  • Exploring the Magnetism of Ultra Thin 3d Transition Metal Films
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis the magnetic and structural properties of ultra-thin 3d transition metals films have been investigated, in particular Fe, Ni and Co films. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) has provided element specific spin (ms ) and orbital (ml ) moments per atom by utilizing the magneto optic sum-rules. Element specific hysteresis curves have been measured by means of X-ray Resonant Magnetic Scattering (XRMS), and the local crystallographic structure has been investigated using Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS).By performing XMCD on Fe/Ag(100) we observe a spin reorientation from in-plane to out-of-plane as the Fe thickness is lowered. At temperatures below 300K it occurs around 5-7 mono layers (ML) of Fe. While reorienting the magnetization out-of-plane the orbital moment increases with 125% but only a minor increase (5%) of the spin moment is observed. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements indicate that films 6 ML and thicker have a bulk-like bcc structure. For the thin out-of-plane films, the local crystallographic structure is more complicated. The spin reorientation of the Au/Co/Au tri-layer system has been studied as a function of temperature, Co layer and Au cap thickness. An unexpected behavior of the orbital moment upon spin reorientation is found in these systems. An ex-situ prepared sample shows a smooth spin reorientation from an in-plane to an out-of-plane easy magnetization direction as the temperature is lowered from 300K to 200K. In-situ prepared samples have also been investigated and a novel phase diagram has been identified. The Au/Co interface has been explored during the Au capping by means of photoemission measurements. In the bi- and tri-layer system of Fe and Ni we have been able to manipulate the spin reorientation by varying the Fe and Ni thickness. A novel non-collinear interlayer exchange interaction for 3d ferro magnets in direct contact has been discovered for a set of samples. This exchange interaction is found to be strongly dependant on the preparation conditions.

  • Influence of ligand states on the relationship between orbital moment and magnetocrystalline anisotropy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 99:17, s. 177207-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spin and orbital moments of Au/Co/Au trilayers grown on a W(110) single crystal substrate have been investigated by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Our findings suggest that the orbital moment of Co does not obtain a maximum value along the easy axis, in contrast with previous experience. This is attributed to the large spin-orbit interaction within the Au caps. Both second order perturbation theory and first principles calculations show how the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) is dramatically influenced by this effect, and how this leads to the fact that the orbital moment anisotropy is not proportional to the MCA.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 19:24, s. 4375-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for producing self-organised arrays of nanometric metallic dots is reported. It consists on developing first the nanodot pattern by ion erosion on a semiconductor cover film and transferring it to a previously buried metallic layer. This procedure has been applied to Co, and the ferromagnetic behaviour of the dots at room temperature is demonstrated.

  • Magnetism and Structure of Thin 3d Transition Metal Films : XMCD and EXAFS using Polarized Soft X-Rays
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this Thesis the magnetic and structural properties of thin epitaxial Fe, Co, and Ni films are discussed. Some of the in-situ prepared samples were used to characterize the degree of circular polarization of the newly installed beamline D1011 at MAX-lab. By means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and utilizing the associated magneto optic sum rules, the orbital (ml) and spin (ms) moments are determined directly in mB/atom with elemental specificity. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements yield site specific information on the local crystallographic structure. These measurements were performed using the circular x-rays of several beamlines. The influence of the degree of spatial source coherence lspat of the x-rays was characterized by means of Fresnel diffractometry. A correlation between enhanced XAS white line intensities and higher values of lspat was established for 20 ML Fe, Co, and Ni films on Cu(100).The degree of circularly polarized x-rays (Pc) at beamline D1011 at MAX-lab was characterized by studying Fe films on Cu(100) by means of XMCD. The maximum value of Pc is experimentally determined to Pc =0.85.The Au/Co/Au trilayer system was studied as a function of Co thickness, temperature, and Au cap thickness. A 10 mono-layer (ML) Co film, with an Au cap of 20 Å, shows a spin reorientation transition (SRT) from an in-plane to an out-of-plane easy direction as the temperature is lowered from 300 K to 200 K. The magnetic properities of these Co films are very different to what is found for bulk samples due to, in particular, the broken symmetry at the interfaces. The thickness dependent spin reorientation transition in the Fe/Ag(100) system was characterized by means of XMCD and EXAFS measurements. 3 ML Fe films show an out-of-plane easy direction with an 125% enhanced orbital moment as compared to the 25 ML Fe in-plane film. Simulations of the Fe L-edge EXAFS indicate the bulk Fe bcc structure for film thicknesses of 6-25 ML Fe. For 3 ML Fe strong deviations from this bcc phase is observed.Ultrathin Co films deposited on flat and vicinal Cu(111) in the thickness region 1-25 ML were studied by means of XMCD and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The vicinal Cu(111) Co deposition leads to the formation of elongated islands preferentially oriented along the step edges. In connection to this particular Co growth mode we observe an increase of both the orbital and the spin moment on the vicinal Cu(111) of about 25% relative to what was observed for Co on flat Cu(111).

