  • Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLife. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions.

  • Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 569:7755, s. 260-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities(.)(1,2) This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity(3-6). Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean BMI segregated by place of residence (a rural or urban area) from 1985 to 2017. We show that, contrary to the dominant paradigm, more than 55% of the global rise in mean BMI from 1985 to 2017-and more than 80% in some low- and middle-income regions-was due to increases in BMI in rural areas. This large contribution stems from the fact that, with the exception of women in sub-Saharan Africa, BMI is increasing at the same rate or faster in rural areas than in cities in low- and middle-income regions. These trends have in turn resulted in a closing-and in some countries reversal-of the gap in BMI between urban and rural areas in low- and middle-income countries, especially for women. In high-income and industrialized countries, we noted a persistently higher rural BMI, especially for women. There is an urgent need for an integrated approach to rural nutrition that enhances financial and physical access to healthy foods, to avoid replacing the rural undernutrition disadvantage in poor countries with a more general malnutrition disadvantage that entails excessive consumption of low-quality calories.

  • Outcomes after perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with proximal femoral fractures: an international cohort study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMJ open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 11:11, s. e050830-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies have demonstrated high rates of mortality in people with proximal femoral fracture and SARS-CoV-2, but there is limited published data on the factors that influence mortality for clinicians to make informed treatment decisions. This study aims to report the 30-day mortality associated with perioperative infection of patients undergoing surgery for proximal femoral fractures and to examine the factors that influence mortality in a multivariate analysis.SettingProspective, international, multicentre, observational cohort study.ParticipantsPatients undergoing any operation for a proximal femoral fracture from 1 February to 30 April 2020 and with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection (either 7 days prior or 30-day postoperative).Primary outcome30-day mortality. Multivariate modelling was performed to identify factors associated with 30-day mortality.ResultsThis study reports included 1063 patients from 174 hospitals in 19 countries. Overall 30-day mortality was 29.4% (313/1063). In an adjusted model, 30-day mortality was associated with male gender (OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.68 to 3.13, p<0.001), age >80 years (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.31, p=0.013), preoperative diagnosis of dementia (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.16, p=0.005), kidney disease (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.18 to 2.55, p=0.005) and congestive heart failure (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.06 to 2.48, p=0.025). Mortality at 30 days was lower in patients with a preoperative diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.6 (0.42 to 0.85), p=0.004). There was no difference in mortality in patients with an increase to delay in surgery (p=0.220) or type of anaesthetic given (p=0.787).ConclusionsPatients undergoing surgery for a proximal femoral fracture with a perioperative infection of SARS-CoV-2 have a high rate of mortality. This study would support the need for providing these patients with individualised medical and anaesthetic care, including medical optimisation before theatre. Careful preoperative counselling is needed for those with a proximal femoral fracture and SARS-CoV-2, especially those in the highest risk groups.Trial registration numberNCT04323644

  • Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 615:7954, s. 874-883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

  • Ingår i: Science (New York, N.Y.). - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 309:5740, s. 1559-1563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes comprehensive polling of transcription start and termination sites and analysis of previously unidentified full-length complementary DNAs derived from the mouse genome. We identify the 5′ and 3′ boundaries of 181,047 transcripts with extensive variation in transcripts arising from alternative promoter usage, splicing, and polyadenylation. There are 16,247 new mouse protein-coding transcripts, including 5154 encoding previously unidentified proteins. Genomic mapping of the transcriptome reveals transcriptional forests, with overlapping transcription on both strands, separated by deserts in which few transcripts are observed. The data provide a comprehensive platform for the comparative analysis of mammalian transcriptional regulation in differentiation and development.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 65:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Ta-164 were populated in the Nd-142(Al-27,5n)Ta-164 reaction and investigated using the AFRODITE spectrometer Arran. The yrast rotational decay sequence Lip to spin 21(-) is identified for the first time and assigned to the pi[514]9/2(-) x nu[660]1/2(+) configuration. A less intense. excited hand is also identified. Low-spin signature inversion is observed in the yrast band, and is compared with the extended total Routhian surface calculations. It is likely that quadrupole pairing plays a role in generating the anomalous signature splitting, but an additional mechanism apart front the assumed mean field and quadrupole pairing interaction may be required to account for the experimental data.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • β-Ga2O3 is one of the most promising wide-bandgap materials for optoelectronic applications as well as a conducting substrate for GaN-based device technologies. Single crystals of undoped β-Ga2O3 are grown by the optical floating zone technique utilizing compressed dry air as growth atmosphere. The properties of β-Ga2O3 are highly anisotropic. Optimization of the processing recipe for wafers along different orientations suitable for device development is conducted. Structural, optical, and electrical properties of the wafers are determined. Efforts are made to fabricate Schottky diodes based on Pt/Ti/Au–β-Ga2O3–Ti/Au device structures. Devices are fabricated on (−201) cut wafers. The device characteristics are discussed in detail.

