  • Distributed Run-Time System, a Protocol for Ada
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Proc. Ada-Europe'93, LNCS 688. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. ; , s. 249-263
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The requirements and specification of a protocol for low level communication between the run-time systems in a distributed Ada environment is presented. This allows an Ada system to be separated into software resources and run-time controllers. Calls to the local run-time system of a node, concerning task management, are transformed into remote calls to the controller, that schedules all tasks in the application. The calls to the run-time system together with all messages, requests and replies, that are triggered as a consequence, are described. The controller will be implemented in hardware separate from the processors. Communication between processors and controllers are by means of high speed (Gigabit) networks. In the proposed system, partitioning and distribution of Ada programs can fully utilize the inherent and strong type checking in Ada.

  • Distribution of Tasks Within a Centrally Scheduled Local Area Network
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Proc. Ada-Europe'94, LNCS 887. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. ; , s. 421-432
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Distribution of a single Ada program on a local area network is accomplished by partitioning the run-time system into two parts. A central scheduling module is responsible for task management. Distributed run-time executives handle context switches and remote entry calls; however all activities are supervised by the scheduler. The scheduler can be implemented in hardware in order to achieve high efficiency. A network based on optical fibers is necessary due to the high speed required for system calls. Asynchronous Transfer Mode is suggested as the protocol for the communication. We describe an implementation of the divided run-time system on an Ethernet network, using MC68030-based micro computers as targets and an Ada program executing on a Rational host as the scheduler.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on ReConFigurable Computing and FPGAs (ReConFig 2011). - Los Alamitos, Calif : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769545516
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents GIMME (General Image Multiview Manipulation Engine), a highly flexible reconfigurable stand-alone mobile two-camera vision platform with stereo-vision capability. GIMME relies on reconfigurable hardware (FPGA) to perform application-specific low to medium-level image-processing at video rate. The Qseven-extension enables additional processing power. Thanks to its compact design, low power consumption and standardized interfaces (power and communication), GIMME is an ideal vision platform for autonomous and mobile robot applications.

  • The Black Pearl: An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Black Pearl is a custom made autonomous underwater vehicle developed at Mälardalen University, Sweden. It is built in a modular fashion, including its mechanics, electronics and software. After a successful participation at the RoboSub competition in 2012 and winning the prize for best craftsmanship, this year we made minor improvements to the hardware, while the focus of the robot's evolution shifted to the software part. In this paper we give an overview of how the Black Pearl is built, both from the hardware and software point of view.

  • Human Robot Interaction Solutions for Intuitive Industrial Robot Programming
  • 2012
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the past few decades the use of industrial robots has increased the efficiency as well as competitiveness of many companies. Despite this fact, in many cases, robot automation investments are considered to be technically challenging. In addition, for most small and medium sized enterprises (SME) this process is associated with high costs. Due to their continuously changing product lines, reprogramming costs are likely to exceed installation costs by a large margin. Furthermore, traditional programming methods for industrial robots are too complex for an inexperienced robot programmer, thus assistance from a robot programming expert is often needed.  We hypothesize that in order to make industrial robots more common within the SME sector, the robots should be reprogrammable by technicians or manufacturing engineers rather than robot programming experts. In this thesis we propose a high-level natural language framework for interacting with industrial robots through an instructional programming environment for the user.  The ultimate goal of this thesis is to bring robot programming to a stage where it is as easy as working together with a colleague. In this thesis we mainly address two issues. The first issue is to make interaction with a robot easier and more natural through a multimodal framework. The proposed language architecture makes it possible to manipulate, pick or place objects in a scene through high level commands. Interaction with simple voice commands and gestures enables the manufacturing engineer to focus on the task itself, rather than programming issues of the robot. This approach shifts the focus of industrial robot programming from the coordinate based programming paradigm, which currently dominates the field, to an object based programming scheme. The second issue addressed is a general framework for implementing multimodal interfaces. There have been numerous efforts to implement multimodal interfaces for computers and robots, but there is no general standard framework for developing them. The general framework proposed in this thesis is designed to perform natural language understanding, multimodal integration and semantic analysis with an incremental pipeline and includes a novel multimodal grammar language, which is used for multimodal presentation and semantic meaning generation.

