  • Managing relationship development and crises in emerging markets : A Swedish firm´s relationship behaviour in Argentina
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: New Policy Challanges for European Multinationals. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 9781781900208 - 9781781900215 ; , s. 421-442
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Researchers rarely touch on the phenomenon of crisis in the relationship itself combined with relationship conflict caused by turbulence in the relationship environment – specifically for emerging markets. The aim of this study is to develop a theoretical view for studying how firms manage business relationships when facing crises caused both by involved parties and by contextual factors.Design/methodology/approach – Based on a business network perspective, the paper develops a relationship view stressing trust/distrust, commitment/de-commitment and uncertainty/knowledge as central explanatory relationship elements. The paper employs longitudinal case study method and discusses how the relationship between the Swedish firm Ericsson and Telefónica in Argentina for the period of 1998–2004. The process view is composed of three phases: the start-up phase, a phase of crisis and instability and finally a phase of restoration.Findings/originality – With the assumption of extensiveness in relationship development and high risk in falling from conflict into critical problems in emerging markets, the paper has elaborated new theoretical and empirical thoughts. The study gains further strength from the fact that the number and intensity of crises is increasing because of the escalation in global interdependency. It contributes further knowledge on strategy decisions like exit, wait and see, take the risk and advance affecting the firms’ business relationship.

  • Innovation Through Business and NGO Co-operation : The Case of Digital Inclusion in the Amazon
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Business, Society and Politics. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 9781780529905 - 9781780529912 ; , s. 281-301
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on the findings in earlier research of the importance of relationships in general, and relationships to social actors in particular to explain innovation processes in emerging economies, the aim of the paper is to reach a better understanding of the mechanisms behind innovations in these economies. This has been accomplished through an investigation of an innovation process and the relationships between two business firms and a NGO that were central for its progression. Theoretically the study is constructed on the concepts of trust, commitment and cultural capability in long and short-term relationships as discussed in business network theory and theory on discontinuous innovation. A case study method is used and the social innovation project ‘Connexão Belterra’ that enabled connectivity in the distant Amazon region of Pará, Brazil, was investigated.

  • Disruption, dissolution and reconstruction : A dialectical view on inter-organizational relationship development
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 35:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes to research on inter-organizational relationship dynamics by applying a dialectical approach. We analyze a situation where the relationship parties have divergent understandings of business exchange, and use a longitudinal, in-depth single case study method to investigate their interaction process. The case study focuses on the relationship between a customer and a supplier in the ferrochrome industry, using the acquisition of the supplier as the trigger of the relationship change process. The paper contributes to studies on relationship dynamics by showing how dynamics of inter-organizational relationships may result from struggles when parties' interests and goals do not align with existing relationship arrangements. In particular, we focus on the process of (re)construction of the relationship and its linkage to the structural properties of the relationship.

  • How does uncertainty impact opportunity development in internationalization?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 27:1, s. 161-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The features of the internationalization of emerging market multinational companies (EMNCs) create a laboratory for extending theory. In this paper, we argue that a high level of asymmetry between prior knowledge and a non-incremental commitment, such as an acquisition, lies at the core of understanding these types of internationalization processes. Our proposed theoretical view is that while some uncertainties in opportunity development are known to the firms and can be managed by available knowledge, disruptive commitments can result in complexes of unstable and unilineal dynamics that bring about unexpected and hence unforeseeable uncertainties. These uncertainties may be a source of future unintended consequences that will have an impact on the firm as the internationalization process unfolds. This view is used for analysis of a longitudinal case study concerning the acquisition of a Swedish firm, Vargon Alloys, by the Turkish corporation Yildirim Group, focusing on the opportunity discovery and exploitation period between 2008 and 2013. By dividing uncertainty into two types (foreseeable and unforeseeable) and analysing the hidden problems that emerged after the sudden fusion of the two networks, the study nuances understanding of the emergent and non-orderly nature of the internationalization process as it unfolds. From a process point of view, the study may aid deeper understanding of complications when discovering and exploiting opportunities.