  • Ingår i: Bmc Bioinformatics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2105. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Our knowledge of global protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks in complex organisms such as humans is hindered by technical limitations of current methods. Results: On the basis of short co-occurring polypeptide regions, we developed a tool called MP-PIPE capable of predicting a global human PPI network within 3 months. With a recall of 23% at a precision of 82.1%, we predicted 172,132 putative PPIs. We demonstrate the usefulness of these predictions through a range of experiments. Conclusions: The speed and accuracy associated with MP-PIPE can make this a potential tool to study individual human PPI networks (from genomic sequences alone) for personalized medicine.

  • Global subterranean estuaries modify groundwater nutrient loading to the ocean
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Limnology And Oceanography Letters. - 2378-2242.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Terrestrial groundwater travels through subterranean estuaries before reaching the sea. Groundwater-derived nutrients drive coastal water quality, primary production, and eutrophication. We determined how dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) are transformed within subterranean estuaries and estimated submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient loads compiling > 10,000 groundwater samples from 216 sites worldwide. Nutrients exhibited complex, nonconservative behavior in subterranean estuaries. Fresh groundwater DIN and DIP are usually produced, and DON is consumed during transport. Median total SGD (saline and fresh) fluxes globally were 5.4, 2.6, and 0.18 Tmol yr−1 for DIN, DON, and DIP, respectively. Despite large natural variability, total SGD fluxes likely exceed global riverine nutrient export. Fresh SGD is a small source of new nutrients, but saline SGD is an important source of mostly recycled nutrients. Nutrients exported via SGD via subterranean estuaries are critical to coastal biogeochemistry and a significant nutrient source to the oceans.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on dielectrics and electrical insulation. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1070-9878 .- 1558-4135. ; 29:3, s. 956-964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work reports an experimental and theoretical analysis of the rheological properties of mineral oil-based SiO2 nanofluid for their potential applications in transformer insulation. The flow electrification mechanism on the nanofluids with different surfactants such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), oleic acid, and Span 80 is studied using a spinning disk technique. The results show a higher streaming current for the nanofluids with CTAB as a surfactant compared to oleic acid and Span 80. The rheological behavior of nanofluids is explored with the double gap concentric cylinder geometry. The variation of shear stress with shear rate follows a power law relationship along with a yield stress observed for all the nanofluids. A transition is seen from storage modulus to dominant loss modulus for the nanofluids during the frequency sweep analysis, whereas no transition is observed in the case of mineral oil. In addition, regression analysis using artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms are performed on the experimentally measured viscosity of the nanofluids in order to estimate theoretical parameters and provide insights into the streaming current formation. The desirable rheological characteristics of nanofluids are identified for achieving enhanced insulation performance in transformers.

