    • The intensity of 9Be + p nuclear fusion reactions was experimentally studied during second harmonic (2ω CH) ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) and further analyzed during fundamental hydrogen minority ICRH of JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. In relatively low-density plasmas with a high ICRH power, a population of fast H+ ions was created and measured by neutral particle analyzers. Primary and secondary nuclear reaction products, due to 9Be + p interaction, were observed with fast ion loss detectors, γ-ray spectrometers and neutron flux monitors and spectrometers. The possibility of using 9Be(p, d)2α and 9Be(p, α)6Li nuclear reactions to create a population of fast alpha particles and study their behaviour in non-active stage of ITER operation is discussed in the paper.

  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors

    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Overview of the JET preparation for deuterium-tritium operation with the ITER like-wall

    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

    • Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Z(eff) (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H-98,H-y2 close to 1 and beta(N) similar to 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential.

    • Since the last IAEA Conference JET has been in operation for one year with a programmatic focus on the qualification of ITER operating scenarios, the consolidation of ITER design choices and preparation for plasma operation with the ITER-like wall presently being installed in JET. Good progress has been achieved, including stationary ELMy H-mode operation at 4.5 MA. The high confinement hybrid scenario has been extended to high triangularity, lower ρ*and to pulse lengths comparable to the resistive time. The steady-state scenario has also been extended to lower ρ*and ν*and optimized to simultaneously achieve, under stationary conditions, ITER-like values of all other relevant normalized parameters. A dedicated helium campaign has allowed key aspects of plasma control and H-mode operation for the ITER non-activated phase to be evaluated. Effective sawtooth control by fast ions has been demonstrated with3He minority ICRH, a scenario with negligible minority current drive. Edge localized mode (ELM) control studies using external n = 1 and n = 2 perturbation fields have found a resonance effect in ELM frequency for specific q95values. Complete ELM suppression has, however, not been observed, even with an edge Chirikov parameter larger than 1. Pellet ELM pacing has been demonstrated and the minimum pellet size needed to trigger an ELM has been estimated. For both natural and mitigated ELMs a broadening of the divertor ELM-wetted area with increasing ELM size has been found. In disruption studies with massive gas injection up to 50% of the thermal energy could be radiated before, and 20% during, the thermal quench. Halo currents could be reduced by 60% and, using argon/deuterium and neon/deuterium gas mixtures, runaway electron generation could be avoided. Most objectives of the ITER-like ICRH antenna have been demonstrated; matching with closely packed straps, ELM resilience, scattering matrix arc detection and operation at high power density (6.2 MW m-2) and antenna strap voltages (42 kV). Coupling measurements are in very good agreement with TOPICA modelling. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

  • 14 MeV calibration of JET neutron detectors-phase 1: Calibration and characterization of the neutron source

    • In view of the planned DT operations at JET, a calibration of the JET neutron monitors at 14 MeV neutron energy is needed using a 14 MeV neutron generator deployed inside the vacuum vessel by the JET remote handling system. The target accuracy of this calibration is 10% as also required by ITER, where a precise neutron yield measurement is important, e.g. for tritium accountancy. To achieve this accuracy, the 14 MeV neutron generator selected as the calibration source has been fully characterised and calibrated prior to the in-vessel calibration of the JET monitors. This paper describes the measurements performed using different types of neutron detectors, spectrometers, calibrated long counters and activation foils which allowed us to obtain the neutron emission rate and the anisotropy of the neutron generator, i.e.The neutron flux and energy spectrum dependence on emission angle, and to derive the absolute emission rate in 4π sr. The use of high resolution diamond spectrometers made it possible to resolve the complex features of the neutron energy spectra resulting from the mixed D/T beam ions reacting with the D/T nuclei present in the neutron generator target. As the neutron generator is not a stable neutron source, several monitoring detectors were attached to it by means of an ad hoc mechanical structure to continuously monitor the neutron emission rate during the in-vessel calibration. These monitoring detectors, two diamond diodes and activation foils, have been calibrated in terms of neutrons/counts within ± 5% total uncertainty. A neutron source routine has been developed, able to produce the neutron spectra resulting from all possible reactions occurring with the D/T ions in the beam impinging on the Ti D/T target. The neutron energy spectra calculated by combining the source routine with a MCNP model of the neutron generator have been validated by the measurements. These numerical tools will be key in analysing the results from the in-vessel calibration and to derive the response of the JET neutron detectors to DT plasma neutrons starting from the response to the generator neutrons, and taking into account all the calibration circumstances.

This paper presents the progress since the start of the project in 2014 in the preparatory experiments, analyses and studies in the areas of neutronics, neutron induced activation and damage in ITER materials, nuclear safety, tritium retention, permeation and outgassing, and waste production in preparation of DTE2.

