  • The Seventh Visual Object Tracking VOT2019 Challenge Results
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE/CVF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION WORKSHOPS (ICCVW). - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 9781728150239 ; , s. 2206-2241
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for pi(0) production at midrapidity in p plus p collisions at root s=510 GeV
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 93:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry (A(LL)) in inclusive pi(0) production at midrapidity from p + p collisions at root s = 510 GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The pi(0)A(LL) results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with p(T) and root s with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on pi(0) and jet A(LL) and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton Delta G for the gluon momentum fraction range x > 0.05. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to x similar to 0.01, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of Delta G.

  • Nuclear matter effects on J/psi production in asymmetric Cu plus Au collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 90:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on J/psi production from asymmetric Cu + Au heavy-ion collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of J/psi yields in Cu + Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that inAu + Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, J/psi production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-x gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus.

  • Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Autophagy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1554-8635 .- 1554-8627. ; 8:4, s. 445-544
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to measure autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. A key point that needs to be emphasized is that there is a difference between measurements that monitor the numbers or volume of autophagic elements (e.g., autophagosomes or autolysosomes) at any stage of the autophagic process vs. those that measure flux through the autophagy pathway (i.e., the complete process); thus, a block in macroautophagy that results in autophagosome accumulation needs to be differentiated from stimuli that result in increased autophagic activity, defined as increased autophagy induction coupled with increased delivery to, and degradation within, lysosomes (in most higher eukaryotes and some protists such as Dictyostelium) or the vacuole (in plants and fungi). In other words, it is especially important that investigators new to the field understand that the appearance of more autophagosomes does not necessarily equate with more autophagy. In fact, in many cases, autophagosomes accumulate because of a block in trafficking to lysosomes without a concomitant change in autophagosome biogenesis, whereas an increase in autolysosomes may reflect a reduction in degradative activity. Here, we present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a formulaic set of rules, because the appropriate assays depend in part on the question being asked and the system being used. In addition, we emphasize that no individual assay is guaranteed to be the most appropriate one in every situation, and we strongly recommend the use of multiple assays to monitor autophagy. In these guidelines, we consider these various methods of assessing autophagy and what information can, or cannot, be obtained from them. Finally, by discussing the merits and limits of particular autophagy assays, we hope to encourage technical innovation in the field.

  • Ablation of ERO1A induces lethal endoplasmic reticulum stress responses and immunogenic cell death to activate anti-tumor immunity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports Medicine. - : Cell Press. - 2666-3791. ; 4:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Immunophenotyping of the tumor microenvironment (TME) is essential for enhancing immunotherapy effi-cacy. However, strategies for characterizing the TME exhibit significant heterogeneity. Here, we show that endoplasmic reticular oxidoreductase-1a (ERO1A) mediates an immune-suppressive TME and attenuates the response to PD-1 blockade. Ablation of ERO1A in tumor cells substantially incites anti-tumor T cell im-munity and promotes the efficacy of aPD-1 in therapeutic models. Single-cell RNA-sequencing analyses confirm that ERO1A correlates with immunosuppression and dysfunction of CD8+ T cells along anti-PD-1 treatment. In human lung cancer, high ERO1A expression is associated with a higher risk of recurrence following neoadjuvant immunotherapy. Mechanistically, ERO1A ablation impairs the balance between IRE1a and PERK signaling activities and induces lethal unfolded protein responses in tumor cells undergoing endoplasmic reticulum stress, thereby enhancing anti-tumor immunity via immunogenic cell death. These findings reveal how tumor ERO1A induces immunosuppression, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target for cancer immunotherapy.

