  • Doses of darkness control latitudinal differences in breeding date in the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. - 0025-3154. ; 85:1, s. 59-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the first study of breeding in the boreo-arctic barnacle Semibalanus balanoides in which latitudinal variation in timing of egg mass hardening has been examined simultaneously over the geographical scale involved, thereby excluding temporal confounding of the data. The timing of autumn egg mass hardening on the middle shore was established in 2002 and 2003 at ten stations ranging latitudinally from Trondheim (63 degrees 24'N) to Plymouth (50 degrees 18'N). To assess variation at local scale (< 10 km), breeding was studied on three shores at each of two Irish locations (Cork and Galway). At Oban (Scotland) and Cork, the effect of shore height on timing of breeding was investigated. A strong influence of latitude and day length on timing of breeding was found in both 2002 and 2003. In both years, barnacles bred much earlier (when day length was longer) at high rather than low latitudes. No significant effect of environmental temperature or insolation on timing of breeding was detected. Shores no more than 10 km apart showed minimal difference in middle shore breeding date (< 4 days). However, upper shore barnacles bred significantly earlier (by 7-13 days) than middle shore animals. The data indicate that breeding is controlled by period of daily darkness, with high shore annuals encountering longer effective 'nights' because of the opercular closure response to emersion (which will reduce light penetration to tissues). Predictions concerning the effects of global changes in climate and cloud cover on breeding and population distribution are made. It is suggested that increased cloud cover in the northern hemisphere is likely to induce earlier breeding, and possibly shift the present southern limit of Semibalanus southwards.

  • Contamination and correlation with toxicity of sediment samples from the Skiagerrak and Kattegat
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sea Research. - 1385-1101. ; 35:1-3, s. 223-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pollution state in the Skagerrak and Kattegat was investigated by determination of pollutant concentrations and toxicity of sediment samples from 11 stations in the area. A comparison was made with the sediment from a reference site near the Faroe Islands. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and organochlorines were determined in whole sediment and heavy metals and ammonia were analysed in filtered pore water. Toxicity was bioassayed in whole sediment with Nitocra spinipes and Daphnia magna, in pore water with Mytilus edulis larvae and in solvent extracts from sediment with tests measuring etoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in Oncorhyncus mykiss and rate of denitrification. Sites close to Goteborg and in an area from the Oslo fjord to the Norwegian Trench were most polluted. Sediment from the Faroe Islands was least polluted and also least toxic. Multivariate statistical analysis indicates that the different tests were sensitive to different kinds of pollutants. Effects on mussel larvae correlated strongest with the occurrence of ammonia, manganese, cadmium and PAHs, Nitocra with alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and p,p'-DDD, Daphnia with arsenic and gamma-HCH, fish EROD activity with benzo[ghi]perylene and unknown compounds associated with organic carbon, and denitrification with chlordanes, dieldrin and a few PAHs. The results indicate that sampling sites close to Goteborg are so polluted that harmful effects on the ecosystem probably occur.

  • Epibenthic colonization of concrete and steel pilingsin a cold-temperate embayment : a feld experiment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Helgoland Marine Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1438-387X .- 1438-3888. ; 63:3, s. 249-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With large-scale development of offshore wind farms, vertical structures are becoming more common in open water areas. To examine how vertical structures of different materials may be colonized by epibenthic organisms, an experiment was carried out using steel and concrete pilings constructed to resemble those commonly used in wind farm constructions as well as in bridges, jetties and oil platforms. The early recruitment and succession of the epibenthic communities were sampled once a month for the first 5 months and then again after 1 year. Further, the fish assemblages associated with the pillars were sampled and compared to natural areas. The main epibenthic species groups, in terms of coverage, diVered between the two materials at five out of six sampling occasions. Dominant organisms on steel pillars were the barnacle Balanus improvisus, the calcareous tubeworm Pomatoceros triqueter and the tunicate Ciona intestinalis. On the concrete pillars, the hydroid Laomedea sp. and the tunicates Corella parallelogramma and Ascidiella spp. dominated. However, there was no different in coverage at different heights on the pillars or in biomass and species abundance at different directions (north-east or south-west) 5 months after submergence. Fish showed overall higher abundances and species numbers on the pillars (but no difference between steel and concrete)compared to the surrounding soft bottom habitats but not compared to natural vertical rock walls. Two species were attracted to the pillars, indicating a reef effect; Gobiusculus flavescens and Ctenolabrus rupestris. The bottom-dwelling gobies, Pomatoschistus spp., did not show such preferences.

