  • Developing a carer identity and negotiating everyday life through social networking sites : An explorative study on identity constructions in an online Swedish carer community
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 38:11, s. 2304-2324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overarching reason why carers do not utilise support services is that many people who perform care-giving do not necessarily self-identify as a carer. Understanding the development of carer identities is therefore crucial for the utilisation of different carer-focused health services. This study arose from the European Union-funded INNOVAGE project and aimed to describe how older carers conceptualise and understand their identity as carers on a Swedish online social forum. Theoretically the study adopts a constructionist approach and the method of netnography was applied. The findings reveal that a change in self-perception occurs in the process through which a carer role is acquired. The presence or absence of recognition for the older carers’ capacity, knowledge and life situation is seen as filtered through the needs of the care recipient, making the carer identity into an invisible self. This is not least the case when the identity is constructed in alliance with conceptual and moral obligations found within a marital discourse. Nevertheless, the opportunity for online communication may help to create a virtual space of social recognition through which different experiences attached to caring can be discussed. The significance of online communication is here understood as the possibility it presents for carers to be recognised by other carers. It is a process through which an invisible self can become visible.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Innovation in Aging. - : Oxford University Press. - 2399-5300. ; 1:Suppl_1, s. 465-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research highlights that a key overarching reason why family carers do not utilize support services is that many people who perform the duties of caregiving do not necessarily self-identify as a carer. Understanding the development of carer identities may thus be understood as crucial for the utilization of different health services directed towards carers. Based on the EU funded Innovage project, this project aims to describe and analyse how older carers supporting and caring for an older person understand and socially negotiate their life situation and identity as carers on a Swedish online social forum. Theoretically the project departs from a constructionist approach and methodologically it has been inspired by a specifically designed method for studying the cultures and communities that emerge from online computer-mediated or Internet-based communications, called netnography. The results indicate that in the process through which a carer role is acquired, a significant change in self-perception occurs. The presence or absence of recognition for the older carers’ capacity, is understood as filtered through the needs of the cared for person, making the carer identity into an invisible self. At the same time, the opportunity for online communication may help to create a virtual space of social recognition through which negative and positive experiences attached to caring can be discussed. The significance of online communication is here understood as the possibility to be recognized, and feel empowered by other carers.

  • The precariousness of asylum-seekers’ care and support : Informal care within and because of the immigration process
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 7:1, s. 50-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using ethnographic data, this article aims to analyse the provision of informal care by asylum-seekers in Sweden and how this intersects with the(ir) asylum process. The article argues that asylum-seekers are framed by the Swedish welfare system and immigration authorities as ungrievable and deportable, which not only impedes their access to formal care systems and values, but also creates a strong need for informal care. Further, it is suggested that the informal care provided by asylum-seekers should be included in current debate on informal care and its impact on people’s lives.

  • Being a Group Fitness Instructor during the COVID-19 Crisis : Navigating Professional Identity, Social Distancing, and Community
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-0760. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research question and purpose: Les Mills is a New Zealand-based fitness distributor with a community consisting of approximately 140.000 instructors worldwide who teach standardized workout routines. This paper aims to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic and related measurements, such as social distancing affect the everyday lives and professions of Les Mills International (LMI) group fitness instructors. The aim was met with the following research questions: RQ1: How are social distancing and social connectedness understood, and how do they condition LMI instructors' understanding of their profession? RQ2: What do LMI instructors think about the #LesMillsUnited campaign to maintain a strong trainer community in the midst of the pandemic? RQ3: How do LMI instructors think that group fitness will change long term due to social distancing? Research methods: Using qualitative measures and a case-study-based approach, data were gathered through interviews with LMI-certified group fitness instructors. Seven semi-structured focused group discussions with fifteen group fitness instructors from different countries were conducted and audio recorded. The first round of virtual discussions took place in April 2020, and the follow-up talks in September 2020. A thematic analysis was employed to analyze the material. Results and findings: According to the participants, online classes as a means of upholding group fitness in times of social distancing is an insufficient substitute to face-to-face instructing, lacking social connectedness that is normally maintained through successful rituals or social scripts. Navigating "instructorhood" during the pandemic includes emotional labor where not only relationships to clients are challenged, but instructors also experience societal pressure to reinvent themselves as instructors. Implications: With no way of telling how long social distancing needs to be practiced, the group fitness industry is facing unprecedented challenges. Making sense of the group fitness profession currently preoccupies instructors who may now have to redefine to themselves how they can teach, and who for.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On the 11th of March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declares the coronavirus to be a pandemic, which is followed by strict measures to contain a spread of the disease.  Yet, COVID-19 is a distinctively different pandemic to the one that was declared in 2012, namely, physical inactivity (Hall & Laddy & Philipps et al. 2020, 1). During the corona related lockdowns, exercising at home employing (online) on-demand services has become increasingly popular. One of the suppliers are the New Zealand-based Les Mills International; currently the worlds’ biggest provider of standardized fitness workouts. With their altruistic motto — for a fitter planet — their exercise routines were taught in more than a hundred countries by approximately 130.000 instructors before the pandemic. Although their virtual alternatives seem successful, group-fitness instructors face severe professional consequences due to corona-restrictions; resulting in the immediate closure of gyms as well as social distancing. By conducting focused group discussions online with Les Mills instructors active in six different countries, this chapter will provide insights into how group-fitness instructors negotiate their roles as fitness professionals during a crisis that challenges/threatens both personal and global health. Respondents discussed how the pandemic has changed their ability to perform their professions, and how they continue to live out their instructorhood in new and alternative ways.

