as a strategic priority. However, sustainability efforts are often deemphasized for short-term profitability. This study explores the nuances in managerial decision-making related to adopting sustainability initiatives within food supply chains in an emerging economy. We identify a complex interaction between sustainability efforts and risk mitigation. We derive a model to explain conflicting company goals, managerial decisions and system design. Design/methodology/approach: We followed an exploratory research design with an inductive approach. We analyzed data from semi-structured interviews with 29 companies representing different tiers in Turkish food supply chains. We refined and validated the interview findings through a focus group with nine senior managers. We conducted open, focused and theoretical coding in an iterative and reflective manner to analyze the data and derive our results. Findings: From the data, three themes emerged, indicating that managers are pursuing different, often conflicting, goals concerning value creation, risk management and sustainability performance. Managers identified and commented on new risks brought on by sustainability initiatives. These sustainability-induced risks were seen as a threat to operational performance, a driver of increased costs and a negative impact on product quality and delivery performance. Trade-offs across operating, sustainability and risk management systems create transformational tension that confounds the sustainability adoption decision-making process. Originality/value: The data from the study was contrasted with a theoretical framework derived from systems theory, goal-setting theory of motivation and the theory of planned behavior. We identified four distinct decision paths that managers pursue. Increased awareness of transformational tension and how it influences managerial decision-making can enhance strategic sustainability system design and initiative success.

  • To manage or not to manage: Sustainability-risk interaction in the supply chain
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Escalating sustainability scandals that are triggered by ignorance, cost-orientation, lack of knowledge or misconduct at supplier levels, are putting pressure on focal companies to manage sustainability risks in a better way. This study aims to explore and understand the nuances in sustainability related risk management behaviour within supply chains by using theory of planned behaviour. Preliminary findings indicate that great effort is spent on controlling efficiency. However, the case is quite nuanced when it comes to social and environmental issues. Distinct decision patterns illustrate a framework for managerial behaviour for managing sustainability in supply chains.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 49:4, s. 398-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the sustainability of waste supply chains regarding the energy efficiency of first-mile waste collection systems and quality of waste. Roles of actors in the waste service triad are considered, particularly focusing on households. Design/methodology/approach: Primary data are collected from respondents including municipality officers, waste service providers (WSPs) and households through brainstorming sessions, semi-structured interviews, site visits and a focus group. Secondary data are collected from official reports for validation. Findings: Findings reveal tension between the energy efficiency of waste collection logistics and the quality of waste collected. Households are co-producers of logistic services providing important inputs in the form of sorting and moving waste and raw materials into new cycles of goods circulating in logistics systems. Other actors in the logistics service triad are the municipality as regulator and the WSP acting as a reverse-logistics service provider. Practical implications: This study provides principles for policymakers and practitioners to evaluate the energy efficiency of waste management options, considering the quality of waste. Also, “logistics services” and “quality of waste” as concepts might provoke new thoughts on how to involve the consumer in resource recovery. Originality/value: Few studies have focused on the end-consumer’s role in waste supply chains. By considering waste as a resource and the consumer as the supplier of this input, this study provides a new way to think about logistics services for waste collection.

  • Logistics service triads for household waste: the case of consumers as co-producers of sustainability
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose In this study, we sought to explore the sustainability of waste supply chains with respect to energy efficiency of first-mile waste collection systems and quality of waste. In particular, we sought to understand the co-producing roles of different actors in the waste service triad, ranging from waste services providers to the individual household. Design/methodology/approach The study included multiple sources of evidence: data during brainstorming sessions, semi-structured interviews, and site visits with officials from a municipality in Sweden and its waste service provider. These data were triangulated with that from a focus group with households members and analysed based on the different waste collection systems. Findings The findings reveal the tension between energy efficiency of waste collection logistics and the quality of the waste. Consumers, as co-producers of logistic services for effective of sorting and moving waste, may provide input to improve energy efficiency and quality. Practical implications This study provides principles for policymakers and practitioners to evaluate energy efficiency of waste management options with consideration for the quality of waste. In addition, ‘quality of waste’ as a concept might provoke new thoughts on how to involve the consumer in the recovery of resources. Original/value Few studies have focused on the end consumer’s role in waste supply chains. By considering waste as resource (raw material input) to the supply chain and the consumer as the supplier of this input, this study provides a new way of thinking about waste collection.