  • Dynamic toxicity landscape of immunotherapy for solid tumors across treatment lines
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the National Cancer Center. - : Elsevier. - 2667-0054. ; 3:3, s. 186-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting programmed cell death-1/ligand-1 (PD-1/PD-L1), cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), and lymphocyte-activation gene-3 (LAG-3) have been widely studied and applied throughout the course of cancer treatment. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive profile of ICI-associated toxicity and elucidate the toxicity patterns of ICIs across different treatment lines. Methods: In total, 155 cohorts comprising 24 539 eligible patients were included in the safety analysis. Trial name, registration number, cancer type, trial phase, clinical setting, trial design, regimen, dosing schedule, age, sex and ethnicity distributions, number of patients, number of treatment-related adverse events (trAEs), and number of treatment-related death were extracted. We defined a timeline from the neoadjuvant setting to the third-line setting. We also introduced a synthesizing principle for adverse event rates (SPAER) of immunotherapy to ensure the comparability and reliability across different treatment lines. The study protocol was registered and approved by the PROSPERO protocol review committee (CRD42021242368). Results: After excluding the neoadjuvant setting group, we observed a distinct reduction in the incidence of treatment-related adverse events (trAEs) with an advancement of the line of ICI treatment. The incidence of trAEs was negatively correlated with the line of treatment, irrespective of whether monotherapy or dual-ICI combination therapy was administered. Sensitivity analyses also confirmed the coincident negative correlations. Conclusion: In summary, using a timeline-based concept centered around treatment lines, we revealed the dynamic landscape of ICI-associated toxicity and found that patients treated with ICIs during later lines of therapy may have a lower risk of trAEs.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:5, s. 052001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform an analysis of the D+ -> K-S(0)pi + (0)(pi) Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collisions at the (3770) mass accumulated by the BESIII experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well represented by a combination of six quasitwo- body decay channels [k(SP)(0)(+) (1450)(+,) ] plus a small nonresonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:7, s. 074030-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using (106.41 +/- 0.86) x 10(6) Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we study for the first time the decay chi(cJ) -> eta'K+K- (J = 1, 2), where eta' -> gamma rho(0) and eta' -> eta pi(+)pi(-). A partial wave analysis in the covariant tensor amplitude formalism is performed for the decay chi(c1) -> eta'K+K-. Intermediate processes chi(c1) -> eta'f(2)'(1525) chi(c1) -> K-0*(1430)K-+/-(-/+) (K-0*(1430)(+/-) -> eta'K-+/-) are observed with statistical significances larger than 5 sigma, and their branching fractions are measured.

  • Measurement of the branching fraction for psi(3686) -> omega K+K-
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:11, s. 112006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With 1.06 x 10(8) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of psi(3686) -> omega K+K- is measured to be (1.54 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.11) x 10(-4). This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest psi(3686) sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of J/psi -> omega K+K-, the ratio B(psi(3868) -> K+K-)/B(J/psi -> K+K-) is determined to be (18.4 +/- 3.7)%. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the 12% rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the J/psi branching fraction.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:9, s. 092001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.420 GeV, the process e(+)e(-) -> gamma X(3872) is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 6.3 sigma. The measured mass of the X(3872) is (3871.9 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 0.2(syst)) MeV/c(2), in agreement with previous measurements. Measurements of the product of the cross section sigma[e(+)e(-) -> gamma X(3872)] and the branching fraction B [X(3872) -> pi(+)pi(-)J/psi] at center-of-mass energies 4.009, 4.229, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV are reported. Our measurements are consistent with expectations for the radiative transition process Y(4260) -> gamma X(3872).

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 113:21, s. 212002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider at center-of-mass energies of root s = 4.23, 4.26, and 4.36 GeV, we observe e(+)e(-) -> pi(0)pi(0)h(c) for the first time. The Born cross sections are measured and found to be about half of those of e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)h(c) within less than 2 sigma. In the pi(0)h(c) mass spectrum, a structure at 4.02 GeV/c(2) is found. It is most likely to be the neutral isospin partner of the Z(c)(4020)(+/-) observed in the process of e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)h(c) being found. A fit to the pi(0)h(c) invariant mass spectrum, with the width of the Z(c)(4020)(0) fixed to that of its charged isospin partner and possible interferences with non-Z(c)(4020)(0) amplitudes neglected, gives a mass of (4023.9 +/- 2.2 +/- 3.8) MeV/c(2) for the Z(c)(4020)(0), where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using 2.25 x 10(8) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings, we observe for the first time the process J/psi -> p (p) over bara(0)(980) -> pi(0)eta with a significance of 6.5 sigma (3.2 sigma including systematic uncertainties). The product branching fraction of J/psi -> p (p) over bara(0)(980) -> p (p) over bara(0)pi(0)eta is measured to be (6.8 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.3) x 10(-5), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement provides information on the a(0) production near threshold coupling to p (p) over bar and improves the understanding of the dynamics of J/psi decays to four-body processes.

