    • Presentation of a research project, grounded on perspectives and concepts mainly from reception theory (Iser, Jauß, Stierle), cultural sociology (Bourdieu’s habitus), and translation theory (Lefevere, Pym). The procect aims at contributing to the know-ledge and development of theoretical and practical approaches to literary fiction in aca-demic teaching situations. The issue is how to teach the art of reading the literary text as literature—as a literary artefact and an aesthetic process – and not primarily as an il-lustration of cultural habits and ideolgies, or as didactic mediation (as is too often the case). The project starts from the idea of the literary text as a double-sided phenomenon, wavering between recognition and estrangement—which is what the title of the project alludes to. On the one hand the literary text appeals to the reader’s competence of recognizing the repertoire of the text within the current culture. Examples of ’recognizable’ elements are plot-types, motifs, generic variations, and so on. But on the other hand, what is specifically literary in the literary text is precisely the existence of estranging devices that prevent immediate recognition and desautomatize habitual ways of reading. Literary estrangement means breaking the reader’s horizon of expectations and obstructing the reading, but it also means pointing to a new frame of reference and alternative ways of seeing and understanding the text. Thus, literary estrangement both prevents spontaneous reading and promotes an attentive reading with new dimensions of perceiving, and also of reflecting on the text and the problematics displayed in it. Thus, basic assumptions are that literary texts are cultural meeting places, and that literature, as a cultural tool, desautomatizes language (Sklovskij, Lotman). This means that literature, in breaking the flow of habitual unreflective reading, also provides unique opportunities to introduce the reader to unfamiliar values, ideas and modes of thinking. Literature in this way mediates human experience from different times, cultures and societies. The project studies teaching situations in academic contexts, textual strategies in hand-books, anthologies, and literary works, and reading strategies – actual encounters between student-readers and texts. Thus, how to improve an attentive and reflective way of reading in academic teaching will be investigated. To that end textual strategies will be studied from a theoretical point of view as well as and academic student’s actual reception of them in practical teaching situations. Also how translations of literary texts affect the literary strategies will be studied, especially the interaction between devices of recognition / estrangement and their actual reception. Finally, translation in itself exemplifies a reception of the literary text translated: it is in itself a reader’s response to that text.

  • Ambiguity Translated for Children: Andersen's "Den standhaftige Tinsoldat" as a case in point

    • This article addresses ambiguity in translations for children. 'Ambiguity', here understood as something that allows for more than one interpretation, is supposed to be critical in translation for children as it clashes with some mediators' ideas of what children's literature is or ought to be. Hans Christian Andersen's tale of "Den standhaftige Tinsoldat" ['The steadfast tin soldier'] and a sample of twenty-four translations thereof (twelve into Swedish and twelve into Spanish) are used to explore different ways that ambiguity is translated for children. The objective is to determine if and how the tale's ambiguities are manipulated in the various translations, and thus to initiate a theoretical discussion of ambiguity in translation for children. A difference is established between 'textually resolvable' and 'textually irresolvable' ambiguities and these two kinds of ambiguity are found to be treated differently in the analyzed sample of translations.

    • Adults as well both can and do read children's literature, either together with children or without them, just like children and young adults can read diverse literary materials targeting adults. The origins of children's literature are often traced back to early modern educational books for boys and girls that taught religious virtues and good manners to the upper classes. Some kinds of topics are by many adults deemed to be especially difficult for children to deal with, such as books culminating in a suicide, since such a denouement would leave the reader without any hope for a change for the better. After some initial reflections on the translation of children's literature as a performative and multimodal practice, the chapter presents a series of examples of typical interventions that take place in the translation of children's literature regarding violence, religion, racism and sexuality.

  • Conceptions of Literature in University Language Courses

    • In this article we set out to explore and discuss reasons for reading literary texts in university curricula of foreign languages. Our analysis is based on 2 sources of information: 16 syllabi of Spanish as a foreign language and a questionnaire in which 11 university instructors teaching these syllabi express their intentions. We point to a number of risks when emphasis is predominantly placed on instrumental goals such as acquisition of vocabulary and grammar or cultural knowledge. We suggest, instead, that the literary modules within language curricula should formulate their own specific goals. Rather than privileging linguistic and cultural competences to be trained, the literary modules could, for example, raise students' awareness of the facts that there are many ways of reading a text but that interpretation nevertheless remains a historically situated and constrained activity.

    • This articles examines how the interaction between the verbal and the visual relates to the reader-oriented strategy “ambiguity” in eighteen translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” as compared to the source text. The translators’ and the illustrators’ different decisions regarding the textual elements that lead to ambiguity are compared to each other in an attempt to uncover the mechanics of ambiguity at work in the different translations. Theoretically, the article is based on Iser’s (1978) textual approach towards the act of reading, and Oittinen’s (2000) work on the visual and the verbal in translation for children.