  • An Interactive View Of Innovations : Adopting A New Timber Solution In An Old Concrete Context
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The IMP Journal. - 2059-1403 .- 0809-7259. ; 2:3, s. 19-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This articles takes an interactive view of innovation with the aim of investigating how physical and organisational resource interfaces within an industrial context will affect and be affected by the adoption of a particular innovation. It is based on a case study of a change process that took place in the Swedish construction industry in the mid and late 1990s centering on the use of timber constructions in tall buldings. The case analysis focuses on describing the resource structure behind a building, and on further analysis of some of the resource interfaces. These resource interfaces have explanatory power in the examination of the focal change process and its outcome. The article ends with an analysis of the particular innovation process from an economic perspective.

  • Becoming a public sector insider -A case study of Swedish digital healthcare start-ups´ entrepreneurial business formation processes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 105, s. 340-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study is to better understand start-ups' entrepreneurial business formation processes from a contextual perspective. We examine a digitalization process in the healthcare sector in Sweden, and investigate the start-up processes taking place in order to reach a better understanding of what it takes for new actors to obtain an insider position in this particular type of highly regulated networks. The study offers important insights into the dynamics of constituent elements in the process, including the sequences of events through which startup processes evolve, and insights into new ventures' initial entry into a business network. It is concluded that the studied processes were interactive, forcing the start-ups to be both innovative and able to conform. It was also found that legitimacy constitute an important resource in this type of politically sensitive context.

  • Beyond Projet Closure : Why some business relationships recur in subsequent projects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Project Management Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 8756-9728 .- 1938-9507. ; 49:2, s. 89-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While a project design provides several managerial advantages within the project life cycle, there are numerous challenges regarding its long-term effects. The aim of this article is to increase our knowledge on the continuity aspect of the project form of organizing, and especially the recurrence of project-based business relationships in subsequent projects. Focusing on the role of network relationships in leveraging between projects, we investigate the reasons for relationship recurrence. Based on a longitudinal case study of three construction projects, our results show that in addition to terminated and dormant relationships after project closure there are recurring relationships, which, unlike the others, do not need reactivation.

  • Political embeddedness of technological development : The IgY case
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Environment. - : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. - 1740-0589. ; 2:4, s. 418-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of the political environment, not the least from supranational entities such as the European Union (EU), is increasingly affecting firms. A common theme among politicians at all levels is the importance of stimulating entrepreneurship and technological development. In research on business networks and technological devlopment, however, this impact has so far attained rather limited attention. In this article, focus is on business-political interaction and its importance for technological development in a small entrepreneurial firm within life science. It is shown that the development process within the firm cannot be explained if the political dimension is not explicitly taken into consideration. Hence, it is suggested that the business-political dimension should be more mphasised in business network studies.

  • Small firms' interaction with political organizations in the European Union
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:6, s. 687-697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • About 99% of all firms in the European Union are small, and politicians are increaslingly emphasizing their importance for job creation, technological development and prosperity. Consequently, the political focus is on these firms and a large number of decisions influencing their business activities are constantly taken by political actors at various levels. The aim of this article is to investigate small firms´interaction with political organizations in the EU. Previous studies have shown that these firms have been obliged to follow the coercive political decisions of the EU´s political units. In this paper, however, we identify some changes which demonstrate political support and influence by small firms. Based on case study approach as well as data from a Swedish survey, four propositions concerning small firms´interaction patterns within the political context of the EU will be highlighted and further discussed.

