  • Will environmental friendly products be preferred? – Lesson from a Delphi study in Europe
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, environmentally friendly products have attracted much attention from various stakeholders. In this paper, we explore if such products are being preferred or not. We have applied a Delphi study, including an online survey and interviews with a panel of experts in Europe. The analysis of data reflects that despite the increased awareness consumers are still reluctant to pay more for them. Technologies are expected to facilitate cheaper and greener products in the middle term. Finally, stakeholders such as governments, service providers, and retailers can play more active roles in promoting the products.

  • Approach for handling heterogeneous goods in intermodal freight networks - revisited
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 13th World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR), July 15-18, Rio de Janeiro.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the 9th WCTR in Seoul, we outlined six approaches for coping with heterogeneous goods in freight networks and gave common real-world examples of Logistics Service Providers’ actions. This article is a follow-up that re-uses the conceptual framework created in 2001 to develop the theory further and to analyse how the approaches are used in real-world network operations in 2013. We have found indications that European transport of heterogeneous goods has become increasingly complex and certainly more complicated over the studied period, not least of all due to the growth in transport network size and scope. Some of the tricks used by Logistics Service Providers to cope with the heterogeneous goods are de-scribed, characterised, segmented, and analysed to arrive at relatively generalised knowledge. Finally, a case study shows how a Swedish Logistics Service Provider has changed its consolidation network to encompass logistically demanding pharmaceuticals in its general flow.

  • Empty container management in depots before and after outsourcing of container inspection - A flow and cost related comparison
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to assess the effects on outsourcing parts of the process of returning empty containers to depots. The work is based on a case study that includes review of relevant literature, semi-structured interviews and a time studies. The depot operator normally performs inspection of empty containers and administration at the gate to the depot. This in-house inspection means longer turnaround times and also a lower quality of the inspection. The depot operator then introduces a new arrangement where containers are inspected at a different location and by a third-party actor outside the depot. As a result personnel with special training carry out the inspection that leads to both a somewhat decreased inspection time and also a higher quality of the inspection. The results demonstrate that an outsourced inspection could lead to shorter turnaround times and that more efficient flows can be obtained. Additionally, an increased efficiency is achieved in the gate of the depot and for the inspection activity.

  • Heterogeneous goods in transportation systems
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents research regarding the impact differences in goods type have on the control of a transportation process. It also explores how the object-oriented family of methods are used and can be used in analysing and designing transportation systems. The aim of the research is to develop knowledge on how to control a transportation system, capable of accommodating the requirements of heterogeneous goods and to identify key factors for the design of such a system by using object-oriented methods. The theoretical framework that is used is based upon three approaches. The first approach is that of heterogeneous goods, of how differences in goods type may cause cost increases in transportation systems. The second approach is that of systems theory in general and of cybernetics in particular. The third approach is that of object-orientation. Object-oriented methods are prominent in computer programming mainly because of their aptness to efficiently partition even the most complex of computer programs into manageable, interactive, and scalable code repositories – objects. The main task when controlling a transportation system is to handle complexity. Transportation systems are inherently complex, and this complexity is divided into three types: descriptive, computational, and uncertainty-based. The control of a transportation system is divided into three control scopes, each corresponding strongly to one of the three complexity types. In this thesis, it is found that heterogeneous goods increase complexity in transportation systems, and that this complexity mainly manifests itself as uncertainty-based. When designing a transportation system, it has been shown that object-orientation can be used to reduce complexity and to embed mechanisms that contribute to further complexity reduction. Eight case studies were performed and the cases were modelled and analysed using object-orientation. This resulted in a class library that is a synthesis of the object models of all the cases and consists of diagrams that evolved during the modelling process, as is consistent with the object-oriented techniques. It is concluded that object-orientation as a modelling method is well suited for analysis and design of transportation systems.