  • Value-Added Services at Dry Ports: Balancing the Perspectives of Different Stakeholders
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transportation Journal. - : The Pennsylvania State University Press. - 0041-1612 .- 2157-328X. ; 60:4, s. 406-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate which of dry ports’ services generate the greatest positive impact on stakeholders and their objectives. Stakeholders identified from the literature are the dry ports, the dry port’s municipality/region, the seaport, shippers, shipping lines, rail operators, and road operators. A method based on multi-actor multi-criteria analysis is applied to allow the evaluation of different scenarios considering the objectives and opinions of multiple stakeholders. The findings show that the basic services of the dry ports studied are crucial to establishing initial operations. Expanding the service portfolio by adding a wider range of customer-oriented value-added services generates extra economic and environmental benefits for stakeholders. The results expand the understanding on stakeholder benefits from the diversified range of dry port services, while the inclusion of multiple stakeholders in the analysis acknowledges the heterogeneity in stakeholder perceptions. Finally, this methodology enables the creation of an extensive set of criteria and indicators for dry port evaluations.

  • Customer Segmentation for Marinas: Evaluating Marinas as Destinations
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tourism Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0261-5177. ; 56, s. 156-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marinas are a significant part of marine tourism activity and they are complex organizations having a highly heterogeneous business structure with many different companies trying to provide the various services that altogether compromise the so called "marina services". From this perspective, they can be described as destinations and analyzed with a destination marketing perspective. This study aims to conduct a benefit segmentation approach to marinas as destinations, in order to identify the existing market segments based on yachters' expectations from them. Data were collected from 261 yachters of seven marinas located on Turkey's Aegean coast in 2014. The five identified segments are labelled as socially oriented, indifferent, supportive facilities oriented, service and prestige oriented, and touristic attractiveness oriented clusters. Clusters are validated by nine independent variables that define their socio-demographic characteristics and individual motivations for traveling to marinas. The results offer important implications both for practitioners and scholars.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapidly evolving needs of shippers, rising competition, advancement in digital technologies and a quest to increase cost and operational efficiencies are all driving the digital transformation of maritime logistics. However, in contrast to other industries such as media, telecom, banking, retail and even other traffic modes, the often family-controlled and network-centric liner shipping industry has historically been conservative in adopting innovations; hence, it is still far behind in embracing digitalization. Based on semi-structured interviews with senior executives of liner shipping companies, this study explores the current digital maturity levels, the opportunities provided by digitalization and the underlying challenges that hinder its implementation in the liner shipping segment within the larger maritime logistics industry and identifies the essential leading strategies of digitalization in this segment. The digital maturity categories applied to liner shipping provide an opportunity for practitioners in this industry to evaluate their business functions’ digital maturity levels. Furthermore, based on interview data, digital transformation for the maritime logistics industry is defined, as well as 9 major barriers and 19 different pathways to digital transformation are identified. Understanding the key challenges and success factors in the industry is a key to approaching digitalization problems and developing a healthy digital transformation process. © 2022 The Authors