  • Invasion routes, current and historical distribution of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1853) in Sweden.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Invasions. - 1818-5487. ; 5:4, s. 387-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single specimens of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1853, have been regularly reported along the western and eastern coasts of Sweden since the 1930´s. The crab has most likely been brought from overseas via the transfer of ship’s ballast water or secondarily introduced from its key European distribution areas. Since 2001 a sharp increase in the occurrence of the mitten crab has been noticed in Swedish inland waters, but the dispersal routes and distribution of the species into Sweden remain poorly known. Here we document the current and historical distribution of the Chinese mitten crab in Sweden and assess possible invasion routes. A special focus is put on the historical occurrence of crabs in Lake Vänern, which empties into the Skagerrak/North Sea and Lake Mälaren, which connects to the Baltic Sea. The existing time series available for the mitten crab from the two lakes shows a large variation in dispersal pattern between different areas within each lake. In order to detect and monitor outbreaks of the mitten crab in Sweden, an internet based reporting system was created in 2007. Museum collections and reports from the general public throughout Sweden were compared with the known occurrence of mitten crabs in Lake Vänern and Lake Mälaren. During the study, the web-based reporting system was not advertised and the general public did not get paid for reporting the information. Population densities of the crab occurred “in peaks” and unevenly over the last decade in both lakes, suggesting a pulse invasion instead of a constant supply by migration. Significant difference in male and female occurrence together with few transport possibilities between lakes suggests different invasion routes for the crabs. Reports from the general public throughout Sweden coincide with the observations from local fishermen in Lake Mälaren and Lake Vänern. Data on occurrence and abundance are discussed in relation to a potential reproduction area on the western coast of Sweden.

  • Periclimenes nomadophila and Tuleariocaris sarec, two new species of pontoniine shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda: Pontoniinae), from Inhaca Island, Moçambique
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crustacean Biology. - 0278-0372. ; 14:4, s. 782-802
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two new species of pontoniine hrimps from Moçambique are described and illustrated. The first species, Periclimenes nomadophila, is the third pontoniine species found to be associated with scyphozoans and the first record of association with a pelagic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica). Character differences between closely related species are tabulated and a key to the different species in the Periclimenes obscurus group is presented. The second described species, Tuleariocaris sarec, is the fourth species in its genus. All are associated with sea urchins. Tuleariocaris sarec clings tightly head down, to the spines of its host. A key to the species of the genus Tuleariocarisis presented.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Crustacean Biology. - 0278-0372. ; 19:1, s. 180-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discovery of the "red-lipped sea squirt" Herdmania momus, as the host species for Notopontonia platycheles from the southern coast of Western Australia made it possible to confirm and add to the original species description. The shape of the large flattened chela of the second pereiopods is shown to be an ontogenetic development in both males and females. The final shape is accomplished with an increased growth of the ventral carina. The shrimp is a temperate species that extends it distribution up to Shark Bay (about 26?S) on the western coast of Australia. The majority of host tunicates were found with a single individual of N. platycheles inside, contrary to the usual situation of associated shrimps living in pairs. The shrimp often shares the branchial chamber of its host with other decapod crustaceans, indicating that it may migrate out of or between the host tunicates. In some tunicates at Shark Bay, a few specimens of Dasella ansoni were found. This is the first discovery of this species since the type specimens were found in the Arafura Sea.

  • Undersökningar av bottenfaunan i s.k. pockmarks (Naturtypen 1180-bubbelstrukturer) i Brattenområdet. 2012-13
  • 2013

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Marine Biodiversity Records. - 1755-2672. ; 4, s. 1-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In August 2009 six specimens of the ovulid gastropod Xandarovula patula (Pennant, 1777) (formerly known as Simnia patula Pennant, 1777), were found in dredge samples from a locality west of Smögen in western Sweden (58°22′N 11°05′E). In June and November 2010 a total of three specimens of the same species were found in dredge samples from near Svelgen Bridge, Øygarden, Hordaland, western Norway (60°27 ′N 04°57 ′E). Several small colonies of the presumed prey species, Alcyonium digitatum Linnaeus, 1758 and Tubularia indivisa Linnaeus, 1758, were found in the same dredge hauls. Xandarovula patula has been recorded from the Atlantic coast of southern Spain to the western end of the English Channel, with scattered records from the west coasts of Ireland and Britain, as far north as the Orkneys. More recently it has been reported from most Irish coasts, several parts of the Scottish coast and also from some places in the North Sea. Until now there have been no confirmed records from Scandinavian waters. The specimens recorded here may indicate recent immigration of a southern species due to warmer water temperatures.

