- BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation (LTx) is established as a life-saving treatment in end-stage lung disease. However, long-term survival is hampered by the development of chronic rejection, almost synonymous with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS). The rejection is characterized by deposition of extracellular matrix in small airways. Fibroblasts/myofibroblasts are the main producers of extracellular matrix molecules such as proteoglycans. This study compared fibroblast phenotype and activity in the wound healing process at different points after LTx in patients who later did, or did not, develop BOS. METHODS: Distally derived fibroblasts from patients 6 and 12 months after LTx and from healthy controls were analyzed for production of the proteoglycans versican, perlecan, biglycan, and decorin, with and without transforming growth factor (TGF)-β(1). Fibroblast migration and proliferation were also studied. RESULTS: At 6 and 12 months after LTx, versican production was higher in fibroblasts from LTx patients (p < 0.01 p < 0.01) than from controls. Fibroblasts from patients who later developed BOS were more responsive to TGF-β(1)-induced synthesis of versican and biglycan than patients without signs of rejection (p < 0.05). Production of perlecan and decorin was negatively correlated with fibroblast proliferation in fibroblasts at 6 months after LTx. In a more detailed case study of 2 patients, one with and one without BOS, the altered proteoglycan profile was associated with impaired lung function. CONCLUSIONS: LTx changes the phenotype of fibroblasts to a non-proliferative but extracellular matrix-producing cell due to wound healing involving TGF-β(1). If not controlled, this may lead to development of BOS.

- A general bias in most welfare states has been to use public revenues to deal with inequality in social and economic programmes. However, tax policies and regulatory tax reforms very seldom consider that gender norms and practices have had profound effects in shaping tax systems, which has become hindrance for achieving economic gender equality.By applying a gender perspective on family and business taxation we want to show that breadwinning and support of the family are common dominators for how the modern income taxation was constructed. A common understanding is that the consequence of this transformation from family economy to market economy also lead to a permanent and clear cut between these two spheres of economy. We will show that this idea of separation is more of a fiction than the reality.

- Denna rapport redovisar forskningsresultat från projektet Att satsa på framtiden? Den statliga kreditpolitiken och småföretagen 1933–1970 som finansierats av Handelsbankens Forskningsstiftelser under perioden 2017–2020 genom anslag P17- 0108. I rapporten redovisas empiriska-analytiska resultat från ett omfattande källmaterial som excerperats från Kommerskollegiums arkiv som finns deponerat i Riksarkivets filial i Marieberg. Fokus ligger främst på att redovisa resultat från en undersökning av alla statliga lånegarantier under perioden 1954–1965. Rapporten innehåller även ett avsnitt baserat på en urvalsundersökning av lån från Statens hantverkslånefond under perioden 1954–1956. Dessa resultat har även analyserats och diskuterats i relation till övriga forskningsresultat inom projektet. Med förbehållet att alla publikationer måste studeras för att överblicka projektets resultat på detaljnivå, utgör denna rapport därmed en sammanfattning av ovanstående forskningsprojekt.

- This article focuses on the interaction between the state and Swedish banks during the establishment of two institutes for small business credit, AB Industrikredit and AB Företagskredit, between 1958 and 1962. These institutes were established as intermediaries between the supplementary pension system and the credit market. We have been able to elucidate this process by the Swedish Bankers’ Association granting us privileged access to archival material on these negotiations.It is demonstrated that the strong ideological conflict characterizing the parliamentary debate on the supplementary pensions system did not spill over into the system being implemented within the financial sector as this was organized through the examined credit institutes. Instead, the banks and the state were able to negotiate through established channels and arenas for business-government relations in the financial sector. Even if the parties initially exhibited mistrust based on different historical interpretations of the market for small business credit, they also recognized the degree of change that would be brought on by the supplementary pension system with regard to the financial markets and capital formation as a whole. Hence, they downplayed ideological differences and strived to reach an outcomethat was mutually beneficial in its final form. A crucial indication of this consensus is that fifty percent of each institute was owned by the state while the other fifty percent was owned by the banks.

Family Taxation as Tax Reduction : The Introduction of Income Splitting in Swedish Taxation, 1945–1952

- This paper deals with the introduction of marital aggregation and income splitting in Sweden in 1952. It is demonstrated that actors such as political parties, employers and white-collar unions embraced income splitting because it mitigated the effects of wage moderation and progressive income tax for most wage-earners. In this respect, we recognise that the income splitting reform was made at the expense of married women with high incomes. This result relates to previous research which has noted that women´s organizations and politicians representing women´s interests have functioned as ‘policy takers’, rather than ‘policy-makers’, in the Scandinavian corporatist system.

