    • This paper presents a new approach for fingerprint enhancement by using directional filters and binarization. A straightforward method for automatically tuning the size of local area is obtained by analyzing entire fingerprint image in the frequency domain. Hence, the algorithm will adjust adaptively to the local area of the fingerprint image, independent on the characteristics of the fingerprint sensor or the physical appearance of the fingerprints. Frequency analysis is carried out in the local areas to design directional filters. Experimental results are presented.

  • Improved Adaptive Fingerprint Binarization

    • In this paper improvements to a previous work are presented. Removing the redundant artifacts in the fingerprint mask is introduced enhancing the final result. The proposed method is entirely adaptive process adjusting to each fingerprint without any further supervision of the user. Hence, the algorithm is insensitive to the characteristics of the fingerprint sensor and the various physical appearances of the fingerprints. Further, a detailed description of fingerprint mask generation not fully described in the previous work is presented. The improved experimental results are presented.

  • Neural Network based Minutiae Extraction from Skeletonized Fingerprints

    • Human fingerprints are rich in details denoted minutiae. In this paper a method of minutiae extraction from fingerprint skeletons is described. To identify the different shapes and types of minutiae a neural network is trained to work as a classifier. The proposed neural network is applied throughout the fingerprint skeleton to locate various minutiae. A scheme to speed up the process is also presented. Extracted minutiae can then be used as identification marks for automatic fingerprint matching.

  • A novel methodology for the interoperability evaluation of an iris segmentation algorithm

    • The performance of an iris recognition system depends greatly on how well the iris segmentation part of the system performs its task. The performance of an iris segmentation algorithm can be evaluated using different criteria and methods. Some of the methods evaluate the performance of the segmentation algorithm based on the performance of the whole iris recognition system. Other methods evaluate the performance of an iris segmentation subsystem independent of the performance of the system's other subsystems. To our knowledge there do not exist a generally accepted method or criteria for the evaluation of the standalone iris segmentation subsystem. This paper proposes a novel methodology to compare the performance of different iris segmentation algorithms, applied to different image datasets in a consistent way. The methodology employs the F1 score and an empirical cumulative distribution function. The implementation of the F1 score estimation, adapted to the iris segmentation task is described. Finally the application of the proposed methodology is demonstrated and discussed.

  • Automatic estimation of a scale resolution in forensic images

    • This paper proposes a new method for an automatic detection of a resolution of a scale or a ruler with graduation marks in the shoeprint images. The method creates a vector of the correlations estimated from the co-occurrence matrices for every row in a shoeprint image. The scale resolution is estimated from maxima in Fourier spectrum of the correlations’ vectors. The proposed method is evaluated on over 500 images taken at crime scenes and in a forensics laboratory. The experimental results indicate the possibility of applying the proposed method to automatically estimate the scale resolution in forensic images. The automatic detection of a scale resolution could be used to automatically rescale a forensic image before the printing this image in “one-to-one” scale. Furthermore, the proposed method could be used to automatically rescale images to an equal scale thus allowing to compare the images digitally.

  • An Instructional Electronics Laboratory Opened for Remote Operation and Control

    • Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden has opened a local instructional laboratory for undergraduate education in electrical and electronic engineering for remote operation and control 24/7 as a complement and a supplement to traditional laboratories. It is equipped with a unique virtual interface enabling students to recognize on their own computer screen the desktop instruments and the breadboard most of them have already used in the local laboratory. The open laboratory is used in regular courses in circuit analysis for distant learning students dispersed all over Sweden and for campus students as well. The research is focused on what is perceived to be the greatest challenge, to give students laboratory experience that is as genuine as possible despite the lack of direct contact with the actual lab hardware. The goal is to produce an open international standard in cooperation with universities and other organizations around the world.

A unique interface gives them the feeling of “being there.” The platform software is published under a GPL license, and other universities, schools, et cetera, are invited use it to open their laboratories and to participate in further research and development. Apart from BTH, five universities in Europe have set up VISIR online laboratories for electrical experiments and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in India will set up one soon. A VISIR community has been established. Common projects are initiated, and the sharing of learning material is being discussed. This chapter is a general introduction to VISIR and its possibilities.

