  • Surgical site infection after gastrointestinal surgery in children: an international, multicentre, prospective cohort study

    • Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, there is a lack of data available about SSI in children worldwide, especially from low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SSI in children and associations between SSI and morbidity across human development settings.MethodsA multicentre, international, prospective, validated cohort study of children aged under 16 years undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty gastrointestinal surgery. Any hospital in the world providing paediatric surgery was eligible to contribute data between January and July 2016. The primary outcome was the incidence of SSI by 30 days. Relationships between explanatory variables and SSI were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Countries were stratified into high development, middle development and low development groups using the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).ResultsOf 1159 children across 181 hospitals in 51 countries, 523 (45·1%) children were from high HDI, 397 (34·2%) from middle HDI and 239 (20·6%) from low HDI countries. The 30-day SSI rate was 6.3% (33/523) in high HDI, 12·8% (51/397) in middle HDI and 24·7% (59/239) in low HDI countries. SSI was associated with higher incidence of 30-day mortality, intervention, organ-space infection and other HAIs, with the highest rates seen in low HDI countries. Median length of stay in patients who had an SSI was longer (7.0 days), compared with 3.0 days in patients who did not have an SSI. Use of laparoscopy was associated with significantly lower SSI rates, even after accounting for HDI.ConclusionThe odds of SSI in children is nearly four times greater in low HDI compared with high HDI countries. Policies to reduce SSI should be prioritised as part of the wider global agenda.

    • Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA.

  • Acceleration of petaelectronvolt protons in the Galactic Centre

    • Galactic cosmic rays reach energies of at least a few petaelectronvolts(1) (of the order of 1015 electronvolts). This implies that our Galaxy contains petaelectronvolt accelerators ('PeVatrons'), but all proposed models of Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators encounter difficulties at exactly these energies(2). Dozens of Galactic accelerators capable of accelerating particles to energies of tens of teraelectronvolts (of the order of 10(13) electronvolts) were inferred from recent gamma-ray observations(3). However, none of the currently known accelerators-not even the handful of shell-type supernova remnants commonly believed to supply most Galactic cosmic rays-has shown the characteristic tracers of petaelectronvolt particles, namely, power-law spectra of.-rays extending without a cut-off or a spectral break to tens of teraelectronvolts(4). Here we report deep.-ray observations with arcminute angular resolution of the region surrounding the Galactic Centre, which show the expected tracer of the presence of petaelectronvolt protons within the central 10 parsecs of the Galaxy. We propose that the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* is linked to this PeVatron. Sagittarius A* went through active phases in the past, as demonstrated by X-ray outbursts(5) and an outflow from the Galactic Centre(6). Although its current rate of particle acceleration is not sufficient to provide a substantial contribution to Galactic cosmic rays, Sagittarius A* could have plausibly been more active over the last 10(6)-10(7) years, and therefore should be considered as a viable alternative to supernova remnants as a source of petaelectronvolt Galactic cosmic rays.

  • Constraints on the emission region of 3C 279 during strong flares in 2014 and 2015 through VHE gamma-ray observations with HESS

    • The flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 is known to exhibit pronounced variability in the high-energy (100MeV < E < 100 GeV) gamma-ray band, which is continuously monitored with Fermi-LAT. During two periods of high activity in April 2014 and June 2015 target-of-opportunity observations were undertaken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray domain. While the observation in 2014 provides an upper limit, the observation in 2015 results in a signal with 8 : 7 sigma significance above an energy threshold of 66 GeV. No VHE variability was detected during the 2015 observations. The VHE photon spectrum is soft and described by a power-law index of 4.2 +/- 0.3. The H.E.S.S. data along with a detailed and contemporaneous multiwavelength data set provide constraints on the physical parameters of the emission region. The minimum distance of the emission region from the central black hole was estimated using two plausible geometries of the broad-line region and three potential intrinsic spectra. The emission region is confidently placed at r greater than or similar to 1 : 7 X 1017 cm from the black hole, that is beyond the assumed distance of the broad-line region. Time-dependent leptonic and lepto-hadronic one-zone models were used to describe the evolution of the 2015 flare. Neither model can fully reproduce the observations, despite testing various parameter sets. Furthermore, the H.E.S.S. data were used to derive constraints on Lorentz invariance violation given the large redshift of 3C 279.

