• Highlighting identities and creativity by cultural planningThe importance of a vital culture is frequently discussed in relation to the development of dynamic places and regions. Richard Florida (2002), for instance, maintains that the link between culture, creativity and growth are central to places. The development potential in regional economy is considered to be the cultural capital of the creative class.Increasingly, the physical environment in community planning and architecture is interwoven with cultural expression and a higher degree of aesthetics to attract future inhabitants and to keep people from leaving the place, on the one hand, and to increase the number of visitors and investors with a view to create economic growth, on the other. Place developers, in other words, are at work to create effective markers and stories as well as an attractive environment. This type of strategic planning can be criticised from several perspectives. Strategy is a balancing act between preserving and cultivating the history of a place, its specific features and identity-that is, place culture-and to “sell” the place to visitors, in-migrants and companies. Moreover, Florida’s notion of development rests implicitly on the assumption that the people expected are those with cultural or economic capital. This means that there are including and excluding aspects in the argument that need to be considered. The described view on development and planning of places has led to an increased interest in alternative planning methods. Especially one case in the city of Karlstad, Sweden, is analysed. The project is inspired by a cultural planning method. Cultural planning involves taking the cultural perspective into account in community planning. The method is primarily a grass-root model based on the local community, its values and resources. By means of active cultural planning at the residential/district area level, the Karlstad project aims to develop forms and methods for implementing artistic designs and cultural activities to produce attractive neighbourhoods and enhance the quality of life for the residents. An expectation is an increased social sustainable development. The City of Karlstad also wants to raise its attraction level and ensure a positive development for future residents by testing cultural planning and the related community art methods. The present paper is based on an on-going evaluation and research of the Karlstad project.Key words: Cultural planning, place development, culture, identity, creativity.

• Decentralised place branding through multiple authors and narratives : the collective branding of a small town in Sweden
• 2022
• Ingår i: Journal of Marketing Management. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0267-257X .- 1472-1376.
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Increasingly, place branding is regarded as stakeholder-centric, participatory and inclusive. However, a central assumption permeates the place-branding literature that there is a dominant organisation of some sort working strategically to organise the place-branding process. In this article we question this assumption and explore how multiple 'authors' create narratives and contribute to the branding of places. Using interviews, observations and printed and online material, we study a small town in southwest Sweden. Our illustrative case study reveals a decentralised collective production of narratives by multiple authors that together constitute the branding of a place.

• Alternative perspectives on rural development growth
• 2014
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Alternative perspectives on rural development and growthLotta Braunerhielm (lotta.braunerhielm@kau.se), Eva Olsson (eva.olsson@kau.se) and Lars Aronsson (lars.aronsson@kau.se)What picture of Urban and rural areas that are marked are central. During the last decades the city has been seen as the area of possibilities and rural areas as "the problem". Our thesis is that urban areas have possibilities for social and economic innovations in cooperation with the city if you take a different perspective on growth than the generally used perspective. This includes everything from resources, products, services, social entrepreneurship to aspects of living environment. How can for example experience-based competence, social relations, living areas and lifestyle-satisfaction be upgraded? How can you develop areas and use different combinations of social, economic, cultural and symbolic capital? A widened definition of growth includes robust social, economic but even ecological dimensions. Our main purpose is to study a perspective of possibilities for the growth of periphery in cooperation with the city. The purpose has a strong connection to the goals of Europe 2020 concerning development and especially the alternative way of looking at growth. Our study focuses on Sweden and Norway. The countries have different circumstances because of different regional policies, laws and cultures etc. There is cooperation and dynamics between the continuum city - periphery, for example concerning widened labor market areas. The area of our concern is placed in the tension between the capital Oslo in Norway and the region center Karlstad in Sweden. What does this mean for the peripheral area in between? Our purpose is to identify possibilities and needs which will end up in new strategies for economic and social development which in the long run can result in better support end basis for political decisions as well as basis and support for regional political actions. We also anticipate that the use of an alternative definition of growth will give unexpected results and effects compared to the dominant definition of growth. Our goal is furthermore that our research will contribute to social innovations and social entrepreneurship which will be debated and which will feed politicians with arguments for sustainable development. The project is based on earlier research and cooperation with Cerut from Karlstad University and Ostlandsforskning from Norway and is partly based on results from earlier studies. This project will form the basis for further studies in order to utilize and strengthen border region's collective resources, and linking together urban and rural areas across the border.

