    • The photon-induced Auger and photoelectron spectra of the argonlike ions Cl- (in NaCl), K+ (in KCl), Ca2+ (in CaCl2 and CaF2), and Sc3+ (in Sc2O3) have been measured in the vicinity of the L23 absorption edges of these ions. It is shown that at the 2p6→2p53d(4s) resonance a spectator structure appears in the L23M23M23 Auger spectra, which shifts to higher kinetic energies with increasing photon energy. This structure originates from the 3p-23d(4s) final configuration arising as a product of the Auger resonant-inelastic-scattering process of the incident photons. We demonstrate that the peculiarities of this process and the role of the collapsing 3d electron in it can be largely understood in terms of an atomic treatment. The solid-state effects, caused by the crystal field and the lattice polarization, may play an additional role.

    • The decay of core-excited electronic states in free 1,3 trans butadiene molecules has been studied using high-resolution synchrotron radiation and electron spectrometry. The core-level energy shift between the terminal and central carbon atoms is 0.64 eV making selective excitation of core electrons from these atoms possible. Resonant excitation to the au(*) valence state leads to autoionizing decay channels which proceed according to the atomic site in the molecule. The radiationless decay is localized, and certain molecular orbitals are excluded from the decay depending upon the site of the core hole. This phenomenon is confirmed by semiempirical INDO calculations based upon the equivalent core approximation. The vibrational structure of the resonances below the carbon K edge has been measured and fit to extract vibrational energies and intensities, chemical shifts, and the lifetimes of the centrally and terminally excited states. The C 1s spectrum is also measured with vibrational resolution and the energies of the normal vibrational modes are extracted. The bond lengths are derived by application of a linear coupling analysis.

    • Energy distributions of slow electrons (0 to 10eV) emitted by thin layers of NaCl and KBr irradiated by monochromatic XUV photons with various energies in the interval of 50 to 300 eV are measured. For all cases the photoelectron spectrum starts with an intense peak of slow secondaries and has a hot-secondary structure at the energies 1 to 5 eV. The smaller the photon absorption depth, the stronger is this structure. An attempt is made to reproduce such a behaviour of spectra by a Monte Carlo simulation of electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering sequences induced in solids by XUV photon absorption. It appears that for high-energy ( > 2 to 3 eV) conduction electrons the electron-phonon scattering is mainly due to acoustic phonons.

    • We report on the characteristics and first results from the soft X-ray beam line I411, based on an undulator at the third generation synchrotron facility MAX II, Sweden. The beam line is designed for high-resolution, angle-resolved electron spectroscopy on gases, liquids and solids. Main components are the modified SX700 monochromator and the end station, both of which were previously used at beam line 51 at MAX I. The end station is equipped with a rotatable SES-200 hemispherical electron-analyser. Before the end station, a one-metre section is reserved for exchangeable experimental set-ups. The usable photon energy range is 50-1500 eV and the photon flux is two orders of magnitudes higher compared to beam line 51. At 400 eV a resolving power of about 5700 in the first order of the monochromator grating could be obtained. In gas phase, a total electron energy resolution of 16 meV has been achieved. Detailed results on the undulator performance, flux, photon and electron energy resolution as well as some technical details are presented here. As an example of the capabilities of the beam line I411, we present the fully vibrationally resolved Auger resonant Raman electron spectrum of gas-phase N 2.

    • The L23M23M23 Auger spectra of K+ L23 excitation in potassium halides are measured using photon excitation with different energies in the region of the K+ L23 absorption edge (around 300 eV). It is shown that the screening of the two 3p holes caused by the collapsed 3d electron of the K+ L23 exciton leads to a considerable shift (by about (6÷7) eV) of the K+ L23M23M23 Auger bands to higher energies. Only the low-energy component of the crystal-field-split K+ 3d orbital forms a genuine bound state with 2p holes, whereas its high-energy component lies in the conduction band continuum and behaves like a shape resonance.