  • Effect of Prior Deformation on the Formation of the Martensite Phase in Ti-6Al-4V Alloy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: JOM. - : Springer Nature. - 1047-4838 .- 1543-1851. ; 74:11, s. 4081-4093
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of prior deformation on the evolution of the martensite phase in Ti-6Al-4V alloy is reported by varying the hot-rolling temperature to have different stored energies. While the morphology of the martensite phase is greatly influenced by the prior deformation, the phase fraction is primarily dependent on the quenching temperature. The compositional deviation from the equilibrium condition, emerging from the differences in the diffusion of elements at different rolling temperatures, govern the nucleation and aspect ratio of the martensite laths. Higher stored energy in the deformed samples, calculated as the dislocation density, is found to derive the formation of a twinned plate martensite. Martensitic transformation, irrespective of the prior deformation condition, induces a strong variant selection based on the minimization of the transformation strain energy. However, a strong correlation between the morphology and the character of the intervariant boundaries of the martensite phase is established. The intervariant boundary distribution in martensite showed three major angle–axis pairs associated with the Burgers orientation relationship. The hardness of the martensite phase is determined by the solid solution strengthening, martensite morphology, and microstrain present in the sample.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 569:7755, s. 215-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Free-flowing rivers (FFRs) support diverse, complex and dynamic ecosystems globally, providing important societal and economic services. Infrastructure development threatens the ecosystem processes, biodiversity and services that these rivers support. Here we assess the connectivity status of 12 million kilometres of rivers globally and identify those that remain free-flowing in their entire length. Only 37 per cent of rivers longer than 1,000 kilometres remain free-flowing over their entire length and 23 per cent flow uninterrupted to the ocean. Very long FFRs are largely restricted to remote regions of the Arctic and of the Amazon and Congo basins. In densely populated areas only few very long rivers remain free-flowing, such as the Irrawaddy and Salween. Dams and reservoirs and their up- and downstream propagation of fragmentation and flow regulation are the leading contributors to the loss of river connectivity. By applying a new method to quantify riverine connectivity and map FFRs, we provide a foundation for concerted global and national strategies to maintain or restore them.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active tuberculosis (TB) often presents with advanced pulmonary disease, including irreversible lung damage and cavities. Cavitary pathology contributes to antibiotic failure, transmission, morbidity and mortality. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), in particular MMP-1 are implicated in TB pathogenesis. We explored the mechanisms relating MMP/TIMP imbalance to cavity formation in a modified rabbit model of cavitary TB. Our model results in consistent progression of consolidation to human-like cavities (100% by day 28) with resultant bacillary burdens (>10(7) CFU/g) far greater than those found in matched granulomatous tissue (10(5) CFU/g). Using a novel, breath-hold computerized tomography scanning and image analysis protocol. We show that cavities develop rapidly from areas of densely consolidated tissue. Radiological change correlated with a decrease in functional lung tissue as estimated by changes in lung density during controlled pulmonary expansion (R(2) =0.6356, p < 0.0001). We demonstrated that the expression of interstitial collagenase (MMP-1) is specifically greater in cavitary compared to granulomatous lesions (p < 0.01), and that TIMP-3 significantly decreases at the cavity surface. Our findings demonstrate that an MMP-1/TIMP imbalance, is associated with the progression of consolidated regions to cavities containing very high bacterial burdens. Our model provided mechanistic insight, correlating with human disease at the pathological, microbiological and molecular levels,. It also provides a strategy to investigate therapeutics in the context of complex TB pathology. We used these findings to predict a MMP/TIMP balance in active TB; and confirmed this in human plasma, revealing the potential of MMP/TIMP levels as key components of a diagnostic matrix aimed at distinguishing active from latent TB (PPV=92.9%; 95%CI 66.1-99.8%, NPV=85.6%; 95%CI 77.0-91.9%).

  • Terminal Complement Inhibitor Eculizumab in Atypical Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 368:23, s. 2169-2181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a genetic, life-threatening, chronic disease of complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy. Plasma exchange or infusion may transiently maintain normal levels of hematologic measures but does not treat the underlying systemic disease. Methods We conducted two prospective phase 2 trials in which patients with atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome who were 12 years of age or older received eculizumab for 26 weeks and during long-term extension phases. Patients with low platelet counts and renal damage (in trial 1) and those with renal damage but no decrease in the platelet count of more than 25% for at least 8 weeks during plasma exchange or infusion (in trial 2) were recruited. The primary end points included a change in the platelet count (in trial 1) and thrombotic microangiopathy event-free status (no decrease in the platelet count of >25%, no plasma exchange or infusion, and no initiation of dialysis) (in trial 2). Results A total of 37 patients (17 in trial 1 and 20 in trial 2) received eculizumab for a median of 64 and 62 weeks, respectively. Eculizumab resulted in increases in the platelet count; in trial 1, the mean increase in the count from baseline to week 26 was 73x10(9) per liter (P<0.001). In trial 2, 80% of the patients had thrombotic microangiopathy event-free status. Eculizumab was associated with significant improvement in all secondary end points, with continuous, time-dependent increases in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR). In trial 1, dialysis was discontinued in 4 of 5 patients. Earlier intervention with eculizumab was associated with significantly greater improvement in the estimated GFR. Eculizumab was also associated with improvement in health-related quality of life. No cumulative toxicity of therapy or serious infection-related adverse events, including meningococcal infections, were observed through the extension period. Conclusions Eculizumab inhibited complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy and was associated with significant time-dependent improvement in renal function in patients with atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

    • Al-12Si specimens are produced by selective laser melting (SLM) from gas atomized powders. An extremely fine cellular structure is observed with residual free Si along the cellular boundaries. Room temperature tensile tests reveal a remarkable mechanical behavior: the samples show yield and tensile strengths of about 260. MPa and 380. MPa, respectively, along with fracture strain of ~3%. The effect of annealing on microstructure and related tensile properties is examined and the results demonstrate that the mechanical behavior of the Al-12Si SLM samples can be tuned within a wide range of strength and ductility through proper annealing treatment.