• Meeting increased logistical demands : Developing as a small- and medium-sized system supplier
• 2009
• Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Many subcontractors choose to implement a strategy of “system supply” in order to meetincreasing global competition. They are then confronted with increased demands to take agreater overall responsibility in this role. It is important to investigate the implications of theseresponsibilities before investing in developing the organization, especially for a small- ormedium-sized subcontractor with limited resources. The customer’s view of different demandsdoes not necessarily correspond to how the supplier sees and chooses to interpret and meetthose demands. A supplier with several customers has to create reasonably uniform routines tomeet different demands, in order to cut costs. The customers chosen to serve as well asattitudes and priorities may influence the way different customer demands are met. Thepurpose of this study is to describe what the widened role of system supply might mean to asmall- or medium-sized subcontractor in terms of demands, capabilities and resources. After going through previous theory about different supplier roles and their characteristics asmall exploratory survey comparing demands between a component supplier and a systemsupplier was carried out. “System supplier” is, in this thesis, defined as a supplier with anoverall responsibility for the functionality of a product or a system of assembled components, produced in several process steps, and the resulting liability for purchase of material andservices. The focus is on small- or medium-sized suppliers that provide production services andare developing towards system supplying capabilities. The survey, based on existing customeragreements and demands on a relatively small supplier that is developing towards a systemsupplying role, gives insight to how customers and suppliers look at these demands. The resultsclearly point out some improvement areas. These are divided into a few “system demands”(such as systematic purchase and logistics work, product development and projectmanagement, and increased responsibilities) and more “generic demands” (for example qualityand delivery-precision).A small- or medium-sized subcontractor must acquire some logistics capabilities in order tocope with the system supplying role. In a multiple case study, a comparison of three companiesof different sizes with varying degrees of system supplying services is presented. With theresource-based view as a linchpin the interviews point out the importance of the management’sstrategic alignment to supply chain management and logistics, with special focus on centralsourcing and sourcing from low-cost regions. Other capabilities such as IT and communicationsystems, cost reduction capability, volume flexibility and breadth of product lines are alsoidentified. The interviews also served the purpose of identifying important resources groupedinto three different categories: organizational, competence-base, and tools. The differencesbetween the companies and in what way these different resources influence the formation ofdifferent logistics capabilities to support system supply are discussed. The conclusions drawn from comparing the three companies point out five system capabilities. One is the importance of a clear and distinct organization where the management understandsits role and responsibilities, managing its part of a larger system and its inherent processes.Supply chain management is another important system capability, where logistics skills andenhanced understanding and use of IT and other tools are identified as areas to improve for thesmaller companies. The importance of managing internal and external relations with extrafocus on customer relations is stressed. This also generally requires more overall managementof communications, making the best possible use of existing information and communicationstechnology. Finally, a basic and order-qualifying capability of managing the “genericdemands” is emphasized.

