    • The article explores how normative notions of emotions and interaction are active in constructions of the categories of “human” and “animal” in different discourses about autism: scientific and autobiographical. In the scientific discourse of autistic emotionality, a deficit perspective of autism is central. The general affective deficit discourse relies on normative discursive notions of “humanity” or “human emotionality.” Thus, neurotypicals are produced as real “humans” and neurotypical emotionality as “normal” human emotionality. This human normativity is challenged in the Swedish autobiographical texts by Gunilla Gerland (b. 1963), Iris Johansson (b. 1945) and Immanuel Brändemo (b. 1980). Along with American authors of autobiographies about autism, such as Temple Grandin’s Thinking in Pictures (1995) and Dawn Prince-Hughes’ Songs of the Gorilla Nation (2004) they destabilize the categories of “human” and “animal” by identifying with nonhuman animals, describing themselves as such, or feeling disqualified as real humans.

De finns till exempel i dagböcker och i brev − källor som sällan bevarats. I RJ-projektet ”Läsarnas Lagerlöf. Allmänhetens brev till Selma Lagerlöf” har vi dock tillgång till över 40 000 brev till Selma Lagerlöf. Breven härrör delvis från kolleger, släkt och vänner och denna del av materialet har ofta varit föremål för forskningens intresse. Men merparten av breven är från en svensk och utländsk allmänhet. För läsforskningen ger därför brevsamlingen mycket goda möjligheter att belysa frågor om hur människor använde litteraturen; vad den betydde och när, hur, varför och var den lästes. Materialet är inte bara stort, det är också anmärkningsvärt heterogent. Män och kvinnor från olika landsändar, stad och land, av olika klasser och ålder skrev till Selma Lagerlöf. Artikeln ger exempel visa på olika läsarter som gör sig gällande i breven och i frågan om läsning i olika läsargemenskaper diskuteras.

    • The purpose of this article is to investigate how Sweden and the idea of “Swedishness” were constructed in the critical reception of the work of Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) in France from 1899–1912, and to show how the gender of the author was made significant in this process. In addition to the perception of Lagerlöf as the epitomization of “Swedishness,” two stereotypes were often repeated: the gendered roles of the storyteller and the schoolmistress. I suggest that these attitudes originating from the Swedish reception of her work were recirculated by way of French intermediaries. Furthermore, gender and nationality became intertwined in Lagerlöf’s image in France: Her supposed naivety and humbleness were conditioned by both her origin and her gender.

    • This article discusses the large-scale and world-encompassing aspirations of digital humanities and world literature and their methodological accordance with the analysis of literature in smaller languages and of texts understood in social, transnational, and gendered contexts. Are Digital Humanities and World Literature establishing themselves as fields utilizing analytical tools that are at odds with the aims and perspectives of feminist literary history and reception history as a part of literary history? We argue that gender research and theory is insufficiently developed in both computational literary history and World Literature. An unproblematic understanding of translations, canonization, English as a global language, and the use of large-scale computational methods and formalized interpretive models is in many cases not beneficial for the understanding of texts by women writers or from feminist perspectives. Drawing on feminist criticism of computational methods and arguments for specialized rather than generalized knowledge about literary history, we propose that digitization in some form, be it a bibliographical database or digitization of a corpus of texts, may be thought of as part of the research process in projects oriented towards gender and cultural exchange.

    • The teaching of literature and the disciplining of reading. The article discusses how the institutional norm of critical reading tends to rule out other ways of reading. Instead of mapping different kinds of reading practices and providing useful concepts for describing them, the teaching of literature often tends to be prescriptive and aimed at reproducing the this specific way of reading, and in extension, a certain view of literature related to it. This problem is discussed in connection to Rita Felskis “modes of textual engagements”, Michael Warners questioning of what qualifies as a critical reading, and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwicks concept of “reparative reading”.

    • Abstract The increased digital accessibility of cultural heritage materials has brought to the fore the need to make these resources searchable and useful, for example by engaging the public in transcription and data tagging. However, engaging the public in the collection of cultural heritage material is more uncommon. This paper presents the project Remembering Selma Lagerlöf, a crowdsourcing initia- tive to collect the letters Lagerlöf sent to her audience and publish them in a dig- ital exhibition, along with letters from the public to Lagerlöf. The methodological challenges connected with crowdsourcing projects that involve the collection of cultural heritage material are discussed. This paper particularly focuses on issues concerning public engagement and the relation between researchers and contrib- utors, as well as on issues concerning the material, such as contextualization and ethical considerations. The letters form a microhistory of the individuals who, for various reasons, contacted Lagerlöf; the contributors submitting the letters have also proven to be an important source of factual information about the context of the letters. The letters to Lagerlöf from the public can be described as a passively stored memory, which is included in the archive of memory, but not in the canon of public knowledge. However, in many cases, these letters may be actively re- membered within the families they concern, who preserve the personal contexts of the letters and consider them relevant.