  • Structural and Mechanical Characterization of Zr 58.5Ti 8.2Cu 14.2Ni 11.4Al 7.7 Bulk Metallic Glass
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944. ; 5:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal stability, structure and mechanical properties of the multi-component Zr 58.5Ti 8.2Cu 14.2Ni 11.4Al 7.7 bulk metallic glass have been studied in detail. The glassy material displays good thermal stability against crystallization and a fairly large supercooled liquid region of 52 K. During heating, the alloy transforms into a metastable icosahedral quasicrystalline phase in the first stage of crystallization. At high temperatures, the quasicrystalline phase undergoes a transformation to form tetragonal and cubic NiZr 2-type phases. Room-temperature compression tests of the as-cast sample show good mechanical properties, namely, high compressive strength of about 1,630 MPa and fracture strain of 3.3%. This is combined with a density of 6.32 g/cm 3 and values of Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of 0.377 and 77 GPa, respectively. The mechanical properties of the glass can be further improved by cold rolling. The compressive strength rises to 1,780 MPa and the fracture strain increases to 8.3% for the material cold-rolled to a diameter reduction of 10%.

  • Glutaminase Deficiency Caused by Short Tandem Repeat Expansion in GLS
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 380:15, s. 1433-1441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report an inborn error of metabolism caused by an expansion of a GCA-repeat tract in the 5′ untranslated region of the gene encoding glutaminase (GLS) that was identified through detailed clinical and biochemical phenotyping, combined with whole-genome sequencing. The expansion was observed in three unrelated patients who presented with an early-onset delay in overall development, progressive ataxia, and elevated levels of glutamine. In addition to ataxia, one patient also showed cerebellar atrophy. The expansion was associated with a relative deficiency of GLS messenger RNA transcribed from the expanded allele, which probably resulted from repeat-mediated chromatin changes upstream of the GLS repeat. Our discovery underscores the importance of careful examination of regions of the genome that are typically excluded from or poorly captured by exome sequencing.

  • On the formation and stability of precipitate phases in a near lamellar γ-TiAl based alloy during creep
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Intermetallics (Barking). - : Elsevier. - 0966-9795 .- 1879-0216. ; 98, s. 115-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation, evolution and stability of metastable phases observed in the γ-TiAl based alloy Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb was studied under creep deformation with stress applied at two different hard orientations in a highly textured as-cast + HIPed material. Previously we have reported that the metastable phase Ti(Al,Cr)2 with C14 Laves phase structure forms at the γ-α2 interface which acts as sink for the alloying elements ejected from the dissolving α2 phase and also expected to effectively control the interface stresses through short range diffusion and modifications in the chemical composition [1]. Ab initio density functional theory based calculations were carried out to evaluate the effect of choice of lattice position and site occupancy of aluminium atoms in the Ti(Al,Cr)2 structure on the lattice parameter variation and thermodynamic stability. C14 with the composition 25 at. % Al was found to have lattice parameter values close to the inter-planar spacing of <110>γ and <10-10>α2 which would have a lower misfit with C14 across the interface. From the cohesive energy calculations, Laves phase C14 with a constrained lattice parameter due to the adjoining phases, exhibits higher stability than the B2 and L10 structures across a range of compositions studied. Electron diffraction simulations of C14 with a composition of 25% Al compared with the experimental data suggest that the structure C14 has taken up either a random site occupancy compared to a specific choice of ordering to minimize the interfacial stress. Though the experimental evidences do not strongly support a long-range ordering theory in C14, short-range ordering could be a tangible choice for alleviating interface misfits. The ability of C14 to assume different lattice parameters at and far from the α2-γ interface also suggest that the C14 acts as buffer layer between α2 and γ phases in the presence of local stresses, although this is not the thermodynamically expected phase at the temperature of creep experiment.

  • Enabling Precision Medicine via Contemporary and Future Communication Technologies: A Survey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 11, s. 21210-21240
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precision medicine (PM) is an innovative medical approach that considers differences in the individuals’ omics, medical histories, lifestyles, and environmental information in treating diseases. To fully achieve the envisaged gains of PM, various contemporary and future technologies have to be employed, among which are nanotechnology, sensor network, big data, and artificial intelligence. These technologies and other applications require a communication network that will enable them to work in tandem for the benefit of PM. Hence, communication technology serves as the nervous system of PM, without which the entire system collapses. Therefore, it is essential to explore and determine the candidate communication technology requirements that can guarantee the envisioned gains of PM. To the best of our knowledge, no work exploring how communication technology directly impacts the development and deployment of PM solutions exists. This survey paper is designed to stimulate discussions on PM from the communication engineering perspective. We introduce the fundamentals of PM and the demands in terms of quality of service that each of the enabling technologies of PM places on the communication network. We explore the information in the literature to suggest the ideal metric values of the key performance indicators for the implementation of the different components of PM. The comparative analysis of the suitability of the contemporary and future communication technologies for PM implementation is discussed. Finally, some open research challenges for the candidate communication technologies that will enable the full implementation of PM solutions are highlighted.