• Towards System Supply : Development of Small and Medium-Sized Contract Manufacturers
• 2017
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• One way for a small subcontractor to meet increasing global competition is to develop a system supplying ability, implying a transition in the supply chain toward a larger overall responsibility. As large corporations outsource parts of their manufacturing and services, many small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) suppliers are expected to deepen their capabilities and take on the role of system suppliers. The overall purpose of this thesis is to advance the understanding of how SME contract manufacturers can develop such capabilities, identifying demands and abilities in various steps of this process. The research approach is based on the resource-based view. This longitudinal case study of an SME supplier striving to become a system supplier covers the period from 2006 to 2014. The researcher’s role as business developer and member of the management made it possible to follow the company's development continuously and closely, providing access to relevant internal data complemented with internal and external semi structured interviews and focus discussions. The longitudinal aspect is evident in the overall description of the development of the focal supplier. More specific issues are covered in the separate studies, described in the appended articles.SME suppliers need basic capabilities of qualitative production performance as stepping-stones to develop more system supplier capabilities for added customer value. Development of stable production processes through lean implementation was by the focal supplier seen as a way to reach stable basic performance and to enable continuous development. The study further shows that knowledge integration with customers is an effective means to build system capability and indicates a stepwise and sequential process of developing specific supplier capabilities. The longitudinal case study deepens the knowledge of development of SME system suppliers and specifically point out three prerequisites that need to be in place for the supplier transition: (1) a capability of the supplier to manage internal processes of standardisation and continuous improvements for stable performance without disruptions, (2) a capability to collaborate in development projects with a limited number of customers, and (3) customer commitment to a long-term relationship. A customer demanding improvements is constantly driving its suppliers to better performance and proven supplier capabilities in turn promotes long-term customer commitment. The most essential component in supplier development is a competent and strategically oriented management, capable of identifying the specific system supplier offerings appropriate for the particular company in order to create customer value. This study contributes to better understanding of the conditions of medium-sized contract manufacturing SMEs, from a supplier perspective, and contributes to SCM research in illustrating how shifting responsibilities and subsequent activities in the supply chain may pave new competitive paths for SMEs. One issue here is the importance of knowledge integration for the development of supply chains. This has not often been discussed within SCM and thus provides a contribution to this theory.

• Cellular responses to cobalt-chrome and CP titanium - an in vitro comparison of frameworks for implant-retained oral prostheses : Cellreaktioner mot broskelett för implantatretinerade konstruktioner av kobolt-kromlegering och kommersiellt rent titan. En jämförande in vitro-studie.
• 2011
• Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. ; 35:4/11, s. 169-244
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The responses of cell types in peri-implant tissues to cobalt-chrome and titanium were studied in vitro. Cylinders were made from both a cobalt-chrome alloy and commercially pure titanium (length 6 mm, diameter 7.9 mm). Plastic tubes were placed over the cylinders to create cell culture wells, in which human epithelial cells or mouse fibroblasts were cultivated. Cell viability was studied using the Alamar Blue™ method. The surface structure of two samples of each material was analyzed with optical interferometry. The morphology of cells grown on cylinders of each material was studied with scanning electronic microscopy. Epithelial cells and fibroblasts in the titanium group were more viable than those in the cobalt-chrome group (p = 0.001 and p = 0.000, respectively). The titanium surfaces had a greater height deviation (Sa, p = 0.027) but were less dense (Sds, p = 0.044) than the cobalt-chrome group. The scanning electronic microscopy revealed no major deviations from normal cell morphology. Within the limitations of the present study, the findings indicate that epithelial cells as well as fibroblasts have a stronger negative response to cobalt-chrome alloy than to titanium. We suggest that these differences can be explained only by the material per se and not by the minor differences in surface structure. Further and clinical studies are needed to confirm the significance of these findings.

• Afterlife - ontology and the making of continuing bonds
• 2014
• Ingår i: Book of Abstracts. Interdisciplinary conference Images of Afterlife October 22–24, 2014 Conference venue: Sirkkala campus, Kaivokatu 12, University of Turku.
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Afterlife-ontology and the making of continuing bonds This presentation explores the co-construction of after life-ontology by mediums and people turning to mediums, particularly ontology which facilitate for the making of continuing bonds. By extension, the questions addressed taps into larger discussions about re-enchantment, spirituality and relationships with the dead, but they are at the same time related to intimacy, meaning and intelligibility. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews as well as conversations found on sites where after life-issues are discussed. Themes examined include experiences of the deceased as still present, imagery of the afterlife in terms of space, temporality, agents and agency, and perceptions of the possibilities to interact. The overall purpose of the presentation is to show how different ontological notions and on-going negotiations about how, where and why the deceased continue to exist result in variations when it comes to the enactment of continuing bonds. Continuing bonds are usually investigated as features of everyday life, most notably in the form of experiences of the dead as somehow present, but also as constituted by various memorialization practices. These bonds may be a way of preserving life as they know it for the living, but they can also fill other existential needs. Although continuing bonds have been explored in the context of mediumship and spiritualism before, the interest here taken in ontological elements such as agency, space and interaction enable for a more thorough investigation of what sort of continuing bonds can be developed. The interest in co-construction, i.e. how notions and imageries are shaped (and challenged) collectively, also adds to the analytical scope. (PhD) Annika Jonsson, Dep. of Social and Psychological Studies, Karlstad University. annika.jonsson@kau.se(Prof.) Lars Aronsson, Dep. of human geography, media and communication, Karlstad University. lars.aronsson@kau.se