    • This chapter reviews key texts on literary translation ethics from the last fifty years to find tips that may be useful for practitioners and students when facing ethical dilemmas such as whether racist or sexist expressions may be modified, if jokes, cultural allusions, and unintelligible passages may be skipped, whether it is ethical to use phrases from the source language to signal a text’s foreign origins – or, conversely, whether it is defendable to standardize a character’s dialect, or turn poetry and rhymes into prose. Should obvious translation errors be corrected in later editions? Is it ethically acceptable to reuse the words and phrasings of a previous translation? The chapter points out that recent research often examines more complex translation situations such as retranslation and indirect translation and that such studies typically bring attention to ethical issues. This is not surprising since they involve more agents, texts, and cultures that can be ethically wronged. It is concluded that translators who translate both the surface level of the text and its deeper levels, with attention to and empathy for the text as well as for the people and the cultures involved, are likely to translate in a more ethical way.

  • The impact of awards on the translation and circulation of children's literature into semi-peripheral and peripheral languages

    • The article sheds light on the impact of awards on the translation of children's literature into semi-peripheral and peripheral languages and its transnational circulation. In relation to literature for adults, it has been argued that awards instigate both translation and circulation. This article examines whether a similar claim holds true also for children's literature translated into semi-peripheral and peripheral languages, taking Swedish and Maltese as respective examples. First, we examine to what extent laureates of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing (1956-2018) have been translated into Swedish and Maltese. Then, we turn to circulation and examine the availability of the laureates' work in the target contexts, looking at what may currently be acquired from libraries and online bookshops in Sweden and Malta. Contrary to previous claims made regarding literary awards, our findings show that this major award for children's literature did not decisively stimulate translation neither into the semi-peripheral language Swedish nor the peripheral Maltese. With regard to circulation, however, the findings provide further support for claims made in the literature, since the work by the laureates circulate widely both in Sweden and Malta.

    • This chapter focuses on a few selected translations of Borges literary prose, showing that Borges translators have chosen different paths, and that these are not always reconcilable one with the other. In the story, a Chinese agent working for the Germans in World War I is about to kill a random British citizen named Albert. All the versions, along with scholarly studies on Borges, talks with friends and colleagues, and research visits to the Centro Cultural Borges and the Museo Borges in Buenos Aires are sure to have influenced literature present idea of Borges' literary heritage. Butler and Boldy are clearly discussing the same story and the same sentences here, but the difference between their two readings is striking. Innovative metafiction was also changed into more traditional forms in other Swedish translations of the work of Latin American writers in the 1960s.

    • Har översättnintgsvetenskapen något värde för samhället? Det finns åtminstone två sätt att närma sig den frågan. Svaret skulle kunna vara en reflektion över forskningens relevans för översättare och andra som jobbar med översättningar. Man kan då tänka sig att översättningsforskning har, eller i alla fall borde ha, ett värde för den typ av problem som översättare brottas med när de översätter, samt översättarutbildningar, översätningskvalite, översättares effektivitet, utveckling av programvara, uppdragsgivarnas förståelse av uppdraget, lexikon och andra verktyg. Men svaret skulle också kunna gå i en annan riktning, greppa bredare om man så vill, rakt in i de stora samhällsfrågorna som klimatförändringar, krig, social och global ojämlikhet, trafficking och den pandemi som pågår i skrivande stund, sommaren 2020. I denna text kommer jag främst behandla frågan om översättningsforskningens eventuella värde för samhället ur detta senare perspektiv.

