  • Next generation IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks : Current status, future directions and open challenges
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Computer Communications. - : Elsevier. - 0140-3664 .- 1873-703X. ; 75, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new generation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) will make its appearance in the market in the forthcoming years based on the amendments to the IEEE 802.11 standards that have recently been approved or are under development. Examples of the most expected ones are IEEE 802.11aa (Robust Audio Video Transport Streaming), IEEE 802.11ac (Very-high throughput at < 6 GHz), IEEE 802.11af (TV White Spaces) and IEEE 802.11ah (Machine-to-Machine communications) specifications. The aim of this survey is to provide a comprehensive overview of these novel technical features and the related open technical challenges that will drive the future WLAN evolution. In contrast to other IEEE 802.11 surveys, this is a use case oriented study. Specifically, we first describe the three key scenarios in which next-generation WLANs will have to operate. We then review the most relevant amendments for each of these use cases focusing on the additional functionalities and the new technologies they include, such as multi-user MIMO techniques, groupcast communications, dynamic channel bonding, spectrum databases and channel sensing, enhanced power saving mechanisms and efficient small data transmissions. We also discuss the related work to highlight the key issues that must still be addressed. Finally, we review emerging trends that can influence the design of future WLANs, with special focus on software-defined MACs and the internet-working with cellular systems.

  • On the performance of packet aggregation in IEEE 802.11ac MU-MIMO WLANs
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Letters. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 1089-7798 .- 1558-2558. ; 16:10, s. 1588-1591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-user spatial multiplexing combined with packet aggregation can significantly increase the performance of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). In this letter, we present and evaluate a simple technique to perform packet aggregation in IEEE 802.11ac MU-MIMO (Multi-user Multiple Input Multiple Output) WLANs. Results show that in non-saturation conditions both the number of active stations (STAs) and the queue size have a significant impact on the system performance. If the number of STAs is excessively high, the heterogeneity of destinations in the packets contained in the queue makes it difficult to take full advantage of packet aggregation. This effect can be alleviated by increasing the queue size, which increases the chances of scheduling a large number of packets at each transmission, hence improving the system throughput at the cost of a higher delay. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

  • Performance analysis of CSMA/CA protocols with multi-packet transmission
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 57:14, s. 2675-2688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless objects equipped with multiple antennas are able to simultaneously transmit multiple packets by exploiting the channel's spatial dimensions. In this paper, we study the benefits of such Multiple Packet Transmission (MPT) approach, when it is used in combination with a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol for fully interconnected networks, addressing the interactions between the two mechanisms and showing the performance gains that can be achieved. To this end, a very simple Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that captures the fundamental properties and tradeoffs of a CSMA/CA channel access protocol supporting MPT is introduced. Using this protocol as a reference, a new analytical model is presented for the case of non-saturated traffic sources with finite buffer space. Simulation results show that the analytical model is able to accurately characterize the steady-state behavior of the reference protocol for different number of antennas and different traffic loads, providing a useful tool for understanding the performance gains achieved by MAC protocols supporting MPT. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. • Performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11p-enabled vehicular video surveillance system
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Letters. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 1089-7798 .- 1558-2558. ; 18:4, s. 708-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prospective IEEE 802.11p-based vehicular surveillance system, where video from the vehicle on-board camera is transmitted to the management center, is considered. Multi-hop transmission from the vehicle to the nearest roadside unit and then-via other roadside units-to the gateway is addressed. In this letter we assess the feasibility of such system by analyzing the video end-to-end distortion for a target vehicle, located several hops away from the gateway, when it is alone or there are also other vehicles transmitting video. We demonstrate the importance of dynamic adaptation of the video bit rate of each vehicle depending on the number and positions of the participating vehicles. © 2014 IEEE.