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Publishing. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 54:2, s. 163-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper’s purpose is to explore flexibility-based countermeasures that enable actors in maritime supply chains to mitigate the effects of disruptions with different characteristics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with shipping lines, shippers, forwarders and ports. Data on the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects and countermeasures were collected and compared with data regarding the 2016–2017 Gothenburg port conflict. Spatial, capacity, service and temporal flexibility emerged as the primary countermeasures, whilst important characteristics of disruptions were geographical spread, duration, uncertainty, criticality, the element of surprise and intensity. Spatial flexibility was exercised in both disruptions by switching to alternative ports. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring capacity flexibility included first removing and then adding vessels. Shipping lines exercising service flexibility prioritised certain cargo, which made the spot market uncertain and reduced flexibility for forwarders, importers and exporters that changed carriers or traffic modes. Experience with disruptions meant less surprise and better preparation for spatial flexibility. Comparing flexibility-based measures in a pandemic versus port conflict provides insights into the important characteristics of disruptions and the relevance of mitigation strategies. The resilience of maritime supply chains, although underexamined compared with manufacturing supply chains, is essential for maintaining global supply chain flows.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inland waterway transportation (IWT) in Sweden could be a substitute for road transports with the prospects of improving the environmental performance. Sweden currently has no systematic strategies or policies for transports on inland waterways (IWW), and despite available capacity the waterways are barely utilized. In the Netherlands, for example, the IWW capacity is embedded in the transport system and utilized to a large extent. For a successful modal shift it is important to understand the drivers and barriers for the shift and develop strategies to leverage the drivers and mitigate the barriers. This study aims to identify drivers and barriers for IWT based on successful benchmark cases in the Netherlands. Furthermore, based on the learning from these benchmarks the study aims to point out strategic actions for Sweden regarding IWT. The data for this study was collected from IWT organizations, shippers and local administrations in the Netherlands. The results showed that main drivers for IWT are congestion relief, cost reduction and lower environmental impact. On the other hand, main barriers are slow pace of development, high investment costs and poor hinterland connectivity. For a successful modal shift in Sweden, it is crucial to prepare governmental support, a change in stakeholders’ mindset, decisive attitude to modal shift process and a strong long-term perspective.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transport Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-070X .- 1879-310X. ; 109, s. 24-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the importance of incorporating online home delivery services (OHDS) into the concept of accessibility and marginalization. The authors propose a method to quantify access to OHDS and assess levels of inequalities in access to OHDS using data from OHDS providers in the pharmaceutical and food sectors, as well as from transport operators delivering parcels. The Västra Götaland Region in the West coast of Sweden is used as a case study. The results show significant inequalities in access to OHDS. Moreover, there are segments of population under a compound marginalization during the COVID-19 pandemic due to (i) limited accessibility to OHDS services, (ii) high incidence of COVID-19 cases in their area that makes physical visits to a store a risk activity, and (iii) high vulnerability (e.g., high share of individuals older than 65). These results reveal a need for the public sector to prioritize innovations in services that target specific clusters of the population that are vulnerable and marginalized, but also shows the imminent risk for some of these segments during the pandemic.

  • Empty Container Repositioning
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Although some movements of empty containers are needed due to imbalances between inbound and outbound goods flows in specific geographical areas, the transport of empty containers could be performed more efficiently. This report outlines results from the project “Increasing transport efficiency through reducing positioning of empty containers” performed during 2020-2023 by RISE and Chalmers, and financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. The purpose of the project was to contribute to increasing transport efficiency by understanding how empty container repositioning can be reduced and made more efficient in the Swedish transport system. To provide increased understanding regarding current practices and possible improvement areas, the report describes empty repositioning of containers in the inland container transport, and highlights drivers and barriers to minimize and make empty repositioning more efficient. Data on empty container movements in ports and by truck provide increased understanding of the current state. However, available data only offer partial views of empty container movements. Therefore, an empty trip model was constructed to help understand the proportion of containers that are transported empty between various origin-destination pairs, drawing on the Swedish road goods transport data from Trafikanalys. Several recommendations are made for how to improve data on empty container movements, for example differentiating between 20 and 40 feet containers. Also, this report details strategies for either reducing the empty container repositioning or making it more efficient within the national transport system, with a focus on: a) increased reutilization of containers and b) an increased share of rail compared to truck transport. Reutilization involves matching import and export containers to a larger degree, for example facilitated by extended storage of containers, and also how demands in various regions can be matched more efficiently, where some geographical areas are import dominated and others export dominated. The improvement potential in terms of cost and emissions have been calculated, simulating transport data in specific case studies. One simulation concerned reducing empty container repositioning locally, comparing the current situation with improvements in terms of street turns and extended storage given different collaboration levels. The extended storage scenario delivered the best results, as it significantly increased the likelihood of finding export cargo for an emptied import container. Another simulation considered empty container movements between Swedish inland terminals, identifying a large potential for both reutilization locally and triangulation between terminals compared to the current situation. The report further outlines the outcome of a Multi-Actor-Multi-Criteria-Analysis, where opportunities to reduce empty container repositioning in the hinterland of a port were considered from several stakeholders’ perspectives: shipping lines, transport operators, inland terminals, forwarders, ports and cargo owners. The scenarios evaluated were a) Time Flexibility, where additional days were allowed to find matching export cargo for an emptied import container, b) Container Sharing, where implications of allowing matching of containers of shipping lines in the same alliance were explored, and c) Data Sharing, where increased transparency regarding containers available for export in the inland was explored. The stakeholders preferred different scenarios, and details explaining their reasoning is provided. Drawing on the insights regarding current practices and possible improvement areas, recommendations to industry and authorities are provided. Widespread collaboration between stakeholders is needed, even so, all stakeholders can take action to create better conditions for empty container repositioning. Smarter tools for planning is one example.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Social Responsibility Education Across Europe. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319267166 ; , s. 1-28
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a developing country that has experienced severe economic, social, and environmental conditions due to the absence of institutional supports and arrangements, Turkey urgently needs to adopt a new business paradigm that is built on a strong commitment to sustainable development with the integration of diverse stakeholders. In doing so, the concept of social responsibility can provide a viable framework at the individual, organizational, and national levels. Springing the new ideas and conveying these ideas into the real systems though their students, the universities have critical roles in such a large-scale transformation of individuals, organizations, and nations towards sustainable and socially responsible philosophy. Despite its increasing importance over the business sector and academic community, the nature, structure, and implications of social responsibility education has not properly explored in Turkish context. The purpose of this study is to give an overall profile of social responsibility education at Turkish universities, and then provide the quality and quantity of social responsibility education at Yasar University as one of the best cases in Turkey. The results of the survey which was conducted on 239 students at Yasar University reveal that when the students view social responsibility as a critical element of doing business, their attitudes as consumers and prospective employees significantly positively changes towards socially responsible organizations.

