  • Opposing effects of adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 on energy metabolism
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: DIABETES. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 56:3, s. 583-593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adipocyte-derived hormone adiponectin regulates glucose and lipid metabolism and influences the risk for developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Adiponectin binds to two different seven-transmembrane domain receptors termed AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. To study the physiological importance of these receptors, AdipoR1 gene knockout mice (AdipoR1−/−) and AdipoR2 gene knockout mice (AdipoR2−/−) were generated. AdipoR1−/− mice showed increased adiposity associated with decreased glucose tolerance, spontaneous locomotor activity, and energy expenditure. However, AdipoR2−/− mice were lean and resistant to high-fat diet–induced obesity associated with improved glucose tolerance and higher spontaneous locomotor activity and energy expenditure and reduced plasma cholesterol levels. Thus, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 are clearly involved in energy metabolism but have opposing effects.

  • Visualization of Borna Disease Virus Protein Interactions with Host Proteins using in situ Proximity Ligation Assay
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: British journal of virology. - : ResearchersLinks Ltd. - 2055-6128. ; 3:1, s. 11-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Borna disease virus type 1 (BDV) comprises highly conserved neurotropic non-segmented negative strand RNA-virus variants causing neurological and behavioral disorders in a wide range of mammalian animals, possibly including humans. Viral persistence in the brain has been frequently observed, however, the exact mechanisms behind BDV’s ability to establish persistence despite a prominent immune response are not known. Here we have used in situ proximity ligation assay (in situ PLA), a selective tool for studying virus-host protein-protein interactions. BDV P (phosphoprotein) and N (nucleoprotein) have previously been reported to interact with several host proteins, thereby interfering with various signaling pathways. In this study, we focused on some of these interactions (BDV P-HMGB1, BDV N/P-Cdc2). First, we used rat glioma cell cultures persistently infected with a laboratory strain of BDV (C6BV) to establish the assay. Next, in situ PLA was applied to detect BDV P in brain tissues of infected animals. Finally, protein-protein interactions were visualized in both C6BV and brain tissues of experimentally as well as naturally infected animals (rat and horse, respectively). BDV proteins and their interactions with host proteins could be shown in cell cultures (HMGB1, Cdc2) and in brain tissues of rat (HMGB1, Cdc2) and horse (Cdc2 only) infected with BDV. In this study, we have for the first time directly visualized protein-protein interactions between BDV and its host, and thereby confirmed previous data to demonstrate findings in cell cultures to be applicable also in experimentally and naturally infected animals.

  • Health-promoting factors in higher education for a sustainable working life : protocol for a multicenter longitudinal study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - London : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has highlighted the importance of health promotion for health service providers in order to ensure sustainable working life for individuals involved in providing health services. Such sustainability begins when students are preparing to manage their own future health and welfare in working life. It has been suggested that universities, employees and trainee health professionals should adopt or follow a salutogenic approach that not only complements the providing of information on known health risks but also favors health promotion strategies. This paper describes the study design and data collection methods in a planned study aiming to explore health-promoting factors for a sustainable working life among students in higher education within healthcare and social work. METHODS: This protocol describes a multicenter longitudinal study involving Swedish students on higher education programs in the healthcare and social work sectors. In 2018, the study invited students on seven education programs at six universities to participate. These programs were for qualification as: biomedical laboratory scientists (n = 121); dental hygienists (n = 87); nurses (n = 1411); occupational therapists (n = 111); physiotherapists (n = 48); radiographers (n = 60); and, social workers (n = 443). In total, 2283 students were invited to participate. Participants completed a baseline, a self-reported questionnaire including six validated instruments measuring health-promoting factors and processes. There are to be five follow-up questionnaires. Three while the students are studying, one a year after graduating, and one three years after graduating. Each questionnaire captures different health-promoting dimensions, namely: health-promoting resources (i.e. sense of coherence); occupational balance; emotional intelligence; health and welfare; social interaction; and work and workplace experiences/perceptions. DISCUSSION: This study focuses on the vastly important aspect of promoting a sustainable working life for healthcare and social work employees. In contrast to previous studies in this area, the present study uses different, validated instruments in health promotion, taking a salutogenic approach. It is hoped that, by stimulating the implementation of new strategies, the study's findings will lead to education programs that prepare students better for a sustainable working life in healthcare and social work.