  • Probing the Magnetic Field in the GW170817 Outflow Using HESS Observations

    • The detection of the first electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star (BNS) merger remnant GW170817 established the connection between short gamma-ray bursts and BNS mergers. It also confirmed the forging of heavy elements in the ejecta (a so-called kilonova) via the r-process nucleosynthesis. The appearance of nonthermal radio and X-ray emission, as well as the brightening, which lasted more than 100 days, were somewhat unexpected. Current theoretical models attempt to explain this temporal behavior as either originating from a relativistic off-axis jet or a kilonova-like outflow. In either scenario, there is some ambiguity regarding how much energy is transported in the nonthermal electrons versus the magnetic field of the emission region. Combining the Very Large Array (radio) and Chandra (X-ray) measurements with observations in the GeV-TeV domain can help break this ambiguity, almost independently of the assumed origin of the emission. Here we report for the first time on deep H.E.S.S. observations of GW170817/GRB 170817A between 124 and 272 days after the BNS merger with the full H.E.S.S. array of telescopes, as well as on an updated analysis of the prompt (<5 days) observations with the upgraded H.E.S.S. phase-I telescopes. We discuss implications of the H.E.S.S. measurement for the magnetic field in the context of different source scenarios.

    • The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V.

  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data

    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Determinants of morbidity and mortality following emergency abdominal surgery in children in low-income and middle-income countries

    • Background: Child health is a key priority on the global health agenda, yet the provision of essential and emergency surgery in children is patchy in resource-poor regions. This study was aimed to determine the mortality risk for emergency abdominal paediatric surgery in low-income countries globally.Methods: Multicentre, international, prospective, cohort study. Self-selected surgical units performing emergency abdominal surgery submitted prespecified data for consecutive children aged <16 years during a 2-week period between July and December 2014. The United Nation's Human Development Index (HDI) was used to stratify countries. The main outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality, analysed by multilevel logistic regression.Results: This study included 1409 patients from 253 centres in 43 countries; 282 children were under 2 years of age. Among them, 265 (18.8%) were from low-HDI, 450 (31.9%) from middle-HDI and 694 (49.3%) from high-HDI countries. The most common operations performed were appendectomy, small bowel resection, pyloromyotomy and correction of intussusception. After adjustment for patient and hospital risk factors, child mortality at 30 days was significantly higher in low-HDI (adjusted OR 7.14 (95% CI 2.52 to 20.23), p<0.001) and middle-HDI (4.42 (1.44 to 13.56), p=0.009) countries compared with high-HDI countries, translating to 40 excess deaths per 1000 procedures performed.Conclusions: Adjusted mortality in children following emergency abdominal surgery may be as high as 7 times greater in low-HDI and middle-HDI countries compared with high-HDI countries. Effective provision of emergency essential surgery should be a key priority for global child health agendas.

Foreign gene expression is an efficient mechanism for getting protein vaccines against different human viral and nonviral diseases. Plants make it easy to deal with safe, inexpensive, and provide trouble-free storage. The broad spectrum of safe gene promoters is being used to avoid risk assessments. Engineered virus-based vectors have no side effect. The process can be manipulated as follows: (a) retrieve and select gene encoding, use an antigenic protein from GenBank and/or from a viral-genome sequence, (b) design and construct hybrid-virus vectors (viral vector with a gene of interest) eventually flanked by plant-specific genetic regulatory elements for constitutive expression for obtaining chimeric virus, (c) gene transformation and/or transfection, for transient expression, into a plant host model, that is, tobacco, to get protocols processed positively, and then moving into edible host plants, (d) confirmation of protein expression by bioassay, PCR-associated tests (RT-PCR), Northern and Western blotting analysis, and serological assay (ELISA), (e) expression for adjuvant recombinant protein seeking better antigenicity, (f) extraction and purification of expressed protein for identification and dosing, (g) antigenicity capability evaluated using parental or oral delivery in animal models (mice and/or rabbit immunization), and (h) growing of construct-treated edible crops in protective green houses. Some successful cases of heterologous gene-expressed protein, as edible vaccine, are being discussed, that is, hepatitis C virus (HCV). R9 mimotope, also named hypervariable region 1 (HVR1), was derived from the HVR1 of HCV. It was used as a potential neutralizing epitope of HCV. The mimotope was expressed using cucumber mosaic virus coat protein (CP), alfalfa mosaic virus CP P3/RNA3, and tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) CP tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV) CP as expression vectors into tobacco plants. Expressed recombinant protein has not only been confirmed as a therapeutic but also as a diagnostic tool. Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), HSV-2 gD, and HSV-2 VP16 subunits were transfected into tobacco plants, using TMV CP TMGMV CP expression vectors.

    • Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) is involved in the modulation of cell growth, differentiation and repair following injury of various organs. Previous studies on human autopsy material have indicated that TGF-beta isoforms-beta1, -beta2 and -beta3, and TGF-beta receptor type I are expressed in various cells of necrotizing brain lesions like infarction and abscess. The present immunohistochemical study was designed to investigate changes that may occur with regard to TGF-beta and its receptors type I and II in a rat model of focal brain ischemia induced by transient or permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Our findings indicate that at days 1 and 3 following such transient and permanent ischemia there is an up-regulation of TGF-beta isoforms -beta1, -beta2 and -beta3, and TGF-beta receptor types I and II mainly in the perifocal neurons, reactive astroglial cells, endothelial cells and macrophages.

    • Analyzing the δ2H values in individual amino acids of proteins extracted from vertebrates, we unexpectedly found insome samples, notably bone collagen from seals, more than twice as much deuterium in proline and hydroxyproline residues than inseawater. This corresponds to at least 4 times higher δ2H than in any previously reported biogenic sample. We ruled out diet as aplausible mechanism for such anomalous enrichment. This finding puts into question the old adage that “you are what you eat”.

    • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a known endothelial mitogen and a potent enhancer of vascular permeability although its role in focal cerebral ischemia is still not completely understood. The present report describes the immunohistochemical distribution of VEGF and its 2 receptors, Flt-1 and Flk-1 at day 1 and 3 following permanent and transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in the rat. A bilateral increase in VEGF immunoreactivity, particularly in neurons and blood vessels, was seen in both the experimental designs by day 1. By day 3, the immunoreactivity was restricted chiefly to the lesion side, where reaction was most prominent in the border zones of the infarcts. Immunoreaction to VEGF was more pronounced in cases of permanent MCAO than in transient MCAO. Flt-1 reaction was increased in neurons, glial and endothelial cells after both transient and permanent MCAO. Immunoreactivity to Flk-1 was prominent in glial cells and was present to some extent in endothelial cells. These findings indicate an early upregulation of VEGF and its receptors after permanent as well as transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat.

    • ObjectiveIn 2015, the Academy for Eating Disorders collaborated with international patient, advocacy, and parent organizations to craft the Nine Truths About Eating Disorders'. This document has been translated into over 30 languages and has been distributed globally to replace outdated and erroneous stereotypes about eating disorders with factual information. In this paper, we review the state of the science supporting the Nine Truths'. MethodsThe literature supporting each of the Nine Truths' was reviewed, summarized and richly annotated. ResultsMost of the Nine Truths' arise from well-established foundations in the scientific literature. Additional evidence is required to further substantiate some of the assertions in the document. Future investigations are needed in all areas to deepen our understanding of eating disorders, their causes and their treatments. ConclusionsThe Nine Truths About Eating Disorders' is a guiding document to accelerate global dissemination of accurate and evidence-informed information about eating disorders.     • It is known that transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) is involved in the modulation of cell growth, differentiation, and repair following injury. We performed an immunohistochemical study of human brain autopsy and biopsy material for the expression of TGF-beta isoforms beta 1, beta 2 and beta 3, and TGF-beta receptor (T beta R) type I in different cells of necrotizing lesions such as infarction and abscess, and compared them with controls. Various cell types, both inside and in the proximity of lesions, showed immunoreactivity indicating the presence of all three isoforms. Significant values of immunoreaction for various TGF-beta s and T beta R-I were observed in cells such as astrocytes, macrophages, neurons, microvascular endothelial cells, and granulocytes. In the control cases, comprising biopsy material without necrotizing lesions, a prominent TGF-beta 2 immunoreactivity was observed in glial cells and neurons. TGF-beta 1 and TGF-beta 3 reactivity in controls, when compared with TGF-beta 2, was less. T beta R-I antiserum showed clear and distinct signals in the same type of cells as for TGF-beta s in the necrotizing lesions with varying values of significance. Our findings suggest that TGF-beta s and their receptor type I are involved in reactive processes around necrotizing human brain lesions like glial and macrophage responses, angiogenesis, and deposition of extracellular matrix.