  • Intuitive Industrial Robot Programming Through Incremental Multimodal Language and Augmented Reality
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 IEEE International Conferance on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2011). - : IEEE. - 9781612843865 ; , s. 3934-3939
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing easy to use, intuitive interfaces is crucial to introduce robotic automation to many small medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Due to their continuously changing product lines, reprogramming costs exceed installation costs by a large margin. In addition, traditional programming methods for industrial robots is too complex for an inexperienced robot programmer, thus external assistance is often needed. In this paper a new incremental multimodal language, which uses augmented reality (AR) environment, is presented. The proposed language architecture makes it possible to manipulate, pick or place the objects in the scene. This approach shifts the focus of industrial robot programming from coordinate based programming paradigm, to object based programming scheme. This makes it possible for non-experts to program the robot in an intuitive way, without going through rigorous training in robot programming.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 14th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, 2009. (ETFA 2009). - Mallorca, Spain. - 9781424427284
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a new simplified natural language that makes use of spatial relations between the objects in scene to navigate an industrial robot for simple pick and place applications. Developing easy to use, intuitive interfaces is crucial to introduce robotic automation to many small medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Due to their continuously changing product lines, reprogramming costs are far higher than installation costs. In order to hide the complexities of robot programming we propose a natural language where the use can control and jog the robot based on reference objects in the scene. We used Gaussian kernels to represent spatial regions, such as left or above. Finally we present some dialogues between the user and robot to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system.

  • Scheduling POP-Star for Automatic Creation of Robot Cell Programs
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typical pick and place, and machine tending applications often require an industrial robot to be embedded in a cell and to communicate with other devices in the cell. Programming the program logic is a tedious job, requiring expert programming knowledge, and it can take more time than programming the specific robot movements itself. We propose a new system, which takes in the description of the whole manufacturing process in natural language as input, fills in the implicit actions, and plans the sequence of actions to accomplish the task described in minimal makespan using a modified partial planning algorithm. Finally we demonstrate that the proposed system can come up with a sensible plan for the given instructions.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th international conference on multimodal interfaces. - New York : ACM Press. - 9781450306416 ; , s. 225-228

    • Humans employ different information channels (modalities) such as speech, pictures and gestures in their commu- nication. It is believed that some of these modalities are more error-prone to some specific type of data and therefore multimodality can help to reduce ambiguities in the interaction. There have been numerous efforts in implementing multimodal interfaces for computers and robots. Yet, there is no general standard framework for developing them. In this paper we propose a general framework for implementing multimodal interfaces. It is designed to perform natural language understanding, multi- modal integration and semantic analysis with an incremental pipeline and includes a multimodal grammar language, which is used for multimodal presentation and semantic meaning generation.

  • In vitro degradation and in vivo biocompatibility study of a new linear poly(urethane urea)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of biomedical materials research. Part B: Applied biomaterials. - : Wiley. - 1552-4973 .- 1552-4981. ; 86B:1, s. 45-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Segmented poly(urethane urea)s (PUUs) with hard segments derived only from methyl 2,6-diisocyantohexanoate (LDI) without the use of a chain extender have previously been described. These materials, which contain hard segments with multiple urea linkages, show exceptionally high strain capability (1600-4700%). In the study reported here, the rate and effect of hydrolysis of these materials were determined for gamma-sterilized and nonsterilized samples. Materials investigated contained PCL, PTMC, P(TMC-co-CL), P(CL-co-DLLA), or P(TMC-co-DLLA) as soft segments and, as well as their mechanical properties, changes in mass, inherent viscosity (IN.), and thermal properties were studied over 20 weeks. Results showed that the degradation rate was dependant on the soft segment structure, with a higher rate of degradation for the polyester-dominating PUUs exhibiting a substantial loss in IN. A tendency of reduction of tensile strength and strain hardening was seen for all samples. Also, loss in elongation at break was detected, for PUU-P(CL-DLLA) it went from 1600% to 830% in 10 weeks. Gamma radiation caused an initial loss in I.V. and induced more rapid hydrolysis compared with nonsterilized samples, except for PUU-PTMC. A cytotoxicity test using human fibroblasts demonstrated that the material supports cell viability. In addition, an in vivo biocompatibility study showed a typical foreign body reaction after I and 6 weeks.