    • This paper presents an overview of the current and planned technological activities at JET in support of ITER operation and safety. The scope is very broad and it ranges from analysis of components from the ITER-like Wall (ILW) to determine material erosion and deposition, dust generation and fuel retention to neutronics measurements and analyses. Preliminary results are given of the post-mortem analyses of samples exposed to JET plasmas during the first JET-ILW operation in 2011-2012, and retrieved during the following in-vessel intervention. JET is the only fusion machine capable of producing significant neutron yields, up to nearly 10(19) n/s (14.1 MeV) in DT operations. Recently, the technological potential of a new DT campaign at JET in support of ITER has been explored and the outcome of this assessment is presented. The expected 14 MeV neutron yield, the use of tritium, the preparation and implementation of safety measures will provide a unique occasion to gain experience in several ITER relevant technological areas. A number of projects and experiments to be conducted in conjunction with the DT operation have been identified and they are described in this paper.

    • JET has operated with divertors of differing geometries since 1994. Impurities accumulated in the inner leg of all the divertors, and operation of the first (Mk I) divertor with beryllium tiles demonstrated that most are eroded from the main chamber walls and swept along the scrape-off layer to the inner divertor. Carbon deposited at the inner divertor is then locally transported to shadowed regions such as the inner louvres, where, for example, most of the tritium was trapped during the deuterium-tritium experiment (DTE1). Factors affecting these transport processes (e.g. temperature) are important for ITER, but are not well understood.

    • The first divertor was installed in the JET machine between 1992 and 1994 and was operated with carbon tiles and then beryllium tiles in 1994-5. Post-mortem studies after these first experiments demonstrated that most of the impurities deposited in the divertor originate in the main chamber, and that asymmetric deposition patterns generally favouring the inner divertor region result from drift in the scrape-off layer. A new monolithic divertor structure was installed in 1996 which produced heavy deposition at shadowed areas in the inner divertor corner, which is where the majority of the tritium was trapped by co-deposition during the deuterium-tritium experiment in 1997. Different divertor geometries have been tested since such as the Gas-Box and High-Delta divertors; a principle objective has been to predict plasma behaviour, transport and tritium retention in ITER. Transport modelling experiments were carried out at the end of four campaigns by puffing C-13-labelled methane, and a range of diagnostics such as quartz-microbalance and rotating collectors have been installed to add time resolution to the post-mortem analyses. The study of material migration after D-D and D-T campaigns clearly revealed important consequences of fuel retention in the presence of carbon walls. They gave a strong impulse to make a fundamental change of wall materials. In 2010 the carbon divertor and wall tiles were removed and replaced with tiles with Be or W surfaces for the ITER-Like Wall Project.

    • A dedicated AMS facility for depth profiling of tritium in carbon samples has been installed, tested and applied to routine measurements in the Forschungszentrum. Rossendorf. It is based on an SF6-insulated 100 kV tandem accelerator equipped with a thin diamond-like carbon (DLC) stripper foil of about 1 mug/cm(2). With this setup carbon samples with tritium concentrations in the range of 5 x 10(10)-10(19) atoms/cm(3) can be analysed. In first routine measurements carbon samples cut from tiles of the inner wall of the fusion experiments ASDEX-upgrade Garching/Germany, JET Culham/UK and TFTR Princeton/USA have been analysed. In addition, depth profiles of deuterium and other light elements can be measured using the Faraday cup at the entrance of the accelerator (SIMS mode of the facility) or in the case of very low concentrations after acceleration using a particle detector (AMS mode).     • The Joint European Torus (JET) fusion machine is the only device capable of operation with tritium and of handling Be and therefore is best suited to the study of tritium and fusion-related issues. A large variety of activities are performed within the JET fusion technology task force (FT-TF). In this paper, some topics such as erosion/deposition and material transport, characterisation of flakes and detritiation techniques are highlighted. Recent examples of results obtained on waste management studies are also given. Data on some ITER-relevant components that have been tested at JET, such as a pumping cryopanel and hardened optics fibers, are presented. In all fields, the work to be addressed in future JET work programmes is discussed.

    • The in-vessel tritium inventory control is one of the most ITER challenging issues which has to be resolved to fulfil safety requirements. This is due mainly to the presence of carbon as a constituent of plasma facing components (PFCs) which leads to a high fuel permanent retention. For several years now, physics studies and technological developments have been undertaken worldwide in order to develop reliable techniques which could be used in ITER severe environment (magnetic field, vacuum, high temperature) for in situ tritium recovery. The scope of this contribution is to review the present status of these achievements and define the remaining work to be done in order to propose a dedicated work program. Different treatment techniques (chemical treatments, photonic cleaning) will be reviewed. In the frame of ITER, they will be compared in terms of fuel removal rate as well as surface accessibility, type of production (gas or particulates), ability to clean mixed material. And lastly, consequences of bulk trapping observed in tokamak on the techniques currently under development will be addressed.