  • A new doping demography? : Female PIED users in the context of online communication
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Network of Doping Research, 2019 Conference, WADA’s 20th Anniversary, 22.-23. August 2019, Aarhus University, Denmark. - : Aarhus University. ; , s. 8-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internationally, WADA, NADOs, and different public health organizations conduct fairly comprehensive antidoping measures. As a consequence, numerous ‘new’ ways to learn about and access these types of drugs have emerged. Different internet communities, for example, have become part of a new self-help culture in which mostly men, can anonymously approach these substances. But times are changing and women are increasingly engaging in drug using practices. Using a netnographic approach, the aim of this study is to describe and analyse how female users of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIED) approach, understand and negotiate their use, and relate it to existing preventative measures. The study will focus on an online community called Flashback, and adopts a constructionist approach, investigating how particular subject positions (identities) and drug use strategies are created within a specific ‘community of practice’. The results show that there is an increasing amount of knowledge that not only targets but is also developed by and for women concerning PIED use. Female users are gradually becoming more integrated into the online doping community. A changing doping demography and the online offer of PEIDs will be a great challenge in the development of future supranational, and online, prevention strategies and anti-doping campaigns.

  • Becoming a half-time parent: Fatherhood after divorce
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1322-9400 .- 1839-3543. ; 25:1, s. 2-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Men have increasingly been dedicating time and effort to childcare. Consequently, the idea of the ‘new’ emotionally involved father has been discussed in the literature. This article focuses on narratives of divorced Swedish fathers with joint physical custody of their children. This arrangement, a new model of post-divorce parenting, has become increasingly popular in several Nordic countries. The article aims to analyse the experiences attached to and emanating from this particular form of post-divorce agreement, and how it is understood in relation to the Swedish childcare system. The fathers interviewed had a strong ambition to share things equally, as well as to carry on family practices in gender-equal ways. This desire was, however, balanced with a number of obstacles, such as work requirements, living conditions and conceptions of gender differences. In this way, the fathers’ subjective aspirations and strivings were filtered through structural and cultural conditions in society, with clear connections to Swedish family and gender politics.

  • Becoming an Ironman triathlete : Extreme exercise, gender equality and the family puzzle
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 21:9, s. 1351-1363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Departing from a qualitative research approach, this article focuses on Swedish amateur Ironman triathletes and their family life. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how an elite amateur lifestyle is upheld and balanced with the demands of a sustainable family and social life. The results indicate that the process of becoming and staying an Ironman creates tensions in intimate relationships, making it hard to bring the family life puzzle together. Although the participants interviewed often talk about family life in terms of sharing things fairly equally, in terms of gender equity and involved parenthood, this seemingly is not always an easy ideal to fulfil in practice. On a broader cultural level, these findings can thus be contextualized in relation to discourses associated with the gendering of families and functions, and, of course, the gender of sport and performance.