• Comparative studies on the expression of somatostatin receptor subtypes, outcome of octreotide scintigraphy and response to octreotide treatment in patients with carcinoid tumours.
• 1998
• Ingår i: British journal of cancer. - 0007-0920. ; 77:4, s. 632-7
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We have compared the expression of somatostatin receptor (sstr) subtypes with the outcome of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and the effect of somatostatin receptor activation in patients with disseminated carcinoid tumours. Tumour tissues from nine patients with midgut carcinoids (ileal) and three patients with foregut carcinoids (gastric, thymic) were analysed using Northern blotting. Expression of somatostatin receptors was demonstrated in all tumours (12 out of 12), with all five receptor subtypes present in 9 out of 12 tumours. Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy using [111In]DTPA-D-Phe1-octreotide visualized tumours in all patients (12 out of 12). The 111In activity concentrations in tumour tissue (T) and blood (B) were determined in three tumours 1-7 days after injection of the radionuclide. The T/B 111In activity concentration ratios ranged between 32 and 651. Clinically, treatment with the long-acting somatostatin analogue octreotide resulted in marked symptom relief accompanied by a significant reduction in tumour markers, for example urinary-5-HIAA levels (28-71% reduction). Incubation of midgut carcinoid tumours in primary culture with octreotide (10 microM) resulted in a reduction in spontaneously secreted serotonin (45-71% reduction) and 5-HIAA (41-94% reduction). The results demonstrate that carcinoid tumours possess multiple somatostatin receptor subtypes and that somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, which preferentially bind to somatostatin receptor subtype 2 and 5, can be used in the diagnosis and medical treatment of these tumours. In the future, novel somatostatin analogues with subtype specific receptor profiles may prove to be of value for individualizing the treatment of disseminated carcinoid tumour disease.

• Importance of vesicle proteins in the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.
• 2004
• Ingår i: Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0077-8923 .- 1749-6632. ; 1014, s. 280-3
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We have analyzed the expression of synaptic vesicle proteins in human neuroendocrine tumors and the potential use of vesicle proteins in the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors. Biopsies from endocrine and nonendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and adrenals were examined by immunocytochemistry using antibodies against synaptic vesicle protein 2 (SV2), vesicular monoamine transporter 1 and 2 (VMAT1 and 2), and neuroendocrine secretory protein 55 (NESP55). SV2 was expressed in all endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas as well as in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). None of the adenocarcinomas expressed SV2. VMAT1 and 2 were expressed in amine-producing tumors of the gastrointestinal tract (ECL cell and EC cell carcinoids) and in a small number of peptide-producing pancreatic endocrine tumors. NESP55 was expressed in neuroblastomas and adrenal pheochromocytomas as well as in a subgroup of pancreatic endocrine tumors. The importance of VMAT1 and 2 for the uptake of 123I-MIBG in tumor cells was demonstrated. It was concluded that neuroendocrine tumors express multiple synaptic vesicle proteins that are useful in the histopathological diagnosis and classification of tumors. Vesicle proteins may prove to be useful for targeting tumor therapy.

