  • Health-promoting factors in higher education for a sustainable working life : protocol for a multicenter longitudinal study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - London : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has highlighted the importance of health promotion for health service providers in order to ensure sustainable working life for individuals involved in providing health services. Such sustainability begins when students are preparing to manage their own future health and welfare in working life. It has been suggested that universities, employees and trainee health professionals should adopt or follow a salutogenic approach that not only complements the providing of information on known health risks but also favors health promotion strategies. This paper describes the study design and data collection methods in a planned study aiming to explore health-promoting factors for a sustainable working life among students in higher education within healthcare and social work. METHODS: This protocol describes a multicenter longitudinal study involving Swedish students on higher education programs in the healthcare and social work sectors. In 2018, the study invited students on seven education programs at six universities to participate. These programs were for qualification as: biomedical laboratory scientists (n = 121); dental hygienists (n = 87); nurses (n = 1411); occupational therapists (n = 111); physiotherapists (n = 48); radiographers (n = 60); and, social workers (n = 443). In total, 2283 students were invited to participate. Participants completed a baseline, a self-reported questionnaire including six validated instruments measuring health-promoting factors and processes. There are to be five follow-up questionnaires. Three while the students are studying, one a year after graduating, and one three years after graduating. Each questionnaire captures different health-promoting dimensions, namely: health-promoting resources (i.e. sense of coherence); occupational balance; emotional intelligence; health and welfare; social interaction; and work and workplace experiences/perceptions. DISCUSSION: This study focuses on the vastly important aspect of promoting a sustainable working life for healthcare and social work employees. In contrast to previous studies in this area, the present study uses different, validated instruments in health promotion, taking a salutogenic approach. It is hoped that, by stimulating the implementation of new strategies, the study's findings will lead to education programs that prepare students better for a sustainable working life in healthcare and social work.

  • Assessing the effects of social capital on trade credit in shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture Economics & Management. - 1365-7305 .- 1551-8663.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study assesses and identify major factors of social capital that affect the use of trade credit among shrimp farmers and how these contribute to and affect the profits of households in coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Data was collected through observations, informal discussions, and interviews with 364 shrimp farmers from the Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces. The Probit and Tobit regression models were applied to analyze and evaluate the effect of social capital on the use of trade credit and the amount of trade credit used by farmers. The results show that many social capital factors affect the use of trade credit by shrimp farmers in the investigated areas, including in descending order of importance: profit, wholesale agents, colleague-friend-family line-neighbor, and trust. Besides the factors above, other factors such as agricultural land value, households’ income, distance, experiences in shrimp production, households’ assets, savings, profits of the previous crop, and the average household income had also an effect on trade use and amount of trade credit used by shrimp farming households.

  • Assessment of technical, economic, and allocative efficiencies of shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the World Aquaculture Society. - : Wiley. - 0893-8849 .- 1749-7345. ; 54:4, s. 915-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study applied a stochastic frontier production model to analyze the technical (TE), allocative (AE), and economic (EE) efficiencies of intensive shrimp farming households, and to identify socioeconomic and shrimp farm-specific factors (farm size, labor, feed, seed, chemicals/medicine) that influence the TE, AE, and EE of shrimp production in the Ca Mau, Ben Tre, Bac Lieu, and Tra Vinh provinces of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The AE was calculated based on TE and EE. The stochastic frontier production and cost function model were used to evaluate the EE and TE at the shrimp farming household level. The results showed that the mean TE, AE, and EE of shrimp farming systems were 75%, 68.5%, and 61.4%, respectively. Age, gender, education, experience, cooperatives, and technical training significantly impacted the efficiency of shrimp production. The results suggest that shrimp farmers can improve shrimp productivity and EE by decreasing feed cost (FEE) and medicine/chemical cost (MED) of farm inputs. The study showed that shrimp farmers who participated in training activities, cooperatives, or management boards of aquaculture associations were more technically efficient than other farmers. The findings of this study provide essential information about the TE, AE, and EE of shrimp production, which can help local policy makers and shrimp farmers in the region to make better decisions on how to improve the EE and sustainability of shrimp production in the future. There is a need for recommendations on how to improve policies, technical guidance, and training courses on feed management and feeding practices, water quality, and disease management, to help shrimp farmers in the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta to improve their shrimp production efficiencies in the future.

