  • STATIC! The Aesthetics of Energy in Everyday Things
  • 2007. - 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Design Research Society Wonderground International Conference 2006.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Static! is a project investigating interaction and product design as a way of increasing our awareness of how energy is used in everyday life. Revisiting the design of everyday things with focus on issues related to energy use, we have developed a palette of design examples in the form of prototypes, conceptual design proposals and use scenarios, to be used as a basis for communication and discussion with users and designers. With respect to design research and practice, the aim has been to develop a more profound understanding of energy as material in design, including its expressive and aesthetic potential, thus locating issues related to energy use at the centre of the design process.

  • Survival and growth of saprotrophic and mycorrhizal fungi in recalcitrant amine, amide and ammonium containing media
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 16:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The elimination of hazardous compounds in chemical wastes can be a complex and technically demanding task. In the search for environmental-friendly technologies, fungal mediated remediation and removal procedures are of concern. In this study, we investigated whether there are fungal species that can survive and grow on solely amine-containing compounds. One compound containing a primary amine group; 2-diethylaminoethanol, one compound with a primary amide group; 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM), and a third compound containing a quaternary ammonium group; N-3-trimethyl(2-oxiranyl)methanaminium chloride, were selected. The choice of these compounds was motivated by their excessive use in large scale manufacturing of protein separation media (2-diethylaminoethanol and the quaternary amine). 2,6-dichlorobenzamide, the degradation product of the herbicide 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (dichlobenil), was chosen since it is an extremely recalcitrant compound. Utilising part of the large fungal diversity in Northern European forests, a screening study using 48 fungal isolates from 42 fungal species, including saprotrophic and mycorrhizal fungi, was performed to test for growth responses to the chosen compounds. The ericoid (ERM) mycorrhizal fungus Rhizoscyphus ericae showed the best overall growth on 2-diethylaminoethanol and BAM in the 1-20 g L-1 concentration range, with a 35-fold and 4.5-fold increase in biomass, respectively. For N-3-trimethyl(2-oxiranyl)methanaminium chloride, the peak growth occurred at 1 g L-1. In a second experiment, including three of the most promising fungi (Laccaria laccata, Hygrophorus camarophyllus and Rhizoscyphus ericae) from the screening experiment, a simulated process water containing 1.9% (w/v) 2-diethylaminoethanol and 0.8% (w/v) N(3-)trimethyl(2-oxiranyl)methanaminium chloride was used. Laccaria laccata showed the best biomass increase (380%) relative to a control, while the accumulation for Rhizoscyphus ericae and Hygrophorus camarophyllus were 292% and 136% respectively, indicating that mycorrhizal fungi can use amine- and amide-containing substrates as nutrients. These results show the potential of certain fungal species to be used in alternative green wastewater treatment procedures.

  • Sexuella problem är vanliga vid antidepressiv behandling : Vad vet allmänläkarna om denna biverkan, och hur hanteras den?
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 102:9, s. 650-653
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At least five per cent of the Swedish population is treated with some kind of antidepressant (AD) drug, mostly SSRI's. Sexual adverse effects, mainly loss of libido and anorgasmia or delayed orgasm/ejaculation concern more than 50% of these patients. The antidepressive effects of treatment are generally satisfying, but the sexual side effects may be a reason for non-compliance. This article refers to studies that specifically have investigated sexual adverse effects caused by AD-treatment and strategies to handle and prevent these problems. A questionnaire sent to general practitioners showed that they are well aware of the problem with sexual adverse effect in AD treatment and ascribe it great importance. The knowledge of effects and side effects of newer AD drugs seemed somewhat insufficient. An increased knowledge about these substances and alternative treatment strategies would perhaps make it easier for the physicians to handle or avoid AD induced sexual side effects.

  • Serious Games and E-Learning-Learning Standards : Towards an Integrated Experience
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Distributed Learning Technology (JADLeT). - : Romania Advanced Distributed Learning Partnership Lab. - 2285-1070. ; 1:1, s. 9-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the emergence of e-Learning-Learning systems, researchers have explored methods to increase their efficacy, and support a wider range of pedagogical approaches. Similarly, the concept of using Game Based Learning, taken commonly to refer to the use of digital games for education, has also been the subject of a substantial volume of research into their pedagogical design and impact. The popularisation of Game Based Learning has occurred in parallel with the establishment of E-Learning systems; however, questions remain on both technical and pedagogical levels as to how games can effectively be integrated into e-Learning systems. Games can differ substantially from other educational media when used as learning resources, as they may combine high-fidelity audio and video content and employ experiential, social, or exploratory pedagogies. Observing that games are not commonly designed to be included in E-Learning-Learning systems, and that most E-Learning-Learning standards at present do not specifically include affordances for Game Based Learning, this paper explores recent advances in standardisation of Game Based Learning descriptions, and their integration with ELearning- Learning standards.