    • The sound field in train compartments, treated as a series of connected air cavities, is modelled using statistical energy analysis, SEA. For the case under study, with five cavities in series and the source in the second cavity, a closed-form solution is obtained. An adjusted SEA model is used to predict the rate of spatial decay within a cavity. The SEA model is validated using results from a ray tracing method and from scale model measurements. For the octave bands 500-4000 Hz, good agreement is shown between the results from measurements, the ray tracing and the SEA model, for the two saloons closest to the source cavity (a vestibule). The SEA model was shown to slightly underestimate the rate of spatial decay within a cavity. It is concluded that a reasonable cause is the additional diffusion due to the seating.

  • Imagery Rescripting for Reducing Body Image Dissatisfaction : A Randomized Controlled Trial

    • Background Brief, innovative, mechanistically-driven psychological treatments for body dissatisfaction are needed. We aimed to explore the occurrence of body-related mental images among females reporting a subjective sense of body dissatisfaction (study 1), and to investigate the potential efficacy of a single session of imagery rescripting (ImRS) to reduce body dissatisfaction (Study 2: pilot; Study 3 randomized controlled trial). Methods and Results In study 1 (n = 31), participants reported occurrence of both positive and negative body-related mental imagery. Frequency of body-related mental imagery and negative valence of such images were significantly related to body dissatisfaction. The pilot trial (n = 63) indicated feasibility, whereby ImRS of a distressing body-related mental image significantly reduced the believability, vividness, negative affect and distress of the image within-session and one-week post-session versus an active placebo condition (Expressive writing about body related thoughts and emotions). However, ImRS did not result in significant changes in body dissatisfaction. Study 3 was a randomized controlled trial (n = 113) with 3 conditions-ImRS, Expressive writing, and wait-list control. ImRS resulted in a significant reduction of vividness, controllability and negative affect caused by the image compared to Expressive writing condition, after the intervention. However, there were no significant reductions in body dissatisfaction from baseline to 1-week assessment, nor in post-hoc analyses at the 1-month follow-up. Findings suggest that a single session of imagery rescripting seems to alleviate the negative properties of the image (i.e., has proximal effects as hypothesized in our mechanistic account), but does not bring about a significant change in body dissatisfaction (i.e., transfer downstream to more distal effects). Conclusions Given some promising effects of ImRS on negative body-related emotions, but lack of a downstream effect on body dissatisfaction itself, further investigation of the format, dose and focus of ImRS in this context is warranted.

    • The ability of suitably derived prop-2-enoates from 3-(thiophen-2-yl)- and 3-(thiophen-3-yl)-prop-2-enoic acid and appropriately fluorinated and non-fluorinated 4-[(4-alkoxyphenyl)diazenyl]phenols to promote excellent photoalignment of a bulk commercial nematic liquid crystal is reported. The performed study showed that the photoalignment of the liquid crystal is influenced by the number and disposition of fluoro-substituents and the position of attachment of the terminal thiophene moiety, either 2- or 3-substituted, in the molecular structure of the alignment material. Inclusion of a lateral fluoro-substituent(s) induces an excellent photoalignment whereas the non-fluorinated counterpart tends to give an unsatisfactory alignment. 3-Substituted thiophenes give a better photoalignment than their 2-substituted isomeric counterparts. A prototype display, which contains an alignment layer made from one of the proposed materials, possessing good alignment ability, is presented in order to demonstrate the application potential of these materials in LCDs.

    • Background: The number of refugees is the highest ever worldwide. Many have experienced trauma in home countries or on their escape which has mental health sequelae. Intrusive memories comprise distressing scenes of trauma which spring to mind unbidden. Development of novel scalable psychological interventions is needed urgently. Aims: We propose that brief cognitive science-driven interventions should be developed which pinpoint a focal symptom alongside a means to monitor it using behavioural techniques. The aim of the current study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the methodology required to develop such an intervention. Method: In this study we recruited 22 refugees (16-25 years), predominantly from Syria and residing in Sweden. Participants were asked to monitor the frequency of intrusive memories of trauma using a daily diary; rate intrusions and concentration; and complete a 1-session behavioural intervention involving Tetris game-play via smartphone. Results: Frequency of intrusive memories was high, and associated with high levels of distress and impaired concentration. Levels of engagement with study procedures were highly promising. Conclusions: The current work opens the way for developing novel cognitive behavioural approaches for traumatized refugees that are mechanistically derived, freely available and internationally scalable.