  • A Longitudinal Study on Newcomers’ Perception of Organisational Culture
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Education and Training. - 0040-0912. ; 57:2, s. 130-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse how newcomers’ perceptions of organisational culture can change over time. The study tries to address whether initial working experience changes newcomers’ perceptions about the ideal organisational culture, and whether these perceptions converge with those of their supervisors. Design/methodology/approach – A longitudinal survey was carried out on a sample of undergraduate students to measure shifts in their perceptions of organisational culture over time. In order to interpret the results in terms of actual organisational culture, a survey was also conducted with the students’ immediate supervisors. Findings – Applying a factor analytic procedure to the aggregate sample of study, the items of an existing scale were reduced to a six-dimensional structure. Based on the results of statistical analysis, the study revealed that initial working experience might affect students’ perception of organisational culture and make these perceptions converge with those of their immediate managers. Specifically, the students’ perceptions about the importance of stability and success orientation dimensions changed over time. By the end of the process, they found supportiveness and people orientation more important, similarly to their supervisors. Practical implications – This study reveals the critical role of supervisors in the transmission of organisational culture to newcomers. Additionally, it demonstrates the importance of work-based learning for acquiring work-related and technical beliefs, as well as obtaining initial ideas about the culture of a real organisation. Originality/value – The study can specifically contribute to the growing literature on organisational culture by demonstrating the impact of initial working experience on newcomers’ perceptions, and how they adopt the culture of their new organisations to become a part of this culture.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Technological Forecasting and Social Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-1625. ; 119, s. 98-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social innovation (SI) is a complex construct that is lacking a unifying paradigm in social sciences. However, together with the recent attention towards social change, it requires a theoretical perspective that analyzes the construct within its institutional context (IC) without forgetting that the term is socially constructed. This current study aims to contribute to the literature by exploring and describing the inter-linkages between institutional voids (IVs)/institutional supports (ISs) perspectives and SI process by positioning the actor as the catalyzer and the change-agent. The study tries to explore if existing IVs or supports, which are embedded in social-welfare, commercial or public-sector logics, stimulate SI and result in the development of these ideas. The research setting is deliberately selected as a developing country that deals with plenty of IVs and suffers from the lack of ISs; a research setting that exhibits a high degree of heterogeneity and a low institutionalization level. The results indicate that IVs stimulate SIs mostly at the incremental and institutional level where IS is inadequate. The heterogeneity of IVs and a low degree of institutionalization result in the heterogeneity of actions undertaken for SI. Implications for practitioners and scholars are recommended at the end of the paper.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics. - 1741-802X .- 1477-9048. ; 8:2, s. 137-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The responsibilities of organisations to their stakeholders have gained a strategic importance over the last decades. Following the literature on stakeholder management, a firm's stakeholders can be grouped into three classes on the basis of their positions in organisational environment, as internal, direct and indirect stakeholders. Whereas internal and direct stakeholders attract increasing attention from corporate managers, indirect stakeholders have usually been neglected by the practitioners. The purpose of this study is to provide an ethical approach on how a business organisation can conceptualise its responsibilities to indirect stakeholders and suggest strategic steps to adopt this approach for long-term competitive advantage. In tandem with its conceptual framework, the study classifies existing implications of responsible corporate action towards indirect stakeholders among cost leadership, differentiation and focus strategies.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-2373. ; 32:5, s. 837-849
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent decades, the fast fashion industry has been characterized by widespread operations across both developing and developed countries. Due to the economic, social and environmental problems in developing countries, companies increasingly focus on sustainability and try to ensure the same quality and standards in working and production conditions throughout their supply chains. Although the tension in the exchange of resources between developing and developed countries lies at the heart of current sustainability activities, what these companies are actually doing to manage their supply chain has not yet been explored in depth in the literature. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Seuring and Müller (2008), the current study attempts to fill this void by conceptually mapping the current situation of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) in the fast fashion industry by analysing reports from 9 companies that use the same reporting guidelines. The results of the study reveal that these companies focus significantly on supplier compliance with their code of conduct, employing further monitoring and auditing activities to prevent production problems in developing countries, improve overall supply chain performance and set sustainability criteria for their suppliers.