  • Structure and magnetism of ultrathin epitaxial Fe on Ag(100)
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 73:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have made in-situ investigations of ultrathin films of Fe grown on a Ag(100) single crystal. This system is known to exhibit a reorientation of the magnetization, dependent on both Fe thickness and temperature. X-ray absorption fine structure has been recorded for samples prepared in-situ, both in the near edge and in the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) region. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we found that Fe films between 2-5 monolayers show an out-of-plane remanent magnetization. For thicker films the magnetization lies in-plane. By applying the magneto-optical sum rules we found an enhancement of the orbital moment (m(l)) for the out-of-plane phase, whereas the spin moment (m(s)) is unchanged. From the Fe L-edge EXAFS, we obtain information on the local crystallographic structure. A strong correlation between the local crystallographic structure and the magnetic properties is found for the Fe/Ag(100) system. Variations in the nearest neighbor distance of similar to 0.15 angstrom are observed when comparing 3 ML and 25 ML films. By comparison to simulations performed with the FEFF 8.10 code, we can identify a bcc structure for 6-25 ML Fe on Ag(100). For the 3 ML Fe film our simulations indicate strong deviations from any structure derived along the Bain path. We conclude that intermixing and distortion are important to describe the structure in this thickness range.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Nanometer-Scale Science and Technology and the 21st European Conference on Surface Science. ; , s. 76-81
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have made in situ investigations of epitaxial ultrathin Fe films on Ag(1 0 0). This system is known to exhibit a reorientation of the magnetization, dependent of Fe thickness and temperature. Our aim here is to correlate the local structure with the magnetic properties of this system. The X-ray absorption fine structure has been recorded in situ both in the near edge as well as in the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) range. Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism we find that, below 300 K, films between 2 and 6 monolayers show an out-of-plane remanent magnetization whereas for thicker films the magnetization lies in-plane. By making use of the Fe L-edge EXAFS we obtain information on the local structure around the Fe atoms, such as the interatomic distances, the coordination number, and the mean square relative displacement of the first neighbor shells.

  • Elliptically polarised soft X-rays produced using a local bump in MAX II characterisation of the degree of polarisation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 705, s. 65-68
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MAX-lab has introduced a local perturbation to the electron orbit of the MAX II storage ring, providing users at the SX700 monochromator beam line, D1011, with elliptically polarised soft X-rays. This is achieved by using corrector magnets to send the electron orbit on an ascending or descending trajectory through the dipole magnet source. This simple "bump" approach has many advantages over and above insertion device based solutions. To illustrate the potential of the approach, the degree of circular polarisation, Pc, has both been calculated and measured. The calculation was made by applying the Stokes formalism to the intensities given by the standard dipole emission formula. Experimentally Pc was characterised using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. In such experiments magnetic contrast scales directly proportional to Pc. Using a 25 atomic layer bcc Fe film deposited on the Cu(100) surface as a calibration standard the spin moment, ms, was determined. By comparing the values of ms obtained here with those reported earlier, the degree of circular polarisation could be estimated. At ~715 eV the calculated and measured values of Pc are 0.93 and 0.85, respectively

  • Vanishing Magnetic Interactions in Ferromagnetic Thin Films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 94:21, s. 217202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used element-specific hysteresis measurements, based on the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism technique, to investigate magnetic trilayer structures composed of Fe and Ni layers. Within a critical regime we have discovered a class of structures in which the exchange interaction, the mechanism responsible for the macroscopic magnetism, can become vanishingly small. The experimental observations are supported by first principles theory and are explained as arising from a cancellation of several competing magnetic interactions. Hence, we have discovered a system with a novel exchange interaction between magnetic layers in direct contact that replaces the conventional exchange interaction in ferromagnets.