  • A new perspective of missed nursing care – the emergency department context: a descriptive, cross-sectional study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Emergency Nursing. - 0099-1767 .- 1527-2966. ; 50:3, s. 392-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: This descriptive cross-sectional study describes missed nursing care, quality of care, and patient safety rated by nursing staff in emergency departments. Required patient care that is omitted or delayed (missed nursing care) is associated with poorer quality of care and increased risk for adverse events, but studies are scarce in the emergency setting. Methods: Emergency registered nurses and nursing assistants (N=126) at 2 Swedish emergency departments participated in the study. The MISSCARE survey -Swedish version was used for data collection. Results: Emergency nursing staff assessed that nursing care is frequently missed in the emergency department. More than half of the 24 nursing care items were reported as missed by over 50% of the participants, and registered nurses rated most items significantly higher compared to nursing assistants. Half of the nursing staff perceived quality of care to be good, but nearly the same proportion perceived patient safety as poor. Registered nurses viewed both quality and safety worse than nursing assistants. Discussion: The present study found very high levels of missed nursing care in most nursing items. Results indicate that nursing staff in emergency departments need to prioritize between the tasks and that some tasks may not be relevant in the context. The emergency setting focuses primarily on identifying signs of urgency, assessing patients, performing interventions, and diagnostics. However, even items that seemed to be prioritized, such as reassessment of vital signs, had a surprisingly high level of missed nursing care in comparison to in -hospital wards.

  • Nursing staff ratio and skill mix in Swedish emergency departments : A national cross-sectional benchmark study.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 29:8, s. 2594-2602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To describe ratio and skill mix for nursing staff in Swedish emergency departments over a specific 24-hour period.BACKGROUND: The link between number of patients per nursing staff and missed nursing care is well described within the in-hospital setting, showing association with negative outcomes such as increased mortality. Potential association within the emergency department setting is still unexplored.METHOD: A national descriptive cross-sectional benchmark study.RESULTS: The majority (n=54; 89%) of Swedish emergency departments participated. The patients-per-registered nurse ratio varied between the shifts, from 0.3 patients to 8.8 patients (mean 3.2). The variation of patients per licensed practical nurse varied, from 1.5 to 23.5 patients (mean 5.0). The average skill mix was constant at around 60% registered nurses and 40% licensed practical nurses.CONCLUSION: The varying ratios for patient per registered nurse and licensed practical nurse in Swedish emergency departments is noteworthy. Furthermore, the patient flow and nursing staff numbers did not match one another, resulting in higher nursing staff ratios during the evening shift.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Findings can be used to improve rosters in relation to crowding, to manage the challenging recruitment and retention situation for nursing staff and to improve patient safety.

  • Evaluating a Mobility Service Application for Business Travel: Lessons Learnt from a Demonstration Project
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability (Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 12:3, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business travel contributes to significant greenhouse gas emissions, and there is a need for measures that reduce the demand for trips made with energy-intensive means of transport. In this study, a mobility service application (MSA) introduced in 13 Swedish organisations was tested and evaluated to facilitate booking and handling of business trips, in particular public transport. A before and after study consisting of surveys and interviews with employees at the organisations were conducted. The results show that the MSA was mostly used for regional and local public transport trips, and the users stated that the MSA made it easier to travel by public transport, although this particular result should be seen as tentative due to the small sample size. Three factors that influence the success of a new MSA as a means to increase sustainable business trips were identified: management control and proactiveness; perceived improvement of intervention; functions and technical sufficiency. The results also highlight the need to establish organisational conditions that facilitate sustainable business travel, such as coherent travel policy, accessibility to sustainable modes of transport, and a culture that encourages environmentally friendly behaviour. The study suggests improvements that can be made to similar interventions and strategies that can be introduced to promote sustainable business travel.