  • Telemanipulator for Remote Wiring of Electrical Circuits

    • Nowadays, students want extended access to learning resources and increased freedom to organize their learning activities. Remote access to laboratories enables students to perform physical experiments on their own 24/7. It is easy to control most electronic instruments remotely but some kind of telemanipulator is often required. The Signal Processing Department (ASB) at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) has created an online lab workbench for electrical experiments, mimicking and supplementing workbenches in local laboratories. Students being at home can, for example, use the online workbench in order to prepare themselves for supervised lab sessions and/or participate in such sessions taking place in a local laboratory. A virtual breadboard is used to control a telemanipulator (switching matrix) performing the circuit wiring. Together with virtual front panels depicting the front panels of the desktop instruments, it gives distant students the impression that they are working in a real laboratory. This paper describes the virtual breadboard and switching matrix combination, which can be used in many switching applications.

    • High quality noise and vibration measurements outside of a laboratory environment on real life structures and applications are not trivial. True boundary and operating conditions enforce unique challenges on the measurements. Measurements in hazardous situations such as high magnetic fields, and high temperature environments, etc., where ordinary measurement equipment and methods may not be employed, require further precautions. Post measurements objectives such as analysis, design and strategic decisions, e.g., control, rely heavily on the quality and integrity of the measurements (data).The quality of the experimental data is highly correlated with the on-field expertise. Practical or hands-on experience with measurements can be imparted to prospective students, researchers and technicians in the form of laboratory experiments involving real equipment and practical applications. However, achieving expertise in the field of sound and vibration measurements in general and their active control in particular is a time consuming and expensive process. Consequently most institutions can only afford a single setup, resulting in the compromise of the quality of expertise.In this thesis, the challenges in the field of sound and vibration measurements in high magnetic field are addressed. The analysis and measurement of vibration transferred from an operational magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to adjacent floors is taken as an example. Improvised experimental measurement methods and custom-made frequency analysis techniques are proposed in order to address the challenges and study the vibration transfer. The methods may be extended to other operational industrial machinery and hazardous environments. To encourage and develop expertise in the field of acoustic/vibration measurements and active noise control on practical test beds, remotely controlled laboratory setups are introduced. The developed laboratory setup, which is accessed and controlled via the Internet, is the first of its kind in the active noise control and acoustic measurements area. The laboratory setup can be shared and utilized 24/7 globally, thus reducing the associated costs and eliminating time restrictions.

This paper describes implementation and evaluation of an existing fingerprint recognition system in MATLAB environment. The selected system is developed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) denoted as Biometric Image Software (NBIS). The NBIS source code is written in ANSI C programming language. To be able to evaluate the algorithm in MATLAB a C language MEX-files has been used. The NBIS support both minutiae extraction and minutiae matching functions that have been employed in the evaluation. The implemented system has been tested on a Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) database. The results are presented as Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) graphs.

    • Human whistle could be a way to perform activation of different kind of devices, for example turn on and off a light in a smart room. Therefore, in this paper a human whistle detection and frequency estimation system is presented. Further, an investigation of human whistling and a robust non-linear feature extraction is presented. A system for robust performance due to sensor change and various noise situations is proposed using these features. Experiments in various noise situations are conducted.

  • Mouth Open or Closed Decision for Frontal Face Images with Given Eye Locations

    • Abstract—Determination of the open/closed state of a mouth is a desired feature considering the face ISO standard. In this paper a simple score is proposed for automatic mouth open/closed decision. Landmarks around the mouth are explored in order to calculate the score. Analysis of mouth location, scale and rotation introduced by nonreflective similarity transformations utilizing prior knowledge regarding the eye locations with the accompanied Jesorsky error is presented. Further, a novel system is proposed in which a search in the four dimensions; position, scale, rotation and shape variation is combined with a discriminative classifier in order to perform alignment of the landmarks. The system is evaluated on the XM2VTS and IMM face databases indicating the feasibility of the proposed system. The evaluation is presented utilizing a cumulative distribution of the mouth open/closed score error.