  • Systemic Levels of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines and Post-Treatment Modulation in Tuberculous Lymphadenitis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tropical medicine and infectious disease. - : MDPI AG. - 2414-6366. ; 8:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pro-inflammatory cytokines are potent stimulators of inflammation and immunity and markers of infection severity and bacteriological burden in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Interferons could have both host-protective and detrimental effects on tuberculosis disease. However, their role has not been studied in tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL). Thus, we evaluated the systemic pro-inflammatory (interleukin (IL)-12, IL-23, interferon (IFN)α, and IFNβ) cytokine levels in TBL, latent tuberculosis (LTBI), and healthy control (HC) individuals. In addition, we also measured the baseline (BL) and post-treatment (PT) systemic levels in TBL individuals. We demonstrate that TBL individuals are characterized by increased pro-inflammatory (IL-12, IL-23, IFNα, IFNβ) cytokines when compared to LTBI and HC individuals. We also show that after anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) completion, the systemic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly modulated in TBL individuals. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed IL-23, IFNα, and IFNβ significantly discriminated TBL disease from LTBI and/or HC individuals. Hence, our study demonstrates the altered systemic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and their reversal after ATT, suggesting that they are markers of disease pathogenesis/severity and altered immune regulation in TBL disease.

  • Influence of different stabilizers on the optical and nonlinear optical properties of CdTe nanoparticles
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0030-4018. ; 284:12, s. 2900-2904
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CdTe semiconductor nanocrystals were synthesized with three different stabilizers: Mercaptoacetic Acid (MM), Mercaptopropionic Acid (MPA) and 2-Mercaptoethanol (ME) at pH approximate to 11.2 by wet chemical route using potassium tellurite and cadmium chloride as starting materials. The effect of capping agent on the preparation of these samples was evaluated using UV-Visible absorption and photoluminescence analysis. With the same reaction time but with different stabilizers, nanocrystals of different diameters were obtained. The average full width at half maximum of the photoluminescence spectra was about 69 nm which indicates that the monodispersity was quite good. The particle size was calculated by Debye-Scherrer equation from XRD data. Further characterization studies such as FT-IR and optical nonlinearity studies on the samples were carried out and the results are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Major adverse events and atrial tachycardia in Ebstein's anomaly predicted by cardiovascular magnetic resonance
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Heart (British Cardiac Society). - : BMJ. - 1468-201X .- 1355-6037. ; 104:1, s. 37-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with Ebstein’s anomaly of the tricuspid valve (EA) are at risk of tachyarrhythmia, congestive heart failure and sudden cardiac death. We sought to determine the value of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) for predicting these outcomes.MethodsSeventy-nine consecutive adult patients (aged 37±15 years) with unrepaired EA underwent CMR and were followed prospectively for a median 3.4 (range 0.4–10.9) years for clinical outcomes, namely major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs: sustained ventricular tachycardia/heart failure hospital admission/cardiac transplantation/death) and first-onset atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT).ResultsCMR-derived variables associated with MACE (n=6) were right ventricular (RV) or left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) (HR 2.06, 95% CI 1.168 to 3.623, p=0.012 and HR 2.35, 95% CI 1.348 to 4.082, p=0.003, respectively), LV stroke volume index (HR 2.82, 95% CI 1.212 to 7.092, p=0.028) and cardiac index (HR 1.71, 95% CI 1.002 to 1.366, p=0.037); all remained significant when tested solely for mortality. History of AT (HR 11.16, 95% CI 1.30 to 95.81, p=0.028) and New York Heart Association class >2 (HR 7.66, 95% CI 1.54 to 38.20, p=0.013) were also associated with MACE; AT preceded all but one MACE, suggesting its potential role as an early marker of adverse outcome (p=0.011).CMR variables associated with first-onset AT (n=17; 21.5%) included RVEF (HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.103 to 2.160, p=0.011), total R/L volume index (HR 1.18, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.32, p=0.002), RV/LV end diastolic volume ratio (HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.14 to 2.10, p=0.005) and apical septal leaflet displacement/total LV septal length (HR 1.03, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.07, p=0.041); the latter two combined enhanced risk prediction (HR 6.12, 95% CI 1.67 to 22.56, p=0.007).ConclusionCMR-derived indices carry prognostic information regarding MACE and first-onset AT among adults with unrepaired EA. CMR may be included in the periodic surveillance of these patients.