  • Adequate iodine nutrition in Sweden: a cross-sectional national study of urinary iodine concentration in school-age children.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European journal of clinical nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0954-3007 .- 1476-5640. ; 63:7, s. 828-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Objectives:Sweden has a long-standing salt iodization program; however, its effects on iodine intake have never been monitored on a national level. The objective of this study was to evaluate iodine nutrition in the Swedish population by measuring the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in a national sample of Swedish school-age (6-12 years of age) children.Subjects/Methods:A stratified probability proportionate to size cluster sampling method was used to obtain a representative national sample of school-age children from 30 clusters. Spot urine samples were collected for UIC analysis using a modified Sandell-Kolthoff method. Results:The median UIC of the children (n=857) was 125 mug/l (range 11-757 mug/l). The proportion of children with a UIC <100 mug/l was 30.0% and the proportion of children with a UIC <50 and >300 mug/l was 5.5 and 3.0%, respectively. Conclusions:The iodine nutritional status of the Swedish population is adequate. Iodized table salt remains the main dietary source of iodine in Swedish diet. Recommendations to reduce total salt intake in the population urge increased use of iodized salt in the production of processed foods. Pregnant and lactating women with high iodine requirements may still be at risk for low iodine intake. This study will serve as the basis for future monitoring of iodine nutritional status in Sweden.European Journal of Clinical Nutrition advance online publication, 10 September 2008; doi:10.1038/ejcn.2008.46.

  • Assessing the Quality of Knowledge for Adaptation : Experiences From Co-designing Climate Services in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Climate. - Lausanne, Switzerland : Frontiers Research Foundation. - 2624-9553. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adaptation to climate change is becoming more urgent, but the wealth of knowledge that informs adaptation planning and decision-making is not used to its full potential. Top-down approaches to knowledge production are identified as one important reason for the gap between science and practice and are criticized for not meeting the needs of intended users. In response to this challenge, there is a growing interest in the creation of user-oriented and actionable climate services to support adaptation. At the same time, recent research suggests that greater efforts are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of knowledge co-production processes and the best criteria by which to gauge the quality of knowledge outcomes, while also considering different stakeholder perspectives. This paper explores these issues through a critical assessment of the quality of knowledge for adaptation generated from a climate services co-design process in two case studies in Sweden. The study draws on experiences from a 5-year research collaboration in which natural and social science researchers, together with local stakeholders, co-designed climate services to support climate adaptation planning and decision-making. The well-established knowledge quality criteria of credibility, legitimacy, saliency, usability, and usefulness remain relevant, but are not sufficient to capture factors relating to whether and how the knowledge actually is applied by climate change adaptation planners and decision-makers. We observe that case-specific circumstances beyond the scope of the co-design process, including the decision-making context as well as non-tangible outcomes, also play crucial roles that should be accounted for in the knowledge assessment processes.

  • Adrenocorticotrophic hormone lowers serum Lp(a) and LDL cholesterol concentrations in hemodialysis patients
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Kidney International. - : Elsevier BV. - 1523-1755 .- 0085-2538. ; 52:6, s. 1651-1655
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previously, we have shown that short-term administration of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) results in reduced concentrations of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, including lipoprotein(a), and reduced activities of hepatic lipase. These effects were observed in steroid-treated patients suffering from iatrogenic ACTH deficiency and in healthy individuals. The direct nature of the influence of ACTH on hepatic lipoprotein metabolism was confirmed by in vitro experiments. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effects of ACTH treatment on uremic patients, who exhibit disturbed lipoprotein pattern due to the slow removal of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and who probably are ACTH resistant. Eight patients on chronic hemodialysis were studied. After one intramuscular injection of Synacthen Depot (a synthetic ACTH1-24 preparation from Ciba Geigy AG, Basel, Switzerland) 1 mg, the only change noted was a significant reduction of 26% in median lipoprotein(a) concentration. After five injections, a further decrease (65%) was found in the lipoprotein(a) concentration. Also, reductions in median concentrations of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B were observed. The magnitude of these changes was 15 to 30%. In contrast to previously studied groups, no changes were observed regarding triglyceride metabolism. Significantly increased median concentration of apolipoprotein CIII was found. However, the excess apolipoprotein CIII was confined to the fraction that was not associated with apolipoprotein B. Thus, administration of ACTH to uremic patients improved their atherogenic lipoprotein profile, a fact that may have future therapeutic implications. In comparison to previously studied groups, the uremic patients responded rather slowly and not at all regarding triglyceride metabolism.