  • Measurement of the Mo-92,Mo-93,Mo-94,Mo-100(gamma,n) reactions by Coulomb Dissociation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1, s. art. no. 012034-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Coulomb Dissociation (CD) cross sections of the stable isotopes Mo-92,Mo-94,Mo-100 and of the unstable isotope Mo-93 were measured at the LAND/(RB)-B-3 setup at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Experimental data on these isotopes may help to explain the problem of the underproduction of Mo-92,Mo-94 and Ru-96,Ru-98 in the models of p-process nucleosynthesis. The CD cross sections obtained for the stable Mo isotopes are in good agreement with experiments performed with real photons, thus validating the method of Coulomb Dissociation. The result for the reaction Mo-93(gamma,n) is especially important since the corresponding cross section has not been measured before. A preliminary integral Coulomb Dissociation cross section of the Mo-94(gamma,n) reaction is presented. Further analysis will complete the experimental database for the (gamma,n) production chain of the p-isotopes of molybdenum.

  • Using multi-actor labs as a tool to drive sustainability transitions in coastal-rural territories : Application in three European regions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: GAIA. - 0940-5550 .- 2625-5413. ; 33, s. 57-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi -actor labs (MALs), a form of real -world social experiments, were implemented in three coastal -rural regions in France (Charente River Basin), Spain (Mar Menor), and Greece (South-West Messinia) to better assess and tackle coastal -rural interactions that govern local sustainability challenges, such as water use conflicts and biodiversity degradation. The MALs used participative methodologies based on systems thinking and transition management. Stakeholders were continuously engaged in a series of workshops to co -produce knowledge, reach a common understanding of the sustainability challenges and issues at stake, and co -design solutions in the form of a roadmap for sustainable transitions in coastal -rural regions. This paper evaluates MALs to provide examples of successful sustainability transition experiments based on the outputs produced, outcomes achieved, and processes used in the three coastal, rural regions.

  • Pygmy Dipole Strength in Exotic Nuclei and the Equation of State
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1165, s. 181-184 461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A concentration of dipole strength at energies below the giant dipole resonance was observed in neutron-rich nuclei around Sn-132 in an experiment using the FRS-LAND setup. This so-called "pygmy" dipole strength can be related to the parameters of the symmetry energy and to the neutron skin thickness on the grounds of a relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation. Using this ansatz and the experimental findings for Sn-130 and 132 Sri, we derive a value of the symmetry energy pressure of (p) over bar (0) = 2.2 +/- 0.5 MeV/fm(3). Neutron skin thicknesses of R-n-R-p = 0.23 +/- 0.03 fm and 0.24 +/- 0.03 fm for Sn-130 and Sn-132, respectively, have been determined. Preliminary results on Ni-68 from a similar experiment using an improved setup indicate an enhanced cross section at low energies, while the results for Ni-58 are in accordance with results from photoabsorption measurements.

  • Study of dipole excitations and the single particle structure of neutron rich Ni isotopes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1012, s. 389-391 453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experiment was performed using the FRS-LAND setup at GSI to study the dipole strength distributions above neutron separation threshold for neutron-rich Ni isotopes. Measurements, using the same experimental setup, were also carried out to extract single particle occupancies via knockout reactions to investigate the structure and magicity of the neutron-rich Ni isotopes. The status of the data analysis and preliminary results are presented.

  • Pathways from research to sustainable development: Insights from ten research projects in sustainability and resilience
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: AMBIO. - : Springer Nature. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on collective experience from ten collaborative research projects focused on the Global South, we identify three major challenges that impede the translation of research on sustainability and resilience into better-informed choices by individuals and policy-makers that in turn can support transformation to a sustainable future. The three challenges comprise: (i) converting knowledge produced during research projects into successful knowledge application; (ii) scaling up knowledge in time when research projects are short-term and potential impacts are long-term; and (iii) scaling up knowledge across space, from local research sites to larger-scale or even global impact. Some potential pathways for funding agencies to overcome these challenges include providing targeted prolonged funding for dissemination and outreach, and facilitating collaboration and coordination across different sites, research teams, and partner organizations. By systematically documenting these challenges, we hope to pave the way for further innovations in the research cycle.
