  • A Ru-Ru pair housed in ruthenium phthalocyanine : the role of a "cage" architecture in the molecule coupling with the Ag(111) surface
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 19:2, s. 1449-1457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of studies have investigated the properties of monomeric and double-decker phthalocyanines (Pcs) adsorbed on metal surfaces, in view of applications in spintronics devices. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we consider here a different member of the Pcs family, the (RuPc)(2) dimer, whose structure is characterized by two paired up magnetic centers embedded in a double-decker architecture. For (RuPc)(2) on Ag(111), we show that this architecture works as a preserving cage by shielding the Ru-Ru pair from a direct interaction with the surface atoms. In fact, while noticeable surface-to-molecule charge transfer occurs with the ensuing quenching of the molecular magnetic moment, such phenomena occur here in the absence of a direct Ru-Ag coupling or structural rearrangement, at variance with other Pcs and thanks to the above shielding effect. These unique properties of the (RuPc)(2) architecture are expected to permit an easy control of the surface-to-molecule charge-transfer process as well as of the molecular magnetic properties, thus making the (RuPc)(2) dimer a significant paradigm for innovative "cage" structures as well as a promising candidate for applications in spintronics nano or single-molecule devices.

  • Careers, citations, bibliometrics, and impact : perspectives of new and emerging researchers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: How to get published in the best tourism journals. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781035300600 - 9781035300594 ; , s. 211-238
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter brings together invited contributions from new and emerging academics with respect to their experiences and how publishing demands affect their careers and life, and vice versa. The provision of such experiences is important as it conveys the reality of publishing from a real-world context with respect to the pressures we face, especially when starting on the academic ladder. Authors were given a broad scope with respect to their contributions and the results are provided with only very minor editing. They have also been presented anonymously, or rather collectively, because although there are clearly different perspectives, emphasises, and interpretations, there are also commonalities in the contributors’ experiences. Nevertheless, as the reader will see, there are a number of common themes that emerge. Following the perspectives of the different contributions the chapter will discuss some of the main issues that emerge and their implications, including some of the darker aspects of the pressures of publishing.

  • Just Because It Seems Impossible, Doesn't Mean We Shouldn't At Least Try : The Need for Longitudinal Perspectives on Tourism Partnerships and the SDGs
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0966-9582 .- 1747-7646. ; 30:10, s. 2282-2297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 highlights the importance that the partnership narrative plays in the implementation of SDGs. However, given the brevity of many development projects, these partnerships are often developed and concluded rapidly, with little attention given to longer-term implications or success. This paper argues that in order to create and develop partnerships that properly address the SDGs, it is imperative that a process perspective is developed that takes into account the range of stakeholders and interests, values, and the power relations between actors prior to and during the project together with a comprehensive understanding of what is success. This requires a full awareness of the project's context and previous interventions, activities, and policies. In order to illustrate the necessity of longitudinal partnerships and perspectives, a case study, a community-based development project in New Delhi, India, is used. The goal of the project has been to ensure that the community is actively involved in the entire process, eventually becoming owners of the interventions so that, when the project and partnership eventually ends, the community continues to benefit. Examples from the project are used to emphasize the importance of long-term planning and partnership driven by context-specificity, implementation processes and policy-awareness.

  • Urban tourism and urban socialist and communist heritage : beyond tragedy and farce?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Tourism Cities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2056-5607 .- 2056-5615. ; 3:3, s. 291-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Existing literature on state socialist and communist heritage as a form of tourist consumption predominately focuses on destination contexts, such as the former Soviet countries and the few remaining state communist countries (i.e. China, North Korea and Cuba). As a result, the visitation to places linked to the history of socialism and communism in the so-called western pluralist democracies has often been overlooked and, at most, unacknowledged, especially as most research on "socialist" heritage focuses on sites connected to statist heritage rather than sites connected to socialist movements. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - This paper aims to fill the gap in terms of research focusing on these types of sites, with evidence from a range of countries in Europe and the Americas. It does so by illustrating the presence and engagement with official and non-official communist/socialist heritage at varying levels of commodification. Findings - The paper concludes that not only is there a need to broaden the concept of socialist heritage but that its framing needs to continue to be understood from present day ideological discourses and struggles with respect to the marking of urban heritage tourist locations. Originality/value - This contribution advocates the broadening of the concept of socialist heritage by acknowledging the relevance of "hidden" urban sites related to key socialist thinkers, socialist opposition to fascism, and civil wars in which the socialist movement was involved, while also drawing parallels between the levels of socialist/heritage recognition and use as a commodity in relation to the historical narrative within the studied countries.

