  • A socio-economic exploration of mobile phone service have-nots in Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 16:3, s. 415-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most studies in the mobile communication field focus on the acceptance of the technology rather than the resistance of it, a trend that makes researchers try to understand only the powerful actors in society. Instead, this paper explores the socio-economic characteristics of mobile phone service have-nots. Based on an analysis of samples from three consecutive nationwide annual surveys in Sweden, this study finds that two socio-economic factors - age and the household income - remain significant to explain non-usage of mobile phone services. Other variables dynamically change over time without a significant effect. This finding supports the argument that most socio-economic factors are transient at different stages of the adoption of innovation. Since the benefits of mobile phones are related to social networks (the more people you know, the more beneficial), it is not surprising that, in the long run, elderly people with low income, who typically have a decreasing social network, find this technology no longer purposeful and finally refuse it. This indicates that the status of the have-nots may not reflect socio-economic inequalities in general, but rather individuals' preference when managing their social situation. This is relevant with the argument that a universal service policy should be based on connectivity, that is, people's need for communication rather than solely promoting subsidizing a particular technology or service. The policy, therefore, should consider the technological frame sharing - the interpretation of the technology shared by members of a relevant social group, that is, users, service providers and regulators, to bring a more socially constructed technology that can protect individuals with less socio-economic power from being socially excluded.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Svensk biblioteksforskning. - : Högskolan i Borås. - 0284-4354 .- 1653-5235. ; 16:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes a study that investigated the need for and challenges connected to the establishment of a collaboratory - a sociotechnical forum where information and other resources can be made accessible and used by practitioners within library and information science. In order to identify needs and challenges interviews were carried out with a number of practitioners at a number of different institutions. The results reveal that there is a need for a collaboratory in order to facilitate the sharing of personal knowledge “on demand”. It is of great importance that the collaboratory is well integrated with practitioner’s daily activities.

  • Framing Social Interaction in Shared Virtual Environments: The Influence of Technical and Social Factors
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Virtual Reality (VR) for multiple users is a new technology which is increasingly used for diverse purposes such as distributed collaborative work, visualization, and entertainment. Despite this, little is yet known about what kind of social interaction the technology generates. The aim of this thesis is twofold: to contribute to the technological development of well-functioning multi-user VR systems and similar communication technologies, and to make a contribution to the multi-disciplinary research field by proposing an integrated approach for future studies of social interaction in Shared Virtual Environments (SVEs). The thesis consists of five studies which analyze different aspects of interaction in SVEs. The first study investigated how different VR systems influence the subjective perception of presence, co-presence, collaboration, task contribution and task performance, when carrying out a collaborative task in a SVE. The second study investigated whether, in an Internet-based SVE, language minorities are usually accepted or rejected by the language majority and how different social conditions affect the outcome of the language encounters. The third study is an analysis of status differences and stratification in SVEs. The fourth study investigated how the communication process in a SVE varies depending on which type of technical system is used. The fifth study explored how players of a massively multi-player online role-playing game socialize on- and offline and how the social interaction is influenced by social and technical factors. The five empirical studies contribute towards an understanding of the technical and social factors which influence interaction in SVEs. The studies support the overall aim of the thesis in that they make suggestions for technology development and design and for further studies of multi-user VR and other communication technologies. The thesis also provides broader insights into some of the problems that accompany new communication technologies and suggests solutions to some of these.

  • Making it Open and Keeping it Safe: e-Enabled Data-Sharing in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Sociologica. - 0001-6993 .- 1502-3869. ; 52:2, s. 213-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on data-sharing – a central aspect of an ambitious e-Science programme recently embarked on in Sweden. Data-sharing has become a powerful and promising direction in e-Science in general, even though fraughtwith difficulties. Sweden has a unique position in relation to data-sharing: a worldunique set of social science and medical data collections, a well-established tradition of regulations concerning data protection, a widely used form of personal identification that allows integration of databases, and a population that generally trusts researchers and the Swedish state with personal data. The aim of this study was to find out how Swedish database owners/managers and database users – key actorsin the Swedish e-Science enterprise – anticipate the way that databases will be built up, managed and used in the future, and how this will influence e-Science. For thispurpose, these actors were interviewed and official documents on the topic were studied. It is concluded that openness and the integrity of personal data are particularly critical elements for the success of a range of future e-Science endeavours in Sweden and elsewhere.