  • Corticotropin-induced reduction of plasma lipoprotein(a) concentrations in healthy individuals and hemodialysis patients: relation to apolipoprotein(a) size polymorphism
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Metabolism, Clinical and Experimental. - 1532-8600. ; 48:3, s. 342-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], a strong independent cardiovascular risk factor, consists of the unique apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)] covalently linked to a low-density lipoprotein particle. Apo(a) contains a widely differing number of the plasminogen-like kringle IV, a size polymorphism that is codominantly inherited. In addition to powerful genetic control, renal failure is known to influence the plasma Lp(a) concentration. There is still a lot to be learned about the mode and site of catabolism of Lp(a), and there is no readily applicable Lp(a)-lowering treatment available. Therefore, it was of interest to study further the Lp(a)-lowering effect of corticotropin (ACTH) that has been demonstrated in small studies. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of ACTH on different apo(a) isoforms. Short-term treatment with ACTH decreased the plasma Lp(a) concentration in all 26 study participants. The two study groups (12 healthy individuals and 14 hemodialysis patients) responded similarly, with a median decrease in plasma Lp(a) of 39% and 49%, respectively. In subjects with two clearly separable apo(a) bands, apo(a) phenotyping and densitometric scanning of the bands before and after treatment with ACTH revealed a change in the proportion of apo(a) isoforms, ie, a shift toward the isoform with lower molecular weight. This was observed in seven of nine investigated subjects (four of five healthy individuals and three of four hemodialysis patients).

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Clinical & Laboratory Investigation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7686 .- 0036-5513. ; 61:4, s. 301-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Treatment with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has a well-documented cholesterol-lowering effect. Increased uptake of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) by HepG2 cells in response to incubation with ACTH has been demonstrated but the precise cholesterol-lowering mechanism has resisted elucidation. Since apolipoproteins are important determinants of lipoprotein metabolism, we sought to extend the knowledge of the effect of ACTH treatment on the serum apolipoprotein (apo) pattern. Twelve healthy individuals and 14 dyslipoproteinemic hemodialysis patients were recruited. The two groups responded similarly to ACTH1-24 at the dose of 1 mg daily for four days. In accordance with previous results, serum concentrations of total cholesterol decreased by 18% and 17%, LDL cholesterol by 25% and 30%, and apo B by 20% and 19%, respectively, while there were no significant changes in the serum concentrations of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apo AI. Novel findings were that the serum concentrations of total apo E increased by 48% and 31%, and apo B-associated apo E by 69% and 46%, respectively. Moreover, in the healthy individuals, the serum concentrations of apo CIII did not change in response to ACTH, whereas in the hemodialysis patients, those of apo CIII not associated with apo B increased significantly by 44%. Since apo E binds strongly to the LDL receptor, the present results suggest that the cholesterol-lowering effect of ACTH may be mediated by facilitated hepatic uptake of apo E-enriched apo B-containing lipoproteins. Thus, the findings stimulate further research.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2385 .- 0931-0509. ; 16:1, s. 45-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The atherothrombotic risk pattern of the nephrotic syndrome resembles that of hyperhomocysteinemia. However, the effect of nephrotic range proteinuria on homocysteine metabolism has never been studied. METHODS: The study included 11 male nephrotic patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy who underwent a treatment trial with adrenocorticotrophic hormone and 11 male non-nephrotic, renal function-matched control subjects. The nephrotic patients were studied before and after the treatment, which induced a marked reduction in urinary protein excretion and a moderate improvement in renal function in all cases. RESULTS: Plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentration did not change significantly during treatment, whereas the nephrotic patients had significantly lower tHcy than the non-nephrotic patients (14.2 +/- 3.4 micromol/l vs 19.0 +/- 5.4 micromol/l). tHcy correlated significantly with serum concentrations of creatinine (r = 0.53, P < 0.05) and albumin (r = 0.43, P < 0.05), glomerular filtration rates (GFRs) (iohexol clearances) (r = -0.42, P < 0.05) and urinary albumin excretion (r = -0.47, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The expected tHcy-lowering effect of improved renal function may have masked a tHcy-elevating effect due to reduced proteinuria leading to no net change in tHcy during treatment. The notion of an increase in tHcy associated with remission of the nephrotic syndrome is in accordance with the significantly lower tHcy in the nephrotic renal patients compared with the non-nephrotic renal function-matched patients, and the relationships between tHcy and serum albumin concentrations as well as urinary albumin excretion. Thus, the results of this small study suggest that nephrotic range proteinuria directs homocysteine metabolism towards a decrease in tHcy. However, the findings need to be confirmed in larger patient populations and in different varieties of the nephrotic syndrome.

