  • Bathymetry and deep-water exchange across the central Lomonosov Ridge at 88°-89°N
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Deep-Sea Research I. - : Elsevier BV. ; 54, s. 1197-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seafloor mapping of the central Lomonosov Ridge using a multibeam echo-sounder during the Beringia/Healy–Oden Trans-Arctic Expedition (HOTRAX) 2005 shows that a channel across the ridge has a substantially shallower sill depth than the 2500 m indicated in present bathymetric maps. The multibeam survey along the ridge crest shows a maximum sill depth of about 1870 m. A previously hypothesized exchange of deep water from the Amundsen Basin to the Makarov Basin in this area is not confirmed. On the contrary, evidence of a deep-water flow from the Makarov to the Amundsen Basin was observed, indicating the existence of a new pathway for Canadian Basin Deep Water toward the Atlantic Ocean. Sediment data show extensive current activity along the ridge crest and along the rim of a local Intra Basin within the ridge structure.

  • Late Breaking Abstract - NORdic Database for aSThmA Research (NORDSTAR) : Swedish and Finnish patients
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - : European Respiratory Society. - 0903-1936 .- 1399-3003. ; 52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: A cross-border research collaboration was recently initiated across the Nordic countries. These countries maintain population-based registers containing a variety of patient-level health and socioeconomic variables, providing a basis for nation-wide, longitudinal research.Aims and objectives: Describe key characteristics of Swedish and Finnish asthma populations in 2014.Methods: NORDSTAR is a research platform with ethical approval based on Nordic register data. Patients with an asthma diagnosis (ICD-10: J45/46) at any age in specialist care, or ≥2 dispensed respiratory prescriptions (ATC: R03) while aged 6-44, during 2004-2014 were included. Those with diagnosis and treatment pairs unlikely to be asthma were excluded. Demographics (age, sex, income, education level, and urban residence), treatment, comorbidities, and asthma specialist visits in 2014 were described using summary statistics. Results: Finnish comorbidity levels appeared higher than in Sweden. More Finnish patients filled OCS prescriptions (24%) than Swedish patients (20%). Most Swedish patients lived in an urban setting, and the distribution of education level was similar to the general population. Mean family income was 49,960 and 42,840 EUR in Sweden and Finland respectively, while 31% and 44% of patients visited an asthma specialist. Prevalence of asthma was highest among women in both countries, and age distributions were similar. Conclusions: NORDSTAR is a platform for conducting asthma outcomes research in the Nordics. Swedish and Finnish patients appear to be similar in many dimensions except for prevalence of asthma specialist care contacts.

  • Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a new measles, mumps and rubella vaccine when administered as a second dose at 12 y of age.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 33:7, s. 545-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An open randomized trial involving 301 subjects was conducted in order to compare the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a new measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, SB MMR, with those of a commercial MMR vaccine, Merck MMR, when given as a second dose to children at 11-12 y of age. All subjects had previously received Merck MMR in the first year of life. In initially seronegative subjects, all subjects receiving the Merck MMR vaccine had seroconverted with respect to measles (10/10 subjects), mumps (38/38) and rubella (4/4). Of the subjects receiving SB MMR, 6/7 seroconverted with respect to measles, 29/31 with respect to mumps and 3/3 with respect to rubella. No difference was seen in seroconversion rates or geometric mean values (GMVs) between groups. In initially seropositive subjects, a higher anti-mumps immune response rate was observed in the SB MMR group (59.3%) compared with the Merck MMR group (24.1%). Higher post-vaccination anti-mumps and anti-rubella GMVs were observed in the group receiving SB MMR (p < 0.007), whereas higher anti-measles GMVs were observed in the Merck MMR group (p = 0.0013). There was a lower (p = 0.013) incidence of pain at the injection site in subjects receiving SB MMR (20.1%) compared with Merck MMR (33.3%). Incidences of systemic reactions were similar between groups.

  • Rotavirusinfektion hos barn - svenska data i europeiskt perspektiv : Prospektiv observationsstudie visar belastningen inom sjukvården
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - Stockholm : Sveriges läkarförbund. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 105:16, s. 1181-1185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rotavirus is globally the most common cause of severe acute gastroenteritis in small children. The burden on the Swedish healthcare system is major and earlier preliminary calculations indicate that about 1,500-2,400 children are admitted to hospital each year with rotavirus infections. The present investigation is a prospective observation study which was carried out in seven European countries in the period October 2004 - September 2005. (See also JID 2007; 195:S4-16.) All children <5 years of age living within an identified geographic area who sought medical attention for acute gastroenteritis were eligible for inclusion in the study. In Sweden, the annual incidence of gastroenteritis (regardless of pathogen) was estimated at 4.22 per 100 children under 5 years of age. The corresponding calculated incidence of rotavirus mediated gastroenteritis requiring hospitalisation was 0.77 per 100 children and for emergency consultations 1.37 per 100 children. When estimating the total burden of rotavirus mediated morbidity in Sweden we should calculate with 2,000-3,000 children requiring hospitalisation each year while at least as many will visit paediatric clinics and emergency rooms.