    • In the framework of the ITER Physics Department of the EUROfusion Consortium, JET mission is focused on preparing for the next step devices by developing high performance scenarios and testing reactor relevant techniques and technologies. In terms of scenario development, a complete scan in isotopic composition has already started and, according to the present schedule, should include full T operation and culminate in a 50/50 DT campaign by 2020. In DD, significant increases in input power and various adjustments in fueling have allowed reaching the IPBp8(y,2) scaling up to 3 MA. A complete set of diagnostic upgrades is being implemented to support operation and to guarantee adequate scientific exploitation of the experiments. With regard to the technology, the main enhancements and specific tests are focused on maximizing the returns from the unprecedented 14 MeV neutron field and the tritium fuel cycle.

    • Autoantibodies to insulin are often the first autoantibodies detected in young children with type 1 diabetes and can be present before the onset of clinical diabetes. These autoantibodies and their epitopes are, however, not well characterized. We explored the use of monoclonal antibodies and their recombinant Fab as reagents for epitope analysis. In this study we cloned and characterized the recombinant Fab of the insulin-specific monoclonal antibody CG7C7. We found the epitope of this antibody to be located predominantly at the A-chain loop of the insulin molecule. The recombinant Fab was then used to compete for insulin binding against insulin autoantibodies present in sera from patients with type 1 or type 1.5 diabetes. In competition experiments with sera positive for autoantibodies to insulin the recombinant Fab significantly reduced the binding to [I-125]-insulin by sera of type 1 (n = 35) and type 1.5 diabetes [latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)] (n = 14) patients (P < 0.0001). We conclude that competition between insulin-specific monoclonal antibodies or their recombinant Fab and insulin autoantibodies should prove useful in the epitope analysis of autoantibodies to insulin.

    • The JET Fusion Technology (FT) work programme was launched in 2000, in the frame of the European Fusion Development Agreement, to address issues related to JET and ITER. In particular, there are four topics related to tritium being investigated Based on the experience gained on the existing tokamaks, first calculations indicate that in-vessel tritium retention could represent a burden for ITER operation. Therefore erosion/deposition studies are being performed in order to better understand the layer co-deposition and tritium retention processes in tokamaks. Moreover, testing of in-situ detritiation processes, in particular laser and flash lamp treatments, should assess detritiation techniques for in-vessel components in the ITER-relevant JET configuration. To reduce the constraints on waste disposal, dedicated procedures are being developed for detritiation Of metals, graphite, carbon-fibre composites, process and housekeeping waste. During the operational and decommissioning phases of a fusion reactor, many processes will produce tritiated water. Key components for an ITER relevant water detritiation facility are being studied experimentally with the aim of producing a complete design that could be implemented and tested at JET. This paper describes these topics of the FT-programme, the strategy developed and the results obtained so far.

  • Beryllium and carbon films in JET following D-T operation

    • After the D-T operation (DTE-1 campaign) at JET a large number of limiter and divertor tiles were dismounted from the torus for ex situ examination. The relative distributions of deuterium, tritium, beryllium and carbon are presented and discussed. Significant asymmetry observed in the distribution of erosion and deposition zones indicates preferential flow of the deuterium background plasma and impurities towards the inner divertor leg. The comparison of the beryllium content on the limiter tiles from the main chamber and the content of this element on the inner divertor tiles clearly proves the beryllium erosion from the main chamber wall and its transport to the divertor. However, no beryllium is detected in the shadowed regions of the divertor where the formation of thick and fuel-rich carbon films occurs. This is interpreted in terms of different mechanisms governing the erosion and transport of Be and C. The results allow a conclusion that the operation with a full beryllium wall would lead to a significantly decreased fuel inventory due to removal of the carbon source.

  • Efficacy of photon cleaning of JET divertor tiles

    • Photon cleaning by means of a flash-lamp was used for in-situ detritiation of the inner wall tiles of the JET divertor in May 2004. Additional trials were also performed ex-situ in October 2004 on divertor base tiles. Early work confirmed that for pulse energies between 150 J and 300 J some deposited material was removed. To increase the amount of material removed during photon cleaning, further experiments with higher pulse energies (500 J) were performed and are reported here. Analysis of cross sections confirmed a removal rate of 0.04 mu m/pulse, removing similar to 80 mu m from 200 mu m thick deposits over a treatment area of 15 x 10(-4) m(2). During the photon cleaning tests at least 12% of the tritium inventory for the tile was removed.     • Titanium activation foils for neutron studies were exposed inside the JET tokamak vessel during the entire 15 months long experimental campaign with deuterium fuelling. Afterwards, it was found that the structure of some foils was only slightly affected, while others were totally or partly disintegrated into dust: flakes and powder. The analyses indicated that defects produced in materials by cutting during the sample preparation eventually lead to the degradation of the titanium crystal structure upon the exposure in JET to neutral particles including hydrogen. In some cases, a passive oxide layer on the foil surface effectively prevented the access of hydrogen, and by this protected the metal against partial or complete transformation into the titanium hydride powder.