This analysis is based on t pair decays to ee, e mu, eh, h, hh, e.,. and p. final states, where h denotes a charged p or K. The mass of the t lepton is measured from a maximum likelihood fit to the t pair production cross- section data to be m(tau) = 1776.91 +/- 0.12_0.10 - 0.13 _ MeV/c(2), which is currently the most precise value in a single measurement.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process e(+)e(-) -> p (p) over bar pi(0) has been studied by analyzing data collected at root s = 3.773 GeV, root s = 3.650 GeV, and during a psi(3770) line shape scan with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section of p (p) over bar pi(0) in the vicinity of the psi(3770) is measured, and the Born cross section of psi(3770) -> p (p) over bar pi(0) is extracted considering interference between resonant and continuum production amplitudes. Two solutions with the same probability and a significance of 1.5 sigma are found. The solutions for the Born cross section of psi(3770) -> p (p) over bar pi(0) are 33.8 +/- 1.8 +/- 2.1 pb and 0.06(-0.04-0.01)(+0.10+0.01) pb (< 0.22 pb at a 90% confidence level). Using the estimated cross section and a constant decay amplitude approximation, the cross section sigma(p<(p)over bar> -> psi(3770)pi(0)) is calculated for the kinematic situation of the planned (p) over bar ANDA experiment. The maximum cross section corresponding to the two solutions is expected to be less than 0.79 nb at 90% confidence level and 122 +/- 10 nb at a center-of-mass energy of 5.26 GeV.

  • Cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry of eta mesons in p up arrow plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV at forward rapidity

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 90:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry (AN) for. mesons at large pseudorapidity from root s = 200 GeV p up arrow + p collisions. The measured cross section for 0.5 < p(T) < 5.0 GeV/c and 3.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3.8 is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries A(N) have been measured as a function of Feynman-x (x(F)) from 0.2 < vertical bar x(F)vertical bar < 0.7, as well as transverse momentum (p(T)) from 1.0 < p(T) < 4.5 GeV/c. The asymmetry averaged over positive x(F) is < A(N)> = 0.061 +/- 0.014. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward eta and pi(0) mesons at various energies in overlapping x(F) ranges. Comparison of different particle species can help to determine the origin of the large observed asymmetries in p up arrow + p collisions.

    • The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson ,omega, rho, and phi, production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The differential cross sections for these mesons are measured as a function of both p(T) and rapidity. We also report the integrated differential cross sections over 1 < p(T) < 7 GeV/c and 1.2 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.2: d sigma/dy(omega + rho rho -> mu mu) = 80 +/- 6(stat) +/- 12(syst)nb and d sigma/dy(phi -> mu mu) = 27 +/- 3(stat) +/- 4(syst)nb. These results are compared with midrapidity measurements and calculations.

  • Measurement of K-S(0) and K*(0) in p plus p, d plus Au, and Cu plus Cu collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 90:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has performed a systematic study of K-S(0) and K*(0) meson production at midrapidity in p + p, d + Au, and Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The K-S(0) and K*(0) mesons are reconstructed via their K-S(0) -> pi(0)(-> gamma gamma) pi(0)(-> gamma gamma) and K*(0) -> K-+/-pi(-/+) decay modes, respectively. The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to determine the nuclear modification factor of K-S(0) and K*(0) mesons in d + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at different centralities. In the d + Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor of K-S(0) and K*(0) mesons is almost constant as a function of transverse momentum and is consistent with unity, showing that cold-nuclear-matter effects do not play a significant role in the measured kinematic range. In Cu + Cu collisions, within the uncertainties no nuclear modification is registered in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, both mesons show suppression relative to the expectations from the p + p yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in the Cu + Cu system. In the p(T) range 2-5 GeV/c, the strange mesons (K-S(0), K*(0)) similarly to the phi meson with hidden strangeness, showan intermediate suppression between the more suppressed light quark mesons (pi(0)) and the nonsuppressed baryons (p, (p) over bar). At higher transverse momentum, p(T) > 5 GeV/c, production of all particles is similarly suppressed by a factor of approximate to 2.

  • Measurements of Elliptic and Triangular Flow in High-Multiplicity He-3 + Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 115:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first measurement of elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow in high-multiplicity He-3 + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in He-3 + Au and in p + p collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the He-3 + Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The v(2) values are comparable to those previously measured in d + Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparisons with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three He-3 nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX Collaboration has measured phi meson production in d + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The phi meson is measured in the forward (backward) d-going (Au-going) direction, 1.2 < y < 2.2 (-2.2 < y < -1.2) in the transverse-momentum (pT) range from 1-7 GeV/c and at midrapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 in the p(T) range below 7 GeV/c. The phi meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of p(T), rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of phi meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the d-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. Similar behavior was previously observed for inclusive charged hadrons and open heavy flavor, indicating similar cold-nuclear-matter effects.

  • Search for dark photons from neutral meson decays in p plus p and d plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 91:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g - 2)mu deviates from SM calculations by 3.6 sigma. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, U, in pi(0), eta -> gamma e(+)e(-) decays and obtained upper limits of O(2 x 10(-6)) on U-gamma mixing at 90% C.L. for the mass range 30 < m(U) < 90 MeV/c(2). Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the U-gamma mixing parameter space that can explain the (g - 2)(mu) deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of 29 < m(U) < 32 MeV/c(2) remaining.