  • Throughput Analysis in CSMA/CA Networks Using Continuous Time Markov Networks : A Tutorial
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Wireless Networking for Moving Objects. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319141169 ; , s. 115-133
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book chapter introduces the use of Continuous Time Markov Networks (CTMN) to analytically capture the operation of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) networks. It is of tutorial nature, and it aims to be an introduction on this topic, providing a clear and easy-to-follow description. To illustrate how CTMN can be used, we introduce a set of representative and cutting-edge scenarios, such as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), Power Line Communication networks and multiple overlapping Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). For each scenario, we describe the specific CTMN, obtain its stationary distribution and compute the throughput achieved by each node in the network. Taking the per-node throughput as reference, we discuss how the complex interactions between nodes using CSMA/CA have an impact on system performance.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 9, s. 151590-151606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important use case for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) is its application in the warning systems of emergency vehicles (EV). VANET-based vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication can be used to exchange important data and information between traffic lights and EVs, by means of transceivers at both ends. This communication helps in reducing the risks of accidents and also saves valuable time through an optimized orchestration of the traffic lights. This paper outlines the system design of an EV warning system that makes use of V2I communication. The system has been extensively studied in state-of-the-art simulators, such as SUMO and OMNeT++, in a huge variety of scenarios, where metrics for both time and safety have been collected. The results show that SafeSmart is highly effective in reducing trip times as well as increasing the overall safety of EVs in emergency scenarios. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the use of Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) for traffic light preemption in emergency scenarios. The proposed system, called SafeSmart, utilizes VANET-based vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to exchange data between traffic lights and emergency vehicles, improving safety and saving time. SafeSmart attempts to predict the arrival time of emergency vehicles at intersections using historical data and requests signal preemption for the selected route. This paper describes and evaluates the proposed approach through simulations using state-of-the-art simulators SUMO and OMNeT++ and real-world traffic data (Luxembourg SUMO Traffic (LuST) Scenario). The results demonstrate improved trip times and increased safety for emergency vehicles and general public on the road. © 2023 IEEE.

    • Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) is one the central components of inter-vehicular communications protocol stack enabling Cooperative Intelligent Transportation System (C-ITS). In this letter we first present an analytical framework that allows to tune parameters of the DCC algorithm specified by ETSI. Then we suggest two approaches to optimize the DCC configuration using our framework. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed approaches using detailed simulation experiments. We demonstrate that proposed approaches are able to control channel busy ratio stably, while proposed analytical model precisely estimates application level metrics. © 2019 IEEE

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 67:1, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cooperative Awareness on the road is aiming to support the road users with knowledge about the surroundings relying on the information exchange enabled by vehicular com- munications. To achieve this goal European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) delivered the standard EN 302 637-2 for Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAM). The CAM trig- gering conditions are based on the dynamics of the originating vehicle, which is checked periodically. In this paper, we show that standardized ETSI protocol may demonstrate a decrease in communication performance under several realistic mobility patterns. The potential influence of the discovered phenomena on two typical mobility scenarios is studied.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ETSI DCC: Decentralized Congestion Control in C-ITS is a mandatory component of the 5.9 GHz ITS-G5 vehicular communication protocol stack that reduces radio channel overload, range degradation, and self interference. In this tutorial article we explain its principle, describe related ongoing standardization activities, evaluate its performance for emerging cooperative driving applications, and identify ways for improvement. We show that failure to use a proper DCC parameterization can impact negatively on the performance of cooperative vehicular applications.