  • Between Performance and Beauty : Towards a sociological understanding of trajectories to drug use in a gym and bodybuilding context.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum. - 2000-088X. ; 4, s. 69-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emanating from an ethnographic study of Swedish bodybuilders, this article aims to present a sociological understanding of various circumstances influencing the decision to begin taking performance-enhancing drugs. Theoretically, the research builds upon a constructionist approach, in which actors’ identity claims, the way they describe themselves and their group affiliation, are understood both as individual stories of identity construction and as discursive statements. The result shows that the willingness to perform, to focus on the body’s function, is a paradigmatic narrative being expressed throughout. As such, this performance oriented lifestyle can be related to traditional values saluted within organised sports and also understood as a fairly stable part of a hegemonic masculine construction. However, the results also show how the performance logic is entwined with a strong zest for bodily aesthetics. In the article, this cultural ambiguity is used as an analytical window through which one can see how different understandings of gender, health and doping continuously are socially negotiated in relation to contemporary fitness culture and public health organisations in Swedish society. By analysing doping trajectories in this way the article suggests that drug using practises could be understood as an activity performed along a continuum of cultural and societal (over-)conformity, rather than actions representing societal abnormality.

  • Bodybuilding and Fitness Doping in Transition. Historical Transformations and Contemporary Challenges
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-0760 .- 1392-0758. ; 8:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and analyses the historical development of gym and fitness culture in general and doping use in this context in particular. Theoretically, the paper utilises the concept of subculture and explores how a subcultural response can be used analytically in relation to processes of cultural normalisation as well as marginalisation. The focus is on historical and symbolic negotiations that have occurred over time, between perceived expressions of extreme body cultures and sociocultural transformations in society-with a perspective on fitness doping in public discourse. Several distinct phases in the history of fitness doping are identified. First, there is an introductory phase in the mid-1950s, in which there is an optimism connected to modernity and thoughts about scientifically-engineered bodies. Secondly, in the 1960s and 70s, a distinct bodybuilding subculture is developed, cultivating previously unseen muscular male bodies. Thirdly, there is a critical phase in the 1980s and 90s, where drugs gradually become morally objectionable. The fourth phase, the fitness revolution, can be seen as a transformational phase in gym culture. The massive bodybuilding body is replaced with the well-defined and moderately muscular fitness body, but at the same time there are strong commercialised values which contribute to the development of a new doping market. Finally, it is possible to speculate on the development of a fifth phase, in which fitness doping is increasingly being filtered into mainstream gym and fitness culture, influencing the fitness doping demography.

  • Challenging Hegemony Through Narrative : Centering Women’s Experiences and Establishing a Sis-Science Culture Through a Women-Only Doping Forum
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communication & Sport. - : Sage Publications. - 2167-4795 .- 2167-4809. ; 10:4, s. 708-729
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understandings of image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs) and their use has largely been conceptualized through the lens of male hegemonic patterns, treating women’s doping as a threat to the “natural” gender order. This article focuses on an exclusive, women-only online IPED forum. It aims to describe and analyze how this new forum was met within the broader doping community, and how issues related to IPED use and gender are addressed by women when their views are not backgrounded by potential male commentators and misogynistic discourses. The results show that first-hand knowledge is disseminated by women, which contributes to the foundation of a women’s ethnopharmacological (sub)culture. Women, their bodies, and experiences become the standard and the “unspoken” norm in the discussions. The secluded space allows women to challenge patterns of hegemonic masculinity, while building and reinforcing women’s experiences, bodies, and expertise as the standard. This stresses the importance of moving beyond hegemonic conceptualizations to understand the ongoing socio-cultural changes to the gender balance of IPED use and to center women’s doping experiences, and the risks associated with use. This has implications for the formation and development of both this community and of a “sis-science” based on women’s knowledge and experience.