• Kulturella sektorn i Arvika : En kartläggning av kulturell verksamhet och samarbete inom Arvika kommun
• 2010

• A 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy study in adults with obsessive compulsive disorder: relationship between metabolite concentrations and symptom severity.
• 2008

• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) studies exploring brain metabolites, especially glutamine + glutamate (Glx), in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are of vital interest for trying to understand more about the pathophysiology of OCD. Therefore, we conducted the present 1H MRS study with the aims of (1) comparing MRS metabolites in a group of adult patients with OCD and a group of healthy controls, and (2) examining the relationship between MRS metabolite concentrations and symptom severity in the patient group. Three brain regions were studied, the right caudate nucleus, the anterior gyrus cinguli and the occipital cortex bilaterally. Since multivariate analysis is a highly useful tool for extraction of 1H MRS data, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square projection to latent structures (PLS) to the MRS data. PLS disclosed a strong relationship between several of the metabolites and OCD symptom severity, as measured with Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale (YBOCS): the YBOCS score was found to be positively correlated to caudate creatine, Glx, glutamate, and choline compounds as well as occipital cortex myoinositol, and negatively correlated to occipital cortex Glx. The negative correlation between occipital cortex Glx and YBOCS was the most impressive. PCA did not reveal any tendency for a separation between the patients with OCD and controls with respect to MRS metabolites. The results are discussed in relation to corticostriatothalamocortical feedback and previous observations of poor visuospatial ability in OCD.

• Anterior to posterior hippocampal MRS metabolite difference is mainly a partial volume effect.

• Ingår i: Acta radiologica. - : SAGE Publications. - 1600-0455 .- 0284-1851. ; 51:3, s. 351-359
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• BACKGROUND: The concentration of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) in hippocampus, as measured with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and the ratio of NAA/(choline (Cho) + creatine (Cr)) are valuable tools in the lateralization of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). MRS of hippocampus is also increasingly used to study certain psychiatric and degenerative diseases. However, the reliability of such measurements of hippocampus has been questioned. PURPOSE: To re-evaluate MRS imaging data from prior control subjects with regard to variation of metabolite concentrations in hippocampus from anterior to posterior and the partial volume (R)contribution to the measurements from adjacent tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve healthy subjects, mean age 33 years, were studied with MRS imaging. The measurement volume was angled along the temporal horns and metabolite concentration images were reconstructed at the MR system. Regions of interest (ROIs) in the anterior, medial, and posterior parts of both hippocampi were evaluated. Signal normalization to the total MRS signal from all ROIs permitted pooling of individual data with different and unknown signal scaling. One subject was re-examined with a high resolution three-dimensional (3D) volume of the brain for evaluation of partial volumes in the MRS examination. RESULTS: Overall, there were significantly lower concentrations of NAA in the anterior parts, and of (Cho+Cr) in the posterior parts, while the NAA/(Cho+Cr) ratio in the posterior parts of the mesial temporal lobes was significantly higher. Hippocampus accounted for one-half, one-third, and one-quarter of the anterior, middle, and posterior ROIs, respectively. The NAA/(Cho+Cr) ratio thus showed a reverse relationship to the relative volume of hippocampal tissue within the ROI. CONCLUSION: Metabolite concentrations in the mesial temporal lobe obtained with MRS imaging represent the mean value of hippocampus and a considerable amount of adjacent tissue. To assess the hippocampus alone, an actual voxel well below 1 cm(3) and a sub-centimeter slice thickness are required.

• We carried out spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) on nine consecutive patients with temporal lobe epilepsy being assessed for epilepsy surgery, and nine neurologically healthy, age-matched volunteers. A volume of interest (VOI) was angled along the temporal horns on axial and sagittal images, and symmetrically over the temporal lobes on coronal images. Images showing the concentrations of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and of choline-containing compounds plus creatine and phosphocreatine (Cho + Cr) were used for lateralisation. We compared assessment by visual inspection and by signal analysis from regions of interest (ROI) in different positions, where side-to-side differences in NAA/(Cho + Cr) ratio were used for lateralisation. The NAA/ (Cho + Cr) ratio from the different ROI was also compared with that in the brain stem to assess if the latter could be used as an internal reference, e. g., for identification of bilateral changes. The metabolite concentration images were found useful for lateralisation of temporal lobe abnormalities related to epilepsy. Visual analysis can, with high accuracy, be used routinely. ROI analysis is useful for quantifying changes, giving more quantitative information about spatial distribution and the degree of signal loss. There was a large variation in NAA/ (Cho + Cr) values in both patients and volunteers. The brain stem may be used as a reference for identification of bilateral changes.