  • An Arctic Ocean ice shelf during MIS 6 constrained by new geophysical and geological data
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 29:25-26, s. 3505-3517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hypothesis of floating ice shelves covering the Arctic Ocean during glacial periods was developed in the 1970s. In its most extreme form, this theory involved a 1000 m thick continuous ice shelf covering the Arctic Ocean during Quaternary glacial maxima including the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). While recent observations clearly demonstrate deep ice grounding events in the central Arctic Ocean, the ice shelf hypothesis has been difficult to evaluate due to a lack of information from key areas with severe sea ice conditions. Here we present new data from previously inaccessible, unmapped areas that constrain the spatial extent and timing of marine ice sheets during past glacials. These data include multibeam swath bathymetry and subbottom profiles portraying glaciogenic features on the Chukchi Borderland, southern Lomonosov Ridge north of Greenland, Morris Jesup Rise, and Yermak Plateau. Sediment cores from the mapped areas provide age constraints on the glaciogenic features. Combining these new geophysical and geological data with earlier results suggests that an especially extensive marine ice sheet complex, including an ice shelf, existed in the Amerasian Arctic Ocean during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. From a conceptual oceanographic model we speculate that the cold halocline of the Polar Surface Water may have extended to deeper water depths during MIS 6 inhibiting the warm Atlantic water from reaching the Amerasian Arctic Ocean and, thus, creating favorable conditions for ice shelf development. The hypothesis of a continuous 1000 m thick ice shelf is rejected because our mapping results show that several areas in the central Arctic Ocean substantially shallower than 1000 m water depth are free from glacial influence on the seafloor.

  • Evidence for an ice shelf covering the central Arctic Ocean during the penultimate glaciation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hypothesis of a km-thick ice shelf covering the entire Arctic Ocean during peak glacial conditions was proposed nearly half a century ago. Floating ice shelves preserve few direct traces after their disappearance, making reconstructions difficult. Seafloor imprints of ice shelves should, however, exist where ice grounded along their flow paths. Here we present new evidence of ice-shelf groundings on bathymetric highs in the central Arctic Ocean, resurrecting the concept of an ice shelf extending over the entire central Arctic Ocean during at least one previous ice age. New and previously mapped glacial landforms together reveal flow of a spatially coherent, in some regions41-km thick, central Arctic Ocean ice shelf dated to marine isotope stage 6 (similar to 140 ka). Bathymetric highs were likely critical in the ice-shelf development by acting as pinning points where stabilizing ice rises formed, thereby providing sufficient back stress to allow ice shelf thickening.

  • Post-glacial flooding of the Bering Land Bridge dated to 11 cal ka BP based on new geophysical and sediment records
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Climate of the Past. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1814-9324 .- 1814-9332. ; 13:8, s. 991-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Bering Strait connects the Arctic and Pacific oceans and separates the North American and Asian landmasses. The presently shallow (similar to 53 m) strait was exposed during the sea level lowstand of the last glacial period, which permitted human migration across a land bridge today referred to as the Bering Land Bridge. Proxy studies (stable isotope composition of foraminifera, whale migration into the Arctic Ocean, mollusc and insect fossils and paleobotanical data) have suggested a range of ages for the Bering Strait reopening, mainly falling within the Younger Dryas stadial (12.9-11.7 cal ka BP). Here we provide new information on the deglacial and post-glacial evolution of the Arctic-Pacific connection through the Bering Strait based on analyses of geological and geophysical data from Herald Canyon, located north of the Bering Strait on the Chukchi Sea shelf region in the western Arctic Ocean. Our results suggest an initial opening at about 11 cal ka BP in the earliest Holocene, which is later than in several previous studies. Our key evidence is based on a well-dated core from Herald Canyon, in which a shift from a near-shore environment to a Pacific-influenced open marine setting at around 11 cal ka BP is observed. The shift corresponds to meltwater pulse 1b (MWP1b) and is interpreted to signify relatively rapid breaching of the Bering Strait and the submergence of the large Bering Land Bridge. Although the precise rates of sea level rise cannot be quantified, our new results suggest that the late deglacial sea level rise was rapid and occurred after the end of the Younger Dryas stadial.