  • Making it Open and Keeping it Safe: e-Enabled Data Sharing in Sweden and Related Issues
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on e-Social Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden, following the lead of other countries, has recently embarked on an ambitious e-Science programme. This paper focuses on one central aspect of this programme; data sharing. The reason for this focus is twofold: one reason is that data sharing has become one of the most powerful and promising directions in e-Science in general, even if also laden with difficulties. The second reason is that Sweden has a particularly unique position in relation to data sharing in several respects: Sweden has a world-unique set of social science and medical data collections, a well-established tradition of regulations concerning data protection, a widely used form of personal identification that allows integration of databases, and a population that generally trusts researchers and the Swedish state with personal data. The aim of the study was to investigate how e-science may influence the way which research data will be shared in the future. For this purpose stakeholders involved in Swedish e-Science data sharing and its new initiatives were interviewed and official documents on the topic were studied. The paper draws the conclusion that openness and integrity protection are particularly critical elements for the success of a range of future e-science endeavours – in Sweden and elsewhere.

  • Next Generation e-Researchers : Doctoral Students in Social Sciences and Humanities in Sweden and their Attitudes towards Open Access, Open Repositories and e-Research
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the 5th International Conference on e-Social Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Swedish research politics there are, at the moment, several actions taken to enhance existing and develop new research infrastructures (Axelsson and Schroeder 2007). As one example, the Swedish National Data Service (SND, http://www.snd.gu.se), an operative key actor, is currently working on coordinating existing data resources and increasing deposition of research data to the national data service and re-use of those data. SND has, as a part of this endeavour, recently conducted two survey studies, targeted at professors (N=549) and doctoral students within social sciences and humanities departments (N=1147) at Swedish universities and university colleges, in order to obtain knowledge regarding existing use and re-use of digital research data and archiving practices as well as obstacles to increased digital research data sharing. This paper focuses on the doctoral students’ data and the results are compared with the results from the parallel study of the professors and from a recent survey targeted at professors in various social sciences and humanities disciplines at Finnish universities (Kuula and Borg, 2008). The results from the current study show that doctoral students in general expressed a great uncertainty about questions of amounts of reusable digital data and effective interventions to enhance accessibility to digital research data. They identify research ethics as an important barrier to sharing digital research data, while professors emphasize lack of resources for researchers to document and make their data accessible to others as the most important obstacle. Concerning interventions to enhancing re-use of digital data, the majority of the doctoral students and the professors thought it should be effective to receive more information about accessible research data in data archives or databases. Nearly 100 % in both groups reported that also more of training in research methods, digital research databases and information about accessible e-tools would be effective interventions. The most effective interventions for enhancing accessibility to digital data were reported in terms of that research grants should include funds for preparing the data for sharing and archiving and that archiving data for use by the scientific community is acknowledged as a scientific merit. Surprisingly, when it comes to the degree of urgency in sharing their own data, the professors seem to be a bit more eager to share data than the doctoral students.

  • Perpetual and personal: Swedish young adults and their use of mobile phones
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 12:1, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile phones have become widespread among teenagers and young adults across the developed world. This article describes how 18-24-year-olds in Sweden, a country with one of the world's highest penetration rates, use mobile phones for various purposes and in different settings, and what they think of the appropriateness of using the mobile phone in a range of social contexts. Data are derived from a Swedish national survey. We find that in their everyday lives, young adults ( compared with older people) seem to be in perpetual contact with family, friends and colleagues, via traditional voice communication but preferably via text messages. If this pattern can be seen in other national samples, we might argue that use of and attitudes towards mobile phones are more dependent upon life stage than upon culture.