- The twentieth-century history of the Swedish welfare state and public-service sector is critical to understanding the changing role of women in Sweden, as the expansion of the country's service production, beginning in the 1960s, has been mainly the result of welfare-state policies. Yet women's self-employment and wage work in the service industry has been neglected as an economic factor in both traditional economic and business-history accounts and in historical studies of gender. Some suggestions are made for future explorations of the Swedish service sector as it operates in the shadow of the welfare state.

- It has been suggested that the railways, as the first national industrialization project, became role models for public regulatory solutions in other industries in the same country. However, it still has to be explored if the institutional arrangements have actually been transferred from the railways to other industries. Comparative country analysis may increase our understanding of how institutions changes and eventually are ‘inherited’ by other industries. In this paper the question of whether or not the bias of the railway policy in the various Nordic countries found its way into a later emerging network industry, the telephone industry is discussed. The result shows that even as similar railway regulations emerged in the Nordic countries from the 1920s, the regulation of the telephone industries did not emerge along the same lines. Here, two different regulatory trajectories were established, one in Sweden and Norway and another one in Denmark and Finland. Here other factors such as for instance political bargaining power and national and regional development strategies must be taken into consideration.

- 1972 tillkännagav regeringen stolt att staten skulle göra en stor satsning och ge industristöd till det anrika konfektionsföretaget Algot Johansson AB (Algots) för att etablera textilindustri på tre orter i Västerbotten genom ett dotterbolag kallat Algots Nord. Det var på många sätt ett ovanligt initiativ.Det är ett av de genom tiderna största lokaliseringsstöden som staten gett till ett privat industriföretag och en av få satsningar i svensk industripolitik som riktat in sig på kvinnlig sysselsättning. Här skulle tusen jobb skapas i en region där den kvinnliga arbetslösheten var hög och arbetstillfällena få.Fallet Algots Nord kan ses som en symbol för en politisk era där beslutsfattarna hade höga ambitioner och gott självförtroende, men där dessa ambitioner på kort tid resulterade i stora förluster, många förlorade jobb och en härva av konflikter.

- I dag ser vi stora förändringar i det svenska samhället i form av avregleringar – eller snarare omregleringar. Samtidigt har debatten om avregleringarna i den svenska ekonomin polariserats alltmer. Å ena sidan framställs avregleringsvågen som något naturnödvändigt och helt självklart. Å andra sidan ses den som en del av högersammansvärjning, ägnat att torpedera välfärdssamhället. Bakom båda uppfattningarna finns föreställningen att avregleringarna är en avvikelse eller nyorientering från ett läge där regleringar alltid har funnits - alltså att perioden efter 1990 skulle vara unik.Författarna sätter detta fenomen i ett större perspektiv genom att diskutera och dra lärdomar från ett antal omreglerade sektorer i den svenska ekonomin. De använder historiska exempel för att belysa olika faser i vår moderna regleringshistoria. - This study investigates the extent and nature of the interaction between the political, institutional andeconomical development in the Swedish railway sector 1920-1980. The work deals with two main issuse,which may be summarized in the following question: has the Swedish railway policy contributed to orcounterbalanced the stagnation of the railways, especially in the post-war period? The basic premise has beenthat the institutional framework from the 19th century, was well adjusted to the requirements in thecontemporary industrialization process. The adaption of the regulations, obligations and economic principlesfrom the inter-war years and henceforth was more problematic. A growing discrepancy between economicconditions and policy goals emerged. Ulis affected the function of the Sate Railways (SJ).The interesting issue is to explain the process of renewal and abandonment of the original institutionalarrangements. There are two distinctive driving forces in this process. Firstly the demand for transport in theeconomy of the society changed. This interacted with the expansion of motorvehicles. Motor vehicles, and lateron civil aviation, have taken over parts of traditional railway transports. Of greater significance though, is thefact that railways have not been able to compete with motorvehicles on a number of growing markets in theeconomy of society. This has been of major importance to the diminishing economic returns and the decliningcompany profitability in the railway sector. The second driving force is to be found in the institutional setting inthe railway sector. The institutional principles and the railway policy gave social and economic responsibilitypriority over business profitability as the managerial strategy for SJ. SJ was used to fulfil regional and generaleconomic policy goals. As a consequence the unprofitable private railways were nationalized to save theregional transport system. To succeed on the competitive transport market in the post-war period it becamenecessary for SJ to act as a profit-seeking company. This created a long period of political struggle inParliament concerning the institutional principles. In order to keep the social economic principles, the monetaryclaims were reduced. Subsidies were given to try to save SJ s profitability as a business company. The mixtureof social and monetary principles from 1960 and onwards, could neither solve the railway's market problems,nor could they keep the regional railway system intact. This failure led to the abandonment of the originalinstitutional framework. In the late 1980 s it was totally replaced. Hie guiding rules for the State Railways arenow concentrated on competition and company profitability.