    • The scattering by a transversely isotropic sphere in a three-dimensional, homoge-neous, isotropic and infinite elastic medium is considered. The problem is a scalar one andis phrased as a scattering problem for an incident SH elastic waves propagating in the direc-tion parallel to the axis of material symmetry. The elastodynamic equations inside the sphereare transformed to spherical coordinates and the displacement field is expanded in associatedLegendre functions in the polar coordinate and powers in the radial coordinate. This leadsto recursion relations for the expansion coefficients inside the sphere. Using the boundaryconditions on the surface of the sphere results in a system of equations for all the expansioncoefficients for the fields outside and inside the sphere. As a result, the transition (T) matrixelements are calculated and given explicitly for low frequencies.

    • Scattering of elastic waves in materials with inhomogeneities is a classical problem in physics and geophysics, and have applications in non-destructive testing, material characterization, medical ultrasound, etc. The classical analytical solution of the scattering by a single isotropic spherical obstacle provides a good approximation and a basis for more complicated problems and gives a deep understanding of the scattering phenomenon [1]. However, plenty of natural and synthetic materials, specifically the grains in a metal, are known to be anisotropic. Recently, the scattering of elastic waves by a circle with cubic anisotropy is studied in 2D by Bostrom [2, 3], and Jafarzadeh et al. [4] use the same method to study the 3D scattering problem for a transversely isotropic sphere. The present work is a continuation of these studies and investigates the 3D scattering by a sphere with cubic anisotropy. Consider the scattering of a single spherical obstacle with cubic anisotropy contained in a three-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic and infinite elastic medium. In the isotropic surrounding the classical approach is used with the displacement field constructed as a superposition of incident and scattered waves, which are expanded in spherical vector wave functions. Inside the sphere the stress-strain relations are given in Cartesian coordinates for the cubic material and these are first transformed to spherical coordinates. These relations then become inhomogeneous in that they contain factors with trigonometric functions in both angular coordinates and the same becomes true also for the equations of motion. To proceed it is useful to expand the displacement into a series of vector spherical harmonics where each coefficient in turn is expanded into a power series in the radial coordinate. It follows from the equation of motion that the coefficients in the power series obey certain recursion relations, thus reducing the number of unknowns inside the sphere. Expressing also the stresses as a series in the vector spherical harmonics, the rest of the unknowns are determined by the continuity of the displacement and traction on the sphere boundary. As a result, the transition (T) matrix elements, relating the expansion coefficients of the scattered wave to those of the incident wave, are calculated.     • Optical signal propagation through underwater channels is affected by three main degrading phenomena, namely, absorption, scattering, and fading. In this paper, we experimentally study the statistical distribution of intensity fluctuations in underwater wireless optical channels with random temperature and salinity variations, as well as the presence of air bubbles. In particular, we define different scenarios to produce random fluctuations on the water refractive index across the propagation path and, then, examine the accuracy of various statistical distributions in terms of their goodness of fit to the experimental data. We also obtain the channel coherence time to address the average period of fading temporal variations. The scenarios under consideration cover a wide range of scintillation index from weak to strong turbulence. Moreover, the effects of beam-expander-and-collimator (BEC) at the transmitter side and aperture averaging lens (AAL) at the receiver side are experimentally investigated. We show that the use of a transmitter BEC and/or a receiver AAL suits single-lobe distributions, such that the generalized Gamma and exponentiated Weibull distributions can excellently match the histograms of the acquired data. Our experimental results further reveal that the channel coherence time is on the order of 10-3 s and larger which implies to the slow fading turbulent channels.

    • OBJECTIVES: Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) regulate cell survival and differentiation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the activation pattern of different MAPKs [extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38] after cerebral ischemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Rats were subjected to cerebral ischemia using a model for transient (2 h) and permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The rats were allowed 6 h to 1 week of survival before immunohistochemical evaluation with phospho-specific antibodies, recognizing activated MAPKs. RESULTS: ERK was activated in ipsilateral blood vessels, neurons and glia, but also in contralateral vessels. JNK activation was absent in neurons but appeared in arterial blood vessels and glia at the lesion side. Active p38 was observed in macrophages in maturing infarcts. CONCLUSIONS: ERK and JNK may participate in the angiogenic response to cerebral ischemia. ERK, but not JNK, was activated in neurons, possibly indicating a pathophysiologic role. Active p38 might be involved in the inflammatory reaction.