  • Ingår i: European Journal of Engineering Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0304-3797 .- 1469-5898. ; 45:3, s. 443-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational collaboration activities are generally under-researched part of the interactive learning between universities and industry. The study based on 529 Master of Science (MSc) theses from a major Swedish engineering school, the faculty of engineering LTH at Lund University, shows that MSc theses are a frequently used collaboration mechanism between university and industry in engineering education. Collaborating firms benefit mainly by recruiting students and the transfer of technological knowledge. Moreover, mainly regional large firms benefit from the educational collaboration and firms collaborate mostly on knowledge related to product innovations and in the early stages of the product innovation process. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) tend to relate to newer engineering disciplines, have relatively more MSc thesis projects related to product innovations and later process stages, specifically in prototype development and testing, than large firms have. The paper suggests a number of university actions to increase knowledge spillover to SMEs.

    • The Ravenscar profile for high integrity systems using Ada 95 is well defined in all real-time aspects. The complexity of the run-time system has been reduced to allow full utilization of formal methods for applications using the Ravenscar profile. In the Mana project a tool set is being developed including a formal model of a Ravenscar compliant run-time system, a gnat compatible run-time system, and an ASIS based tool to allow for the verification of a system including both COTS and code that is reused.

    • The paper contributes with three methods that together will make a complete tool-set for verification of mission critical applications. The first method is the transformation of existing Ada or VHDL code into an intermediate form. This form is used for verification by numerous different model checkers. The second method is a predictable runtime kernel that has both a verifiable formal model and is implemented in hardware to achieve full predictability. Finally, a method for transforming the intermediate form of the complete system into a hardware unit, the SafetyChip that performs runtime control of the system. This SafetyChip can catch 'out-of-state' behaviors.

  • Extended analysis of the effect of learning with feedback on the detectability of pulmonary nodules in chest tomosynthesis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Progress in Biomedical Optics and Imaging - Proceedings of SPIE. - : SPIE. - 1605-7422. ; 7966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In chest tomosynthesis, low-dose projections collected over a limited angular range are used for reconstruction of section images of the chest, resulting in a reduction of disturbing anatomy at a moderate increase in radiation dose compared to chest radiography. In a previous study, we investigated the effects of learning with feedback on the detection of pulmonary nodules in chest tomosynthesis. Six observers with varying degrees of experience of chest tomosynthesis analyzed tomosynthesis cases for presence of pulmonary nodules. The cases were analyzed before and after learning with feedback. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) was used as reference. The differences in performance between the two readings were calculated using the jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristics (JAFROC-2) as primary measure of detectability. Significant differences between the readings were found only for observers inexperienced in chest tomosynthesis. The purpose of the present study was to extend the statistical analysis of the results of the previous study, including JAFROC-1 analysis and FROC curves in the analysis. The results are consistent with the results of the previous study and, furthermore, JAFROC-1 gave lower p-values than JAFROC-2 for the observers who improved their performance after learning with feedback. © 2011 SPIE.