  • Den perfekta mannen? : Maskulinitet och kropp i omvandling
  • 2022

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sport, Education and Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1357-3322 .- 1470-1243. ; 21:2, s. 148-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses fitness professionals’ perceptions and understanding of their occupational education and pedagogical pursuance, framed within the emergence of a global fitness industry. The empirical material consists of interviews with personal trainers and group fitness instructors, as well as observations in their working environment. In addition, printed material from different occupational organisations and educational companies has been included. The narratives of the fitness professionals and a case study of Les Mills are presented and analysed through the concept of the McDonaldisation of society, or more specifically of fitness culture. The results show that, even though gym and fitness franchises differ from hamburger restaurant chains, there are crucial similarities, but also differences. One can, for example, discern a tendency towards the construction of predesigned and highly monitored programmes, such as the one developed by Les Mills. Homogenisation is also apparent when looking at the body ideals produced, as fitness professionals work on their own or clients’ bodies, which makes it possible to anticipate a global body ideal. The social and cultural patterns of self-regulation and self-government found in gym and fitness culture can be understood and analysed in a global context. What we find is an intriguing and complex mixture of regulation, control and standardisation, on the one hand, and a struggle to express the body, to be ‘free’ and to transgress the boundaries set by the commercial global fitness industry, on the other.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-9921 .- 1465-993X. ; 23:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Screening decreases mortality among lung cancer patients but is not widely implemented, thus there is an unmet need for an easily accessible non-invasive method to enable early diagnosis. Particles in exhaled air offer a promising such diagnostic tool. We investigated the validity of a particles in exhaled air device (PExA) to measure the particle flow rate (PFR) and collect exhaled breath particles (EBP) to diagnose primary lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).METHODS: Seventeen patients listed for resection of LUAD stages IA-IIIA and 18 non-cancer surgical control patients were enrolled. EBP were collected before and after surgery for LUAD, and once for controls. Proteomic analysis was carried out using a proximity extension assay technology. Results were validated in both plasma from the same cohort and with microarray data from healthy lung tissue and LUAD tissue in the GSE10072 dataset.RESULTS: Of the 92 proteins analyzed, levels of five proteins in EBP were significantly higher in the LUAD patients compared to controls. Levels of phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) and hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET) decreased in LUAD patients after surgery compared to control patients. PFR was significantly higher in the LUAD cohort at all timepoints compared to the control group. MET in plasma correlated significantly with MET in EBP.CONCLUSION: Collection of EBP and measuring of PFR has never been performed in patients with LUAD. In the present study PFR alone could distinguish between LUAD and patients without LUAD. PLTP and MET were identified as potential biomarkers to evaluate successful tumor excision.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodies, Sexualities, and Masculinities. - : Berghahn Journals. - 2688-8149 .- 2688-8157. ; 3:2, s. 76-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through hegemonic ideas about muscles and extraordinary performances, image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) and their use have been traditionally connected to hypersexualized masculinities. This link has resulted in spectacular ideas and fantasies about what IPEDs can do to/with men regarding their bodies and sexual performance. However, these ideas do not always manifest or correspond with daily life. Using a qualitative and case-study-based approach, this article investigates the relationship between doped and spectacular masculinities as they are presented and constructed in and through an online doping community, and users’ experiences of side effects of the doped body and its social consequences. Analytically, the article draws on Guy Debord’s work on the relationship between the spectacle and the real, and the ongoing theoretical debate on different reconfigurations and redefinitions of doped masculinities. It argues that anticipations of and effects from IPEDs can bring alternative ways of enacting doping masculinity and sexuality in the context of online communication while also blurring the lines between fantasy and lived experience.

  • Family practices, deportability and administrative violence : an ethnographic study on asylum seekers' family life in the Swedish migration context
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Families, Relationships and Societies. - : Policy Press. - 2046-7435 .- 2046-7443. ; 11:2, s. 157-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Utilising data gathered through ethnographic fieldwork this article investigates (a) how asylum seekers portray family life in relation to their decision to flee their country of origin, and (b) how asylum seekers’ ways of doing family life intersect with the Swedish migration context. Analytically, the article leans on sociologically informed theories of family practices and a conceptual discussion on deportability. The results show how family life among the participants is reconstituted both in terms of geographical closeness and distance, and in terms of ideas about a previous family life in the country of origin and hopes for a possible future in Sweden. The insecurity and the strains placed on people and their family bonds by current migration policies, and the risk of deportation, are interpreted as a specific form of administrative violence that cuts into family practices, serving to maintain physical and emotional distance between family members and break down social bonds.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: SAGE Open. - : SAGE Publications. - 2158-2440. ; 3:July-September, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes self-portrayals and gender constructions among female personal trainers within an Internet-mediated framework of fitness culture. The empirical material comes from a close examination of three strategically selected blogs. The result shows that some of the blogs clearly build upon what Connell calls emphasized femininity, as a means of legitimizing and constructing appropriate female fitness. In addition, there are also tendencies of sexualization in text and imagery present. As such, these self-representations are framed within a cultural history of body fitness dominated by stereotypical ways of perceiving masculinity and femininity. However, this does not capture the entire presentation of the self among the analyzed fitness bloggers. The blogs also point in the direction of ongoing negotiations and subversions of traditional gender norms. Among other things, they show how irony and humor are used as a means of questioning normative gender constructions while empowering female fitness and bodyliness.