  • Lithium Response in Bipolar Disorder is Associated with Focal Adhesion and PI3K-Akt Networks: A Multi-omics Replication Study.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research square.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lithium is the gold standard treatment for bipolar disorder (BD). However, its mechanism of action is incompletely understood, and prediction of treatment outcomes is limited. In our previous multi-omics study of the Pharmacogenomics of Bipolar Disorder (PGBD) sample combining transcriptomic and genomic data, we found that focal adhesion, the extracellular matrix (ECM), and PI3K-Akt signaling networks were associated with response to lithium. In this study, we replicated the results of our previous study using network propagation methods in a genome-wide association study of an independent sample of 2,039 patients from the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLiGen) study. We identified functional enrichment in focal adhesion and PI3K-Akt pathways, but we did not find an association with the ECM pathway. Our results suggest that deficits in the neuronal growth cone and PI3K-Akt signaling, but not in ECM proteins, may influence response to lithium in BD.

  • The Type 2 Diabetes-Associated Gene Ide Is Required for Insulin Secretion and Suppression of alpha-Synuclein Levels in beta-Cells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 62:6, s. 2004-2014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association studies have identified several type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk loci linked to impaired beta-cell function. The identity and function of the causal genes in these susceptibility loci remain, however, elusive. The HHEX/IDE T2D locus is associated with decreased insulin secretion in response to oral glucose stimulation in humans. Here we have assessed beta-cell function in Ide knockout (KO) mice. We find that glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) is decreased in Ide KO mice due to impaired replenishment of the releasable pool of granules and that the Ide gene is haploinsufficient. We also show that autophagic flux and microtubule content are reduced in beta-cells of Ide KO mice. One important cellular role for IDE involves the neutralization of amyloidogenic proteins, and we find that a-synuclein and IDE levels are inversely correlated in beta-cells of Ide KO mice and T2D patients. Moreover, we provide evidence that both gain and loss of function of a-synuclein in beta-cells in vivo impair not only GSIS but also autophagy. Together, these data identify the Ide gene as a regulator of GSIS, suggest a molecular mechanism for beta-cell degeneration as a consequence of Ide deficiency, and corroborate and extend a previously established important role for a-synuclein in beta-cell function.

  • Design of a national patient-centred clinical pathway for sepsis in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Infectious Diseases. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2374-4235 .- 2374-4243. ; 55:10, s. 716-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has adopted a resolution on sepsis and urged member states to develop national processes to improve sepsis care. In Sweden, sepsis was selected as one of the ten first diagnoses to be addressed, when the Swedish government in 2019 allocated funds for patient-centred clinical pathways in healthcare. A national multidisciplinary working group, including a patient representative, was appointed to develop the patient-centred clinical pathway for sepsis.METHODS: The working group mapped challenges and needs surrounding sepsis care and included a survey sent to all emergency departments (ED) in Sweden, and then designed a patient-centred clinical pathway for sepsis.RESULTS: The working group decided to focus on the following four areas: (1) sepsis alert for early detection and management optimisation for the most severely ill sepsis patients in the ED; (2) accurate sepsis diagnosis coding; (3) structured information to patients at discharge after sepsis care and (4) structured telephone follow-up after sepsis care. A health-economic analysis indicated that the implementation of the clinical pathway for sepsis will most likely not drive costs. An important aspect of the clinical pathway is implementing continuous monitoring of performance and process indicators. A national working group is currently building up such a system for monitoring, focusing on extraction of this information from the electronic health records systems.CONCLUSION: A national patient-centred clinical pathway for sepsis has been developed and is currently being implemented in Swedish healthcare. We believe that the clinical pathway and the accompanying monitoring will provide a more efficient and equal sepsis care and improved possibilities to monitor and further develop sepsis care in Sweden.