    • Spinel-type compounds of Fe-Ni-Sb-O system were synthesized as polycrystalline powders. The crystal and magnetic properties were investigated using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, Mossbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The samples crystallize in the cubic system, space group Fd - 3 m. The distribution of cations between octahedral and tetrahedral sites was refined from the diffraction data sets using constraints imposed by the magnetic, Mossbauer and EDS results and the ionic radii. The cation distribution and the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter (a) and the oxygen positional parameter (u) were obtained. A chemical formula close to Fe0.8Ni1.8Sb0.4O4 was determined, with Sb5+ cations occupying octahedral sites, and Fe3+ and Ni2+ occupying both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Fe3+ mainly (85/15 ratio) occupy tetrahedral sites, and conversely Ni2+ mainly reside on octahedral ones. The magnetic unit cell is the same as the crystallographic one, having identical symmetry relations. The results indicate that the compounds have a collinear ferrimagnetic structure with antiferromagnetic coupling between the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites. Uniquely, the temperature dependence of the net magnetization of this rare earth free ferrimagnet exhibits a compensation point.

  • Magnetic ordering in an (Fe0.2Cr0.8)(1.5)[Cr(CN)(6)] Prussian blue analogue studied with synchrotron radiation based spectroscopies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 6:30, s. 8171-8186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The appearance of magnetic order in the (Fe0.2Cr0.8)(1.5)[Cr(CN)(6)]center dot 15H(2)O Prussian blue analogue at low temperature has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. With the help of ligand field multiplet analysis we have been able to identify the oxidation states of the metallic cations present in the sample and their evolution with temperature. Our experiments reveal that the appearance of ferromagnetic order is triggered by the transformation of Cr-III cations to Cr-II high-spin caused by a transfer of electrons from the Fe to the Cr resulting in an increase of the magnetic interactions within the (Cr, Cr) sublattice. The misfit strain between the (Fe, Cr) and the (Cr, Cr) moieties that coexist within this ternary material influences the balance of oxidation states and hence the magnetic properties of the metallic ions. Misfit relaxation also plays a role in determining the differences between the surface and the bulk of the material. The measurement of the magnetic moments in those two regions suggests that the surface may have a reduced Curie temperature compared to the bulk.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 7:8, s. 2305-2317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most attractive characteristics of some Prussian blue derivatives is the sensitivity of their magnetic properties to the irradiation with light. In this work photoinduced effects in the (Fe0.2Cr0.8)(1.5)[Cr(CN)(6)]15H(2)O PBA have been studied by means of X-ray-based spectroscopies and magnetometry. It is found that the photosensitivity of this compound is mostly centred on the Fe cations: the exposure to green light induces a transfer of electrons from them to the Cr that provokes a reversal of the previously existing linkage isomerization and increases the elastic strain caused by the misfit of the unit cells of the Fe-NC-Cr and Cr-NC-Cr sublattices. The green light also quenches the magnetism of the Fe-II high-spin (HS) ions present in the sample and reduces the magnetic moments of most of the Cr cations except for Cr-II HS. Our study highlights the important role played by the mismatch between the unit cells of the coexisting sub-lattices in ternary Prussian blue analogues.

    • We present soft x-ray absorption spectra from a series of Co doped ZnO films. We discuss systematic variations of the Co L-edge white line intensity and multiplet features for this series of samples. We document sizeable differences in the electronic state of the Co ionic cores, as well as in the local environment of the host lattice atoms, characterised by means of x-ray absorption spectra at the O K-edge and Zn L-edges. Model calculations allow to correlate the observed effects to small structural distortions of the ZnO lattice.

    • We characterise the magnetism of self-assembled FenN nanocrystals, combining core level spectroscopy with first-principles theory. Not only ferromagnetic but also antiferromagnetic iron nitride nanocrystals are identified, exhibiting stable magnetic properties at room temperature. New stable magnetic phases are found, previously believed to order magnetically only well below room temperature. As determined by the growth conditions, several phases of magnetic FenN nanocrystals are identified in the near surface region of GaN based thin films, with typical dimensions from 50 to 100 nm, embedded in the (Ga,Fe)N lattice or residing on the GaN surface. We determine, at room temperature, Fe4N and Fe3N ferromagnetic nanocrystals, as well as Fe2N and FeN nanocrystals in an antiferromagnetic state, which is not stable at room temperature in their bulk phases.