  • Conceptualizing Destination Resilience from a Multilevel Perspective
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tourism Review International. - : Cognizant Communication Corporation. - 1544-2721 .- 1943-4421. ; 22:3-4, s. 235-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of resilience has gained momentum in current tourism research, yet there are still flaws and discrepancies between the many notions applied in the field. These limitations arc further evident when we focus on tourist destinations. The aim of this article is to advance the conceptualization of destination resilience through a multilevel perspective (MLP) that frames landscape, regime, niche, and actors as integrated elements of the tourism system. The resulting framework encompasses ecological, socioecological, sociopolitical, socioeconomic, and sociotechnological dimensions reflecting the embeddedness of resilience among heterogeneous and potentially complementary destination stakeholders. It is argued that the use of the MLP advances the understanding of tourism destination planning, particularly in contexts coping with gradual as well as drastic changes due to both demand fluctuations and supply-side disturbances.

  • Elite interview, urban tourism governance and post-disaster recovery : evidence from post-earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 25:13, s. 2192-2206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the long tradition of fieldwork and qualitative research practice in tourism studies, the reporting of methodological notes and reflections is limited in the literature. Many excellent methodological remarks in research reports and graduate theses find few outlets in academic journals and those few contributions that are eventually published often emphasize the novelty of the method rather than crucial aspects such as positionality and embeddedness. This is further evident in urban studies with regard to post-disaster recovery research. This article seeks to fill the current gap in the field by providing a reflective methodological account on fieldwork and elite interviews in post-earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand. It does so by implementing a framework addressing key points in the elite interview process, with emphasis on access to fieldwork sites, power relations, positionality, rapport and ethical issues. The manuscript presents aspects of fieldwork, spatiality and power relations that tend to be overlooked in the literature. Albeit being context-specific, it is argued that the evidence from this study can also have relevance to the understanding of fieldwork in other post-disaster and tourism contexts.

  • From governance to meta-governance in tourism? : Re-incorporating politics, interests and values in the analysis of tourism governance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tourism Recreation Resarch. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0250-8281 .- 2320-0308. ; 41:2, s. 109-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite its theorization in the political and policy sciences in the early 1990s, the concept of metagovernance has gained relatively little recognition in tourism studies. Nevertheless, its significance in the political sciences and policy literature, especially as a result of the perceived failure of governance systems following the recent global financial crisis, has only served to reinforce its relevance. Metagovernance addresses some of the perceived failures of traditional governance approaches and associated interventions, and has enabled the understanding of central-state led regimes of shadowed hierarchical authorities and local-level micro-practices of social innovation and self-government. In contrast, tourism studies have tended to restrict study of the political dimension of tourism governance and the role of the state under the traditional parallelism between government and governance. Examination of how governance is itself governed enables a better understanding of the practices of planning and policy making affecting tourism and destinations. In particular, the applications of concepts of governance are inextricably linked to a given set of value assumptions which predetermine the range of its application. A short example of the application of the metagovernance paradigm is provided from the New Zealand context. It is concluded that governance mechanisms are not value-neutral and instead serve to highlight the allocation of power in a destination and the dominance of particular values and interests.

  • National and urban public policy in tourism : towards the emergence of a hyperneoliberal script?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Tourism Policy. - Geneva : InderScience Publishers. - 1750-4090 .- 1750-4104. ; 7:1, s. 4-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the 2007-2009 Global Financial Crisis (GFC), some national governments have been pursuing a counter-reform of the public sector characterised by further policy centralisation and the 'hollowing out' of regional authorities. Public expenditure and sovereign public debt reductions have become the pretext for the implementation of hyperneoliberal development agendas aimed at the attraction of inward capitals and a further 'competitive' repositioning of major cities within a global market. Tourism and the visitor economy have been used as leverage for the attraction of capital and skilled people in the long-term development strategies of cities. This article illustrates how crises have led the way in the recent restructuring of the public sector and of destination management organisations (DMOs) in particular. Findings from national and urban development strategies recently implemented in New Zealand suggest a strong, market-driven agenda that follows a hyperneoliberal script. • Shock of the new : The rhetoric of global urban tourism in the rebuild of Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Power of New Urban Tourism. - London : Routledge. - 9780367555399 - 9781003093923
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The major earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 represented a turning point in the function of the city of Christchurch as a tourist destination. The rebuilding of the city centre and redevelopment of key urban tourist areas and attractions has been highly contested, with the central government rhetoric on anchor projects prevailing over local residents’ and stakeholders’ visions of inclusive and liveable mixed redevelopments for the benefit of both locals and visitors. The aim of this chapter is to ascertain the stakeholders’ roles and the policy discourses that emerged over the rebuild of the city centre. It is argued that New Urban Tourism should be seen as a continuation of existing neoliberal governance practices and more of a ‘fashion statement’ with respect to experiential tourism rather than a fundamental shift in the nature of urban tourism development in post-disaster cities.