  • Methods, Material, Models. Digital Humanities and the Problem of Untranslatability

    • Literary history has since some decades become more directed towards questions of transculturality, through for example postcolonial studies, and migration and diaspora studies (Presner 2011). Comparative literature has been renewed by these perspectives, and gained a new awareness of its colonial past and the power relations at work in every comparison. This has also made translation studies an essential part of comparative literature, which, in its turn, has become more directed towards the (un)translatability of ideas and cultures rather than just texts (Apter 2013). This paper discusses the conflicting movements towards cultural specificity and untranslatability on one side, and general models of literature employed in digital humanities on the hand, particularly in relation to reception history as an important part of European literary history. The development within the digital humanites has changed the methodological landscape of literary historiography. Franco Moretti’s call for large-scale distant readings of the transnational impact of novels, genres, and the literary markets in a European or even global perspective has been influential. But are the digital humanities tools and methodologies useful for investigating the literary history of Europe with its linguistic and cultural diversity? The digital humanities research is stamped by different cultural, linguistic and economic inequalities. A digital humanist can easily investigate a large corpus of British and/or North American literature, since it is already digitized and made available in large online collections. The big data approaches usually favours prose above poetry and drama, since it is easier to process, and 19th century literature over 20th century literature due to copyright issues. More importantly, many digital humanities methods are primarily developed for analysis of printed literary texts, which leaves aside reception documents, for example reviews in the press and letters and other manuscripts not usually available in text format, which is not a convenient material for digital analysis. Furthermore, the pre-processing and mark up of texts for digital analysis is also a translation of one language (a specific literary language) to another (code) for a specific purpose, which is at times generalist in its scope. Like in the heyday of formalism and narratology, there is a generalist tendency, where themes and plots can be extracted from literary corpuses (Jockers2013) and literary genres generalised (Moretti 2013), although the texts employed for building these models in many cases rely on the Anglo-American literary history. At the same time this tendency reveals that there is still a strong focus on the computational within the digital humanities, which might not always be compatible with cultural diversity and empowerment.     • To Preach Without Preaching. Religious Reading Practices in the Public’s Letters to Selma Lagerlöf 1891–1940. As a source for investigating reading in history, letters from readers to authors may provide important information as to different modes of reading employed, as well as the social context of reading and using literature. In the case of Swedish Nobel laureate Selma Lagerlöf, there is an unusually large collection of letters from her readers, written between 1891 and 1940, held in the National Library of Sweden. This article discusses one of the more conspicuous reading practices visible in the letters, namely readings within a religious context. The letters prove that many contemporary readers perceived Lagerlöf as a Christian author, despite her own critical or hesitant attitude towards the church. The readers address her on questions of faith, in some cases describing the reading of her text as a religious experience or observing that her texts may serve as a substitute for the Bible in a secularized society. In the article letters placing Lagerlöf’s authorship in relation to the church, to revivalist movements, and to new spiritual movements are discussed, as well as specific religious modes of reading of literature. The con- clusion is that a religious reading where the text is considered a source of wisdom and guidance, reread and remembered by heart, is represented in the letters. This is an interesting example of a pre modern mode of reading, which differs from reading practices focused on entertainment and consumption.

    • This chapter investigates an under-researched area within global literary studies: LGBTQ fiction and its readers. In history, LGBTQ fiction has been notoriously hard to find for readers. This is in part a question of representation: in times when queer identities and actions could not be described openly, readers relied on word of mouth, or on following queer intertextual networks in-between individual texts. In other words, LGBTQ readers seeking acknowledgement in literature relied to a large part on local, and small-scale communities. This chapter explores the development towards global, and digital queer reading communities within social media. Using Beecroft’s metaphor of an ecology of world literature, the literature shared in these digital spaces seen as part an environment where literature can thrive and spread. Furthermore, the chapter places this discussion within a broader framework of world literature scholarship. After an overview over the historical conditions for the circulation of LGBTQ fiction in the past, the chapter focuses on the global exchange of queer literature in social media. Here, the shift from local and small-scale distribution of LGBTQ literature to global accessibility is explored as a simultaneous loss of community when LGBTQI identities become mainstream, and an emergence of new types of queer belongings. Furthermore, spaces of queer belonging are investigated more broadly in relation to world literature scholarship. This concluding section establishes a dialogue between global literary studies and queer historiography and argues that queer temporalities can provide anti-canonical knowledge and a better understanding of marginalized identities.