    • We report on the characterization of the new I1011 beamline at the MAX-II storage ring, in the MAX-lab synchrotron radiation laboratory and give examples of first results. This beamline is using an Elliptically Polarizing Undulator source, producing soft x-rays of a variable polarization state. It delivers high flux and high brightness circularly polarized x-rays in the energy range 0.2 to 1.7 keV, covering the L-edges of the late 3d elements. The new beamline will operate with an octupole magnet endstation. It is specially engineered to solve the problem of the limited optical access typically associated with magnetic fields and synchrotron radiation endstations. Eight water-cooled magnets allow the application of the magnetic field of up to 1 T in any direction. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray resonant reflectivity and the corresponding magnetic variants, i.e., XMCD, XMLD and XRMS experiments are possible also under an applied magnetic field. The high flux allows working with dilute magnetic systems such as ultra-thin films and nano structures.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 106:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural and magnetic properties of MnSb layers grown on two   differently oriented GaAs substrates are reported. The MnSb compounds   grow nonhomogenously both on GaAs (111) B and on GaAs (100) substrates.   In x-ray diffraction studies the formation of two epitaxial domains is   observed depending on the crystallographic orientation of the   substrate. The observed diffusion of Ga atoms from the substrate to the   layers results in the formation of an additional Mn-rich cubic phase of   GaMnSb. In the case of the (100) oriented substrate, the diffusion of   Mn into the substrate was additionally found. Traces of other phases   were also noticed. The complex morphology of the layers is found to   influence their magnetic properties. Magnetic force microscopy images   revealed an inhomogenous distribution of the magnetic force gradient on   the surface and the formation of magnetic domains in the samples. X-ray   absorption studies of the chemical bonding and local atomic structure   around Mn atoms confirmed high structural and chemical disorder in the   samples. The chemical bonding of the dominating fraction of Mn atoms is   found, however, similar to that in the reference MnSb powder. The x-ray   magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal an enhanced orbital   moment and a reduced spin moment, which is most likely caused by the   presence of different phases and a Mn-rich surface in the investigated   samples.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents, using Bi doped ZnO, an example of a heavy ion doped oxide semiconductor, highlighting a novel p-symmetry interaction of the electronic states to stabilize ferromagnetism. The study includes both ab initio theory and experiments, which yield clear evidence for above room temperature ferromagnetism. ZnBixO1-x thin films are grown using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The room temperature ferromagnetism finds its origin in the holes introduced by the Bi doping and the p-p coupling between Bi and the host atoms. A sizeable magnetic moment is measured by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the O K-edge, probing directly the spin polarization of the O(2p) states. This result is in agreement with the theoretical predictions and inductive magnetometry measurements. Ab initio calculations of the electronic and magnetic structure of ZnBixO1-x at various doping levels allow to trace the origin of the ferromagnetic character of this material. It appears, that the spin-orbit energy of the heavy ion Bi stabilizes the ferromagnetic phase. Thus, ZnBixO1-x doped with a heavy non-ferromagnetic element, such as Bi, is a credible example of a candidate material for a new class of compounds for spintronics applications, based on the spin polarization of the p states.

    • The adsorption of purely organic chiral molecules on ferromagnetic Co thin films is studied under ultra high vacuum conditions by means of synchrotron radiation-based electron spectroscopies, namely X-ray absorption and ultraviolet photoemission. X-ray absorption reveals that enantiomers with opposite handedness (R,R) - and (S,S)- of two different molecules adsorb with different strength on the Co surfaces and their valence band photoemission spectra also display distinctive features. In view of the recent reports describing the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect these results lead us to consider the possibility that some enantiosensitivity may appear when bonding chiral molecules to a substrate with an initial asymmetry in the population of the different spin orientations.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 15, s. 033016-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We detect the presence of frozen magnetic moments in an exchange biased NiFe ferromagnet at the NiFe/FeMn ferromagnet/antiferromagnet interface by magnetic circular dichroism in x-ray absorption and resonant reflectivity experiments. Frozen moments are detected by means of the element-specific hysteresis loops. A weak dichroic absorption with unidirectional anisotropy can be linked to frozen magnetic moments in the ferromagnet. A more pronounced exchange bias for increasing the thickness of the FeMn layer correlates with an increase in orbital moment for interface Ni atoms carrying a frozen moment. These atoms compose about a single monolayer, but only a fraction of the atoms contributes by means of a strongly enhanced orbital moment to the macroscopic exchange bias phenomenon. The microscopic spin-orbit energy associated with these few interface frozen moment atoms appears to be sufficient to account for the macroscopic exchange bias energy.