  • Performance evaluation of C-ACC/platooning under ITS-G5 communications
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are aiming to provide innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, and enable various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated and smarter use of transport networks. Cooperative-ITS (C-ITS) support connectivity between vehicles, vehicles and roadside infrastructure, traffic signals as well as with other road users. In order to enable vehicular communications European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) delivered ITS-G5 -- a of set of C-ITS standards. Considering the goals of C-ITS, inter-vehicle communications should be reliable and efficient. In this thesis we study the performance, efficiency, and dependability of ITS-G5 communications for Cooperative adaptive cruise control (C-ACC) and platooning C-ITS applications. We provide an overview of currently available and ongoing standardization targeting communications in C-ACC/platooning. We study the performance of ITS-G5 beaconing in a C-ACC/platooning scenario, where we show that its performance may deteriorate when implemented in cooperative driving applications due to the kinematic-dependent design of the message triggering mechanism. We explain in detail the cause of this phenomenon and test it for a wide range of parameters. Also, we study the influence of different available ITS-G5 legitimate setups on the C-ACC/platooning fuel efficiency and demonstrate that proper communication setup may enhance fuel savings. This thesis also proposes a jamming denial-of-service attack detection algorithm for platooning. The main advantage of our detector is its short learning phase that not exceed a second and low detection delay of a few hundreds of milliseconds. Under some assumptions, the proposed algorithm demonstrates the ability to detect certain types of attacks with average probability above 0.9.

The subject of this thesis is evaluation of the performance, efficiency, and dependability of ITS-G5 communications for cooperative driving applications support. This thesis includes eight scientific papers and extends the research area in three directions: evaluation of the performance of ITS-G5 beaconing protocols; studying the performance of ITS-G5 congestion control mechanisms; and studying the radio jamming Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and their detection methods.First, an overview of currently available and ongoing standardization targeting communications in C-ACC/platooning cooperative driving applications is provided. Then, as part of the first research direction, we demonstrate via a number of studies, that the adaptive beaconing approach where message generation is coupled to the speed variation of the originating ITS-s may lead to a message synchronization effect in the time domain when vehicles follow mobility scenarios that involve cooperative speed variation. We explain in detail the cause of this phenomenon and test it for a wide range of parameters. In relation to the second problem, we, first, study the influence of different available ITS-G5 legitimate setups on the C-ACC/platooning fuel efficiency and demonstrate that proper communication setup may enhance fuel savings. Then we thoroughly study the standardization of the congestion control mechanism for ITS-G5, which will affect the operation of all cooperative driving C-ITS applications as a mandatory component. We study the influence of congestion control on application performance and give recommendations for improvement to make the congestion control to target at optimizing the applications performance metrics. In the scope of the last research direction, we propose two real-time jamming DoS detection methods. The main advantage of our detection techniques is their short learning phase that not exceed a few seconds and low detection delay of a few hundreds of milliseconds. Under some assumptions, the proposed algorithms demonstrates the ability to detect certain types of attacks with high detection probability.

    • The coming years will see the adoption of IEEE 802.11p equipment, which enables broadband vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside connectivity. The design and validation of prospective safety and infotainment applications in VANETs (Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks) are currently areas of dynamic research. In this paper we introduce novel vehicular applications that are based on video transmission and targeted at improving road safety, efficiency and public security. We argue the case for the practical feasibility of the proposed applications in terms of the number of vehicles that can be supported with acceptable visual quality in VANETs environment. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vehicular adhoc networks are able to provide the awareness among cars, which is exploited by the emergent automotive safety applications, such as lane change warning and electronic brakes. Beaconing, i.e. periodic broadcasting of status messages by each vehicle, is a core communication pattern which all the critical vehicular safety applications rely on. A set of IEEE 802.11p/WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments) protocols is specially designed to support vehicleto-vehicle communication. Notwithstanding, many studies raise the scalability problem of 802.11p carrier sense multiple access, which makes it impossible for the protocol to guarantee the required performance in dense road traffic scenarios. Thus, existing cellular broadband wireless access (BWA) infrastructure, e.g. 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE), IEEE 802.16e (Mobile WiMAX), can be considered as an additional opportunity to support vehicular cooperative safety applications. In this paper we introduce a simple stochastic model for the evaluation of the BWA network used for the beaconing. This model can serve as an easy tool to understand the theoretical limits of different BWA technologies in intelligent transportation systems use cases. © 2012 IEEE.