  • Fitness Doping : Trajectories, Gender, Bodies and Health
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book compiles several years of multi-faceted qualitative research on fitness doping to provide a fresh insight into how the growing phenomenon intersects with issues of gender, body and health in contemporary society. Drawing on biographical interviews, as well as online and offline ethnography, Andreasson and Johansson analyse how, in the context of the global development of gym and fitness culture, particular doping trajectories are formulated, and users come into contact with doping. They also explore users’ internalisation of particular values, practices and communications and analyse how this influences understandings of the self, health, gender and the body, as well as tying this into wider beliefs regarding individual freedom and the law. This insight into doping goes beyond elite and organised sports, and will be of interest to students and scholars across the sociology of sport, leisure studies, and gender and body politics.

  • 2019
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From having been a subcultural, masculinecoded phenomenon in the 1970s, gym culture today has broadened, developing into a global, inclusive, multi-million dollar industry in which different forms of exercise are gathered under the general term of fitness. Despite this cultural transformation and the powerful idealisation of healthy lifestyles that characterises the fitness concept today, research shows, paradoxically, that these health arenas can be linked with doping. This report provides an overview of the state of research on fitness doping and how the routes to doping have been studied. One of its conclusions is that knowledge is limited, particularly regarding doping by women. The expansion and popularisation of fitness culture has led to unclear boundaries between doping in subcultural and often masculine-coded environments and doping as a more widespread and culturally accepted phenomenon in gym and fitness culture. The demographic ‘profile’ of people who dope has been expanded and the report ends with the question of how developments in prevention can tackle these changes.

  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract

  • From exercise to "exertainment" : Body techniques and body philosophies within a differentiated fitness culture
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum. - : Department of Sport Studies, Malmö University. - 2000-088X. ; 6, s. 27-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on two highly influential body techniques used in contemporary gym and fitness culture, namely bodybuilding and group fitness activities. The paper presents detailed self-portraits of two highly esteemed and well-known individuals representing each of these spheres of exercise. Both body techniques have their roots in physical culture. However, whereas bodybuilding goes back to the historical roots of European physical culture developed during the 19th century, Les Mills group fitness activities are a more recent phenomenon, with roots in aerobics and in the fitness culture developed during the 1960s. The case stories are read as both portraits of individuals and histories of two different forms of body techniques and philosophies of the body, and the analysis suggests that the narratives are to be understood in relation to historical changes in how society is organised and what this implies in terms of national and global demands for specific bodies.

  • From subcultures to common culture : Bodybuilders, skinheads and the normalization of the marginal
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Youth Research Symposium (NYRIS), Youth Moves. Voices, Spaces, Subjectivities. Trollhättan, Sweden, 15-17 june, 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using bodybuilding and skinheads/neo-Nazis as two rather diverse examples of subcultures, this study is a theoretical exploration of our understanding of the concept of subculture and common culture. The aim is to explore how the concept of subculture can be used in relation to processes of normalization and marginalisation. The focus is on the historical, symbolic and biographical relation between the subculture and the subcultural response, and socio-political transformations in society and culture. We are interested in understanding the processes in which for example bodybuilding has moved back and forth between a subcultural position and more common fitness culture, over time. As a parallel to this, we are also interested in how subcultures centred on skinheads, neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists influence and are connected to more general political transformations and opinions in contemporary society, blurring the distinction between subculture and common culture. The results indicate a complex relation between subcultures and the mainstreaming of certain values, opinions and practices. Deviance is sometimes, over time, renegotiated within common culture, turned into normality , and whereas extreme parts and contents of subcultures may be toned down in this process, core points and values may be extracted and generalized. Bodybuilding is for example transformed into fitness, but the core values of hard bodies, muscle training, health and asceticism are highly present in fitness culture, as well as in more common and dominant socio-cultural patterns. In a similar vein, the core values and sentiments in skinhead and right-wing subcultures xenophobia and nationalism are today becoming a part of the political culture in many European countries.