    • We report on the effect of carbon implantation on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Fe93Zr7 (FeZr) amorphous films. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements on (FeZr)(100-x)C-x (x = 0, 5.5, and 11) indicate the incorporation of carbon in the FeZr matrix, with an increase of the Fe-Fe distance by implanting carbon. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal the creation of Fe-C bonds after implantation. A significant enhancement of the Curie temperature and decrease of the coercivity are observed in the carbon-implanted films. Moreover, the non collinear ferromagnetism of the as-grown FeZr film diminishes upon carbon implantation.

    • An x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of a polycrystalline Co/CoO   bilayer is presented. Using both the chemical specificity and surface   sensitivity in the core level techniques, we find that uncompensated   Co2+ spin moments participate in the remanent ferromagnetic response of   the bilayer that has oxygen nearest neighbors. These are likely located   at the Co/CoO interface. As intermixing of magnetic species is not   present in Co/CoO, it is concluded that the observed interface moments   are due to interface roughness. Given their direction, these moments   appear to not directly correlate to the exchange bias in these bilayers.

  • Unveiling the local structure of the amorphous metal Fe(1−x)Zrx combining first-principles-based simulations and modelling of EXAFS spectra
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amorphous alloys exhibit useful properties such as the excellent soft magnetic behaviour of Fe-based metallic glasses. The detailed structure of amorphous Fe(1−x)Zrx with x = 0.07, 0.10, and 0.20 is in this work explored through a synergetic combination of atomistic simulations and experimental characterisation. Thin-film samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), while the corresponding atomic structures were simulated using an efficient first-principles-based method called stochastic quenching (SQ). The simulated local atomic arrangements are investigated by constructing the radial- and angular-distribution functions, as well as by Voronoi tesselation. The radial distribution functions are then used to construct a model to fit simultaneously the experimental EXAFS data of multiple samples with different compositions, creating a simple yet accurate description of the atomic structures valid for any composition in the range x = 0.07 to 0.20, using a minimal number of free parameters. This approach significantly improves the accuracy of the fitted parameters and allows us to relate the compositional dependence of the amorphous structures with the magnetic properties. The proposed EXAFS fitting process can be generalised to other amorphous systems, contributing to the understanding of structure-property relationships and the development of amorphous alloys with tailored functional properties.

  • Enantiopure Supramolecular Motifs of Self-Assembled Diamine-Based Chiral Molecules on Cu(100)

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The assembly of two diphenylethylenediamine enantiomers, separately deposited on Cu(100), is investigated from the first stages of two-dimensional crystallization to the nucleation and growth of the second layer. By means of scanning tunneling microscopy, we show that the chirality of enantiomers is expressed at different levels of molecular organization. Below the monolayer completion, a disordered phase coexists with domains of a square lattice aligned with the principal crystallographic directions of the substrate. The intrinsic chirality of the molecules is only manifested through specific features contained within the corresponding unit cell. For increasing coverage, this arrangement is accompanied by a second square structure, which appears to be clockwise or counterclockwise rotated with respect to the Cu(100) directions depending on the enantiomer. The nucleation of molecular chains on top of the aligned square structure gives rise to a second layer exhibiting a stripelike configuration with remarkable left- or right-handed helicity that mirrors that of the particular enantiomer. The nearly flat configuration of the first-layer molecules is confirmed by angular-dependent X-ray absorption experiments and supported by molecular dynamics simulations.