  • Ingår i: Acta radiologica. - : SAGE Publications. - 1600-0455 .- 0284-1851. ; 52:5, s. 503-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background In chest tomosynthesis, low-dose projections collected over a limited angular range are used for reconstruction of an arbitrary number of section images of the chest, resulting in a moderately increased radiation dose compared to chest radiography. Purpose To investigate the effects of learning with feedback on the detection of pulmonary nodules for observers with varying experience of chest tomosynthesis, to identify pitfalls regarding detection of pulmonary nodules, and present suggestions for how to avoid them, and to adapt the European quality criteria for chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) to chest tomosynthesis. Material and Methods Six observers analyzed tomosynthesis cases for presence of nodules in a jackknife alternative free-response receiver-operating characteristics (JAFROC) study. CT was used as reference. The same tomosynthesis cases were analyzed before and after learning with feedback, which included a collective learning session. The difference in performance between the two readings was calculated using the JAFROC figure of merit as principal measure of detectability. Results Significant improvement in performance after learning with feedback was found only for observers inexperienced in tomosynthesis. At the collective learning session, localization of pleural and subpleural nodules or structures was identified as the main difficulty in analyzing tomosynthesis images. Conclusion The results indicate that inexperienced observers can reach a high level of performance regarding nodule detection in tomosynthesis after learning with feedback and that the main problem with chest tomosynthesis is related to the limited depth resolution.

  • Age, hypertension, and lacunar stroke are the major determinants of the severity of age-related white matter changes
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASES. - : S. Karger AG. - 1015-9770 .- 1421-9786. ; 21:5-6, s. 315-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • <i>Background:</i> Age-related white matter changes (ARWMC), seen on neuroimaging with high frequency in older people, are thought to be consequent to the effect of vascular risk factors and vascular diseases including hypertension and stroke. Among the proofs conventionally required for a factor to be considered a risk factor for a definite pathology, there is the demonstration of a trend in risk exposure related to disease severity. We sought whether such a trend existed in the association of vascular risk factors or comorbidities with the severity of ARWMC aiming particularly at further elucidating the relative roles of hypertension and stroke in this regard. <i>Methods:</i> The LADIS (Leukoaraiosis and Disability) Study is evaluating the role of ARWMC as an independent determinant of the transition to disability in the elderly. Six hundred and thirty-nine nondisabled subjects (mean age 74.1 ± 5.0, M/F: 288/351) with ARWMC of different severity grades on MRI (mild, moderate, or severe according to the Fazekas scale) were assessed at baseline for demographics, vascular risk factors, and comorbidities, and are being followed up for 3 years. <i>Results:</i> Age, frequency of hypertension and history of stroke increased along with increasing ARWMC severity independently of other factors. For hypertension, however, this occurred only in subjects without a stroke history, while for stroke history, it mainly depended on lacunar stroke. The amount of cigarettes smoked and the interaction between hypercholesterolemia and smoking predicted only the most severe ARWMC grade. <i>Conclusions:</i> The LADIS Study confirms that age, hypertension and lacunar strokes are the major determinants of ARWMC. Smoking and hypercholesterolemia provide additional risk.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Case Method Research & Application. - 1554-7752. ; 10:4, s. 387-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to present the process and evaluation of case writing projects in co-operation with companies and organizations in a course for engineering students. The case writing projects could provide an illustration and example framework for working with companies in constructing cases. Normally cases are constructed for teaching purposes in higher education. However, in order to get closer co-operation and more interest from the companies the authors encouraged the students and the companies to construct cases on issues that the companies felt were especially relevant for them. Drawing on previous research on case writing in teaching case writing projects were set up. The companies who worked closely with the students were very satisfied with both the case writing process and the final cases. These companies expressed several benefits like getting a good public reputation, getting an analysis by a third party, a free look on possible future employees, maintaining good relations with higher education and also getting material for internal development purposes. The companies that had a more distant relationship to the projects or were the process had been problematic had a more critical view of the process and outcome. They saw few benefits with the case writing projects besides maintaining a good image.