  • Systematic study of charged-pion and kaon femtoscopy in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 92:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a systematic study of charged-pion and kaon interferometry in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The kaon mean source radii are found to be larger than pion radii in the outward and longitudinal directions for the same transverse mass; this difference increases for more central collisions. The azimuthal-angle dependence of the radii was measured with respect to the second-order event plane and similar oscillations of the source radii were found for pions and kaons. Hydrodynamic models qualitatively describe the similar oscillations of the mean source radii for pions and kaons, but they do not fully describe the transverse-mass dependence of the oscillations.

  • D35-TiO2 nano-crystalline film as a high performance visible-light photocatalyst towards the degradation of bis-phenol A
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 355, s. 999-1010
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dye-sensitized photocatalytic suspension system for wastewater treatment is still limited in practice due to particle aggregation, fast charge carrier recombination, poor stability and recycling issue. In this study, we combine TiO2 nano-crystalline film with D35 organic dye to fabricate a new visible-light photocatalyst D35-TiO2, which exhibits excellent visible light absorption. Its transient photocurrent is almost 10 times higher than pure TiO2 under visible light illumination (lambda > 420 nm). Besides the well characterizations of the D35-TiO2 film, e.g., SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, UV-Vis DRS, XPS, PL and I-T, degradation of bis-phenol A (BPA) is performed as the model reaction to test its photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, we employ external bias in the reaction system to further enhance the photogenerated charge carrier separation, and improve the photocatalytic efficiency. Under the better experimental conditions of initial BPA concentration (5 mg/L), initial pH (pH 7), external bias (0.25 V) and sensitizer concentration (0.1 mM), BPA is almost completely degraded in 300 min, and the four intermediates are gradually mineralized. The ecotoxicity of BPA also decreases significantly after the photo-degradation. During the reaction, center dot O-2(-) plays a dominant role, meanwhile center dot OH and h(D35)(+) also contribute to the BPA degradation. After five cycles, the D35-TiO2 film still maintain the normal photocatalytic activity. Due to the high stability and recyclability, the D35-TiO2 nano-crystalline film provides a sustainable way for degrading micropollutants in wastewater.

  • Modulation of experimental T cell autoimmunity in the nervous system with emphasis on nasal tolerance
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN) and encephalomyelitis (EAE) are animal models of Guillian-Barre syndrome (GBS) and multiple sclerosis (MS), representing human demyelinating diseases of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS), respectively. CD4+ T cells recognizing myelin antigens and producing cytokines play central roles in the pathogenesis of both EAN and EAE and perhaps of GBS and MS. Current treatments of GBS and MS lack specificity and have significant adverse effects, imposing limits on their use. More selective or specific immunotherapies are searched for. In this study, we tested different therapeutic strategies in EAN and EAE. Subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of IL-10, a major Th2 cytokine, delayed onset, shortened duration and suppressed severity of clinical EAN. PNS myelin antigen P2 protein-reactive IFN-r secreting as well as IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-1ß and IL-6 but not IL-4mRNA expressing lymph node cells were reduced by IL-10 treatment compared to untreated control EAN rats, consistent with a down-regulation of P2 specific Thl responses in IL-10 treated rats. S.c. injection of Linomide (LS-2616, quinoline-3-carboxamide) prevented onset and suppressed ongoing EAN. Macrophages from EAN rats exposed to Linomide in vitro and in vivo showed reduced IFN-gamma- and lipopolysacchande (LPS)-induced IL-1ß,TNF-alpha and IL-6 mRNA expression and reduced LPS-induced nitric oxide production by macrophages. Linomide, however, did not affect macrophage death and release of lactate dehydrogenase. Pretreatment with bovine myelin basic protein (MBP) by the nasal route dose-dependently prevented the development of actively induced protracted-relapsing EAE in DA rats. This protection was associated with reduced numbers of MBP-reactive IFN-gamma secreting Thl like splenocytes, decreased levels of anti-MBP IgG2b but elevated IgG1 antibody levels in serum. Nasal pretreatment with MBP also reduced numbers of MBP-reactiveTNF-alpha mRNA expressing cells both in CNS and spleen, while numbers of IL-4 and/orTGF-ß mRNA expressing cells were augmented. However, when the same or a higher dose of MBP was administered nasally to treat ongoing EAE, the severity of the acute phase of disease was enhanced, in conjunction with augmented levels of MBP-reactiveIFN-gamma secreting Thl-like splenocytes. Actively induced EAE in Lewis rats with guinea pig (gp) MBP was also prevented by pretreatment nasally with gp-MBP or the encephalitogenic gp-MBP peptides 68-86+ 87-99, but not with bovine MBP or a non-encephalitogenic gp-MBP peptide 110-128.Lymph node cells from the protected rats showed reduced proliferation, reduced numbers of MBP-reactive IFN-r secreting, and IFN-gamma and/or TNF-alpha mRNA expressing cells. Splenocytes from rats pretreated with a very low dose of gp-MBP but not high dose of gp-MBP or its peptides tolerized rats transferred protection of EAE. Lymph node cells from low dose gp-MBP-tolerized rats had much higher numbers of MBP-reactiveIL-4 mRNA expressing cells compared with control rats or rats tolerized with highdose gp-MBP or its encephalitogenic peptides. We conclude that (1) s.c. injection of IL-10 can suppress clinical EAN. This suppression is associated with down-regulation of Thl responses and macrophage functions, and upregulated Th2 responses. (2) Linomide suppresses clinical EAN and may exert its actions in EAN by suppressing certain macrophage functions. (3) Nasal administration of small amounts of antigens is a highly efficient approach in inducing clinically relevant tolerance. The mechanisms of nasal tolerance are either anergy/deletion of antigen-specific T cells or induction of IL-4 and/or TGF-ß related regulatory mechanisms depending on the property and dosage of antigens administered. Immunotherapy via induction of nasal tolerance could be complicated by the differential tolerogenic effects of antigens and the fact that transient activation of T cells may precede nasal tolerance induction. Only those antigens or peptides with high efficacy in inducing nasal tolerance and activating regulatory elements without inducing further activation of autoreactive T cells are candidates for future clinical use.