  • Drama and Learning in Nursing Education : A study in first and second cycle
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to explore and describe the nature of students learning through drama in nursing education, in first and second cycle. Methods: Study I was conducted as an integrative review of the literature. Study II was performed as a qualitative phenomenographic study were 16 nursing students was interviewed. In study III 43 group assignment by nursing students in first cycle were analyzed using Qualitative content Analysis. Study IV was conducted as a qualitative phenomenographic study where 15 nursing students in second cycle was individually interviewed. Results: The findings in study I showed that drama can be used effectively in nursing education to enhance students' learning. The summarized results of the empirical studies (II–IV) showed that drama enabled the students to learn about themselves and develop a higher self-awareness. Learning through drama also gave the students opportunities to learn about others by exploring the perspectives of colleagues, patients, and patients' next of kin in fictive nursing situations. The findings showed in addition that drama could make the theoretical course content more concrete and easier to grasp. Learning through drama activated the students' learning by offering them the possibility to be active and explore various roles and scenarios, and by promoting reflection in which they could share experiences with their peers. By participating in drama, the students reached an evolving identification with the profession of a nurse (II–III) and of a specialist nurse in paediatric care (IV). Conclusion: Drama in nursing education has the unique potential to prepare nursing students in both first and second cycle for their future nursing role. Through drama, students are given the opportunity to explore and gain knowledge about how to use theoretical knowledge in practice, about their inner selves, and about other person's perspectives.

  • Widespread episodic thiamine deficiency in Northern Hemisphere wildlife
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many wildlife populations are declining at rates higher than can be explained by known threats to biodiversity. Recently, thiamine (vitamin B-1) deficiency has emerged as a possible contributing cause. Here, thiamine status was systematically investigated in three animal classes: bivalves, ray-finned fishes, and birds. Thiamine diphosphate is required as a cofactor in at least five life-sustaining enzymes that are required for basic cellular metabolism. Analysis of different phosphorylated forms of thiamine, as well as of activities and amount of holoenzyme and apoenzyme forms of thiaminedependent enzymes, revealed episodically occurring thiamine deficiency in all three animal classes. These biochemical effects were also linked to secondary effects on growth, condition, liver size, blood chemistry and composition, histopathology, swimming behaviour and endurance, parasite infestation, and reproduction. It is unlikely that the thiamine deficiency is caused by impaired phosphorylation within the cells. Rather, the results point towards insufficient amounts of thiamine in the food. By investigating a large geographic area, by extending the focus from lethal to sublethal thiamine deficiency, and by linking biochemical alterations to secondary effects, we demonstrate that the problem of thiamine deficiency is considerably more widespread and severe than previously reported.