  • Friends or strangers? Attempts at reactivating buyer–supplier relationships
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 36:2, s. 177-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore an important management aspect of business relationship dynamics, namely, the reactivation process of previously ended buyer–supplier relationships. Design/methodology/approach: A processual case study approach focusing on a single in-depth case has been used. The case is based on longitudinal data from a number of sources concerning one reactivation failure. Findings: Grounded in previous research and based on this study’s case findings, the authors have designed a model of analysis for relationship reactivation processes. Using the model on this study’s particular case, the authors show how the structural properties of network embeddedness and resource ties worked in favor of the process, whereas the social bonds and the lack of them led to mistrust that disturbed the negotiation and, hence, worked against the reactivation process. Originality/value: This study makes a contribution to the field of relationship dynamics by exploring relationship reactivation processes. The designed model shows how reactivation can be understood as an interplay between structural properties and (re)building activities and contributes new knowledge on factors that affect this process.

  • “I want you back”: On the strategic roles of boundary spanners in supplier switching-back processes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 91, s. 234-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper builds upon literature addressing boundary spanners and switching suppliers in order to explore an under-examined aspect of buyer–supplier relationships: how different individuals at multiple organisational levels affect processes by which firms return, or “switch back”, to former suppliers after breaches in their relationships. Our study followed a qualitative approach by applying an abductive research methodology to make sense of 85 semi-structured interviews with executives involved in the erstwhile buyer–supplier relationships that we investigated. We found that supplier switching-back processes (SSBPs) can be understood as constituted by a set of alignments and misalignments between boundary spanners (i.e. top management, purchasing and sales agents, engineers and technicians) in the organisations involved. Thus, peoples' interactions, or lack thereof, directly affect the possibility for buyers and suppliers to restore their severed relationships. We conclude that boundary spanners pursue seven distinct roles during different periods in SSBPs, roles that relate to three identified functions of boundary spanners in such processes. The paper closes by highlighting what our findings imply for business managers, limitations and some possible directions for future research.

  • A business network view on value creation and capture in public-private cooperation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 73, s. 181-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intersecting the boundaries between public and private economic activity, this study contributes to the research on public-private cooperation. It comprehends how these hybrids organizational arrangements influence value creation and capturing mechanisms in infrastructural city projects. A case study based on the development of a public transportation solution in Brazil is undertaken. Using a business network approach, we propose a theoretical framework of value creation and capturing through public-private cooperation and argue that the value is constructed through the complementarity of resources and the cohesiveness of motives of the involved actors. Our findings suggest that the success of the cooperation goes beyond the benefits from simply generating revenues, thereby expanding the value capturing concept.

  • From dusk till dawn : Attracting suppliers for resource mobilization during bankruptcy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 25:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in industrial systems increase the efforts needed to attract a counterpart for resource mobilization. The purpose of the article is to elaborate on the impact of customer attractiveness on supplier resource mobilization during radical changes such as bankruptcy. We use a case study method and focus on an extreme case of supplier resource mobilization, i.e. the study of mobilization during the bankruptcy process of a large company. We investigate how the bankruptcy estate managed resource mobilization necessary for maintaining the bankrupt company's facility from the time of declaration of bankruptcy until the facility could be sold to a new owner (from dusk till dawn), providing a detailed description of how the bankruptcy estate attracted suppliers despite the bankrupt company's previous losses. Our findings show that attractiveness is a valid theoretical tool in order to understand resource mobilization also in situations that lack social aspects of relationships. Furthermore, the study shows that resource embeddedness and knowledge transfer affect customer attractiveness and impact supplier resource mobilization. Finally, we demonstrate that even in settings characterized by relationship ending, both experience- and expectation-based attractiveness exist.

  • On the starting situation for business relationship initiation in turbulent business networks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 39:13, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this study is to develop a model of a starting situation for relationship initiation in turbulent business networks.Design/methodology/approachThe study is designed as an extreme single case study that takes its point of departure in a company's bankruptcy in the Swedish automotive industry.FindingsThis study illustrates how a new business relationship can start from a resource combination previously controlled by one actor (i.e. a single company) in a turbulent business network, thereby bringing nuances to the common understanding that new relationships start in stable business networks where resource combinations are developed between actors in established business relationships.Originality/valuePrevious studies have stated that the development of a mutual orientation between actors leads to the formation of a business relationship. The business relationship then leads to resource adaptations between the two companies. The developed model, however, illustrates that this pattern can be reversed in situations of turbulence. Hence, previously adapted resources might lead to the formations of a business relationship. Based on this observation, the authors argue that there are reasons to question if previous models of business relationship initiation and development in business networks are adequately equipped for analysis in turbulent business networks.