  • On Histograms and Spatiograms : Introduction of the Mapogram

    • This paper introduces the concept of a mapogram. A mapogram may be viewed as a special form of spatiogram,which is a histogram containing additional spatial information. Additionally, this paper presents theory relevant to the creation of a proposed mapogram. A similarity measure derived from the Bhattacharyya coefficient is obtained in order to make comparisons between mapograms. Examples using a mapogram are given.

    • Prior to 1960's, the fingerprint analysis was carried out manually by human experts and for forensic purposes only. Automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) have been developed during the last 50 years. The success of AFIS resulted in that its use expanded beyond forensic applications and became common also in civilian applications. Mobile phones and computers equipped with fingerprint sensing devices for fingerprint-based user identification are common today.Despite the intense development efforts, a major problem in automatic fingerprint identification is to acquire reliable matching features from fingerprint images with poor quality. Images where the fingerprint pattern is heavily degraded usually inhibit the performance of an AFIS system. The performance of AFIS systems is also reduced when matching fingerprints of individuals with large age variations.This doctoral thesis presents contributions within the field of fingerprint image enhancement, segmentation and minutiae detection. The reliability of the extracted fingerprint features is highly dependent on the quality of the obtained fingerprints. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to have access to high quality fingerprints. Therefore, prior to the feature extraction, an enhancement of the quality of fingerprints and a segmentation are performed. The segmentation separates the fingerprint pattern from the background and thus limits possible sources of error due to, for instance, feature outliers. Most enhancement and segmentation techniques are data-driven and therefore based on certain features extracted from the low quality fingerprints at hand. Hence, different types of processing, such as directional filtering, are employed for the enhancement. This thesis contributes by proposing new research both for improving fingerprint matching and for the required pre-processing that improves the extraction of features to be used in fingerprint matching systems.In particular, the majority of enhancement and segmentation methods proposed herein are adaptive to the characteristics of each fingerprint image. Thus, the methods are insensitive towards sensor and fingerprint variability. Furthermore, introduction of the higher order statistics (kurtosis) for fingerprint segmentation is presented. Segmentation of the fingerprint image reduces the computational load by excluding background regions of the fingerprint image from being further processed. Also using a neural network to obtain a more robust minutiae detector with a patch rejection mechanism for speeding up the minutiae detection is presented in this thesis.

  • Simulations of the VISIR Open Lab Platform

    • This paper presents a queue simulation of the VISIR Open Lab Platform. A model of the platform and statistical distributions of how users interact with the system based on real log files are presented. The system is then simulated in order to determine how many concurrent students that can be allowed to use the platform while at the same time keeping a low response time to ensure the quality of the service. The results show, in a worst case setup with approximately 300 ms response time per experiment, that roughly 100 concurrent users is an upper limit to ensure an average response time below 2 s. The results also show that raising the limit of the desired experiment response time does not necessarily increase the number allowed concurrent users significantly once the system is saturated. However, improving the experiment response time can significantly increase the number of users that can simultaneously be connected.

  • Analysis of Periodicities in Surface Topography of Cold rolled sheets Using Data Captured by Camera System

    • A method for surface analysis of cold rolled sheets is proposed in this paper. The approach is based on a low-cost specially built camera system followed by spectral analysis of the data captured from metal surfaces. The focus is on the changes in the surface topography caused by cold rolling with emphasis towards periodicities in the processed surface. Angular profile of the spectrum is calculated and used to display periodicities in surface topography and show their direction. The results obtained by using the proposed system were compared with results obtained from the optical profilometer MicroProf FRT. The experiments show that cold rolling creates marks on the surface of the material, which represent periodicities that can be effectively detected by the proposed method and camera system. Even though the camera system is not able to measure precise surface roughness, it is able to detect periodicities and the results of spectral analysis are comparable with the results from the optical profilometer.
