  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to challange the notion of an unquestioned bodynormativity. It is proposed that the able and disabled body is a social and cultural construction, related to bodily variations and linked to an ability/disability order of power. The theme can be discussed in ways, which are similar to those, exploring gender by gender and feminist research. Based on a handful of bronze and silver figurines from Scandinavian Late Iron Age, showing a focus on ocular matters that are connected to variations in visual ability, it is stated that in this context vision and eye-sight was a theme open for negotiations within an ability/disability axis of power.

  • Affective interventions and ‘the hegemonic other’ in runestones from Västergötland and Södermanland, Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Current Swedish Archaeology. - 1102-7355 .- 2002-3901. ; 29:1, s. 155-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the eleventh century AD, the Scandinavian countries were in the final stage of the process of conversion to Christianity. Local and regional processes of negotiations towards a Christian hegemony took various courses in different parts of Scandinavia. There are few substantial indications that social tensions resulted in violence. Rather, archaeological evidence indicates a gradual change. This paper highlights how these processes of negotiations were expressed by counter-hegemonic groups that took advantage of the affective affordances of runestones. By raising specific runestones, these non-Christian groups were part of an agonistic political process, as described by the political philosopher Chantal Mouffe.

  • Ingår i: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives on Gender Transformations. From Private to Public. Spencer-Wood, Suzanne M. (Ed.). - New York : Springer. - 9781461448624 ; , s. 275-303
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this chapter is to discuss questions about materiality: how different material phenomena can be involved in an ethical, or more precisely, feminist process concerning public interventions in the material construction of the family, home and household and their related contexts during the last century. A background is Suzanne Spencer-Wood’s (1996: 407) definition of material feminism as a theoretical approach focussing on material culture not just as a product of behaviour but also as an active social agent used by feminists to symbolise and implement their transformations of culture by combining the supposedly separate domestic and public spheres in order to raise women’s status. Reform women gave new meanings to material culture that they used as social agents to change gender ideology, identities, roles and practice. The theoretical approach also relies on discussions concerning ethical practice and ethical materiality as it is highlighted by Stacy Alaimo and Susan Hekman (2008a, b) in their anthology Material Feminisms. Materiality is understood in this chapter as something physical in a broad sense, including domestic animals and the human body. Special attention will be paid to material phenomena as an active and significant factor with a historicity, a force and a value of its own, material agency.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Scandinavia. A Journal for Nordic Ethnology. - 0348-9698. ; 46, s. 154-160
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Folding time in Archaeology is a review of Elin Engström's PhD disseration, where she presents a historiography of the archaeological Eketorp Project. In the review some of her main points are discussed; the analytical starting point of Ludwig Fleck's ides that science is a product of thought styles and thought collectives, archaeology's connection to nationalism and masculinity, and feminism's and in particular Donna Haraway's ideas about a situated knowledge. The pros and cons of these analytical themes are discussed.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on a specific type of artefact, a little golden pendant, this article is an attempt to demonstrate how material objects can be used in interactions with various memorial practices. Applying four case studies, it is agued that material culture, such as these pendants, are active and full of meaning.Through various memorial techniques, like incorporation into old monuments, revitalizing ancient customs, inventing traditions and passing an object through a chain of generations, material cultur is provided with a number of possibilities for playing an active part in social dynamics. Memories - as well as oblivion - are thereby included as important social themes.

Genom att tillämpa filosofen Chantal Mouffes teorier om agonistiska politiska processer, diskuteras hur runstenarna med sin plats i det offentliga rummet gav den religiösa hegemonins "relationella andra" ett utrymme och blev synliggjord

  • Negotiating Normativities - 'Odin from Lejre' as challenger of hegemonic orders
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Danish Archaeology. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0108-464X. ; 2:1, s. 87-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on some bodily features of the figurine called ‘Odin from Lejre’. Some corporal characteristics convey an ambivalent touch to the interpretation of the miniature. So, for example, shows the clothing close resemblance to the late Iron Age female dress. This, combined with facial attributes that have been interpreted as a moustache, can be seen as a negotiation of the contemporary hetero-normative gender order. Moreover, the eyes of the figure demonstrate certain irregularities, maybe signifying differences in the visual capacities of the eyes. This corporal exceptionality in relation to (today’s) notions of body-normativity may imply that the Viking Age abled body sometimes was extended to include reduced visual capacity. The processing of both gender-normativity and body-normativity in one and the same precious item, may imply that the high-ranked setting of Lejre included performative practices that were negotiating both heteronormative and body-normative hegemonic orders.

  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Social Approaches to Viking Studies. - 1873448007 ; , s. 53-64
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article demonstrates how the Swedish view of the Nordic Viking Age woman developed within a specific social situation at the end of the nineteenth century. The dominant gender ideology affected the formation of this image, which became a long-lived stereotype. Recently, its content partly merged with another image derived from completely different social and gender ideological contexts. A lack of conciousness of the different historical situations, of which the ideas are a part, has resulted in a contamination of gender ideologies.

  • Viking Age Hair
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Internet Archaeology. - : Council for British Archaeology. - 1363-5387. ; 42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on images, figurines, and Medieval Icelandic texts, changes and continuities of Viking Age hair style is discussed. It can be demonstrated that women's hair style - with a few exceptions - was more traditional and conservative than men's. Men's beard styling and head hair show a wider range of corporal differentiation. For both women and men, hair and its articulations seem to have been an important feature, expressing social norms and roles, but also exceptional status. With its specific material character, hair was an indispensable and creative part in social dynamics.

  • Eketorps veckningar : Hur arkeologi formar tid, rum och kön
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines the history of the cultural heritage site of Eketorp, a prehistoric ring-fort, on the island of Öland, Sweden. The archaeological excavations at Eketorp, which began in 1964, lasted for a decade and soon turned into one of the largest archaeological research projects in Sweden. The scale and the implementation of the excavations, as an interdisciplinary and international research project, fostered a whole generation of archaeologists and resulted in numerous research publications. After the excavations the archaeological site was transformed into a full-scale archaeological reconstruction by the Swedish National Heritage Board. Since the mid-1980s the site has been a popular tourist attraction and open-air museum. The history of the site itself connects to several academic fields, including archaeology, history of archaeology, cultural heritage and museum studies. Through Ludwig Fleck’s concept thought collective and Donna Haraway’s situated knowledge, which are used as analytical tools, the aim of this thesis is to explore how these different fields interacted throughout the history of Eketorp. Further, the analytical tools are used to highlight how these interactions have generated notions of time, space, and gender. The study takes an interdisciplinary approach with the history of Eketorp analysed in three analytical chapters, each of them with different chronological and empirical focus. First, Eketorp is explored as a contemporary museum space through ethnographic fieldwork. Second, archive material is used to analyse how the archaeological excavation and the following archaeological reconstruction were conducted during the 1960s and onwards. Third, scientific texts are used to analyse how interpretations of Eketorp as a prehistoric site has changed. The concluding chapter integrates the results of the three chapters in order to critically examine how notions of time, space and gender interconnect between these fields. Illustrated by a wide chronological and interdisciplinary approach, the central argument of the thesis is thus that the Eketorp thought collective and thought style, intimately connected to hierarchies in academic practice, were created, performed, and maintained through several scientific and heritage institutions.