These auto-Abs were recently reported to account for at least 10% of cases of life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia in the general population. We report 22 APS-1 patients from 21 kindreds in seven countries, aged between 8 and 48 yr and infected with SARS-CoV-2 since February 2020. The 21 patients tested had auto-Abs neutralizing IFN-α subtypes and/or IFN-ω; one had anti-IFN-β and another anti-IFN-ε, but none had anti-IFN-κ. Strikingly, 19 patients (86%) were hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia, including 15 (68%) admitted to an intensive care unit, 11 (50%) who required mechanical ventilation, and four (18%) who died. Ambulatory disease in three patients (14%) was possibly accounted for by prior or early specific interventions. Preexisting auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs in APS-1 patients confer a very high risk of life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia at any age.

  • Fractional excretion of IgG in idiopathic membranous nephropathy with nephrotic syndrome: a predictive marker of risk and drug responsiveness.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BMC Nephrology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2369. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Treatment of idiopathic membranous nephropathy with nephrotic syndrome is still controversial. There is currently little known about the clinical use of renal biomarkers which may explain contradictory results obtained from clinical trials. In order to assess whether IgG-uria can predict the outcome in membranous nephropathy, we examined the value of baseline EF-IgG in predicting remission and progression of nephrotic syndrome. METHODS: In a prospective cohort of 84 (34 female) idiopathic membranous nephropathy patients with nephrotic syndrome we validated the ability of the clinically available urine biomarker, IgG, to predict the risk of kidney disease progression and the beneficial effect of immunosuppression with steroids and cyclophosphamide. The fractional excretion of IgG (FE-IgG) and α1-microglobulin (FE-α1m), urine albumin/creatinine ratio, and eGFR were measured at the time of kidney biopsy. Primary outcome was progression to end stage kidney failure or kidney function (eGFR) decline ≥ 50% of baseline. Patients were followed up for 7.2 ± 4.1 years (range 1-16.8). RESULTS: High FE-IgG (≥ 0.02) predicted an increased risk of kidney failure (Hazard Ratio, (HR) 8.2, 95%CI 1.0-66.3, p=0.048) and lower chance of remission (HR 0.18, 95%CI 0.09-0.38, p<0.001). The ten-year cumulative risk of kidney failure was 51.7% for patients with high FE-IgG compared to only 6.2% for patients with low FE-IgG. During the study, only 24% of patients with high FE-IgG entered remission compared to 90% of patients with low FE-IgG. Combined treatment with steroids and cyclophosphamide decreased the progression rate (-40%) and increased the remission rate (+36%) only in patients with high FE-IgG. CONCLUSION: In idiopathic membranous nephropathy patients with nephrotic syndrome, FE-IgG could be useful for predicting kidney disease progression, remission, and response to treatment.

  • Benefiting from an open-ended experiment? A comparison of attitudes to, and outcomes of, an expository versus an open-inquiry version of the same experiment
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Science Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0950-0693 .- 1464-5289. ; 25:3, s. 351-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we compare outcomes of an open-inquiry and an expository version of a chemistry laboratory experiment at university level for 190 students. The aim of the study was to investigate if these two versions would result in different outcomes depending on the students' attitudes towards learning. We used a questionnaire to find out their attitude position prior to the laboratory experiment. The outcome in the different version of the experiment was evaluated by interviews, questions asked during the experiment and students self-evaluations. The main findings were that the open-inquiry version shows the most positive outcomes regarding learning outcome, preparation time, time spent in the laboratory and student perception of the experiment. The students with low attitude position needed more support to meet the challenge of an open-inquiry experiment, the support being a clearer explanation of the aims, and feedback from the instructor during the experiment.

  • ACTH revisited - potential implications for patients with renal disease

  • Ingår i: Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2385 .- 0931-0509. ; 15:7, s. 940-942

    • Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) facilitates the synthesis of adrenal glucocorticoids by maintaining the enzymes that control the side-chain cleavage of cholesterol, the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of steroids 1]. Thus, ACTH is involved in the control of adrenal lipid metabolism. Recent studies have revealed that treatment with ACTH in pharmacological dosage also influences plasma lipoprotein metabolism. This applies to both healthy individuals [2–4] and patients with different types of renal disease [5–7]. Moreover, the results of one of these recent studies suggest that treatment with ACTH has beneficial effects on the glomerular function of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy [7].