    • The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

    • Résumé : Le roman La délicatesse de David Foenkinos, comme son adaptation au grand écran, comporte un grand nombre de clichés éculés sur la Suède et les Suédois. Dans cet article, nous étudions de plus près les réactions du public suédois face à cette image stéréotypée. Un public suédois aura, cela va de soi, une toute autre « pré-représentation » de l’identité suédoise qu’un public français et c’est la raison pour laquelle il est intéressant d’essayer de savoir si les critiques et blogueurs suédois que nous avons consultés acceptent une image stéréotypée d’eux-mêmes ou si, et dans le cas échéant, comment, ils s’y opposent. D’une part, il existe des critiques qui apprécient la manière dont l’auteur se moque du personnage principal, un Suédois dépressif et maladroit. D’autre part, nous retrouvons des avis extrêmement négatifs face à ce portrait peu flatteur de la Suède. Certains s’opposent également à ce qu’une relation entre deux personnes qui, à première vue, n’ont rien en commun, soit une Française élégante et un Suédois peu attirant, surprenne et choque autant. Pour un nombre significatif de blogueurs ayant rédigé un compte rendu du livre, le thème suédois ne semble cependant pas, en lui-même, très important, ce qui n’est peut-être pas vraiment surprenant dans la mesure où les léments ‘suédois’ servent avant tout à marquer la différence entre les deux personnages principaux. On remarque néanmoins que les lecteurs et spectateurs suédois cherchent à savoir pourquoi l’auteur se sert de ces lieux communs même lorsqu’eux-mêmes pensent qu’ils ne correspondent pas à la réalité. Mot-clés : réception, clichés français sur la Suède, David Foenkinos French Clichés about Sweden – A Study of the Reception in Sweden of La delicatesse de David Foenkinos and its Adaptation as a Film Summary: The French author David Foenkinos’ novel La délicatesse (Delicacy) and its subsequent film version, starring Audrey Tautou and François Damiens, frequently stereotypes Sweden and Swedes. In this article, we examine the reception in Sweden of both the Swedish translation and the movie. Since Swedish readers and film viewers have other preconceptions about what it means to be Swedish than a French audience does, it is interesting to shed light on whether Swedish critics and bloggers accept the national stereotype about themselves, or whether they reject it (and in that case how). Though some Swedish critics appreciate the way that Foenkinos chose to portray the male protagonist as a depressive, clumsy Swede, many reviewers fail to understand why such an unflattering portrayal of their country should be funny. They also question why a relationship between two people who at first sight do not seem to have much in common (an elegant French woman and an unattractive Swedish man) should be so controversial. Moreover, many blog Reviews do not mention the Swedish element of the story at all. Although this might not be all that surprising, given that the main function of the Swedish theme is to increase the differences between the lead characters, Swedish readers and filmgoers are nevertheless interested in learning more about why the author used these allegedly inaccurate clichés.     • Although previous research on ethics demonstrates growing awareness that many agents or subjectivities besides translators and interpreters are involved in translation and interpreting processes, the consequences of this multiplicity for thinking about ethics in translation still lacks focused attention. In this introduction, we show how this special issue, titled Voice, Ethics and Translation, reduces this gap by highlighting the concept of voice and the idea that the world of translating and interpreting consists of many voices ‘having a say’. This carries with it the potential for negotiation, conflict and dissent regarding what constitutes good and bad translation and interpreting practice. The nine contributions discuss questions such as whose voices are involved in ethical negotiations, what is the nature of these negotiations, who has more power to have their voices heard, and whether translators and interpreters should be given more trust and responsibility. As evinced by these various contributions, a consensus seems to be emerging to the effect that rather than blindly following outside authorities in ethical matters, translators and interpreters need to be encouraged to independently reflect on a variety of voices on ethics and be actively conscientious and responsible in actual translation and interpreting situations.

  • The Taming of a Viking : August Strindberg, Translation and Post-Victorian Censorship

    • This dissertation studies August Strindberg’s two-volume collection of short stories, Giftas (1884, 1886) and its first English translation, Ellie Schleussner’s Married (1913). The purpose is to demonstrate that Married deviates from the original in many ways, primarily on the very aspects that were generally associated with the work. The study also analyses and discusses possible influences on the translation outcome and its reception.The dissertation makes clear how the traditional image of Strindberg as a provocative author and a persuasive debater has almost disappeared in Married due to culturally motivated translational choices and the need to avoid state censorship, which could also explain the weak reception of Married. The hypothesis is that British readers were disappointed as Strindberg did not live up to the image they had expected to find. As there was state censorship of “obscene” publications in both Britain and the USA at the time Married was published, other Strindberg works saw similar changes in English translation. The conclusion is that a combination of these phenomena may help explain Strindberg’s relatively belated entry into the Anglo-American canon.The dissertation is carried out within the frames of translation studies, which is characterized by being multidisciplinary. The theoretical frame is based on descriptive translation studies (Gideon Toury) and polysystem theory (Itamar Even-Zohar), but it also incorporates perspectives from reception theory, the notion of multiple translatorship and imagology. Thus, it has both a source- and target-oriented focus. Of special relevance to the thesis are also the concepts of habitus, borrowed from the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the panopticon effect, as described by Michel Foucault.Through some key concepts and perspectives borrowed from actor-network theory, the study shows how a prerequisite for a successful transfer of Scandinavian works at this time was easy access for the authors or literary agents of the source culture to a network of cultural agents such as translators, publishers, theatre directors and critics. The study analyses how Strindberg’s access to such networks in France and Germany and his lack of a similar network in Britain and the USA may explain the divergent reception in these countries. In addition, the dissertation portrays the conditions for how European literature in general could migrate within Europe at the turn of the 20th century, and how the social norms in Britain and the USA in particular have affected the translation of Strindberg’s works.

    • This article sheds new light on the Swedish introduction of poetry written in French, Spanish and Portuguese by black authors and/or on ”black” topics. More specifically, the article discusses Artur Lundkvist’s anthology Den mörke brodern (‘The darker brother’), published in 1957. It analyzes the title, foreword, selection and translations included in the anthology and relates these to international models of the time and to a Swedish essay on poetry written by black authors published in 1960. Lundkvist’s approach is found to be more negrophile and exotizising than the international models and the Swedish essay.