    • This work focuses on questions of knowledge organization related to literary fiction. How can LGBTQI fictional literature become more accessible to readers and scholars? The project Queerlit Metadata Development and Searchability for LGBTQI Literary Heritage addresses this question in two ways: by the development of a thesaurus for the description of Swedish LGBTQI literature, and by building a curated bibliographical database for this material with flexible search options. Despite the community and scholarly interest in LGBTQI literature, relevant LGBTQI literature is hard to find both for readers and researchers. Subject indexing is underdeveloped for this topic, and subject headings have been historically inadequate and offensive. The paper focuses on how LGBTQI literature can be made more easily accessible through subject indexing. This will make new research possible, such as gaining overviews of the development of specific themes over time, the presence of LGBTQI literature within or outside of the literary canon or in different genres and changing ideas and perceptions concerning sexualities and gender identities. It will also accommodate user’s needs of better access to LGBTQI themed fictional literature.

    • Departing from Selma Lagerlöf's short story, "Mamsell Fredrika", this chapter presents Lagerlöf's discussion of women's tasks in the building of an equal and sustainable nation. She compares men's creation of the State with women's creation of the home, and makes this an absolute prerequisite for the good home in a societal and political sense. This discourse has often been compared to Ellen Key's thoughts on motherhood as a vocation, but closer examination points to a different evaluation of women's work, which is not, in Selma Lagerlöf's view, strictly connected to motherhood in it's biological sense, but rather detached from the conventional and instead closely related to writing as another kind of women's work.

    • When writing the history of an author’s oeuvre, canonical and public sources are given precedence. The professional readers’ (critics’) statements about what is considered the major work of the author are central in this historiography, while letters to the author from the audience, reports in newspapers or magazines about the author’s public appearances or autobiographical accounts of the author are usually left out. In this article the case of Selma Lagerlöf is explored through more peripheral sources: letters, (auto)biographical accounts, reports from different events in women’s magazines and some “minor” texts in her oeuvre. What links between public and private events and texts appear when these neglected sources are placed in the centre of the analysis, and how does this change the narrative of the author’s reception and significance? I will focus on the question of women’s rights and conditions in society, revealing themselves to be important both in Lagerlöf’s “minor” texts and in the reception of her works, and discuss how Fredrika Bremer’s legacy is visible in Lagerlöf’s life and writing – specifically through the question of women’s citizenship and education as well as women’s role as educators. Only by putting the different sources side by side do the links between history, autobiography and fiction appear, making cultural memories visible and, at the same time, re-evaluating canonical truths.

    • Despite a growing number of digital LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer, intersex) history archives, and research-driven digital LGBTQI initiatives, queer perspectives have not been prominent in the digital humanities. Furthermore, investigations of LGBTQI in literary history is hampered by the fact that, to date, there are no broad scholarly inventories of such literature. Due to the absence of exhaustive bibliographies, scholars need to perform time-consuming, human reading of individual works and imprecise searches in order to locate LGBTQI motifs and themes. Research on subject indexing has also revealed that controlled vocabularies in use are too general to describe LGBTQI themes, motifs, and characters in a relevant manner. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how LGBTQI literature can be made more searchable, and more visible through the development of a quality-controlled subject specific database (QUEERLIT database) in which specialized subject indexing is applied. Methodological challenges pertaining to indexing of queer literary texts with implicit LGBTQI motifs are discussed, as well as theoretical considerations raised when assigning certain contemporary subjects to historical texts.

    • In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Swedish literature was occupied with the construction of national identity, but the authors of this period also connected to an international trend of traveling to and writing about North Africa and Asia. This chapter aims to explore how the sense of loss that was present in the Swedish national discourse is reflected in the representation of the foreign in the travelogue Arabs (1905) and the children’s book Four Children in Biskra (1909) by the Swedish author Anna Maria Roos (1862–1938). Departing from Mary Louise Pratt’s concept of “contact-zone”, and Sara Ahmed’s and Sianne Ngai’s discussions of emotions, the contrast between the nationally encoded idea of home, and Algeria as a space for adventure and colonial knowledge in Four Children in Biskra is discussed, as well the effect of colonial hierarchies on emotions and encounters in Arabs. The chapter also discusses how gender plays into the cultural differences Roos conveys to Swedish readers, and how these differences are charged with emotions.

    • Selma Lagerlöf’s novel Jerusalem (1901-1902) was one of her most successful novels, and it reflected the national project circa 1900. However, Lagerlöf also wrote other, lesser-known short prose texts about Jerusalem. In these, Jerusalem is constructed as an exotic place to juxtapose with the national and to introduce to a Swedish public, but it also functions as a code to Christian cultures. The main questions posed in this chapter concern how the Jerusalem code plays out in Lagerlöf’s texts about Jerusalem, more precisely how the concept of the “Holy Land” can be interpreted in them. Moreover, the question of how religious faith plays into the national discourse is explored.