  • A Fast Multi-Grid Method for 3-D Turbulent Incompressible Flows
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow. - : Emerald. - 1758-6585 .- 0961-5539. ; 2:2, s. 127-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The averaged Navier‐Stokes and the k‐e turbulence model equations are used to simulate turbulent flows in some internal flow cases. The discrete equations are solved by different variations of Multigrid methods. These include both steady state as well as time dependent solvers. Locally refined grids can be added dynamically in all cases. The Multigrid schemes result in fast convergence rates, whereas local grid refinements allow improved accuracy with rational increase in problem size. The applications of the solver to a 3‐D (cold) furnace model and to the simulation of the flow in a wind tunnel past an object prove the efficiency of the Multigrid scheme with local grid refinement.

  • Laminar flamelet structure at low and vanishing scalar dissipation rate
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Combustion and Flame. - 0010-2180 .- 1556-2921. ; 120:3, s. 285-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The laminar flamelet structures of methane/air, propane/air, and hydrogen/air nonpremixed combustion at low and vanishing scalar dissipation rates are investigated, by numerical calculations of a system of conservation equations in a counterflow diffusion flame configuration, together with a transport equation defining the mixture fraction and scalar dissipation rate. The chemical reaction mechanisms consist of 82 elementary reactions up to C-3 species. In the limit of vanishing scalar dissipation rate, two types of structures are shown to appear. In one structure fuel and oxygen are consumed in a thin layer located near the stoichiometric mixture fraction, Z(st), where the temperature and the major products reach their peaks. This is similar to the so-called Burke-Schumann single layer flame sheet structure. One example is the hydrogen/air diffusion flame. The second structure consists of multilayers. Fuel and oxygen are consumed at different locations. Oxygen is consumed at Z(l) (near Z(st)), where the temperature and the major products reach their peaks. Fuel is consumed at Z(r) (> Z(st)). Between Z(l) and Z(r) some intermediate and radical species are found in high concentrations. Hydrocarbon/air nonpremixed flames are of this type. It is shown that for methane/air diffusion flames, some chemical reactions which are negligible at large scalar dissipation rate near flame quenching conditions, play essential roles for the existence of the multilayer structure. Examples of such reactions are, CH4 --> CH3 + H, H2O + O-2 --> HO2 + OH, H2O + M --> H + OH + M and CHO + H-2 --> O + H. The sensitivity of the species distributions in the flamelet to the scalar dissipation rate varies for different species. The most sensitive species are the intermediates and radicals at the fuel-rich side. At low scalar dissipation rate the radiative heat transfer can significantly move the fuel consumption layer to the oxygen consumption layer, increase the oxygen leakage to fuel side, and even quench the flame. Differential diffusion modifies the species and temperature profiles in the flamelet, but does not affect the multilayer nature of the flamelet. This result is used to successfully explain the high CO emissions in a turbulent methane/air diffusion flame.