  • (32)P-HPLC analysis of N1-(2-carboxy-2-hydroxyethyl)deoxyadenosine : A DNA adduct of the acrylamide-derived epoxide glycidamide
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Toxicology Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-4274 .- 1879-3169. ; 207:1, s. 18-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acrylamide (AA) is produced in many types of food products cooked or processed at high temperature. AA is metabolized to the epoxide glycidamide (GA), which can bind to deoxyguanosine and deoxyadenosine in DNA. The GA-derived N7-guanine and N3-adenine adducts are the only products which so far have been analysed in vivo. Because of previous excellent experience from analysis of adducts to N1-adenine, the aim of our study was to investigate if the N1-adenine adduct of GA could be used as a biomarker of AA exposure. A (32)P-postlabelling method was developed and tested (a) on DNA modified in vitro with GA, (b) on cells treated with GA and (c) on liver DNA from mice treated with M. The N1-adenine adduct of GA (analysed after conversion to N(6)-GA-deoxyadenosine-5'-monophosphate) was easily detected in DNA reacted with GA and in DNA from cells exposed to GA, but not in DNA from mice treated with AA. The reason for this is currently not clearly understood, but some of the possible contributing factors are discussed. The application of the method in other experimental conditions should be further pursued in order to solve this matter.

  • HIMMELI v1.0 : HelsinkI Model of MEthane buiLd-up and emIssion for peatlands
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geoscientific Model Development. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1991-959X .- 1991-9603. ; 10:12, s. 4665-4691
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wetlands are one of the most significant natural sources of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. They emit CH4 because decomposition of soil organic matter in waterlogged anoxic conditions produces CH4, in addition to carbon dioxide (CO2). Production of CH4 and how much of it escapes to the atmosphere depend on a multitude of environmental drivers. Models simulating the processes leading to CH4 emissions are thus needed for upscaling observations to estimate present CH4 emissions and for producing scenarios of future atmospheric CH4 concentrations. Aiming at a CH4 model that can be added to models describing peatland carbon cycling, we composed a model called HIMMELI that describes CH4 build-up in and emissions from peatland soils. It is not a full peatland carbon cycle model but it requires the rate of anoxic soil respiration as input. Driven by soil temperature, leaf area index (LAI) of aerenchymatous peatland vegetation, and water table depth (WTD), it simulates the concentrations and transport of CH4, CO2, and oxygen (O2) in a layered one-dimensional peat column. Here, we present the HIMMELI model structure and results of tests on the model sensitivity to the input data and to the description of the peat column (peat depth and layer thickness), and demonstrate that HIMMELI outputs realistic fluxes by comparing modeled and measured fluxes at two peatland sites. As HIMMELI describes only the CH4-related processes, not the full carbon cycle, our analysis revealed mechanisms and dependencies that may remain hidden when testing CH4 models connected to complete peatland carbon models, which is usually the case. Our results indicated that (1) the model is flexible and robust and thus suitable for different environments; (2) the simulated CH4 emissions largely depend on the prescribed rate of anoxic respiration; (3) the sensitivity of the total CH4 emission to other input variables is mainly mediated via the concentrations of dissolved gases, in particular, the O2 concentrations that affect the CH4 production and oxidation rates; (4) with given input respiration, the peat column description does not significantly affect the simulated CH4 emissions in this model version.

  • Methane budget estimates in Finland from the CarbonTracker Europe-CH4 data assimilation system
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tellus. Series B: Chemical and Physical Meteorology. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1600-0889 .- 0280-6509. ; 71:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We estimated the CH4 budget in Finland for 2004–2014 using the CTE-CH4 data assimilation system with an extended atmospheric CH4 observation network of seven sites from Finland to surrounding regions (Hyytiälä, Kjølnes, Kumpula, Pallas, Puijo, Sodankylä, and Utö). The estimated average annual total emission for Finland is 0.6 ± 0.5 Tg CH4 yr−1. Sensitivity experiments show that the posterior biospheric emission estimates for Finland are between 0.3 and 0.9 Tg CH4 yr−1, which lies between the LPX-Bern-DYPTOP (0.2 Tg CH4 yr−1) and LPJG-WHyMe (2.2 Tg CH4 yr−1) process-based model estimates. For anthropogenic emissions, we found that the EDGAR v4.2 FT2010 inventory (0.4 Tg CH4 yr−1) is likely to overestimate emissions in southernmost Finland, but the extent of overestimation and possible relocation of emissions are difficult to derive from the current observation network. The posterior emission estimates were especially reliant on prior information in central Finland. However, based on analysis of posterior atmospheric CH4, we found that the anthropogenic emission distribution based on a national inventory is more reliable than the one based on EDGAR v4.2 FT2010. The contribution of total emissions in Finland to global total emissions is only about 0.13%, and the derived total emissions in Finland showed no trend during 2004–2014. The model using optimized emissions was able to reproduce observed atmospheric CH4 at the sites in Finland and surrounding regions fairly well (correlation > 0.75, bias < ± ppb), supporting adequacy of the observations to be used in atmospheric inversion studies. In addition to global budget estimates, we found that CTE-CH4 is also applicable for regional budget estimates, where small scale (1x1 in this case) optimization is possible with a dense observation network.