  • Energy efficiency in logistics through service modularity: the case of household waste
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 51:1, s. 76-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Service modularity promotes efficiency at the provider end of the supply chain and customisation at the customer end. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how logistics service modularity contributes to sustainable development through the means of energy efficiency. This is analysed in the context of logistics services for household waste collection. Design/methodology/approach: A single case study methodology with embedded units is adopted where semi-structured interviews were conducted with a waste service provider (WSP) and buyers (municipalities) in Sweden, focussing on five types of logistics services for waste collection: collection of food and residual waste at apartments and one-family houses, as well as collection of gardening waste. Service modules are identified and analysed by blueprinting the service. Findings: The findings show different service modules – standardised or customised – and their contribution to sustainable development operationalised through energy efficiency. Principles for an energy-centric service design are proposed. Research limitations/implications: The research is limited to Swedish household waste collection setting. Promising efficiency through standardisation, logistics service modularity has a potential to improve energy efficiency as well. This neglected link between sustainability and service modularity offers fruitful research avenues. Practical implications: This research is of practical relevance to waste logistics service providers and the municipality by suggesting principles for energy-centric service design. The service blueprint enables using logistics service modularity for improving energy efficiency in different logistics service settings. Originality/value: This research incorporates an environmentally sustainable development perspective into logistics service modularity and contributes to the literature by exploring how energy efficiency is improved by modular design of logistics services. Furthermore, the study is one of the first to use service blueprinting to analyse logistics service modularity, providing a methodological contribution to that field in general and logistics in particular.

  • Logistics service providers’ energy efficiency initiatives for environmental sustainability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Management. - 0957-4093 .- 1758-6550. ; 33:5, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper discusses logistics service providers’ (LSPs’) energy efficiency initiatives for sustainable development, both from an evolutionary perspective and based on a framework consisting of actions, processes (i.e. at the operations interface) and services (i.e. at the customer interface). Design/methodology/approach – Following a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with sustainability managers at LSPs and the data were analysed via inductive coding. Based on the results and the literature, the authors developed a maturity model for LSPs’ transitions to environmental sustainability. Findings – LSPs’ sustainable development occurs via operational processes, services at the customer interface, and actions that support those processes and services. Energy efficiency efforts are characterised by process depth that helps LSPs to align with their customers’ energy efficiency improvement processes. While services related to energy efficiency connect LSPs and their customers, actions in support vary depending on the logistics activities in which LSPs participate. Research limitations/implications – Further research is needed to test and verify the maturity model and to clarify the interdependency of its three dimensions. Practical implications – By categorising energy efficiency initiatives and proposing a maturity model for LSPs’ sustainable development via energy efficiency, the authors have developed a tool for logistics actors to assess their progress towards improved sustainability. Originality/value – The paper contributes to the literature by providing a three-pillar framework to understand the sustainability transitions of LSPs through energy efficiency. Developing a maturity model using this framework also contributes to the literature with an approach to assess sustainability advancement in the logistics industry.