  • In-transit services and hybrid shipment control: The use of smart goods in transportation networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research, Part C: Emerging Technologies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0968-090X. ; 36, s. 231-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes how the incremental introduction of smart goods and tracking-based information management practices enables hybrid shipment control of less-than-truckload (LTL) transport networks and the provision of in-transit services to transport-buying customers. A design theory is developed using interface modeling and discrete event simulation methodology. Interface modeling shows the types of in-transit services that are possible to introduce using smart goods. An empirically grounded simulation demonstrates how transporters can achieve incremental efficiency improvements through hybrid shipment control as customers adopt in-transit services. The results show how in-transit services offered to customers constitutes a platform on which transporters can implement hybrid shipment control, which can substantially reduce resource requirements and the carbon footprint of LTL transportation networks. The design theory articulates a strategy for simultaneously improving customer service and operating efficiency through the introduction of smart goods. The originality and value of the paper is the demonstration of how smart goods can simultaneously benefit transport-buying customers and transporters, thus showing how to overcome the bootstrapping problem of digital infrastructure creation and enabling the vision of a Physical Internet in transportation.

  • The impact of emerging and disruptive technologies on freight transportation in the digital era: current state and future trends
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Management. - 0957-4093 .- 1758-6550. ; 32:2, s. 386-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - With various challenges in the digital era, stakeholders are expressing growing interests in understanding the impact of emerging and disruptive technologies on freight transportation. This paper provides a systematic literature review of the current state of affairs as well as future trends and aims to support stakeholders' decision-making in logistics management in the era of disruptive technologies. Design/methodology/approach - Several recent and representative articles from academic, industrial and governmental perspectives were investigated to set the scene for this research and to serve as a baseline for electing nine emerging technologies, which were then used to conduct a systematic literature review covering the literature within the area during the past twelve years. Findings - 3D printing, artificial intelligence, automated robots, autonomous vehicles, big data analytics, blockchain, drones, electric vehicles and the Internet of Things were identified as the emerging technologies. The current state of existing research and potential future opportunities were analyzed. Research limitations/implications - Since the potential literature body is almost impossible to fully cover, a tradeoff between the number of emerging technologies and the related literature reviewed has been performed. However, the paper provides a novel approach to select the emerging and disruptive technologies and a systematic literature review to fill the identified research gap in the related literature. Practical implications -The research support various stakeholders to better capture the current status of and the future opportunities in freight transportation and gain a clearer understanding of the disruptive technologies as well as to guide them in how to deploy these initiatives in future decision-making. Originality/value - By providing a systematic literature review on the trends, themes and research opportunities in the era of disruptive technologies, the papers bring about broad and comprehensive review on the impact of disruptive technologies on logistics and transportation as well as opportunities to support management decision support in the logistics industry.

  • D2.5. KPIs and Evaluation Criteria. Deliverable to the AEOLIX project.
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main objective of this deliverable is to present the elements of the evaluation framework of the AEOLIX platform. From a thorough investigation of the concept Living Lab, this deliverable strives to identify what constitutes a "best practice" Living Lab for the Freight Transportation sector. The Living Lab to be implemented can be categories into three categries: 1. Hub, port, terminal, 2. Supply chain visibility and vertical control, and 3. Network optimisation, identifying management needs, data needs and putputs, and the intelligence level needed. The FESTA FOT methodology is presented as the evaluation approach adapted to freight transportation. How to determine Functions, Use Cses, Research Questions, and Hypotheses is discussed in some detail. The 11 Living Labs (LLs) are addressed, and suitable research questions are derived from the objectives of each LL. This is the first step to determine the Performance Indicator (PIs). A section on acceptance and trust is included. The iteration element will be very important to keep in mind when the use cases, research questions, hypotheses and PIs are developed. The deliverable ends with short sections on measures, data collection and evaluation criteria.

  • Access management in intermodal freight transportation: An explorative study of information attributes, actors, resources and activities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 23, s. 106-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to identify the existing and required information attributes (i.e. the actual transmitted information) that need to be exchanged between the studied hubs and hauliers to improve their access management. Access management is the management of the process of actors accessing resources for specific activities in transportation systems. A literature review on the topic is followed by semi-structured interviews and focus group meetings with key stakeholders. This results in a classification framework that categorises the information attributes into sources (actors, resources and activities) and categories (static, historical, or dynamic). The study reveals deficiencies in the information exchange between the involved actors. The main finding of this work is a comprehensive compilation of identified information attributes presented in an analytical framework. The most important required information attributes are Actual pick-up time, Hub's loading point, Hub's unloading point, Occupancy rate, and Queuing status. This study contributes to new knowledge in the disciplines Management of Freight Transport Systems, Intermodal Transport Systems and Information Systems (IS). For future research, the identified framework must be tested in real-life scenarios to measure its performance and efficiency on access management.