  • Beneficial effects of ACTH on the serum lipoprotein profile and glomerular function in patients with membranous nephropathy
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Kidney International. - : Elsevier BV. - 1523-1755 .- 0085-2538. ; 56:4, s. 1534-1543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that short-term treatment with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has a strong and rapid lipid-lowering effect. In this long-term study of nephrotic patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy, the influence of ACTH on the serum lipoprotein profile and glomerular function as well as the dose-effect relationship was investigated. METHODS: Fourteen patients received ACTH intramuscularly at increasing doses during 56 days. Serum concentrations of lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins as well as variables of glomerular function were analyzed, and the side-effects were recorded. ACTH treatment, in the estimated optimal dosage, was then continued in five patients with severe steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. In these five patients, the total treatment period was 12 months, and the follow-up time after discontinuing treatment was 18 months. RESULTS: Taking both the statistically significant therapeutic effects and the modest side-effects into consideration, the optimal dosage of ACTH was estimated to be 1 mg twice per week. At that dose, reductions by 30 to 60% in the serum concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, and lipoprotein(a) were observed, whereas the serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein AI rose by 30 to 40%. In addition, the urinary albumin excretion decreased by 90%, and the glomerular filtration rate increased by 25%. Deterioration was observed in all cases when ACTH was discontinued after a treatment duration of 56 days. However, the five patients in whom ACTH therapy was resumed were still in remission 18 months after discontinuance of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: In nephrotic patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy, treatment with ACTH 1 mg twice per week was associated with significant long-term improvements in serum lipoprotein pattern and glomerular function.

  • Normal weight adiposity in a Swedish population: how well is cardiovascular risk associated with excess body fat captured by BMI?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Obesity Science & Practice. - : Wiley. - 2055-2238. ; 1:1, s. 50-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective The aim of this study was to examine how well body mass index (BMI) reflects cardiovascular risk associated with excess adiposity in a Swedish population by examining the association between body fat, BMI and cardiovascular risk factors. Methods A total of 3,010 adults participated. Normal weight adiposity was defined as the combination of BMI<25 kg/m2 and percentage body fat ≥35% for women and ≥25% for men. Associations with blood pressure, blood lipids, apolipoproteins and C-reactive protein were analysed in age-adjusted regression models. Results The majority of the individuals with overweight and obesity were correctly classified to adiposity, while a wide range of body fat was observed among the normal weight subjects. In total, 9% of the participants were categorised as normal weight with adiposity. Compared with the normal weight leanness group, participants with normal weight adiposity had higher levels of serum triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, C-reactive protein, apolipoptotein B and the apolipoprotein B/A-I ratio. In normal weight men, adiposity was also associated with higher blood pressure and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Conclusions Higher percentage of body fat was associated with less favourable risk factor profile even in subjects who were normal weight. Thus, it might be relevant to screen for metabolic risk factors in the upper end of the normal weight category.

    • Background: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanSurvivors of childhood cancer are a growing population in society. These young people have a high risk of developing chronic health problems with a potential strong impact on their lives. How a childhood cancer experience affects survivors in adolescence has been studied to a limited extent; an increased understanding of this young group is needed to improve follow-up care. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanObjective: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanThe aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how childhood cancer affects the lives of survivors by exploring adolescents and young adults views of what it is like living with this experience. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanFifty-nine 11- to 22-year-olds were interviewed a median of 5 years after a cancer diagnosis (response rate, 66%). Data were collected through telephone interviews and were analyzed using qualitative content analysis techniques. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanThree groups of informants were identified according to their descriptions of the influence of cancer treatment on their daily life: feeling like anyone else (informants who described that the cancer experience had almost no influence on current life) (49%), feeling almost like others (those who described some influence) (44%), and feeling different (those describing a great influence on current life) (7%). less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMost of the adolescents and young adults appear to get along well, although many informants described that life was affected to some extent by having had cancer. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanImplications for Practice: less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanFollow-up care is needed that can identify those young survivors of childhood cancer having trouble with daily life and offer them support to strengthen their resources in managing difficulties in relation to having had cancer.