  • The Road to Access : On Business Exchanges in the Setting of a Bankruptcy
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using a business network approach, in this thesis markets are viewed as sets of connected business relationships. Business relationships arise through interaction between actors that want to gain access to external resources. Interaction, in turn, is composed of business exchanges. Business exchanges, such as economic exchange, have only been treated as characteristics of interaction, however. Because of this, many central aspects of business exchanges are hidden in the compound interaction variable. With this as a background, the overall aim of this thesis is to discover new theoretical aspects regarding business exchanges. This overall aim is reached through the purpose of the thesis; that is, to enhance our understanding of the processes in which actors gain access (i.e. rights to property) to supplier resources. The purpose is achieved through a single case study in the setting of the Swedish automotive manufacturer Saab Automobile’s (Saab) bankruptcy in 2011. In the study, I follow Saab, their bankruptcy estate and their subsequent acquirer. Through two research questions I identify and delineate three exchange transaction processes (i.e. ways to structure and execute business exchanges) in which my focal actors gained access to supplier resources. These are trade credit transactions, failed trade credit transactions and reversed trade credit transactions. In previous research, these aspects of business exchanges have not been considered. This is problematic as most inter-firm exchange transactions in the western world today are trade credit transactions (i.e. payment 30–60 days after delivery). Trade credit transactions are processes including expected outcomes of social exchange, exchange of rights and an exchange of things (i.e. product & money). Previous research seems just to have dealt with discrete repeated exchange transactions (i.e. sequences of single events). In conclusion, this thesis suggests that it is important to focus more on the structure and execution of processes, such as in trade credit transactions, through which business exchanges are carried out. Doing so would imply seeing business relationships and networks as phenomena under constant construction.

  • From New Emerging to New Emerging Markets : Stuck in between Opportunity and Risk: Internationalization of Turkish Firms in Romania
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of East-West Business. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1066-9868 .- 1528-6959. ; 26:3, s. 235-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this paper is to study how MNCs from new emerging markets manage the opportunity development in other new emerging markets. The aim is to propose a theoretical frame based on business network theory holding the concepts of opportunity development, risk, knowledge, and commitment used to analyze the Turkish firm's behavior in Romania. With the infusion of risk tolerance concept, the study contributes new knowledge to the internationalization model and aids understanding of how new MNCs develop opportunities. It enriches network theory as it unfolds the role of an actor's risk perception and the role of financial resources.

  • Does CERN procurement result in innovation?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Innovation. The European Journal of Social Science Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1351-1610 .- 1469-8412. ; 28:3, s. 360-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation is stated to be one of the most powerful engines for economic growth in firms, markets and nations today. It is therefore not surprising that policy-makers would like to see innovations as a benefit of publicly spent money; making innovations an additional aim of public procurement (public procurement for innovation). The aim of the paper is to analyse the impact of a science organization's procurement practices on innovation. The intention is also to show how different and contradicting goals and expectations regarding public procurement are described and acted upon by the science organization and its suppliers, and to what extent the outcome of public procurement is innovation. Empirically, the study addresses how the European Organization for Nuclear Research, i.e. CERN, works with procurement; and how their procurement in turn affects CERN's suppliers. Based on a large case study in which more than 100 interviews were conducted over a time period of 8 years, the study contributes to the understanding of the limitations CERN’s procurement rules put on interaction and on innovation. The understanding of the implications of restricting interaction, but also the understanding of the reasons why these rules are put into place, and the dilemmas that follow, are all important contributions.