    • This paper presents results and conclusions from design, manufacturing, and benchmarking of a heterogeneous computing low power fault tolerant computer, realized on an industrial Qseven® small form factor (SFF) platform. A heterogeneous computer in this context features multi-core processors (CPU), a graphical processing unit (GPU), and a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The x86 compatible CPU enables the use of vast amounts of commonly available software and operating systems, which can be used for space and harsh environments. The developed heterogeneous computer shares the same core architecture as game consoles such as Microsoft Xbox One and Sony Playstation 4 and has an aggregated computational performance in the TFLOP range. The processing power can be used for on-board intelligent data processing and higher degrees of autonomy in general. The module feature quad core 1.5 GHz 64 bit CPU (24 GFLOPs), 160 GPU shader cores (127 GFLOPs), and a 12 Mgate equivalent FPGA fabric with a safety critical ARM® Cortex-M3 MCU.

    • In the disturbed Baltic Sea ecosystem, several animal species display failing health related to exposure to toxic compounds, reduced energy metabolism and immune system disorders. In order to investigate possible associations between fish health and exposure to chemicals affecting the energy metabolism and immune defence, the levels of algal toxins (bromophenols, hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers and nodularin), perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) and thiamine (vitamin B1) were determined in European flounder (Platichthys flesus). Several biomarkers indicating health status were examined in the fish, including ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), and activities of glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and catalase, in addition to a large set of blood variables. The fish were collected from Hanobukten in the south-western parts of the Baltic Sea in late August 2018. Regression analyses of algal toxins, PFAS and thiamine concentration displayed several significant associations with biomarkers associated with detoxification and liver function, immune system function and blood status of the fish. • Full Scale Industrial Project Work
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: IEEE Frontiers in Education conference. ; , s. 11b2-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the motivations, design, outcomes, and lessons learned, from a long series of project-oriented courses. The project is chosen to be similar to real industry projects and with a technical content that is at the senior or master level. The students will in the course follow the project from the initial requirement specification to a product during one semester. The first half of the semester also includes a traditional Distributed Systems course, but the second half is solely devoted to the project. The time each student is supposed to spend on actual project work is 15 effort weeks which, since the project involves between 15 and 20 students, means that up to 7 effort years are spent on the project by final year computer science students.

  • Multi-Level Project Work; a Study in Collaboration

    • This is a description of our latest effort to find new education forms. We have a long experience with running large projects [1], but wanted to expand the concept into an interdisciplinary setting. By combing three different student groups we have been able to formulate a project aiming at from scratch building robots that will participate in the robot soccer championships. This complex project resembles a realistic industry development that covers the, for us, usual computer science aspect, as well as interfacing with electronic hardware and mechanical construction.

  • RUNESTONE, an International Student Collaboration Project
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: IEEE Frontiers in Education conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our students will eventually work in a global market; what better preparation can we provide for international collaboration than … international collaboration? The RUNESTONE project is developing and evaluating the notion of incorporating international group projects into the undergraduate Computer Science curriculum. RUNESTONE adds new dimensions to student teamwork, requiring students to handle collaboration that is remote, cross-cultural, and linguistically challenging. RUNESTONE is a three year project, with the prototype version running in winter 1998 with students at Uppsala University, Sweden, and Grand Valley State University, Michigan, USA. The 1998 pilot study will be followed by a full-scale implementation in 1999 and another in 2000.

  • Effects of algal extracts (Polysiphonia fucoides) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): A biomarker approach
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Marine Environmental Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-1136. ; 62:Supplement 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genotoxicity of algal extracts (Polysiphonia fucoides) was investigated in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Trout were exposed to 0.5% of the algal extract for 7 days. Comet assay (alkaline and neutral versions) and Micronucleus test were used to assess DNA damage, and Diffusion Assay to detect apoptotic cells. EROD activities and oxidative stress parameters in rainbow trout liver were also measured. A significant induction of DNA single strand breaks comparable to the ones induced by the in vivo exposure to 20 mg/kg B[a]P was observed at the end of the treatment, while increases of double strand breaks and apoptotic cells were not observed. The absence of activation of antioxidant responses seems to underline a mechanism of action of the genotoxic algal extract which does not involve oxidative stress.