  • Taking a New Direction: Behavioral Interventions in Higher Education supported by Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Engineering Education in Sustainable Development (EESD10), Gothenburg, Sweden, September 19-22, 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • According to Ajzen [1], intentions to perform behaviors of various kinds can be predicted on the basis of attitudes towards the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. In the light of this theory a several weeks long exercise within six higher education courses was conducted, in order to support the students to take a new direction in their every day lives in terms of carrying out sustainable and self-imposed actions such as decreasing the use of energy in the household and eating lower on the food chain. An online questionnaire was distributed in order to find out how effective this exercise was, what the key operational mechanisms in the exercise were, and if this exercise made an impact on other areas than the one selected for this course. An analysis showed that a majority of the students perceived the exercise inspiring and motivating, supporting change of behavior in the intended, new direction. There were, however, a number of suggestions for improvement, to be seriously considered for future implementation. For example, there seems to be a need for clarifying the relevance of the task for future engineering work life. The two key operational mechanisms identified were the individual’s own attitude towards the specific behaviour and the perception that the task was within their control. A further analysis also showed that half of the students still carried out the sustainable actions after 3 months to up to 2 years and that a considerable part of them had changed their behavior within other areas. This study shows that this type of behavioral change, within a course curriculum, is very effective, and that formative research, with Ajzen's theoretical framework as a foundation, could be a starting point for this to happen.

  • Immersiveness and Symmetry in Copresent Scenarios
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceeding of IEEE VR2005. ; , s. 171-178
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaboration at a distance has long been a research goal of distributed virtual environments. A number of recent technologies, including immersive projection technology systems (IPTs) and head-mounted displays (HMDs), promise a new generation of technologies that are more intuitive to use than desktop-based systems. This paper presents an experiment that compares collaboration in five different settings. Pairs collaborated on the same puzzle-solving task using one of: an IPT connected to another IPT, an IPT connected to an HMD, an IPT connected to a desktop system, two connected desktop systems, or face-to-face collaboration with real objects. The findings demonstrate the benefits of using immersive technologies, and show the advantages of using symmetrical settings for better performance. Some usability problems of the different distributed settings are addressed, as well as factors such as “presence” and “copresence” and how these contribute to the participants’ overall experiences

  • Wherever Hardware, There’ll be Games: The Evolution of Hardware and Shifting Industrial Leadership in the Gaming Industry
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Digra 2007 papers.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper concerns the role of hardware in the evolution of the video game industry. The paper argues that it is necessary to understand the hardware side of the industry in several senses. Hardware has a key role with regard to innovation and industrial leadership. Fundamentally, the process can be understood as a function of Moore’s law. Because of the constantly evolving technological frontier, platform migration has become necessary. Industrial success has become dependent upon the ability to avoid technological lock-ins. Moreover, different gaming platforms has had a key role in the process of market widening. Innovatory platforms has opened up previously untouched customer segments. It is argued that today’s market situation seems to be ideal to the emergence of new innovatory industrial combinations.

  • Ingår i: Didaktisk dialog i högre utbildning. - 9789144139029 ; , s. 163-181

    • This publication is a commented transcript of a witness seminar in February 2010 within the research project ”The Swedish digital wonder in the advertising industry”. The purpose of the seminar, which was open to the public, was to document the shifting boundaries between the advertising, media, and information technology industries in the wake of the breakthrough of the Internet from the mid-1990s. We invited six persons, who at that time were centrally placed in these industries, to share their reminiscences and comment on testimonies of the other participants. The seminar was moderated by two researchers in the project. The transcript has been edited prudently in order to improve the readability while preserving the colloquial character. We have moreover provided the transcript with explanatory footnotes and a short introduction. The purpose of publishing the transcript in this series is twofold: to create an oral history source and make it accessible, but also to introduce the witness seminar as an historical documentation method in economic history and business history.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Library Hi Tech. - : Emerald. - 0737-8831. ; 27:2, s. 191-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present current and ongoing research investigating new ways of working across geographic distances and time within library and information science (LIS). Design/methodology/approach – A total of four studies were conducted focusing on: the design of a virtual research environment (VRE) to facilitate the sharing of data collection instruments among students, researchers and professionals; new ways professionals and researchers can collaborate; collaborative decision making in the context of purchasing a library management system; and collaboration among LIS professionals. Findings – Early results show that VREs within LIS can build on previous VRE research which focused on other domains. However, there are several unique characteristics of LIS that place requirements on VREs and which are not yet implemented within VREs and that offer unique opportunities for VREs to enhance LIS research, education and practice. Originality/value – This paper reports on ongoing research and preliminary findings of unique studies investigating how VREs could enhance LIS research and professional practice, and how LIS research and practice can inspire the next generation of VREs.