  • Sports and event-led regeneration strategies in post-earthquake Christchurch
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sport, events, tourism and regeneration. - London : Routledge. - 9781138642812 - 9781315629728 ; , s. 100-117
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sports and event-led regeneration strategies have been a significant characteristic of major cities in the developed world since the 1970s and are an integral, though widely debated, component of urban redevelopment policy. This chapter examines the role of sports and events infrastructure and event hosting as part of post-natural disaster induced regeneration. It focuses on findings from research undertaken between April 2013 and November 2015 on the provision of new amenities for leisure and tourism in the Christchurch central business district (CBD) following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Using the case of the 2010 and 2011 earthquake sequence in Christchurch in New Zealand, the chapter examines the role of sport and events in post-earthquake urban regeneration and the accompanying issues it raises with respect to governance, policy process and planning practice. Since the aftermath of the 22 February 2011 earthquake, the issue of a stadium has become one of the key rebuilding planning topics.

  • The impacts of Airbnb in Athens, Lisbon and Milan: a rent gap theory perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 25:20, s. 3329-3342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2007–2008 Global Financial Crisis profoundly impacted the housing markets, particularly of the so-called PIGS countries. Main cities in Portugal, Italy and Greece have seen a sharp decrease in house prices and rent value since 2010. At the same time, the rise of Airbnb has contributed to the reframing of housing market demand in cities, with an increase of temporary lettings in prime urban tourist areas. Understandably, this has direct implications for local residents, with renters’ displacement, tourism gentrification and raising cases of tourismphobia. This article provides insights from three cities – Athens, Lisbon and Milan – to show how the dynamics in the housing market and the boost of Airbnb over the last decade are steadily changing the urban populations of the aforementioned cities. This research builds upon the rent gap theory and the Luke’s’ Power Theory to illustrate how Airbnb is fostering a new form of urban displacement at a faster rate than traditional housing gentrification, with the renting of prime residential areas to tourists.

  • They never said "Come here and let's talk about it' : Exclusion and non-decision-making in the rebuild of Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Local Economy. - : Sage Publications. - 0269-0942 .- 1470-9325. ; 32:7, s. 617-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decision-making in urban contexts is increasingly characterized by a depoliticized environment that has normalized neoliberal urban policies. These are further pursued in post-disaster contexts across the globe with narratives that overshadow the views and demands of the affected communities. Spatial contestation, exclusion of certain groups from key decisions and episodes of non-decision-making thus shape urban redevelopment through top-down governance. This paper provides a Lukesian narrative on post-earthquake Christchurch, where the redevelopment of the city has been characterized by a strong command-and-control rebuild agenda emanating from the national government, regardless of the feedback and criticisms from the affected community.

  • The 2015 Cricket World Cup in Christchurch Using an event for post-disaster reimagine and regeneration
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Place Management and Development. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1753-8335 .- 1753-8343. ; 13:1, s. 4-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This study aims to focus on the development and upgrading of the Hagley Park cricket oval in Christchurch for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and how this hallmark event was used a catalyst to rebrand the city following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the findings from research conducted between 2012 and 2016. Data for the analysis were collected from mainstream media, sport organisations websites and government archives. In addition, a two-round series of semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders was undertaken in the aftermath of the Cricket World Cup. Findings In the case of Christchurch, the earthquakes and the destruction of much of the downtown provided a recovery opportunity, with the 2015 Cricket World Cup used to expedite the development of a new sporting venue in the city centre and rebrand the city to international tourists and sport enthusiasts. Originality/value This research provides further evidence on the logics of disaster capitalism and how cities embark on costly redevelopment projects for sports and events whilst overlooking exacerbating vulnerabilities among the local community.

  • The globalising force of human mobilities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Globalisation and Tourism. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781786431295 - 9781786431288 ; , s. 55-65
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter examines the main forces that shape and determine human mobilities over time and space. Human mobility is different when people are on holiday than when they remain at home, but not all human mobility refers to tourism-related travel. There are many different mobility modalities that are brought about by transportation and communication technology, including financial deregulation, technology change, media evolution (e.g. social media) and the cost and time of moving people, services and commodities through time and space.

  • Tourism and resilience : individual, organisational and destination perspectives
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is the first authored overview of resilience in tourism and its relationship to the broader resilience literature. The volume takes a multi-scaled approach to examine resilience at the individual, organisation and destination levels, and with respect to the wider tourism system. It covers the different approaches to understanding resilience (the ecological and engineering approaches) and identifies issues with their understanding and application. The book connects issues of resilience to related key concepts such as vulnerability, adaptation, networks, systems, change and social capital. It is designed to be an upper level undergraduate and postgraduate primer on resilience in a tourism context and will be of interest to tourism researchers in planning, development, geography, impacts, sustainability, disaster management and environmental studies. © 2018 C.