  • Gender, Fitness Doping and the Genetic Max : The Ambivalent Construction of Muscular Masculinities in an Online Community
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-0760. ; 5:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on written accounts posted on an online forum called Flashback. The purpose of the study was to explore how participants in this community negotiated themeanings of fitness doping and how such negotiations could be understood in terms of masculinity. The findings indicate that the Internet community studied in this article can be read as an example ofa transformational process in which ordinary rules are questioned and partly put out of play. In theworld of the bodybuilder, the marginal masculinity is, in certain senses, dominant. On the one hand, achieving a muscular and well-trained body is regarded as a core aspect of manhood within thecommunity. Marginal masculinity is thus momentarily transformed into dominant and hegemonicmasculinity. On the other hand, however, the findings also indicate that a drug-using, muscularmasculinity is constructed in negotiation with other central masculine ideals, such as the employableman and the responsible father. Found within the community is a complex and dynamic interplaybetween intersecting discourses of manhood.

  • Global narratives of fatherhood. Fathering and masculinity on the Internet
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Review of Sociology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0390-6701 .- 1469-9273. ; 26:3, s. 482-496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is currently an increasing amount of research on online fatherhood. In this article, we have used international blogs as our empirical data, in order to investigate and create an in-depth picture of fatherhood as it is expressed in various men’s stories about their everyday lives. Three distinct conceptions of fatherhood and masculinity emerge. The first of these positions could be described as a nostalgic position in relation to hegemonic masculinity. The second position is referred to here as complicity. This position indicates a changing landscape of fatherhood and family politics, moving towards gender-equal conditions. Thirdly, we have an inclusive position that reflects a gender-neutral position, and are understood less in terms of masculinity, heteronormativity and gender-divided responsibilities.

  • Glocal fitness doping : Policy, practice and prevention in the United States and Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Performance Enhancement & Health. - : Elsevier. - 2211-2669. ; 6:3-4, s. 103-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Situated within a framework of a globalized gym and fitness culture, this paper aims to investigate and compare how fitness doping can be understood in relation to, and how it is affected by, different national and local contexts. Representing different forms of welfare state regimes, the comparative analysis focuses on policy, practice, and prevention in the United States and Sweden. The findings indicate, among other things, how national level policy and implementation reflect local priorities, understandings, and values. Sweden’s choices form a pattern reflecting the priority of protecting the collective good over individual pursuits. Conversely, that the U.S. does not police outside formally governed competitions in sports or in criminal contexts. Further, U.S. bodybuilders do not feel targeted for their appearance in the same ways, illustrating the priority of individual choice. Further, the paper discusses how each country implements anti-doping in ways consistent with global policies, but are also informed by various local understandings and values. This interplay between the supranational structures and locally diverse implementation is not only complex, but can seem contradictory as each locality partly remains within a global system of anti-doping in sport, and partly operates outside this context. We suggest glocal fitness doping needs to be understood as a process through which global ideals, organisations, and more contribute to influencing local and national prevention policies and cultures, and vice versa.

  • Ingår i: Leisure/ Loisir. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1492-7713 .- 2151-2221. ; 42:3, s. 301-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this study is on the development of a globalised and localised gym and fitness culture. The article takes its point of departure from three distinct levels. These are (1) organisational aspects of the culture, (2) fitness professionals’ individual trajectories, and (3) national variations and gender regimes. The findings indicate that fitness professionalism is emerging as an uncertain profession. On the one hand there are international accreditation systems that aim to ensure the status of these professionals. On the other hand, there are simultaneous tendencies towards devaluation of the status of fitness professionals, on a global level. Partly, this can be related to the standardisation of training programmes, as well as the connectedness between the service industry and feminised gender regimes. In conclusion, the globalisation of fitness is a highly gendered process, involving national body ideals and cultural variations in how fitness professionals are valued and perceived locally.