  • Automatic information exchange between interoperable information systems: Potential improvement of access management in a seaport terminal
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore how and when the most beneficial and cost effective information attributes can be automatically exchanged between interoperable information systems of a seaport terminal operator, a road haulier, and a rail operator to potentially improve their access management. The automatically exchange of the attributes is dependent on interoperability between information systems of the involved actors. The interoperability is achieved through a developed application programming interface in this study. This case study adds to prior research by developing a cost-benefits analysis that categorises the attributes (from low cost / low benefit to high cost / high benefit) involving four strategies: data farming, dedicated information exchange, opportunistic information exchange, and avoiding information exchange. These four strategies are important in identifying when to collect the information attributes automatically to facilitate real-time decision-making and in turn potentially improve the access management for the involved actors. is developed in this case study to enable interoperability between the information systems of involved actors. As a change management tool, the cost-benefit analysis can also be used to identify and support transformation of attributes from one category to another. The empirical study included nine workshops resulting in the identification of the most beneficial and cost effective information attributes: deviation information, direction, driver ID, estimated time of arrival, goods priority information, intermodal transport unit (ITU) ID, ITU status, opening hours, shipment ID, and vehicle ID. The attributes must be automatically exchanged according to three identified time phases: one week before, one day before, and two hours before the ITUs are to be picked up at the terminal. By exchanging these attributes between the interoperable actors´ information systems, there is potential for reducing the actors´ turnaround times, increasing their access reliability, access precision, and access flexibility. Finally, two propositions are formulated from the empirical findings and in relation to prior research results.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: NOFOMA 2016 - Proceedings Of The 28th Annual Nordic Logistics Research Network Conference, pp. 161-176. ; , s. 161-176
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this study is to design a framework for differentiated access management in intermodal transportation that makes evaluation of the efficiency of access management possible.Design/methodology/approachBased on a literature study and empirical data collection (semi-structured interviews with haulier operators, port operators and terminal operators), the term access management is defined and described from a road haulage perspective. Methods for improving access management are discussed.FindingsThis study has defined an access management framework has been defined and contains a ranking scale with seven levels: from 0 (no access management) to 6 (excellent access management). In addition, the empirical findings show that trucks have the worse developed access management compared to train and vessels. Research limitations/implicationsThe access management framework helps decision makers with two particular tasks: firstly, identifying their own level of access management, and secondly, describing how to improve it. Improved access management allows decision makers to prioritise resources and make better decisions. Original/valueThe defined framework will give researchers and decision makers indications of the levels of access management a certain access management method has. With the identified potential effects of four existing methods (in use by industry), this framework can help decisions makers to improve their access management.

  • Differentiation of access management services at seaport terminals: Facilitating potential improvements for road hauliers
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport Geography. - : Elsevier BV. - 0966-6923. ; 70, s. 256-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plagued by congestion and long turnaround times, road hauliers' access to seaport terminals suffers from inefficient seaport terminal and haulier operations, poor information flows between hauliers and seaport terminals and a lack of high-quality, real-time data. To address hauliers' poor access management at seaport terminals, five access management services provided by different seaport terminals worldwide were identified as part of an ongoing conversation about such services. This paper offers new insights to both scholars and practitioners by differentiating the services according to the elements of turnaround time, access reliability, access precision and access flexibility, characteristics of which were identified during a review of relevant literature. The potential impacts of the elements for each access management service were investigated during empirical studies involving six semi-structured interviews and two workshops with participants (i.e. two hauliers and a seaport terminal). The chief finding is that access management services able to exchange information in real time have greater potential to improve access management for road hauliers.