    • Sporulation in aerial hyphae of Streptomyces coelicolor involves profound changes in regulation of fundamental morphogenetic and cell cycle processes to convert the filamentous and multinucleoid cells to small unigenomic spores. Here, a novel sporulation locus consisting of smeA (encoding a small putative membrane protein) and sffA (encoding a SpoIIIE/FtsK-family protein) is characterized. Deletion of smeA-sffA gave rise to pleiotropic effects on spore maturation, and influenced the segregation of chromosomes and placement of septa during sporulation. Both smeA and sffA were expressed specifically in apical cells of sporogenic aerial hyphae simultaneously with or slightly after Z-ring assembly. The presence of smeA-like genes in streptomycete chromosomes, plasmids and transposons, often paired with a gene for a SpoIIIE/FtsK- or Tra-like protein, indicates that SmeA and SffA functions might be related to DNA transfer. During spore development SffA accumulated specifically at sporulation septa where it colocalized with FtsK. However, sffA did not show redundancy with ftsK, and SffA function appeared distinct from the DNA translocase activity displayed by FtsK during closure of sporulation septa. The septal localization of SffA was dependent on SmeA, suggesting that SmeA may act as an assembly factor for SffA and possibly other proteins required during spore maturation.

    • We report on the build-up of the new undulator beam line 1411 at the third-generation synchrotron radiation facility MAX II in Lund, Sweden. This beam line is based on an upgraded version of the modified SX700-monochromator and the end station which were installed previously at beam line 51 at MAX I. The end station is equipped with a rotatable Scienta hemispherical electron-analyser making angle-resolved high resolution electron spectroscopy possible for various kinds of samples. The beam line performance will be considerably improved on MAX II due to a new undulator and the superior light source properties, e.g. the small vertical electron beam size. Undulator spectra have been measured and estimates of the photon flux at the experiment and the expected energy resolution are presented. The parameters for a new refocusing mirror were defined by ray tracing using the beam waist of the undulator. The beam line length was extended by 1 m to offer additional space for exchangeable experimental chambers.

    • Bacterial cell morphogenesis requires coordination among multiple cellular systems, including the bacterial cytoskeleton and the cell wall. In the vibrioid bacterium Caulobacter crescentus, the intermediate filament-like protein crescentin forms a cell envelope-associated cytoskeletal structure that controls cell wall growth to generate cell curvature. We undertook a genetic screen to find other cellular components important for cell curvature. Here we report that deletion of a gene (wbqL) involved in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis pathway abolishes cell curvature. Loss of WbqL function leads to the accumulation of an aberrant O-polysaccharide species and to the release of the S layer in the culture medium. Epistasis and microscopy experiments show that neither S-layer nor O-polysaccharide production is required for curved cell morphology per se but that production of the altered O-polysaccharide species abolishes cell curvature by apparently interfering with the ability of the crescentin structure to associate with the cell envelope. Our data suggest that perturbations in a cellular pathway that is itself fully dispensable for cell curvature can cause a disruption of cell morphogenesis, highlighting the delicate harmony among unrelated cellular systems. Using the wbqL mutant, we also show that the normal assembly and growth properties of the crescentin structure are independent of its association with the cell envelope. However, this envelope association is important for facilitating the local disruption of the stable crescentin structure at the division site during cytokinesis.

The strong dependence of the electronic transition amplitudes on internuclear distance at avoided crossings causes new, and even anomalous, spectral features, and can bring about a breakdown of the generally accepted participator or spectator classification of the transitions. We report, and apply the theory on, an experimental observation of the electron decay of the N 1s-->pi* core-excited level in N-2 the B(2)Sigma (+)(u) final state with peculiar, non-Franck-Condon, vibrational intensity distributions.

The theory was also applied to nitrogen molecule in the core-excited level to analyze the electron decay process. The dependence of internuclear distance on electron transition amplitude was considered important with respect to the breakdown process of the transition. The correlation between the nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom was also reported.