  • X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy on Nano-Magnet Arrays and Thin Films : Magnetism and Structure
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The magnetic and structural properties of nano magnet arrays and ferromagnetic thin films are investigated. Circular x-rays are used and extensive use is made in this Thesis of the X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) technique. By means of the XMCD magneto-optic sum rules the values of the orbital and spin moments are determined. In the case of the nano magnet arrays studied, the XMCD technique is used in a spatially resolved mode using Photo Electron Emission Microscopy (PEEM) after circular light excitation. The Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) is studied in both the Co K- and L-edges. In situ Co L-edge X-ray XMCD spectroscopy measurements are presented, in combination with spectro-microscopy results, on Co/Pt and Co/Au based nano-dot arrays, of typical dot lateral size 250×100 nm2, on self organized Si0.5Ge0.5. The Co is only a few atomic layers thick. The dot arrays display a high degree of lateral order and the individual dots, in several cases, exhibit a stable magnetic moment at 300 K. It is found possible to characterize the spin reorientation of these dot arrays. For both systems the in- versus out-of-plane orbital moment anisotropy, is not always related with an out-of-plane magnetization and the occurrence of a spin reorientation. By performing Co K-edge EXAFS measurements the local atomic structure around the Co atoms is characterized. The feasibility of a high precision quantitative structural analysis of L-EXAFS is studied on the system Au/Co/Au/W(110). The spin reorientation transition is studied as a function of the Co thickness and Au cap thickness. The L-edge EXAFS indicates that this reorientation is correlated to a lattice expansion in the perpendicular direction. High precision angle dependent XMCD work is performed on a high temperature exchange bias system. Pinned or frozen magnetic moments are studied within an exchange biased NiFe ferromagnet at the NiFe/FeMn, ferromagnet/antiferromagnet interface by XMCD and complemented by x-ray resonant reflectivity experiments, at the Ni, Fe and Mn L-edges. The Mn L-edge XMCD MnSb and of (Ga, Mn)As layers modified by high temperature annealing is studied. For MnSb an enhanced value is obtained versus theoretical calculations. This result can be explained by means of the enhanced surface to volume ratio for the samples studied. For (Ga, Mn)As differences are found in the local environment of the Mn atoms upon annealing.

  • Growth of SiC by PVT method in the presence of cerium dopant
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crystal Growth. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-0248 .- 1873-5002. ; 377, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the presence of CeO2 in the source material on the properties of SiC crystals grown by Physical Vapor Transport (PVT) method is investigated. The doping efficiency and, indirectly, the presence of the cerium vapour in the growth atmosphere were examined by study of structural, electrical and optical properties of the crystals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that Ce2O3 and CeO2 coexist on the SiC post-growth surfaces. A detectable Ce incorporation is observed only in the last grown part of the crystal.

  • Homogeneous and heterogeneous magnetism in (Zn,Co)O : From a random antiferromagnet to a dipolar superferromagnet by changing the growth temperature
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 88:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of (Zn,Co)O layers with Co contents x up to 40% grown by atomic layer deposition have been investigated. All structures deposited at 160 degrees C show magnetic properties specific to II-VI dilute magnetic semiconductors with localized spins S = 3/2 coupled by strong but short-range antiferromagnetic interactions resulting in low-temperature spin-glass freezing for x = 0.16 and 0.4. At higher growth temperature (200 degrees C) metallic Co nanocrystals precipitate in two locations giving rise to two different magnetic responses: (i) a superparamagnetic contribution coming from volume disperse nanocrystals; (ii) a ferromagneticlike behavior brought about by nanocrystals residing at the (Zn,Co)O/substrate interface. It is shown that the dipolar coupling within the interfacial two-dimensional dense dispersion of nanocrystals is responsible for the ferromagneticlike behavior.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of Mn(+) implanted silicon crystals studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Radiation Physics and Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-806X .- 1879-0895. ; 80:10, s. 1119-1124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The implantation of Mn ions into two Si substrates with different doping (P or B), resistivity and oxygen content was performed at low and high substrate temperatures. Different post-implantation processing was carried out to study its influence on the structural and magnetic properties of these samples. The local order around the Mn atoms was characterized by X-ray absorption fine structure techniques and the magnetic properties of the Mn ionic cores were determined by means of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The results are discussed in relation to the structural and macroscopic magnetic properties. It is shown that the amorphous matrix speeds up the formation of MnSi(x) inclusions. However, the existence of inclusions or the type of electrically active dopants is not directly related to the magnetic properties. Therefore, in the performed studies, the importance of structural defects on the magnetic properties was confirmed. A localized magnetic moment carried by the Mn ionic cores could not be detected by means of dichroic measurements.