  • Molecular connectedness between self and none self-sustainable populations of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis, H. Milne Edwards, 1853) with focus to the Swedish Lake Vanern and the Oder and Vistula River in Poland
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Hereditas. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0018-0661. ; 149:2, s. 55-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The highly invasive Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) was studied to reveal the genetic relationship between three none self-sustainable population within the Polish Oder and Vistula River and Lake Vanern in Sweden. Crabs from self-sustainable populations were collected from the Elbe River (Germany), San Francisco Bay (USA) and five Asian river estuaries. Both parsimony and maximum likelihood analysis of the nuclear ITS 1 and ITS 2 regions reveal a similar topological pattern. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence had too low resolution to be informative. The Oder River haplotypes showed high sequence similarities to both the Elbe population and/or the native spawning areas in China. The Vistula River showed haplotypic similarity to specimens from the Oder River in Poland or the Elbe River. Also high sequence similarities were observed to the specimens from the Swedish Lake Vanern indicating to an origin from the River Elbe. Minor changes in evolutionary interpretation exist depending on how gaps are treated and the analytic method. There is a complex movement involving back and forth transoceanic colonization of the Chinese mitten crab haplotypes. Invasion routes are discussed in relation to ship transfer routes and canal waterways.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The catadromous Chinese mitten crab (CMC), Eriocheir sinensis is well known for its extensive invasion routes across the world. However, little is known about both adult and juvenile behaviour after they arrive to a new region. Particularly if the CMC has utilised freight ship ballast tanks as its invasion vector to new freshwater areas like coastal connected larger lakes. The Swedish Lake Vanern, Europe's third largest freshwater lake, offers a suitable study area since only a handful of CMC had been reported between its first record in 1954 and 2004. Hence, the increased catch of of CMC in the mid 2000s was unexpected and provided a rare opportunity to study the initial phase of a biological invasion. Fortunately local fishermen have traditionally, since the mid 1970s, utilised large stationary fish trap nets, evenly distributed from the inlet to the harbour of Lidkoping outward into the main part of the lake. During the peak occurrence in 2005 the traps captured CMC frequently for 90 days starting on August 10. Daily catch increased from September 19th to October 17th. Thereafter the number decreased until November 7th when the last crab was captured. Only one crab out of the 21 caught in the two traps furthest away from the harbour inlet was caught before September 19th. The number of caught CMC differed significantly between the trap nets. Almost half (48.4 %) of all CMC were caught in the two traps closest to the harbour inlet and 41.9% in the second trap-line, consisting of two traps 6 km from the harbour inlet. The remaining crabs were caught in the traps furthest away. Catch pattern from this unique invasion event is discussed in relation to CMC dispersal/migration, invading sample size, behavioural traits and catch efficiency of traps.

  • Marine long-term biodiversity assessment suggests loss of rare species in the Skagerrak and Kattegat region
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Marine Biodiversity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1867-1616 .- 1867-1624. ; 48:4, s. 2165-2176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 The Author(s) Studies of cumulative and long-term effects of human activities in the ocean are essential for developing realistic conservation targets. Here, we report the results of a recent national marine biodiversity inventory along the Swedish West coast between 2004 and 2009. The expedition revisited many historical localities that have been sampled with the same methods in the early twentieth century. We generated comparable datasets from our own investigation and the historical data to compare species richness, abundance, and geographic distribution of diversity. Our analysis indicates that the benthic ecosystems in the region have lost a large part of its original species richness over the last seven decades. We find evidence that especially rare species have disappeared. This process has caused a more homogenized community structure in the region and diminished historical biodiversity hotspots. We argue that the contemporary lack of rare species in the benthic ecosystems of the Kattegat and Skagerrak offers less opportunity to respond to environmental perturbations in the future and suggest improving the poor representation of rare species in the region. The study shows the value of biodiversity inventories as well as natural history collections in investigations of accumulated effects of anthropogenic activities and for re-establishing species-rich, productive, and resilient ecosystems.
